Title: I've got a Totally Unoriginal Gaming Show on Youtube now
Post by: HdE on 04 September, 2018, 12:09:14 PM
'Allo you lot! Remember me?

I barely get a chance to drop in on message boards for anything these days. Hope everyone's keeping alright!

I figured it was worth dropping by with a little shameless promotion of something I've had in the works for a while, which finally went live last month.

I'm now presenting a video game review show over on my Youtube channel. Actually getting it off the ground was a MASSIVE challenge, thanks to bad timing, a succession of spanners being thrown into the works, and a really comical number of false starts. But, to prove my irrepressible nature, I got the work done! And videos are going up now! And guess what? No bugger is watching them!

Wait... that last part isn't very good...

ANYWAY: For the benefit of interested parties, I thought I'd lob in some tasty links to a few videos and the Twitter account I've set up for folks who want to keep up with the behind the scenes stuff that's gone into the show, as well as my inane ramblings. The Twitter account is a separate one from teh main account I use for comics networking, to keep things compartmentalised. If you fancy following it, you can find me there as @HdE_playsgames.

The show itself is all about knocking out review based content of whatever gets put in front of me. It might be something new, but it'll probably be something old. Or even something REALLY old. This venture originally had a few other people on board who have all decided they'd rather do other things now, so I'm left with a few boxes of video games, a whole range of different consoles, and a REALLY confusing array of video capture gear.

I'm uploading in season blocks, with 12 videos per season. And I'm coming up on my first 'mid season break' - where I'll be taking a couple of weeks out to get some more stuff together and make further plans for the show, including (I hope) finding a way to fund it.

For now, though, you can find the channel here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVnBKYo3Lyand2miArsa1Ig

And to give you a couple of tasters of what I'm posting over there, why not check out these reviews of
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE - UNCAGED EDITION for the Playstation 3
https://youtu.be/Ar6rZNLZVEA

Or, if something more sedate is your bag, SUBSURFACE CIRCULAR for the Nintendo Switch
https://youtu.be/iwc_ZVLnAAI

Alternatively, if you want to see how old-school I'm prepared to go, you could watch today's video, where I ramble about how great the Atari 7800 versionof ASTEROIDS is:
https://youtu.be/o9YrxtFFS2g

I'm aiming to knock out reviews of games for all kinds of systems, including (thanks to the folks who donated them) the Nintendo Entertainment System, PC Engine, Sega Master System, Atari 2600, X Box 360, Playstation 2, Intellivision and more. And, provided I can work out the technical side of ripping a video signal out of them, I'm hoping to add coverage of games for things like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and even a few handheld systems as well.

There's a ton of work that's gone into this quietly over the last 18 months, and I'm hoping I can commit to this for a long while to come. But, as ever with these things, it needs your support!

I'm hoping to take this beyond Youtube at some point, as the landscape over there is really inhospitable right now. Things have only got this far thanks to my being able to wangle the meagre funding I could (it takes time, effort and resources to do this stuff, after all.) But viewing figures are atrocious right now. Videos just seem not to reach subscribers or new viewers - which is kind of consistent with the abysmally stupid decision making Google have brought to their ownership of Youtube.

If this kind of thing is your bag, please do jump on board. I've re-purposed my old channel, so anybody who was subbed to that should still be (but do check - the site LOVES to disconnect me from subscribers.) I'd suggest clicking on the notification bell icon as well, as that seems to be a better way to ensure you actually SEE the content when it's uploaded.

I hope to see some of you over there! Really hoping I can turn this into something fun.

Liked and subscribed!  Enjoyed and agreed with your Atari 7800 Asteroids review: I did a Scratch version of that one with the kids for Coderdojo*. The tumbling multi-coloured sprites make all the difference.

*Coding an inertia mechanic and size-shifted clones for the child-asteroids being the challenges.

Much obliged, Tordels!

I really do love that version of the game. It's so much better than the one the 2600 got. Sadly, the 7800 console I got hold of to do all my Atari stuff with turned its toes up a couple of weeks after I finished that review. It seems like the universe doesn't want me to play that one for very long.

Ah well - not to fret. Hoping I can get something sorted soon to do a few more Atari videos. Something about those low-fi sounds and brick thick pixels is so charming!

I misread that title as "totally unoriginal game show" and was imaging you in a sequined tuxedo and cheesy grin.

Superfast update! I've got a new video up today, wherein I do the whole retrospective review thing with HALO: REACH.

Surely if anyone's going to appreciate militaristic sci-fi, it'll be you lot, right?

Good vid! I like a bit of Halo and Reach is the only one I haven't played. It's got a more realistic look to it than other entries in the series hasn't it, looks great. That cutscene really grabbed me that you played at the beginning.

I agree about the powers, I don't think I'd want to traverse a level without being able to sprint. Maybe if I got into a fight near an upgrade station I'd use another power briefly (if they're effective) and then swap back, but it doesn't seem ideal!

Have you tried it on an Xbox One by the way? It should run a lot better, particularly on an X1X

Glad you enjoyed it, sir!

Including that cinematic at the top of the review was actually a MASSIVE gamble, as that kind of thing usually gets flagged without fail by Youtube's copyright bots. I'm actually having to prepare a separate version minus that scene for display on other platforms, just to forestall trouble down the line. But I HAD to include it somewhere, because its just such a great statement of what the game's all about. The first time I saw it, I remember having to pick my jaw up off the floor.

I have indeed! Sadly, there's a very annoying feature of Halo: Reach on Xbox One whereby it won't allow me to save campaign progress unless the console is permanently connected to the net. Same goes for Halo 3: ODST.

I've actually contacted Microsoft and Xbox Support about this, and even logged it as an issue on Halo Waypoint. Nobody seems interested in addressing it, unfortunately.

At some point, I'll see if there's a way to fix this by clearing the Xbox One's cache and doing a 'done in one' install of the game. But I'm not hopeful.

There's a few games that behave this way on the Xbox One. As far as I'm concerned, a game that won't allow offline saves is broken, and shouldn't be sold to the public.

Interesting, what are the exact rules around that stuff? I feel like YouTube is awash with full playthroughs of pretty much all the games in the world, I guess I'd assumed that videogame publishers were cool with their games being shown in their entirety - you can't play it after all, it probably acts as a big advert.

Oh wow I've never heard of that bug, that sucks if you play offline! I know you have to manually choose to play in 'offline' mode to get a lot of games to even boot if you haven't got an internet connection, which always seemed daft to me, but you can still save!!

It's a massively complicated issue - basically coming down to the matter of fair use. But basically, use of user generated gameplay footage is usually fine (unless it's from a Nintendo owned game - Nintendo are scum) but use of cut scenes can be dodgy. I believe Microsoft actually relaxed their stance on some of this stuff when they realised how big a deal Halo was on Youtube. So, in this case I took the risk. It's not like I'm monetizing that video anyway. But you won't generally see cinematics in these videos unless it's to prove a specific point.

(Actually, if I don't drum up some more views and subscribers fairly soon, you may not see many videos full stop. But that's another matter entirely.)

My 12 year-old lad enjoyed your Reach video too. Only having had the original XBox to play Halo 1&2 to death on, he's now super jealous.  I've been trying to broaden his Tubing away from fail videos and people screaming at Minecraft,  introducing him to the critical pleasures of folk like Lindsay Ellis,  and your style of well-spoken considered reviewing fits nicely into the gaming side of that.

Keep going.  If you make 'em,  subs will come.

Wow - thanks guys!

Got to admit, this week's update has been a source of some frustration. There's a LOT of work that's gone into these videos, over an uncomfortably long span of time, with a bazillion obstacles and roadblocks along the way. And Youtube themselves have made things needlessly difficult. So, to release a video covering a high profile entry in an absolutely MASSIVE video game franchise to a piffling ten views on the first day was a bit of a tough one to take.

But I've woken up today to find the views have trebled, and I have a bunch of new subs! Cheers, everyone! That's the kind of validation an overworked caffeine addict needs!

It's probably worth mentioning, though, in response to the notion that 'if you make 'em, subs will come' - this is actually an area in which Youtube are quite deliberately sabotaging small channels at the moment. The details are pretty involved, and I could write an essay here if I had the time, but basically, some videos are actively suppressed, and the site's notification system is SHOCKINGLY broken.

I HATE being the guy who follows up on such a lovely bunch of posts with the typical 'don't forget to like and subscribe!' shtick, but it's worth making sure you've clicked the notifiction bell icon to ensure you get alerts about new videos. Sometimes, even THAT doesn't work - hence why I'm setting up threads like this one where I have an online presence.

But, not to fret. I've started to see a little bit of the kind of support the channel needs to keep going. And I knew going in that this is the kind of venture where you have to knock out a LOT of content to secure any kind of foothold. We're good for at least another half dozen videos. After that, I have to start looking at stats and all that boring Youtube guff to see how sustainable a venture this is and how the gameplan needs to be tweaked. Sadly, as Google continue to ruin the site, this becomes a bigger part of it all.

Oh - and a quickie note for Tiplodocus: Cheers for the specially kind words! You might want to keep your lad away from my anime reviews, mind - there are a few of those where I fling a fair bit of PG rated language about.

After a brief lay-off to catch up on other things and make some further plans, I've put up a new video. This time, I look at a handheld version of the ever popular BATTLESHIP. Rendered lovingly in shades of green on the original Gameboy.

Great choice for a review - I whiled away many bus journeys playing Battleship when I was too tired for Tetris or too drunk for chess.  Gameboy games were so insanely expensive (I was  a student) that I only ever seemed to have games that no-one else wanted. It's notable that I put every GB/GBC/GBA game onto my MP3 player about 10 years ago, but have never yet played Battleship again. Maybe today's the day!

And little has changed! I was at EGX a couple of weeks back, and I was surprised to see the prices of some of the Gameboy games being sold there. The more desirable ones have really held their value, it seems.

In a bizarre turn of events, 15 year old HdE actually ended up with two Gameboys back in the day. I don't know how that happened, but I remember being puzzled at the time as to why the games commanded such a hefty price considering the limitations foisted upon them. I always found them difficult to see on the dot matrix screen, and as a result, I very quickly lost interest in the console. In hindsight, it's a shame, because so many of the Gameboy's ports and original releases had a unique charm.

There's more Gameboy content in the works. I've just got to finalise bits and pieces here and there and work out how best to present the games.

Most of the time it was because Nintendo charged a £10 manufacturing fee for the cartridge (or more if you wanted battery saves etc.), so after retail had taken it's cut, that didn't leave the developer with much change from £25...

Actually, that comment puts me in mind of this article from the Digitiser 2000 website - written by the legendary Mr. Biffo himself:

Good review! I'm often suprised by how many franchises have books. I really enjoyed Enemy Unknown on 360, but not played Xcom 2. The gaps between my strategy game moods are usually measured in years and one's not come around again yet! I have been thinking about Advance Wars a lot though recently, might have to dig that out and see if it sparks me off..

Glad you enjoyed it, Grudge!

If it helps any, here's a bit of a risky confession: I don't very often play video games strictly for my own pleasure these days. (I don't get a whole lot of time, to be honest!) But I DID grab a copy of XCOM 2 for the Playstation 4 a while back. There was even some talk of me doing a long, flashy playthrough and posting it on Youtube as an ongoing thing before Google ripped the bottom out of it as a business platform.

So, I DID end up playing a whole lot of thegame. And it's great! Surprisingly dfferent to Enemy Unknown in terms of difficulty curves and content. The shtick of fighting back after the aliens have already won influences things in a meaningful way. It's very, VERY good.

FORSOOTH! A new video has slopped onto the deck from the depths of my metaphorical loins!

This latest one is a review of the mighty PAC-MAN on the NES. Complete with a meditation of sorts on its DEEPLY disturbing implications.

Anyways - enjoy the video!

Got some more goodies to share, folks!

Here's a double whammy of videos for you. To begin with here's the latest review - a look back at the 8 bit Sega Master System version of MARBLE MADNESS (which was an absolute PIG to capture from.) Probably worth a watch if only to see how bady I suck at the game!

Watch it here:

And here, from a few weeks ago, is a little bit of reportage from EGX, which I attended back in September. For those not in the know, EGX is the UK's largest gaming event. And I spotted a couple of interesting indie games there.

No thumbnail for this one, as Youtube won't let me copy it for some reason - but you can find the video here:

More video bits have been uploaderized into the Youtube-o-tron tonight. This one ought to make folks feel old (including me.)

This week's review is of Activision's BEAMRIDER on the Atari 2600. A game that first debuted on the Intellivision console (which was ace!) but soon got ported over to other systems. You might even see a few other versions reviewed on the channel if I can swing it.

'Allo, Twothers! Just popping back in for a bit to pimp the latest video on the channel. I suffered a few setbacks recently which meant I had a hiccup in my production schedule, so this one comes a bit later than I'd have liked.

Anyways - here it is: a look at the dubiously conceived Super Nintendo exclusive SUPER R-TYPE.

Is it super? Or merely a pooper?
(Clue: I just referred to it as 'dubiously conceived.')

By the way, guys - and this is quite important: YouTube have been erroneously deleting subscribers from a lot of channels over the last 48 hours, flagging them as 'spam accounts.' I've lost a few, so you might want to check your subscriptions to make sure they're still active. And make sure you click on that grey notification bell as well - otherwise, in it's infinite un-wisdom, YouTube won't actually tell you when new videos have gone up.

Yeah. I dunno which genius had that idea, either.

Anyway! ENJOY! There's only one video left before this season wraps up.

Great stuff, before I got my own SNES I remember my brother's friend bringing over theirs and Super R-Type when I was a kid. It definitely doesn't look like a stone cold stunner now, but at the time these were some of the best graphics I had ever seen :D

That's always been my thing with Shmups, I love the graphics and sound and the role of the daring fighter pilot taking on armies in space, but I've never found them very satisfying. It's my problem of course, I'm just not very good at them. If I'd ever paid the full price to buy one new back in their console hay-day I probably would've forced myself to learn it though, and maybe I'd be a genre maniac now! Because like you say in the video a big part of these games, and a lot of old hard games, is level memorisation. I suppose I always came to them wanting instant gratification, but they take work. I did get good at the Shmup levels in Cuphead though!

As for the lack of continues (edit - checkpoints sorry), it might have something to do with it being a short game. With arcade games being short, some ports from arcade to console were made harder to lengthen the thing to make them seem more worth their console price. Totally agree that its a pretty thoughtless, arbitrary way to do it. Another thing that happened with some Japanese games too, is their western versions were made harder in these cheap ways because of game rentals in the west, which Japan didn't have. Checkpoints, lives, continues etc. removed just to lower the chance somebody would rent it and finish it. Happened a lot on the NES in my experience!

I have to namedrop Nevryon from 1990, the problematic R-type clone on Acorn. No wonder I thought Super R-type looked insane! Still love dat theme tune doe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnMr_Ozeoso

crank it up!

Only ever played R-Type in the arcade (unless, maybe there was a crappy Amiga version..?) , but by heck I played the stuffing out of it.  Along with Gauntlet it had the single biggest impact on my adolescent finances of any game.  Very interesting to see the SNES iteration dissected, cheers!

Cheers for the comments, guys - I've been REALLY slammed for time these last few weeks, so apologies for taking a while to pop back in and catch up on them.

GrudgeJohnDeed - you're spot on about the bizarro changes that would be made to games with regard to rentals. I found out (typically) shortly after signing off on the script for this review that this was indeed part of the reasoning behind the removal of checkpoints from Super R-Type. Absolutely astonishing that this kind of thing never generated mre uproar back in the day!

And Tordelback - the Amiga did indeed receive conversions of R-Type and R-Type II. They were anything but crappy!

Also, a version of Gauntlet was recently donated to me for the show. Whether it'll feature anytime soon, I wouldn't like to say. But I'm committed to another season's worth of content once this current run is up. So you might get to see it then!

I've already got a fair bit of material written for season 2. That's likely to consist of much the same as you saw in season 1, BUT, I do have a few things I'm aiming to slot in. With a bit of luck, there should be some PC Engine and NeoGeo stuff. But I'm also trying to work out some stuff for older home computers. The Amiga, C64 and ZX Spectrum are platforms I really want to feature as well. But those might take a bit of working out.

It's still really early days, so I'm still working out which systems appeal to people. I suspect I won't really have enough analytic data to go on until I've covered a few more games on each of the systems I've already reviewed for. So I'm still very much open to suggestion.

One thing I can tell you, though, is that I'm definitely going to do some more old school Atari stuff at some point. Videos on those games usually struggle for views, but they're fun (and comparatively easy) to make.

In terms of things I personally want to feature, there's loads of things I want to bring to the channel. But it all depends on how easily I can capture footage for them.

A super-quick update with a new video, which talks more about some recent YouTube shenanigans than any of that pixellated video game goodness.

The link below is to a video I made recently concerning YouTube's lates 'spam accounts' purge. Which has actually, oddly (predictably) enough removed actual subscribers from a large number of YouTube channels.

Could I ask, folks: if you've enjoyed my content so far and already subbed, please check that you're still subscribed. The video in the link also mentions several other channels that you might find enjoyable, who have all been affected far worse than I was.

Aaaaaand season one of my YouTube Gaming show concludes in... abstract fashion, with a review of the Sega Megdrive version of COLUMNS.

You can find it here:
https://youtu.be/50pOMbW75B0

Amazingly, despite the apparently simple appearance fo this game, I found enough to talk about to fill almost eleven minutes! Sega used to pack quite a bit in those little black cartridges! Not always for the best, mind...

Anyway, that's my first run of reviews finished. Season two will start in March 2019 barring a MASSIVE muck-up or Article 13 destroying YouTube. I don't have any funding for the next batch of reviews, but I seem to be making enough connections (and genuine friends) in the YouTube gaming community that it makes sense to keep going. After that though...  well, we'll see, I guess.

Thanks to everybody on this forum who's given the videos time of day. I've been hard pushed to keep up with everything, but it's been heartening to see your comments. And ALL the input helps.

Nice review, and great game! A real blast from the past. I'm more of a Columns guy than a Tetris guy myself, mainly just because that was my first proper exposure to the genre! The version I played a lot of was on the Game Gear, but it wasn't the standalone one which I think was just a port of the Master System version (as were most GG games) - it was in the 'Sega Game Pack 4-in-1'. It had its own look and much better graphics in general than the GG/MS version. In fact I liked how it looked a lot, cool tunes too! I think it had slightly different rules to Megadrive Columns though, it didn't have single line diagonals iirc

https://imgur.com/a/SjlCekc

edit: ah a bit of research tells me it was based on the Flash mode in normal Columns.

I only vaguely recall playing the Game Gear version of Columns. A pal of mine had the console, which was how I first saw it. But I do rememer liking it a LOT more than the Megadrive version.

I may have simply been takenn in by the novelty of playing it on a portable game console. If the channel continues past season two, I might have to track down a copy and give it another look.

ATTEN-SHUN!

Time to dust off this thread with news that I've just pushed unveiled the first video of what I'm grandiosely calling the second season of my YouTube gaming show. I have a feeling this one will go down well with the Twoth crowd as well, as it's a long-ish review of Insomniac's PS3 exclusive 'what if the Axis in WWII were actually a bunch of aliens' shooter RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN

Got a new one out the door, folks!

This week's not-quite-ten-minutes of brutal dissection of an old video game is apportioned to OVERRIDE - a Japanese only release for the super-cool NEC PC Engine.

I'm always a bit curious as to how many folks actually clapped eyes on the PC Engine back in the day. They were AWESOME bits of kit!

Also, STOP PRESS! I recently contributed some vocal bits to a video by YouTube retro-gaming sensation Octav1us, where she had a look at the old BBC Micro game Granny's Garden.

I never saw a PC Engine in real life, just mysterious ads from mail-order companies in gaming magazines.
I saw plenty of ads for TurboGrafx 16 games in American comics but didn't even realise it was basically the same console. It's a real shame it wasn't released over here. I've had a little play on one recently and really liked it.
I have a fairly decent little retro collection and may invest in a PC Engine at some point (but top of my list is a Vectrex - they've doubled in price in the last couple of years though).

I remember the same ads!

My first introduction to the PC Engine was in the form of the Core Grafx console - basically the Japanese PC Engine in a dark grey case with rebranded logos. One of the rich kids in my school had one. He was later outdone by another one of the rich kids who had the authetic, white console from Japan. I couldn;t get over how dinky it was - no bigger than a bag of crisps!

If you DO pick up a PC Engine, I'd urge you to look for a re-capped unit. The capacitors in those older PCE models reliably fail over time, which can make buying one a bit of a lottery.

I believe issues with PC Engine capacitors is related to simple age-related degradation. So definitely go the re-capped route if you can!

Got another one of them old-timey video game videos up this week. This one's to do with the old Atari 2600 game JAWBREAKER, which is actually kind of interesting. Because it's a game that riffs on the much better known Pac-Man, but in an unexpectedly original way.

Here's a REALLY exciting image to show you how exciting and not at all dated the game looks:

I really like this version of R-Type and remember it being a real show-off games for Master System owners in its time.

I'd quite like to try the MSX version out of curiosity.

The MSX is one of those systems I currently don't have access to, but REALLY wish I could do some stuff for. There's an amazing library of games for the system. I gather finding a working one in decent condition is quite a task, though.

Maybe if I can hit those PewDiePie numbers one day...

Nice one, good review! Got a new appreciation of R-Type now after having played through the third. This one definitely beats the Game Boy version for the crown of best 8-bit port I think!

Man, I love the Master System, such great hardware, more powerful than a NES in its palette abilities. Got under-utilised and I don't think we ever truly saw the best of it, mainly down to Nintendo's ultimately illegal licencing requirements.

Also, my friend bought a MS copy of R-type a few weeks ago and I've been looking forward to going round to his house and playing it, now even more!

Glad you enjoyed it, Grudge!

I could very easily go on a rampage of reviewing nothing BUT different versions of that game. But I think that would prove a bit boring for viewers.

I'm quietly a bit surprised that I haven't had comments on that video asking why I hate the Master System, or something. Apparently, even referring (accurately) to the PC Engine as an 8 bit console in a recent review was enough to severly upset somebody, so it seems like commenting on console hardware itself is a bit of a risky undertaking.

Lovely little console, though - even if, like everything else of its era, it wasn't without a few technical drawbacks. I really went down the rabbit hole learning about some of the console's idiosyncracies during the research for this video. It might even lead to a separate feature somewhere down the line, if time permits.

Hope you enjoy this version of R-Type when you get to mash buttons on it. Just remember, that's a chunk of my childhood you'll be playing!

Yeah its a minefield isn't it, there's the 16-bit generation of which I'd say the TG-16 is an early member of, and then whether the hardware itself warrants the term 16-bit. Which is messy with the TG-16, and even the SNES and Mega Drive too as all of them contain 8-bit and even 32-bit aspects as well as the requisite 16-bit ones. Then later we get the Jag adding up components to make wonky claims of 64-bit hah!

One gripe I do have as an occasional pixel artist and classic games fan, I don't like it when people use '8-bit' as a blanket term for anything remotely pixelly! But I won't be attacking any Youtubers over it :)

Would love to see technical vid on the MS hardware itself, I've been down that rabbit hole myself making pixel art that would run on real hardware (although I often threw the sprite limit out the window).

This is the exact point that caused the trouble I mentioned earlier. Those sneaky marketing types were all about passing off the PC Engine as a 16 bit system in the States. It took me an AGE to get to the bottom of what the deal was there.

That console is a WEIRD bit of kit. Two 8 bit processors tied to 16 bit graphics handling. Kind of interesting, seeing how it gave it the edge in performance over the other hardware you could get at the time. But I'm reliably informed that doubling up on 8 bit processors doesn't equate to 16 bit horsepower.  I tried looking into it a bit further but... eh. I had comics to letter and my head was already starting to spin.

It really is fascinating to see how some of those older machines worked, though. A point of particular interest for me is how we have a growing market for single board computers which are now being used quite commonly to emulate console technology. Looking at how similar so many of those SBCs are, and how unique the internals of certain consoles were, it's amazing to me that people can make the one behave like the other!

Alright... who wants another one?

This one releases into the wild a good bit later than I'd intended. I've had LOTS of comics work on these last few weeks, plus a hundred and one technical issues in the recording of the commentary turned it into a bit of a beast to get finished.

It's also something of a labour of love. This time, I look at the PS3 version of HOMEFRONT - a first person shooter that's seldom mentioned in an especially positive light. However, it's premise is really quite interesting. And unsettling. So I give the game a thorough dissection to see if that makes it worthwhile.

By the way, folks: VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED. This one contains some imagery that viewers may find distressing, as well as some in-game strong language. As a result, it's age restricted.

I miss pinball, the real thing I mean, computer simulations are never quite right. I used to be an absolute whizz at Pinbot back in the 80s, but my list of Manchester pubs that still have a machine is now down to just one.

I do have a real fondness for good quality pinball machines. I don't think anything beats the real thing.

Funny that you mention Pinbot. I was actually given copies of both that and High Speed for the NES to review right back when I started the show. I've heard good things about both of them. Sadly, I've never been able to play either of them, as they simply don't work in the NES clone console I use to capture footage. In the case of High Speed, I think the cartridge has simply upped and died.

I also have Video Pinball for the Atari 2600, which is entertainingly dreadful. At least, it's entertainingly dreadful if you're considering writing a review of it. Otherwise, it's just dreadful.

I think a lot comes down to the development with these kinds of games. Some publishers seem to think 'Ah! Pinball! People love that! We'll wang out a quick pinball sim and rely on getting easy money for it!' while others are more committed to doing a decent job.

I particularly remember Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies on the Commodore Amiga being absolutely fantastic.

I'm thinking about springing for a physical copy now - I had a bit of bonus pay come through on something yesterday afternoon, so I may have to nab it on PS4! Decisions decisions... pay out for juicy Kickstarter swag, or save money for survival in the inevitable wasteland setting of post Brexit Britain? Agh!

I did spot that one of the stretch goals was for a recreation of stage 3 from the original R-Type. Doesn't look like it'll happen, but how awesome would that be?

Cheers, Tordels! I'm happy to say the show's getting a LOT of positive reaction at the moment. I mean, that doesn't equate to views, necessarily, but people are enjoying what I'm doing and even sticking their hands in their pockets to finance production. So I must be doing something right.

Regarding the PC Engine, a few folks have mentioned to me after this last review that they didn't know it even existed. That's a real shame, as it was an absolutely awesome little console! It had a very interesting catalogue of games, too, including ports of some beloved arcade titles, and even a few notable Sega games.

The latest review's gone out today in a bit of an experiment to see if I can snag more viewers by posting at the weekend. This time, I snag something cheap on the Nintendo Switch eShop and see if it's really as much of a bargain as it seemed. It's REFUNCT, a low-stress game about jumping and pushing buttons and things.

Heads up folks - got something a *bit* special planned for tonight's video.

This latest one represents a bit of a milestone. I sank more hours into it than I reasonably should have, because the nature of the hardware it's captured from, and a few other techie details, made it an extremely demanding video to edit.

The review was originally written WAY back, and intended to appear early on in the first run of reviews. But it turned out capturing a clean video signal from an N64 was near impossible. So I've had to get a bit creative witht he tools I have to hand.

Anyway, this review goes live tonight at 8:00PM as a YouTube Premiere. Read below the pic to see why that's a big deal:

So, why is it going up as a Premiere? Well, because it allows you the opportunity to watch it for the first time LIVE, with an interactive chat window! Yes... you can actually TALK TO ME! OR EACH OTHER! OR ANYONE ELSE WHO SHOWS UP! The wonders of modern technology, eh?

I'll be online at 7:50PM. If any of you fancy it, it'll be great to see you there. Standard rules apply: just basically be nice to each other and bring popcorn.

The video lasts approximately 10 minutes, and will be viewable as normal after the premiere.

ALART! ALART! A new vid-me-do has just gone live.

I've fired up the Gameboy capture kit for what I gather is a fairly rare look at the version of PANG that was released for it. There are plenty of videos on the North American release, which was retitled as 'Buster Bros' but this here is a jin-yoo-wine look at the game as it was packaged for Europe.

It's, uh... pretty much the same bar the title. But, you know how it is. Some people obssess over this stuff. ANYWAY. Here's a pretty picture:

Another fun one - I was a Pang arcade addict in the Student Union cafe, and came to it with excitement on portable as a dodgy GB Rom on my MP3 player emulator.  Without the two-player, I found it a bit dull, and without the physical GB controls very difficult to play at speed.

Wasn't aware of the history of the title - very interesting.

It's definitely not as smooth as other conversions of the game, whether you're emulating it or playing it on real hardware. I spent a bit of time with some other ports of this one as I was researching this video, and it's honestly kind of surprising that Hudson Soft couldn't quite nail down the fluidity of the controls. When you play another port, you almost IMMEDIATELY notice how much easier the handling is.

Glad you're enjoying the videos, Tordels!

PANG looks rock hard.  I thought I'd played it before but that showed me I hadn't. Or my memory of the game was completely false. Anyway, good vid. Cheers.

You're welcome, Tips!

I would say Pang's pretty well balanced, really. It ramps up in challenge the further into it you go, which I think these kinds of games should do. Sometimes, all it requires is a balance of timing, strategy and reflexes.

Testify brother! Although it was the manky arcade at the top of Buchanan Street for me. Magic game in the arcade but never really thought much of any of the home ports.

Pang's great - I had the Speccy version which I liked well enough at the time. No idea how it stands up.
Has anyone played the much earlier Speccy game (which I think Pang basically ripped off) Bubble Buster?

I'm not actually aware of Bubble Buster. But here's a fun trivia factoid: The ZX Spectrum version of Pang was actually my first choice to review ahead of the Gameboy version. But it just suddenly and abruptly stopped working!

I still want to squeak that one out at some point, though. It's a pretty good port.

Quick update!

The show now has a Facebook page. So if you're active over there, feel free to give it a follow. I'm scheduling posts over there, and while it's mainly being used as another outlet to hopefully get some fresh eyes on the videos, I'm also planning to add some behind the scenes stuff from time to time.

A further update!

Quite unexpectedly, I happened across something I'd been after for a while. And there's a bit of talk of technical trickery I can use it for to do some stuff for the channel. Here's a link to a video I prepared for the show's Twitter account to explain in detail.

After MUCH grunting, heaving and exclamations of 'push! PUSH!' I've got another video up on the channel. This one's skewed more toward current gen gaming, but it still has an eye on the old days, as I take a considered look at the 2016 PS4 remaster of ASSAULT SUIT LEYNOS.

It's got big robots! Fighting! In space! And more explosions than you'd find in Michael Bay's out-takes!

Regarding Pang, the Amiga version was excellent.  I did play the Speccy one too.

There's a PS4 game that's kind of similar.  It's called The Bug Butcher.  Pretty challenging but very fair.  I think I ended up platinuming that one.  It was very good.

Hallo, chums and pals!

I hope everyone's managing to hold on to their sanity during the coronapocalypse. Just ducking my head in to update this thread with news that I've just launched the third season of my Totally Unoriginal Gaming Show over on YouTube. So if any of you need something else to watch during isolation or an unproductive work-from-home day, here's the latest video. Herein I take a look at JETPAC, an old home computer classic, running on hardware that's ludicrously overpowered to run it.

Heads up, folks! In between lettering comics and managing family meltdowns during lockdown, I've been trying to get more stuff together for folks to watch if they feel so inclined.

So, here's the latest video on my gaming channel. This one's an oddity - a conversion of an old Namco coin-op that apparently never made it out of Japan, with a mythological feel. It's PHELIOS for the Sega Megadrive!

Great review of a pretty obscure game.
I have similar feelings to you about this one. It's an enjoyable game, well worth a play, but there are so many other great shooters on the MD that it struggles to compete.
I have to say I really like the graphics though. The colourful blockiness just looks great to me - and there's some nice parallax scrolling going on too. Most importantly the enemy bullets are easy to see.

Glad you enjoyed the review, James!

It's one of those cases where I wish I could have had some proper experience of the original arcade machine to make a proper comparison. Something that I couldn't really get to the bottom of, even though I did go looking for it in my research, was whether the blocky look of the graphics was an intentional downgrade.

From what I gather, the Megadrive / Genesis was able to shift things around much quicker on screen if they were lacking in detail. And this game really does ramp its pace up to a fair lick at times - all without screen flicker or slowdown. That's always a big deal with 8 and 16 bit action games.

Really pleased I was able to get my hands on this one to cover. It's an unsung gem!

I've hit a bit of a bump in production at the moment, but I've been weighing up how realistic it is to cover some proper home computer content for a while now. Those games aren't on my review pile as yet, but now that I've got a swanky new ZX Spectrum Next, I might see if I can crack into them for a full-blooded Speccy flavoured review when the timing's favourable.

Ah well, if you have a new Spectrum, is it worth doing an extended episode that covers the 8-bit 2000ad games? I really enjoyed listening to the history of them on the recent Thrillcast - would be great to see them in action (unless the YouTube version of the Thrillcast showed gameplay).

Btw: I bought and played SUBSURFACE CIRCULAR On the basis  of the review upthread. It was great... And what an ending!

I'll probably not be doing anything quite like that, as those sorts of videos can be VERY time consuming. And, for the time being, I've got to think carefully about how I split my time between doing these video reviews and lettering comics. But if there's demand for 2000AD themed content, I can certainly scribble that in the ol' notebook!

As for this comment:

You have NO IDEA what a shot in the arm this is to read! You're actually the first person to tell me they've bought anything off the basis of one of my reviews. And that's made all the sweeter by the fact that the Subsurface Circular review has been a source of major angst in the past. To date, it's one of my least popular, and earned a slew of early insta-dislikes from people who couldn't deal with the fact that I was suddenly uploading gaming content.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the game - it's certainly something different! And if you enjoyed that, there's an upcoming review scheduled for later in this block of videos that I think you might like...

Last week was a pretty big week for my little video game show. Not going to say much as to why, because I'm a bit scared I'll jinx things. Suffice to say, after a LOT of hard work, things may finally be about to pay off.

New review is up today. In this one, I look at the follow up to a game a reviewed way, way back. QUARANTINE CIRCULAR, by Mike Bithell, plays with the same format as his previous Subsurface Circular, daring to tweak a few very minor things in the process. It's an interesting beast.

New video thingy on the YouTube wotsit!

I managed to pull off a few insane technical tricks to bring some Commodore 64 content to the show. Behold... SUPER BREAD BOX!

This is a really fun version of a game you might have seen elsewhere, that ANYBODY can enjoy regardless of whether they own a C64 or not. Details are in a pinned post under the review itself on YouTube. Which you can find here: https://youtu.be/ZSda4KJcyBM

Just a quick note as well, for anyone around these parts who's been following and enjoying the videos up until now:

This video marks the midway point in the third season. I'll be taking a hiatus from the show for now as I need to work out a better strategy to keep it going.

I recently set up a Patreon page for the show in efforts to secure a little regular return for making it. Quite a bit of effort goes into making each video, and this step helps me to justify continuing to make new ones.

Sadly, YouTube as a platform seems determined to saw the legs off small ventures like mine, and I've seen evidence recently that my videos are being actively suppressed. So what I'll do for the remainder of this season is release new videos to my patrons as they're completed and stockpile them until I'm ready to put out one video a week for public view on YouTube. Then I'll be in a position to see if I'm satisfying their godawful algorithms or not.

This stuff always feels like one long, ever evolving experiment. So let's see where it goes, I guess.

I have risen from my slumber!
(With a splitting headache. But that's by the by.)

Anyhoo, hope everyone's doing okay. Got something fresh to share here. My plan was to stockpile new videos so that I could maintain a regular release schedule next year, but seeing as the UK's in lockdown and I figure folks might appreciate having something to watch... NEW VIDEO! And this one's a genuine thing of wonder. It's a look at one man's attempt to de-make the ultra gnarly DEAD SPACE for, of all things, the ZX Spectrum!

You can watch the review via this link:
https://youtu.be/EhptNL5V_Vg

Some bonus info, which might be of interest:

This game is available as a legit free download from the developer. I'll leave you to do the Googling, but it's easy enough to find.

"But I don't have a ZX Spectrum!" you may cry, "They're ancient and knackered old computers, and nobody has them anymore, right?"

Well, even if you don't have one, you can still play this. I played the game for review purposes on my swanky ZX Spectrum Next, but the footage is captured from a Raspberry Pi running an emulator. There's no difference in performance at all. So, there you go... a possible solution for anyone looking for something fun to kill a few hours with in lockdown.

Enjoy!

NEW VIDEO ALERT! WOOP! WOOP!

I recently finished the second longest review I've put together. Now that it's out of early access for Patreon backers, I guess I ought to be airing it here!

I'm always trying to search out games to cover on the show that fit the definition of being 'interesting,' and this one certainly fits that description. FINAL FIGHT CD is a super whizz-bang enhanced conversion of Capcom's coin-op of the same name for Sega's Mega CD system... with an extra twist in so much as it wasn't actually made by Capcom themselves.

I dig into this one and find that, for an apparently simple game, there's a lot to talk about.

This one took an age to do, because it's quite long, I had to do it around a load of other stuff, and I've also been taking medication for a stomach problem that's been knocking me out cold every five minutes. (What can I say, folks? Life's been fun lately.)

ANYWAY. Here's a look at a really interesting one. Quake 4 has only, to my knowledge, ever recieved one console port, for the Xbox 360. So I took a look at it late last year, and you can find out just how well it made the jump to Microsoft's then-new console in the link below:

New video alert! WOOOP! WOOOP!
(Feel free to add some drum 'n' bass under that. Seriously - you'll thank me later.)

Continuing my sporadic exploration of console conversions of popular arcade games, I take a look at the NES version of ARKANOID. Basically breakout on steroids.

I remember playing a few different home computer versions of this back in the day, and being blown away by the expansion on the simple bat and ball formula. The Nintendo Entertainment System's conversion went a step further, as it released with its own dedicated controller, which SHOULD have made it the ultimate conversion, right?

Turns out the ravages of time didn't much care for that detail.

Quick heads up for a thing I'll be doing tomorrow that's come about at fairly short notice.

But then, after a full day of techie wrangling, I said 'SCREW YOU, COMPUTER!' and I'll be going live at 9:30PM instead.

Drop by and say hi, if you like. The game looks cool as hell, so it should be fun!

Quick heads up that I'll be attempting to do another Twitching today at 5:00PM UK time.

Nothing video game-y, mind. I've had a rather juicy product of the anime / giant robot variety arrive via my postal portal. As it's quite fancy, I figure it might be worth trying a stream around that for an hour or so.

What's in the box? What could it be?!

Also worth mentioning: I'm coasting along on maybe an hour's sleep today, so God only knows what state I'll be in by the time I go live. So if you do drop by, prepare to see me in my natural state - i.e. running on fumes, and quite likely to have a narcoleptic episode live on camera.

See... I don't half give you lot value for money!

Not actually pertaining to video games, but I think this might be of interest to certain folks on the forum.

This evening at 6:00PM UK time, I'm going to be putting on one of my soon-to-be-regular show and tell streams on Twitch. The idea of these is that, each week, I'll turf out something cool from my Stash of Interesting Things and put it on camera for your edification.

This week's artifact is a very special HD Blu Ray release of the '90s cult classic anime CYBER CITY OEDO 808, which I'll be talking about at length. If you remember this one, or have any fondness for it, why not swing by for a bit and we can share some memories!

'Allo folks! it's been a while, eh?

I've been sidelined from online content production for a bit thanks to some annoying and persistent health concerns. Basically, if it wasn't my duodenum, it was my inner ear. I'm still not 100%, but I'm in a reasonably good place to start doing things again.

On Saturday night, I'll be doing a thing on Twitch at 9:00PM. Horizon Forbidden West is currently slated for release on February 18th, 2022. And it looks IMMENSE.

If anyone fancies hanging out with me for bit, I'll be scrutinising ALL of the gameplay footage that's been released to date. I did this roughly six months ago with the initial gameplay reveal, and folks seemed to enjoy that quite a bit. We're gonna go deep with this one!

You can find me on Twitch via this link - new followers are more than welcome!

'Ow do, folks?

It's been AAAAAGES since I posted anything in here. I hope everyone's keeping well and hasn't been driven insane just yet by monarchy related gubbins. Thought I'd drop in very quickly to honk the horn about something I'll be doing later today.

If you're a fan of the Alien movies, and you've been swept up in the recent tabeltop roleplaying resurgence, this might be relevant to your interests. I've got hold of the physical edition of Free League's much delayed Heart of Darkness scenario for their Alien roleplaying game. So I'll be doing an unboxing and overview, as well as offering my thoughts on the content.

There's rather a lot to unpack with this one. And there may even be a quick peek under the hood at something I've got in the works for later in the year...

If you'd like to watch this, either live as it goes out tonight or later on VOD, you can catch me on Twitch via this link:

Just a quick update - an edited version of Thursday's livestream has gone up on my YouTube channel. So if anyone would like to watch it without the hassle of cathcing it before the Twitch VOD expires, you can do so - with a bit of waffle and jankiness snipped out, and some handy chapter markers to boot!

I'm bloody good to you people, aren't I?
