Bloody hell Pat settle down will ya!
Well my reviews this morning seem to be about the pacing of stories with long term plans. I was really looking forward to 'Books of Invasion' suspecting it'd be a real return to form for Slaine after, well just about everything since 'Horned God'. The first book however I wasn't too keen on. The whole thing seemed like a collection of set pieces and there's no real time for the things to come to life. With break neck speed we're straight into the invasion, Balor the old enemy is tossed aside, Moloch a new enemy is shoved our way and then when all that is done, he charges back to commit a terrible act to make us hurriedly aware of how terrible he is. Wow thats a lot to get through in 44 pages!
Its reads like a summary of events and doesn't have time to breathe, to give the characters enough life for me to really care. Mind for all that its certainly breath-taking and maybe the crazy pace is there to make it read like a Greek epic or something? A series of magnificent events with all other stuff that slows things down stripped out and leaving a pure brutal thrill in its wake? Its certainly a improvement on recent Slaine but not yet the return to form I'd hoped for.
A brutal blur.
