Very, very delayed (more of which later...) but here are the winners of February's Art Comp:

1st Place -- Johnnystress
2nd Place -- Woolly
3rd Place -- Petemaskreplica

Congratulations to all of you, and thank-you to everyone who took part.

The voting thread saw some... heated... discussion about voting and number of submissions, and after reading what everyone had to say and thinking about it, I'd suggest this:

Boarders should feel free to submit as many pieces as they want - however, one piece must be selected as their nominated entry for voting purposes. Hopefully this one little guideline will let the more prolific boarders entertain us and themselves but keep the voting a little clearer. I hope it sounds fair to everyone involved.

Also spinning out of that thread were several suggestions for the next competition. The three most promising are:

2000AD Culture Clash -- 2K characters in unusual cultural settings - anything from literature, cinema, television etc.

The Big 2000AD Day Off -- what do characters like Devlin Waugh, Dredd or Slaine do away from the "office"? Is Nemesis the Warlock really a sales clerk by day?

Tharg at 30 -- Old Green Bonce has been with the comic for 30 years, in many different guises. Illustrate your favourite version, or best moment, or imagine Tharg in a future/alternate guise.

What do boarders think of these suggestions?

OK, one last thing before I wrap up. I've enjoyed doing this over the past several months, but there are a number of other things going on in my life and time is becoming more and more precious. I just can't guarantee I can give the time anymore - to the comp, or to the 'net in general - and it means that these competitions just aren't getting my attention as much as they should. So, the March comp will be the last I try and organise, but I'd like to see someone take over running the submission and voting threads. Anyone interested, drop me a line by email.

Film & TV / Anyone still watching Primeval?
24 February, 2007, 09:08:58 PM
Quite surprised this hasn't been getting a bit more board-love, as it's turning out to be quite a fun sci-fi series.

Tonight's episode was particularly enjoyable, opening with death-by-mosasaur, and following that up with the swift dispatch of a plumber at the hands of some angry birds!

It benefits from generally good performances all round, with a lead who brings some subtlety and depth to a relatively slender character and supporting actors who handle their roles ably. Though the episodes so far are basically "anomaly opens, team investigate, it closes" the writers are developing an interesting story arc tying each event together. It helps that the actors are engaging, and the monsters well-realised - and that the writers are having fun putting them into unusual suburban locations - but the basic framework is pretty solid.

Far more deserving of attention and praise than the Beeb's shitfest, Torchwood (or, indeed, several of the episodes from Series 2 of New Who) especially when it's coming from ITV!

General / February Art Competition - Voting Thread...
19 February, 2007, 09:54:41 PM
All the entries are in for February's love-themed comp, and while it's been a fairly quiet month for submissions, there are some nice pieces from boarders on show.

Now, voting. As usual, pick your three favourites & list them in order - 5pts for first place, 3pts for second, 1pt for third. Votes will be tallied next Monday.

In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions for March's competition, feel free to add them here!

OK, all - we missed January but the monthly art competition is back on track, and this month's theme is (unsurprisingly!)...

--------------------------------

2000AD IN LOVE!

That's right, it's a Valentine-themed comp, complete with as many bad love-related jokes as I can shoehorn in! Time to break out those pencils & open up your shrivelled, blackened hearts to come up with a piece that brings love to the Galaxy's Greatest.

To get you started, here are a few ideas to spark the imagination:

2000AD Couples' Night

It's a quiet Friday night at the Nerve Centre and Tharg has organised a Couples' Night for his characters. If you were a fly on the wall, who might you spot snogging in the corner? Would Jack Point finally score with Miss Ann Thrope? How many of 2000AD's classic female characters would Dante (try to!) pull?

I Love 2000AD!

How big a 2K fan are you? Have you dedicated yourself to the cause of spreading Thrillpower? Does your obsession with the comic come before your special woman/man/Betelgeusian (delete as applicable)? Why don't you come up with a piece that illustrates your love for the Galaxy's Greatest?

"Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Here Comes a War Robot to Crush & Smush You!"

Forget flowers, sad-eyed dogs & frilly decoration - Tharg's breaking into the lucrative Valentine's business with his own range of 2000AD-themed cards. What kind of message & illustration would you pick for your beloved?

---------------------------------------

Maybe none of these appeal, so feel free to go with something of your own choosing - just keep with a love theme & link it to 2000AD.

This competition thread will be open for entries until February 14th after which I'll start a voting thread so that boarders can pick their favourites. There won't be any prizes this time, I'm afraid, but I hope that won't deter anyone from taking part!

General / December Art Comp - The Winners!
10 January, 2007, 02:05:41 AM
That's voting done for December's comp. Votes have been tallied - it was fairly close at the top of the pack - and the winners are:

FIRST PLACE - JOHNNYSTRESS

The January competition thread will be up and running as soon as possible, but until then enjoy the pics here & have a great New Year!

General / What's new in 2007?
06 January, 2007, 12:07:19 AM
New Year, new thrillpower - so what can we expect from the prog in 2007? I've tried to put together a brief list of the titles we already know about, but I'm sure it's not comprehensive, so if anyone has something to add feel free to pitch in - and if any droids are lurking and willing to drop a few hints about upcoming projects, feel free!

------------------------------

ANDERSON, PSI DIVISION: BIG ROBOTS
Alan Grant & Dave Taylor
2007

Although it's seemingly been trailed for ages, judging by the preview images posted at Dave Taylor's blog - http://d-taylor-comics-music-ford-mustangs.blogspot.com/2006/10/because-chris-weston-demanded-it.html ">linky here - this story certainly seems to be worth the wait.

BLOOD OF SATANUS III: THE TENTH CIRCLE
Pat Mills & John Hicklenton
2007

After a prolonged absence from the comic, this year will see the return of Hicklenton's crazed artwork on this latest installment in Mills' saurian saga. Hopefully the script will match the art this time!

BUTTON MAN BOOK IV
John Wagner & Arthur Ranson
2007

What next for Harry Exton? Having apparently tied up all loose ends at the conclusion of book III, what could draw Harry back into the fray? Hopefully that mystery will be resolved soon...

DEAD EYES
John Smith & Lee Garbett
2007

The one-page ad in prog 2007 doesn't give much away, but the cave paintings hint at a possible prehistoric theme. That said, with Smith on writing duties it's always best to expect the unexpected!

DETONATOR X
Unknown
2007

Absolutely nothing is known about this one, so let your imagination run wild - perhaps it's the long-awaited return of Michael Fleisher with a mega-epic illustrated by Shaky Kane? ;-)

FLESH (UNTITLED)
Pat Mills & Ramon Sola
Prog 1526

Apparently a one-off special for the 30th Anniversary prog, this sees the original Flesh creative team reunited for the first time in decades.

GREYSUIT: PROJECT MONARCH
Pat Mills & John Higgins
2007

A "spiritual successor" to M.A.C.H. 1 according to Tharg, so we can probably look forward to a fresh look at the government supersoldier concept, complete with a dose of Mills' caustic political commentary. At best, it could be the new Savage - at worst, the new Satanus ;-)

SAVAGE BOOK III: DOUBLE YELLOW
Pat Mills & Charlie Adlard
Starts Prog 1526

Vashkov has been assassinated, Tom Savage has met with a fatal "accident" & Bill is on the warpath. This should be an explosive follow-up to Book II, and I'm sure fans will be expecting no less having waited for this since late 2005!

THE TEN-SECONDERS BOOK II
Rob Williams & Dom Reardon
2007

More superheroics from Rob Williams, this time joined by Dom Reardon, flexing his colour art muscles for the first time in the prog.

General / December Art Comp - Voting Thread...
28 December, 2006, 11:40:04 PM
Late as usual!

OK, voting is the same as always - pick your three favourites and list them in order, with 1st place garnering 5pts, 2nd place 3pts and 3rd 1pt.

Prizes are:

FIRST PLACE -- A year's subscription to 2000AD, or a prize of the winner's choice up to an equivalent value. If the winner is overseas, I can really only offer the price of a UK sub, as the price of the overseas sub is substantially higher.

SECOND PLACE -- A 2000AD tee-shirt, plus a trade paperback of your choice. If the winner would prefer two books - or two tee-shirts, or a separate prize of equivalent value - that can be arranged.

THIRD PLACE -- A 2000AD tee-shirt or a TPB of the winner's choice.

Before we get started, I must give a massive thank-you to everyone who's contributed. It's been great seeing everyone's take on each topic & I hope we'll see more from everyone in the New Year.

Good luck & all the best for 2007!

Games / Got Wii?
09 December, 2006, 01:40:53 PM
Thanks to Amazon, my console arrived today & I'm now the proud owner of Wii - plus Wii Sports, Wii Play, Monkey Ball, Red Steel, Zelda & Call of Duty 3!

Just got everything hooked up, downloaded a few Virtual Console games & am creating some Mii & then I'm going to have a pop at Wii Sports.

My Wii number is: 1185 1841 9282 7323, so if anyone else out there wants to add me to their address book feel free. If you were lucky enough to grab a console, pop your number up here as well.

The interface is fucking great so far, and after the initial period of getting used to a new controller I'm whizzing round the menus & typing away on the onscreen keyboard with no hassle at all. Can't wait to see how the games play!

Help! / Swimini Tulkas!
22 November, 2006, 11:12:13 PM
Sorry for shouting :-)

I've tried sending emails to the address your message came from, but I don't think any of them are getting through. Your prize - a TPB worth up to £15 or something of equivalent value - is still available, so just email me a note of what you'd like & where to send it and I'll get it off to you ASAP.

Cheers!
#30
Title says it all, really :-)

The theme for the end-of-year competition will be "Christmas at 2000AD!" What you take from that is very much up to you. Perhaps you'll draw a nice, homely pic of Johnny & Wulf huddled by a campfire, roasting their chestnuts (a-hem!). Or maybe it will be Tharg and his droids at Christmas, enjoying a drop of oil under the Thaxian mistletoe (watch out - it kisses YOU!). How about Christmas in the trenches of Nu Earth?

Feel free to run riot, provided you keep it 2000AD & keep it festive!

The competition will be open until 18 December & voting will run during that week so winners can be announced before Christmas. Hopefully that will give everyone plenty of time to come up with an idea & submit it. I'd love to see this comp be the biggest yet, so I'm hoping more people will contribute this time around.

As it's a slightly special time of year, the prizes will be slightly special as well. Unfortunately, my funds will be tighter in 2007 so this is going to be the last comp I can offer prizes for, but let's go out with a bang:

FIRST PLACE -- A year's subscription to 2000AD, or a prize of the winner's choice up to an equivalent value. If the winner is overseas, I can really only offer the equivalent, as the price of the sub is substantially higher.

Hopefully that'll entice a few more people in & offer a little something extra for the winners to enjoy post-Christmas.

Anyway, enough blether - get thinking about what you can draw!

General / November Art Comp - Voting Thread...
15 November, 2006, 10:01:14 PM
OK, entries all seem to be in so it's voting time again.

As always, pick your three favourites from the images below then post them in order from first to third. First gets 5 points, second gets 3 points and third 1 point. The votes will get tallied up and the three entries with the most votes will take the top three places. Voting will be open until next Wednesday with the winners being announced shortly after that.

54 Jones - sorry, but the Zenith & Bonjo piece is out of contention because it breaks the rules set out at the beginning. However, you are still due a prize from the last comp, and while you passed on that last time, I'd be chuffed if you'd take it now for turning out such a nice piece. Hope that sounds reasonable!

As for the December comp, I'm afraid I've gone ahead & picked the theme - hope it meets with the board's approval! I'll start up a fresh thread for that ASAP, and you can look forward to some bumper prizes for Christmas.

Best of luck to all who entered this comp - now get voting!

General / November Art Competition - 2000AD Deathmatch!
28 October, 2006, 08:09:11 PM
Late as usual ;-)

Anyway, a big thanks to LMS, the winner of last month's comp, who chose the theme for November:

---------------------

IT'S A FIGHT TO THE FINISH! A BRAWL TO END 'EM ALL! THE DUEL OF THE DECADE! IT'S...

THE 2000AD DEATHMATCH!

Something strange is afoot at the Nerve Centre...

An incompetent service bot has switched the oil feeds, and the pipe that supplies the sinister R-VING droid with his daily fix of petrochemical psychedelics is pumping straight into the writing droids cubicle!

Now, when they're not bombarding Tharg with proposals for 52-part Synammon epics or yet another Rogue Trooper revival ("He's a gay fisherman with a mysterious past, but when the invasion fleet lands his GI training gives him the skill to lead the resistance, armed only with a fishing net & a copy of the Angling Times!") the drugged-up droids are amusing themselves by scripting ever more outlandish crossovers.

Unfortunately, none of the art droids want anything to do with this madness so it's up to YOU to bring the droids' feverish fantasies to life!

However, even oiled-up loonies have rules:

1 -- The deathmatch must be between characters from two SERIES that begin with the same letter. So, Charles Fort from "Necronauts" could give a sound thrashing to the Grobbendonk from "Nemesis the Warlock", or start a brawl with Andreas Romanov from "Nikolai Dante".

If a strip is commonly shortened ("Dredd" instead of "Judge Dredd", or "Luke Kirby" instead of "The Journal of Luke Kirby", for example) then feel free to bend the rules a little.

2 -- The characters from each series must never have fought each other before.

If you want to draw something that's not on that theme or outwith the rules, feel free, but I'm afraid the winners will be picked from entries that stick to the theme & the two rules. Hopefully the restrictions will spark the imagination, and lead to some really unusual deathmatches (Shako vs Sinister Dexter?)

The thread will remain open for entries until SATURDAY 11th NOVEMBER and voting will begin that weekend.

Suggestions / Future 2000AD trades - suggestions?
26 October, 2006, 02:06:23 PM
With the recent update to the 2000AD Books website, the schedule for the next 5 months is looking fairly solid, but what would you like to see the reprint line turn to next? Fire your suggestions up here - all welcome, whether they're picks for future collections in existing series, a favourite you'd like to see reprinted or just a completely impractical-but-fantastic deluxe collection (a Dredd version of Garth Marenghi's "The Ouevre", complete with reading supports?)

I thought that fans of the Perry Bible Fellowship might find this amusing. Here are a few sample cartoons by Icelandic artist, Hugleikur Dagsson, featured in today's Grauniad. He has a collection of cartoons due out in November, so if you like what you see here, keep an eye out for that.

Haven't done one of these for a while! There are a few to get through, so it'll just be quick summaries rather than anything more in-depth. If you're interested in reading more about some of these books, you can try BEC & KAWL: BLOODY STUDENTS
SIMON SPURRIER & STEVE ROBERTS

THEY'RE HERE TO SAVE THE WORLD... KINDA!

Becky Miller and Jarrod Kawl are a pair of students sharing a flat in the less-than-salubrious Swineboil Apartments. He's a stoner movie geek, she's a power-crazed Goth artist - together, they're a magnet for every demonic incursion and ectoplasmic event going. They could be mankind's last hope against the terrors from beyond - if they could only get off their arses...

THE HUNT IS ON!

With a hunger for human flesh the dune sharks came out of the Cursed Earth and went into a feeding frenzy on the streets of Mega-City One. Now Dredd has gathered together a team of cadet Judges to track down the source of this alien menace. Along the way they will come face-to-face with cannibals, a rip in the fabric of time, a bizarre spider-cult, a child militia and an awesome secret going back to the days of Chief Judge McGruder!

Phew!

First, a quick nod to the team behind the books. Every one of the books here is a high-quality release, attractively packaged and with generally fantastic art reproduction, and that quality is down to the people behind the collections putting in the time & effort necessary. Given how ropey 2000AD trades have been over the years, and how precarious the future of Rebellion's reprint line seemed when the DC collaboration came to an end, it's great to see so much material being collected so well.

As for the books, the biggest surprise for me has been how much I enjoyed Bec & Kawl in collected form. It's never going to climb to the top of my favourite thrills list, but reading it here has made me appreciate it more than when it was chopped up into weekly chunks in the prog. While the earlier stories are already looking dated - some shaky writing & art from Spurrier & Roberts, together with some naff pop-culture references - later episodes see the creators & characters settle into a rhythm that makes for a far more satisying read. The substantial sketchbook & interview make for nice extras, and the new cover from Steve Roberts caps this great little volume off perfectly.

Case Files 04 is, as with the other volumes, a chunky ramble through some of Dredd's classic moments. Where earlier volumes were patchy as writers & artists got to grips with Dredd, this collection sees everyone involved producing some career-best work, from McMahon's substantial artistic contribution to Grant & Wagner's effortless, inventive writing. Although still lacking a story index - a glaring omission given the number of tales collected and the use of pseudonyms - this is another solid collection.

Carrying on with Dredd - though of a far more recent vintage - The Hunting Party is a collection that offers an enjoyable romp through the Cursed Earth, showcasing early work from a number of artists who have since gone on to great success in 2000AD and in the wider comics market. Unfortunately, this collection also features the patchiest reproduction of all of the books mentioned here. It often appears that pages have been scanned direct from the comic, rather than original art or films, and while great effort has been made to present the strips as best as possible, there are a few sections that aren't quite up to the high standards set elsewhere (Hairsine's work on "Lost in Americana" is perhaps the worst). The interview with Henry Flint at the close of book is a welcome - if disappointingly brief - inclusion, and the sketchbook is an interesting look at Phillips' working methods at the time, complete with thumbnail page layouts and character designs.

Dante hits the "Tsar Wars" epic in the fourth collection of his adventures & this book also marks the point when John Burns became primary artist on the strip, handling the bulk of this epic tale. For fans of Fraser's art this might be a little disappointing, but the work Burns produces here is some of his finest work for the prog & suits the tone of "Tsar Wars" perfectly. Morrison's writing - while occasionally mawkish - is generally very good, and the change in Dante's character over the course of this collection is handled deftly & effectively.

More Rogue is in store with the sixth (!) volume of his adventures, this time taking a leap decades forward from the material reprinted in the preceding volume, "Regene", skipping revinventions, crossovers & some terrible writing and moving straight to Gordon Rennie's "untold stories". Ian Edington's contribution is interesting, but this book is Rennie's show & while not entirely successful, it's interesting to see how much closer he gets to the magic of Finley-Day's time on the strip than other writers before him. There are a couple of stories here that wouldn't have looked at all out of place in any of the earlier collections, and it helps that he's well served by some gorgeous B&W art from newer 2K artists like Dylan Teague, Simon Coleby and Staz Johnson. There's a disappointing lack of extra material, and even the cover gallery included is a bit of a letdown - all of the covers are reproduced in greyscale, robbing them of their rich colours and leaving the art looking dark and muddy. Given that the strips reprinted are so recent, it would have been nice to see some comments from the writers involved, or some sketchbook material from the artists.

Finally, the second volume of Mills' & Langley's Sláine epic, "Books of Invasions", collecting books 3 and 4 in a gorgeous hardback edition. Unfortunately, the only copy I've been able to lay my hands on is the mis-printed edition which has a section of one book printed out of sequence. I believe a full recall was ordered, but it's probably worth erring on the side of caution and checking through the book before buying just in case you end up with a dud copy. That issue aside, this is another stunning addition to the Rebellion Euro line and a treat for fans of the character & CLint Langley's unusual artstyle, complete with extra material and stunning reprints of the wrap-around prog covers that Langley produced for the series. Mills provides some memorably gruesome moments, and while the Celtic barbarian is perhaps long past his best, the epic scope & loathsome Fomorians help make this his most enjoyable adventure for quite some time.

While still a little too reliant on the big-hitters in the 2000AD roster - Dredd, Rogue, Sláine, Dante... - Rebellion's reprint line appears to be in rude health, and with an upcoming release list packed with books like Leviathan, The Complete PJ Maybe, Origins, Button Man, Nemesis the Warlock, XTNCT and Caballistics, Inc., as well as second editions of earlier collections, it certainly seems that fans are in for a bumper Christmas & New Year.

General / October Art Comp - Voting Thread...
14 October, 2006, 10:12:46 PM
It's that time again, so here's the voting thread for October's competition. The theme was "Dredd Villains" and we had some cracking entries, so anyone who's had difficulty picking out a top three before will likely find this month a nightmare!

Pick your top three & list them in order here. Voting will run until next weekend when the winners will be announced. As suggested in another thread, we'll try something fresh this time and - in addition to the small prizes for the winners - the first place will get to pick the subject for November's comp.

As always, a massive thank you to everyone who took the time to enter something for the comp & don't be disheartened if your own entry doesn't come out on top - with only three places and so many great entries, some nice work is bound to slip through the cracks. If I've missed anybody out, or if I've included something you didn't want posted, let me know.

Finally, a quick shout-out to both Simon Penter & Dark Jimbo - I don't know if either of you got my board mails, but your prizes from last month's comp are waiting for you, so drop me a line.

General / 2000AD Artist Blogs...
02 October, 2006, 11:50:15 PM
Bouncing off the thread on D'Israeli's blogging about his work on "Stickleback", I thought readers might be interested in knowing more about the artblogs out there.

Here are just a few of the 2K-related artblogs out there - and if anyone has any more, feel free to chip in!

----------------------------

CHRIS WESTON
http://wilco4400.blogspot.com

A little quieter than some other blogs, but there have been some interesting posts recently including previews of his work on Battler Britton and a sneak look at his contribution to this week's Tom Frame tribute:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/buttonman/Hershey.jpg">

D'ISRAELI
http://d-taylor-comics-music-ford-mustangs.blogspot.com/

I wasn't a great fan of Taylor's work on his most recent Meg strip, but the previews of his next story, "Anderson: Big Robots", have almost got me converted. You can see a great array of work-in-progress & finished pieces at his blog - and hopefully we'll see more of his work in the comic after "Big Robots".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/buttonman/11finwee.jpg">

DYLAN TEAGUE
http://www.pauljholden.com/wordpress

Everyone's favourite Irish artist blogs about his work for 2000AD & the Meg, inking advice, his early Dredd art, the mysterious Project F & his watery eye. Some instructive step-by-step art in there as well:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/buttonman/pencils2.gif">

ROGER LANGRIDGE
http://surebeatsworking.blogspot.com

One of my favourite artists, but sadly too long absent from the pages of the prog. Still, his work on "Marvel Zombies" was a recent pleasure, and the previews of its sequel on his blog suggest that it'll be another does of cannibal-superhero-holocaust goodness!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/buttonman/14.jpg">

-----------------------------------

Rightio, that's it for now. If anyone knows of any other blogs I've not yet mentioned - or if any artists want to pimp their own sites - feel free to pitch in!

General / Stickleback - a work-in-progress...
02 October, 2006, 09:45:57 PM
Dunno if anyone else will find this interesting, but D'Israeli is currently blogging on the progress of his latest work for 2000AD, Stickleback. It's due to start in Prog 2007 and it seems that work has started in earnest with semi-regular updates being posted on his blog.

Not much so far, but there are some interesting comments on his influences for this particular strip, a striking test image & the first glimpse of the strip's lead character. I've posted the relevant posts & pics below, but it's worth taking a visit to his blog as it's always an interesting read.

-----------------------------

SEPTEMBER 18, 2006

Did a trial page for Stickleback over the weekend - I'm using a new (for me) technique, inspired by the collage work of Argentinian comic artist Alberto Breccia (specifically, his work on Perramus in the 1980's).
It's always a bit nerve-wracking trying a change of direction - new techniques that seem great in trial runs can prove unwieldy when faced with the day-to-day grind of comics production, but the trial page went well. It does you good to shake things up every so often... the slight uncertainty of not completely knowing what I'm doing adds a definite frisson to the working day. I find I'm much keener to get down to work than I have been for months.

OCTOBER 2, 2006

Deadlines on part one of Stickleback are biting a bit, due to the time lost because of the move... I'm pencilling the last batch of pages from the first episode (a ten-pager, to go in Prog 2007). Having to draw the hero, Valentine Bey, for the first time in earnest; it's funny, you can do all the character sketches you like, but it's only when you draw a character in action that you really start to get a feel for them. At the moment, though, it's mostly about drawing him so he doesn't look like either Robert Autumn from Scarlet Traces, or Devlin Waugh...

General / September Art Competition - Voting thread...
24 September, 2006, 08:23:48 PM
Rightio, finally found time to set this up. As the site is still a bit flaky, we'll go ahead with thread voting again - hope this doesn't cause any inconvenience.

Pick your three favourites from the pics below & list them in order from first to third. Your first place pick gets 5 points, the second place 3 points and the third 1 point. Voting will run until next Sunday at which point the winners will be announced.

In the meantime take a look at the thread for next month's comp - Dredd Villains is the theme this time -  enjoy the pics here and get voting!
