Title: Anyone going to play Strange Brigade at launch?
Post by: gameluvah on 25 July, 2018, 09:06:57 PM
I am really interested in this but Zombie Army Trilogy kicked my @$$. By the time I gave it a whirl no one else was playing. Don't want to repeat that with Strange Brigade. Looks very fun but I know I will get clobbered if I try to play it solo.

I will be! Got it pre-ordered on Xbox, looking forward to it. The Nazi Zombie games were pretty rough solo but great fun with a co-op buddy, so expecting this'll really work best with more people too.

I hope not. I hate online co-op gaming, and the idea that the game will be too difficult otherwise is an instant turn-off (as im crap at most games!)

I saw an interview around E3 with one of the designers, where he said the game had been designed so it can be played solo.

found it:
"it's very much a single player game with co-op support."

I will hopefully be playing day one, money allowing!

That's good to hear. It wasn't so much that the Nazi Zombie games were too hard as such when you were solo (although they were obviously easier with more players), it was more that the battles and sieges could be a bit of a slog to get through on your own because they were pretty relentless, and bosses took ages to take down when you couldn't really flank them. Played the first one alone and wasn't too keen on it, but then playing through with a mate and having the chat and laughs that come from trying to deal with those fights together and rush to help each other when we got in a hairy spot added a whole other dimension to it.

It was definitely designed for co-op, so if this has been made with single player more of a focus then it hopefully won't have the same problem.

Thanks for that link! It does ease some fears..

Would love to but no money for full price gaming - but love a bit of Left 4 Dead style co-op action.

Did anyone buy it at launch then? I'd love to hear some impressions. My Xbox is broken so I'll need to live vicariously through others for a while!

Me and a friend bought it and have so far played through the first mission. It's great fun! Even just in that first map there were some nice puzzles to explore and lots of enemies to blast through. It looks nice too, I'm playing on the 1X with the 4K patch so that helps, but the art design in general means it all looks really nice and bright and it all pops visually in quite a lovely way. The gameplay is really similar to the Nazi Zombie games unsurprisingly, but the tone is obviously really different and the whole thing feels a lot more vibrant and fun and definitely more varied in the environments and encounters/interactions.

Looking forward to playing some more!

Rebellion never muck up the art do they, I don't think I've ever played a bad looking Rebellion game! I hope it does well for them, it might have has less mass appeal than Sniper Elite or ZAT in terms of themes. There's also actually a section of people (small I'm sure) that think the game is racist! I've got the cash now so I'll be buying as soon as Bill Gates has finished with his soldering iron..

Racist?  Why?  Because it's about empire?

Yep - the Eurogamer review makes a big point about how Colonialism = bad...

Doubt I'll play it, not much of a gamer these days - but that reviewer sounds like a right barrel of laughs...

Yeah seems to be the way games journalism is going in general, outrage-fed and politicised like everything else. I've also seen the user comments for Strange Brigade videos on websites like Giant Bomb, last I looked there was a good mix of allegations of racism and also some blatant xenophobia directed towards British people. Lovely!

Spent a couple of days on this, and I'm mostly loving it!

It looks absolutely stunning, and the level designs are (so far at least, I'm on level 2) astoundingly good.
Tons of secrets hidden away, and the puzzles are fun without being overly taxing.

However...
The shooty bang-bang action is mostly fun, but it's clear that the end of level bosses were designed with multiplayer in mind.
The sheer number of baddies that appear at points are overwhelming, to the point that I'm starting to want an 'Easy Mode' mod!
Also, some hidden areas can only be accessed by certain characters, so be prepared to play through each level a few times if, like me, you don't do the online co-op thing.

Still gets a massive thumbs up though!

Necropost:

So, it turns out I'm crap at games and couldn't get past level 2 without resorting to a trainer for infinite health. (Not a dig at the game, I really am crap!)
It's still alot of fun, I just wish it was a bit more forgiving in the difficult bits.
The only criticism I could give is that it feels a bit like a PS2 game, which oddly dates it.
But the graphics, especially the character models, are fantastic. And it's still alot of fun!

Worth it if you see it on sale
