HIve Mind Help!
Back in the day, around/ just prior to the Fighting Fantasy days, there was a range of childrens books that featured maybe 5 short stories about Monsters in each book,(some famous/ folklore).....same size print as the FF books, soft cover.

There was one cover which had a young guy slaying a river monster that used to crush its victims, so he mounted loads of spikes on his armour.
I think the series ran to about 6 books maybe.
Someone must remember, I'm Googled to death !!
cheers ;-)

Thats the story of the Lambton Worm
You ever notice that everyone who believes in creationism looks really unevolved? Eyes real close together, big furry hands and feet. "I believe God created me in one day." Yeah, looks like he rushed it.

Its close!
and def the lambton Worm was in them.
Wierd tales looks like the closest.
I think it was 'Monster Tales' or such like, but still nothing...

Was it this beauty?  Lambton Worm present and correct, IIRC.  Loved this book.

Failing that, R. Chetwynd Hayes Armada Monster Books (5 or 6 volumes) covered a lot of old monster tales in kiddie-friendly terms, including stuff like Grendel.
