Ok we have a great thread for 2000ad artwork that you own , this is a thread for other comics , but keep it only to British artist ......does not matter where it was published ...
to start here's David Hitchcock page from Zombies 2 a British graphic novel ...
Nice! Here's my favourite non-2000AD page - Johnny Nemo by Mr Brett Ewins:
Cam Kennedy - Boba Fett.
I'd give my eye-teeth for an original page of Cam's art... and that Johnny Nemo page has my favourite line from the whole run in Deadline: "That's quite a long sentence. For me." Milligan genius.
Cheers
Jim
Not completely comic art, but I've a collection of 100+ animation cels and backup art from Akira. Twas a former hobby of mine...as addictive and expensive as collecting 2000AD stuff!
Gallery over here.

I know this is not an English artist but I'm guessing the Akira isn't either, anyway I just want to share this because I love it. The cover to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issues 23 (original series).

Dunk, one of those images includes D'Israeli's postal address. I doubt it's a state secret but you might want to crop it a little.

Hi both. I picked it up at the Bristol Comicon charity auction but don't know whether it was done specifically for that.
It was scandalous really. I picked it up for £25 as it seemed that no-one else knew who Syd Jordan was. Picked up a Roy of the Rovers pencil sketch by Barry Mitchell for £5 for similar reasons.

Ain't Spider-man just the best character for one of those 'moving round the page shots' (I assume that's the technical term!) he's just born for that kinda page. That's bloody lovely.

Yeah, that Sal Buscema spread is amazing. At first glance I thought it was by John Romita Jnr.
I grew up on a diet of Sal Buscema Avengers and Hulk art in Mighty World of Marvel. He seemed to be drawing Hulk for years (quick glance online – 10 years!).
Quite surprised at how much his style changed.

Nah, this is all Sal, Jim. Pencils and inks. He had a great run on Spectacular Spider-Man back in the 90's. Drew a fantastic Carnage and Venom. For me he's a definitive Marvel artist. Certainly my favorite Hulk artist of all time. He gets no love these days. I like to compare him to Ron Smith as he was the guy they knew could bulldoze art out to make a deadline but just like Ron, there's such an energy off his stuff when he's on and sadly, he's never remembered when it comes to the golden boys. Mind you, must have sucked balls having John as your brother! Haha! Talk about looking over your shoulder...
Seal Buscema- totally agree. His work is always worth a look, especially if he's inking himself. Must get round to scanning my Alan Davis page from Batman and the Outsiders.

That's something of a revelation. I really only encountered his work in those B&W Marvel reprints from the 70s and early 80s that used to appear in British newsagents and I had him down as one of a pack of fairly generic Marvel artists of that era, but under his own inks a whole layer of extra energy and character emerges. Very impressed!

Well, in all fairness, that's how history has treated him. He was never some groundbreaking artist in terms of his style, I accept that. His style never really evolved that much. It was always pretty predictable in terms of staging and design (All his women look like they stepped out of How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way) and sometimes his posing looked terribly flat. I guess it's one of those cases where you can tell when he's phoning it in and other times where he's excited about what he's drawing. His run on Spidey was awesome though. Playing around with lots of black and lots of interesting splash pages. His work's not particularly expensive either. I read an interview with him and gradually he just got phased out from the A-list and that always makes me sad to hear. A real workhorse and his art's like comfort food to me. You know what to expect most of the time but it's exactly how you'd like it.
I have this work from Will Kirkby, really love it!

First came across this story reprinted in the pages of Star Wars Weekly back in the day, and it had always stuck in my mind. It first saw print in those oversized Marvel Preview Mags, over in the States.
Its funny most times when art is put up here people talk about the penciler but when its inked by Klaus Janson he gets a mention. He's such an inking giant. Love, love love his stuff.
Never posted my art collection before so maybe it's about time so here are some of my non -2000ad pages.
Enjoy. Marc lamning Planet of the Apes, and 2 pages of fully painted Siku.
2 pages of Battle Picture weekly Jim watson back page art. More later.

This is a shout-out to my LCS 'Big Bang Comics' in Dublin & Irish artist extraordinaire Will Sliney.
Marvel's 'Fearless Defenders' was launched this week, and anyone who pre-ordered got a free Will Sliney sketch (or the option of meeting Will on Wednesday night in Big Bang Comics this week).
I couldn't make the trip on Wednesday, but popped in yesterday.
Will had left several sketches behind for fans that couldn't make the signing, and I picked up this rather cool Bishop one.
I also picked up a copy of Fearless Defenders number 1 (which I intend to support).
Total cost for comic & sketch: €2.00. What a nice bunch of chaps.
Just got my favourite page from Steve Dillon's Gen13 comic.
A nice pub scene.

Caught the story over on CAF, Dale. A pretty amazing - and historic page of art, no wonder it grabbed your attention.
How you managed to snag the original art years later, is no doubt, another story..
Those Sonic's by Mick are brilliant as well. Is there nowt that man cant do?
Cheers, dale. That McMahon spent one of the most productive and inspired periods of his career producing work of that quality for an undiscriminating audience who still shat their pants is something the publishers of Toxic and everyone who moaned to Dave Bishop about Howler's "cartoony" art should be made to answer for.
Nice Sonic pages Dale. I managed to pick up a nice one from Mick a while ago. I'll post it when I get a chance.
Did you catch the ABC Warriors Sonic The Hedgehog crossover story?

Great page. Alcatena is a superb artist - I'd love to see the original art for some of the work he did on various issues of Starblazer (though I have no idea if that stuff is even out there.)
A friend of a friend heard I was into original art and recommended getting a commission done from a UK base artist called Dave Golding.
He normally charges £20 for an A4 character piece, and £10 for an A5 character piece, but those prices are 50% cheaper via Ebay.
Thought it was worth a punt, so asked for a few commissions from him.
He's a thoroughly nice chap and a great artist. I received some great pages off him yesterday.

Um....
I was an STC reader, thanks very much, and so were plenty of the younger boarders here (Crazyfox and Shieldipez for two). I didn't 'shit my pants' and I highly resent your insulting contention that I couldn't be as discerning about what comic art I liked at that age as
you lot were reading the likes of O'Neill, McMahon and McCarthy in 70s/80s 2000AD.
STC was a great 'gateway' comic the likes of which doesn't currently exist that bridged the gap between the strictly kiddie-fodder stuff and the likes of 2000AD. In fact I attribute STC as the reason for my being here today, as I recognised some of my favourite STC creator names in 2000AD and thought I probably couldn't go wrong making the leap to Tharg's wares. We weren't all lucky enough to read the likes of
Sky Chariots first time around and the Sonic stuff happens to be how some of us were first introduced to McMahon - I don't see that it makes our lifelong appreciation of such a talented artist any less fucking valid.
Give it another few years and some of us here will be shitting our pants all over again.

Let's not go that far...
You're an intelligent and perceptive fella, Jimbo; I'm glad such fantastic McMahon work found an appreciative audience and that it led you here. I first read Sky Chariots around the same time you were digging STC.
Those Sonic pictures were a bit of a reminder of how he used to be a fairly likeable looking little fellow, before Sega decided to Pepsi-Max him and make him 'street' (geeetar rock, hip hop poses, extreme sports rubbish, etc).
Cheers Sauchie, glad you didn't take my comment to heart - you must have struck a nerve there! Think I was just feeling generally grumpy about the whole stupid Titgate fiasco and looking to vent. Suffice to say that McMahon's talents were by no means being wasted at that time.
Oh I totally missed that - yeah I was a huge fan of STC before even reading Marvel let alone 2000ad - Nigel Dobbyn was uploading some of his Knuckles pages on DevArt ... gave me goosebumps.
AND GOOSEBUMPS IS ANOTHER MATTER ENTIRELY said the nineties kid.
Im aware, of course, that Mick produced art for STC - but it was something id totally missed at the time. But those cover's are great, arent they.
Maybe a daft question, but are ALL those cover's by Mick?

All by Mick, but the latter ones are coloured by a certain John 'Nikolai Dante' Burns, hence the different 'look'. Burns was the main colourist on STC, like our own Chris Blythe, on any occasions that artists didn't colour their work themselves.

I think the John Burns colourist is a different chap than the John Burns Dante artist, DJ.
I was querying this on a recent Rogue page Dale had up for auction.
They're possibly related though!

Presumably, that's why he was - and still is (http://www.classicalcomics.com/books/janeeyre.html) - often credited as John M Burns.
John 'Magnificent' Burns.
That he is Joe.
Just heard from Dale- both are in fact John 'M' Burns (the colourist Mr. Burns being the nephew of the 2000AD artist).
Colourist was quite prolific with Eagle & Marvel reprints apparently (as well as STC obviously, and some Simon Coleby Rogue Trooper).
Boo-urns to the lot of ya!
The internet has lied to me! I did do some checking beforehand, but every reference I found seemed to bear me out;
John M Burns (sometimes John Burns) is an artist and colourist whose career spans back to the 1960s. For Sonic the Comic, Burns only ever provided colouring for other artist's work, although his style of using vivid colours was almost instantly recognisable. Outside of STC, Burns has drawn for national newspapers, 2000AD and adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.
Ah well, live and learn!

Those Sonic The Comic pages are stunning, it's both a crime that STC hasn't been collected in TPB (outside of those two "volumes" they did that only included Sonic strips) and for one person to own all those pages!
For those that never had experienced STC it was a quality child friendly (I know quality aimed at children rarely exists, something I now understand more than ever as a parent!) anthology comic, it wasn't all Sonic related, I recently found a few old STC and a bunch of progs that I never knew I had so either STC led me onto 2000AD, admittedly for a short while, or maybe Judge Anderson on the cover in her pants that appealed to the younger me. Possibly the pants thing.

Hi Guys,
Some truly great artwork on here..
Here's a piece that arrived for me today from Canada...Bought via CAF site and featuring Hitman by John McCrea....Done in 20004 as a convention sketch but measures 12" by 18"......Just a great piece of McCrea artwork. Bought for my sons' birthday ( and his collection ), but looking at it I'm surely tempted to keep it myself...Joking of course ... ::)
Cheers,
Bob
Hi Guys,
Just got 'into' Transmetropolian recently, and absolutely love that Spider Jerusalem piece by Darrick Robertson than Simontm has posted....Really excellent artwork...
Here's a piece ( again ) by the hugely talented and IMO under-rated John McCrea of Billy Butcher from 'The Boys' done at Thoughtbubble, Leeds 2012 for only £20 !! ?? ......Amazingly talented guy, and what a really, really nice, and very 'chatty' bloke...
Ps : If anyone here has missed out on reading 'The Boys'........Grab the series as soon as you can, and catch up......12 volumes in its' entirity, and it's just epic......Everything you want ( certainly what I want anyway ) in a graphic novel.......Great artwork, Humour, violence, Conspiracies, sex, politics, did I mention gratuitous violence ??, corrupt superheroes, and of course, lashing of sex and gratuitous violence...Just a great series......
Question : If you wanted to join the 'elite' superhero team on earth .......What would you do ???? All explained in Volume 1........ Highly recommended...
Cheers,
Bob
Nice pages Bob.
I love John McCreas stuff.
Shoulda got a sketch off him when I met him last year. :'(
Hi again, Guys,
The very last piece of artwork that I've got, that is non 2000AD related, is a Wolverine Zombie convention sketch by the amazing Sean Phillips...Artist for the Marvel Comics Zombie series.....Bought this from the CAF site a few months ago....
I'm a big fan of his work, and have about 5 original published pieces featuring Devlin Waugh...
At the moment just waiting for a convention sketch by John McCrea ( again ) to arrive at my home of The Punisher....Also bought from the CAF website....Think I need to stop going there, as I'm skint again..
Cheers,
Bob

Very nice sketches
Cheers, Skullmo,
Yes, definitely worth the visit.......The sketches are in Watercolour by Sean Phillips. He was one of the original artists of the Marvel Zombies series of graphic novels...The 1st sketch is an 'ordinary' Hulk...The second sketch is the Zombie Hulk after tearing off Iron Mans' head.
Not read any of the Marvel Zombies but quite liked this artwork when I saw it.....Especially as it's in colour..The Zombie Hulk is for my sons' birthday or Xmas and will match the Zombie Wolverine he's already got..
A present for my Dad's upcoming birthday, seeing as he's become a huge Breaking Bad fan (and he's a nicer Dad than Walter White to boot!)
A commission by Dave Golding.
So what's your take on 'Production Art' everyone?
I know it's technically not Original Art, but sometimes when trawling Ebay I see a piece that catches my eye.
Couldn't pass up this hand coloured Production Art 'Green Goblin' number 1 cover for $25 recently.
A very nice collectible, but not something i'll be buying a lot of methinks.

Personally, I like it (but don't have any). One look at the glorious 2000AD pieces on Steve Cook's blog (http://secret-oranges.blogspot.com/) is enough to show that the production art itself also often represents something unique and, with colouring by the likes of Tom Frame, should be seen as one-off pieces of art in it's own right.

Good example & point Ming.
Would some kind person on this forum, please explain to me the difference between the two.......I understand 'original artwork', but despite having seen several really nice pieces of 'Production Art' at very good prices indeed, I'm unsure what they are and have hesitated to buy any !!...Are they prints of the originals and then re-coloured or what ??

My understanding is that they're essentially photocopies of original art on acetate overlays for colouring and/or lettering purposes. I may be wrong, of course... :-\

My take on production art that I've come across (mostly on EBay)- a copy of the original art, sized and bordered for the print process, usually hand coloured by a professional colourist (although I'm sure it could also be coloured by another artist or by the original artist themselves).
Is it something I'd view as 'original art'? Don't know for sure.
But I've seen copies of the same page in different formats all described as the 'original art' (i.e. prelim / pencils / inked pencils / painted page).
There's production art and there's production art... I've seen (often) acetate copies used in B&W artwork reproduction /printing process but these are a long way from the one-off, hand coloured pieces such as those featured to such effect on Steve's blog. Check out a few of the 2000AD covers he's posted there, Bob - I'm sure you'll get what I mean.
Thanks for the info guys... :)
So...if I understand correctly......they are ( 'Rare' - Thanks Skullmo, got the joke relating to a previous thread ) ....essentially photocopies of the originals, usually on acetate, and then recoloured / tidied up to recreate the original......albeit in sharper inking and 'fresher' colouring...And colouring / lettering may ( or may not be done by original artist / letterer )..... Is that about it ??
They certainly look good, but don't think I'll be tempted down this route.....FFS, it's bad enough :'( trying to get the pieces I actually want, without adding even more to try and collect !!.....I can understand the collectors' though, it certainly appears to be considerably cheaper than the 'route' I've chosen...
Cam Kennedy's Fighting Mann from the pages of Battle 1979 i think, I whis they would reprint this, i have an issue or 2 and Cam's work is out standing.

That is a very nice page indeed,
James - and ive often popped by on CAF to take another look. Seem to remember being quite keen on Fighting Mann, but i never did get to see how this strip ended, so i wouldnt mind a reprint of this, either.

Yeah, that's an absolutely fantastic page (great to see it on CAF by the way, James). Looking at how the action is presented and the way that Cam guides your eye with each panel, it's clearly the work of a very accomplished storyteller. Cam still has a bunch of Fighting Mann pages available, I think...

Cracking stuff! I loved Bisley's Hellblazer stuff
Indeed, some very nice art there, C.M.K!
Some very nice Biz pages there CMK.
Here's a poorly photographed pic of the 2nd best comic in the world 'OINK'.
No 80's childhood was complete without the 1-2 punch of an issue of 2000AD & OINK being read back to back.
The artist is the legendary Lew Stringer, and is notable due to the fact he doesn't do much painted work.
It's also the sole reason that I couldn't afford a Three-A Mongrol figurine...but I think I made the right decision!
Slightly better pic this time...
It's 'Pete and his Pimple', again from Oink, again by Lew Stringer.
Lew Stringer is great! I loved oink.
Some more Hellblazer pages, especially for Skullmo!!

I love Biz's Hellblazer stuff. I was trying to get a B/W page when the cover came along and I just could not turn it down.
You picked up some great pages there!
Chris Weston Rocketeer sketch from LSCC in Feb
Lovely Hellblazer pages there Ken .....not as nice as those 2 other pages thou :-*
Nice art by Chris ... his sketches are really not sketches ... more like complete finished art ...
Really nice Rocketeer sketch there...Chiefy.
I've posted a link in the eBay Watch thread yesterday as someone ( not me ) has 2000AD sketches ( I think ) for sale on eBay...
Links are included in the post and there are no bids on any yet......
Sketches for Sale are
Torquemada by Chris Weston
Zenith by Steve Yeowell
Nemesis by Henry Flint
and A Judge Dredd by Dean Ormston....
Cheers
Cheers guys. That Rocketeer one is not sketchy at all. He did it with no reference as chatted to me at the same time. Hero.
Here's a few more from LSCC. Stay Puft by Nick Roche with added colours by John-Paul Bove (He digitally coloured it at the show and printed it out), a Rocket Raccoon & Groot by JK Woodward and a Usagi Yojimbo by Rebekah Issacs.
My 2nd Makabre (well, I actually bought this one first).
I love Alcatena's work on this strip.
Some more Lew Stinger...'The Vampire Brats' from Buster.
I'm a man-child alright???
Adi Granov concept art for the Iron Man 2 movie. Pencil sketch on A3. Am in big trouble if the Missus finds out... :)
(Sorry if the picture is a bit poor quality...)
Some great stuff here that I have just seen.
The Iron Man sketch is lovely.
And those Vampire Brats - brilliant!
I just got this from Wake - Skreemer is a great story! Art by Brett Ewins and Steve Dillon.
Ah! I should have known who'd had this! Lovely stuff indeed!
Uh Skullmo that's a nice page. I just picked up this page from the post office from Wake as well.
So happy with it.
I've not come across Skreemer, and a number of people are recommending it to me. If this artwork is anything to go, I should dive right in!
Got this from Dale this week. I read Battle Action Force when I was a kid, and the moment I saw this I remembered it from the comic. I'm usually rubbish at remembering comic book scenes (so I get lots of value from re-reading them :)), but this one clearly stuck out. Had to have it... Top quality John Cooper.
Uh sorry about that my image has broken. I'll try again on that Skreemer page.
Great stuff, Colin. As ive said, ive never come across Skreemer before. But since these pages have started popping up its deffo piqued my interest - and since buying some pages by Brett from Wake recently i cant get enough of his work at the moment.
Its great how the art just screams out both Ewins and Dillon's styles, isnt it. Slightly disorientating - but in a good way!

Yeah all the more so as back in the original issues it just says art by rather than noting (as I believe is the case) that Brett pencilled and Steve inked. I always used to puzzle over the process as some panel seem so clearly by Steve Dillon and other so definitively Brett Ewins. Over all though it simply looks a triumph.
The Ewins pages are class lads, lucky to get them.
Well worth a read for those who havent, one of my favourite non 2000ad stories(even though it was originall intended to be pitched to 2000ad). Enigma and Egypt, more of Milligans miniseries that are worth a read.
The art is very strange, as Colin has said its hard to identify some of the panels, they are such a blend of the two artists.

Brett told me that he did the page layouts and then gave the pages to Steve to pencil (they shared a studio at the time). He then went over the pencils to add his style to some of the elements (I think he mentioned chins specifically). Brett then did the inking to finish the pages himself. This fits with some panels clearly showing Steve's pencils and others looking more like Brett's.
The two styles mesh so well together, which is surprising considering how different they are as artists.
The first I saw of the Dillon/Ewins mix was in the Simply Dying Bad Company story that was done for a charity event.

Arh now that's a much more satisfying explanation than the sites that list the credits as I state them. It really explains why their styles are so wonderfully intertwined.
Here's a couple of pages from the late, great Martin Emond. He never did all that much for 2000AD, his brilliant Chopper one-off 'Dead Man's Curve' and a couple of pinups are the only things I can think of. I can only imagine what his take on certain characters would have been like...
These are from my favourite comic of his the seminal 'White Trash' with Gordon Rennie.

I've considered it too, but as they would be empty in about 2 hours I don't think it would support me....!
I met Garth Ennis at a preacher signing in Dublin and got him to sign that issue for me, he told me that, although he knows nothing about art, he reckoned '...that one turned out really nice'.
I agree.
If that signing was in the 90's I may have been in the Q behind you!

If it was legal to marry a piece of paper, I'd be down on one knee right now!
Right then - it's off in the car soon to collect my latest acquisition by Mr B. Bolland :D
Firstly, I'm posting it here so it's not a 2000AD piece.
Secondly, I still own a car, both kidneys and am not living in the shed, so it's not Batman either.
I shall post a picture upon my return...
i dont suppose anyone here has anything from childrens UK comics from the 70's-80's ? Whoopee etc.. ? Im after a certain artist/story combo.

SB! - but thanks for the comments Guys.
@ Dale and Bob, the Concrete piece has never been published - as far as i can tell (certainly not in any Concrete comics). I bought this piece off a US collector, via CAF, a couple of years ago.
I dont think it was a commission, as its not dedicated - thank grud!
So i suspect it was drawn (either beforehand or during) for a stateside convention - or some such, and offered for sale there.
Judge Jack,
I absolutely love that Concrete piece....
Paul Chadwicks' artwork is astonishing in Black and White.....I've had another visit to your CAF page ( again ), and those Black and Whites are all incredible....BUT....As good as the B/W's are those watercolours are absolutely sublime.....
What a collection... :o
Wow. That Concrete piece is just wonderful Judge Jack. It has a bit of a Gean Giraud vibe to it. Superb.
Stew.
Cheers again, Bob. When i was arranging my commission's from Paul, he told me that he prefers to work in watercolours. You need to commission him!
And 100% spot-on, SKD. Around 1990/91, a definite Moebius influence was visible in Paul's work - which fitted incredibily well, i thought.
Id always thought Paul's style was totally his own creation - and it largely is, but if you look long enough you can see traces of Moebius - along with a Jack Kirby vibe that pops up every now and again.
Paul tells a neat little story, on his blog, about meeting Moebius - here (http://concrete.blogs.com/paul_chadwicks_weblog/2012/03/jean-giraud-has-left-us.html)
This original art habit is a sad and terrible thing. Somehow I stumbled across this

A piece I would simply love to own. Wasp is my favourite Marvel character (or Captain Britain) and the Stern Buscema run on Avengers among my top 15 runs of all time. This page is therefore to die for and I'm forced to sit here torturing myself as this goes out of range and I wonder how far I can stretch things to get it... if only I wasn't fishing in other waters right now...
I agree Colin_YNWA......
This 'collecting' thing is dreadful, and the thing is... it always gets worse !!....... :D
I'm really, really, skint at the moment ( after my Bob Molesworth 'Mongrol' commission ) and am trying to save frantically for a piece of artwork on CAF that I've had my eye on for ages.........
Then.......I see Judge Jacks' ..Concrete pieces and I really start thinking about getting a commission by Paul Chadwick.......
Then...... I see Hippynumber1's Leigh Gallagher double page spread of Defoe and his Gang and think I really want a piece like that......
Then...... SimeonB...has 2 wonderful Gallagher pieces of Defoe and I think, I wonder if Leigh Gallagher does commissions ??
And I've also seen King Carlos' commission work and think ....AAaaaaahhhhh!!!!!
Too much Great Art and I've not got enough / any money........:'(
I know exactly where you are coming from, Bob. I have 1 or 2 more pages coming, and then I am skint. Stoney broke, My artwork fund is bare... I have some saving up to do for the next pieces which won't be available for a few months.
And, yes, Leigh does do commissions!
And yes, I am seriously contemplating selling a kidney
Thanks for that SimeonB.......
I'll add Mr Gallagher onto the list of commissions I would like done when I've got some cash again....
He now joins the list of Paul Chadwick and Carlos Ezquerra + the piece I'm lusting after on CAF....
Unfortunately, I don't think my kidneys would much good to sell, after the 'severe' bashing they took in my youth from gargantuan amounts of Special Brew and Skol Super Strength lager followed by Vodka and Coke 'chasers'......Aaaahhh....The trials and tribulations of a youth, mis-spent in Scotland !!!
Cheers... :D

A small update on my Madame Xanadu piece. It isn't Madame Xanadu. The comic, Madame Xanadu Issue 1, contained a short story "Science Fiction Shocker" drawn by Brian Bolland and written by J. M. DeMatteis. It was called "Falling Down To Heaven". This is Page 5 of that story.

Been on a Brendan McCarthy trip of late, and while im waiting for the Strange Days series to land, this little vintage sketch - which set me back 69p(!), makes a nicely fitting addition to my collection.

69p!!! What a snag that is! I know it isn't exactly the Mona Lisa, but 69p is a bargain in anyone's book :)
Nice one, JJ
Yep, got to agree with SimeonB here.....
Only 69 pence for a 'convention' style sketch from one of the great 2000AD artists......and signed as well !!
Amazing, when you think that this type of 'sketch' usually costs about £20 from artists at Comic Conventions....
I thought I got a bargain ( and I did ) with my Henry Flint 'Mongrol' sketch for £14.25, but that one's a winner in every way Judge Jack...

I umm'd and ahh'd and couldn't decide if I should get a Risso piece. £100 for full figure was out of my price bracket but when I went up to him on the Sunday and asked about his schedule I was shocked that he said he was free for sketches. I ended up getting a headshot for £50 but it's a good un and I didn't know if I 'd ever get another chance to get something from him. Out of interest I provided him with reference for a Dredd sketch but said he'd rather do something else, hence the Viking.

These were taken on my phone but I'll put up some scans on CAF when I get the chance.

£50 is my upper limit for a con sketch. (I've paid a bit more for a
pre con sketch. I paid £80 for a Paulo Rivera Deathlok but that was more of a commission to be honest).
Can you believe Neal Adams was charging £200 for a bust sketch! and even worse £20 to get a comic signed. He's the only comic creator I've ever known to charge for signatures.
£200! :o That's taking the piss!
We are truly spoiled by the 2k creators in this respect...

He had a massive stand with loads of pre done sketches/commissions. There was a coloured A4 Superman piece (no background) that I thought was so-so. I then looked at the price tag. £1500. Ouch.

Been on a Brendan McCarthy trip of late, and while im waiting for the Strange Days series to land, this little vintage sketch - which set me back 69p(!), makes a nicely fitting addition to my collection.

Absolutely! I have not yet paid for a sketch from one of the 2000AD droids! They are generous with both their time and their talent.

One of my favorite pages of Warhammer by Colin MacNeil
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/fatboydale/1%20odd%20art/070_zpsc670ff92.jpg)
A NI based Ebay seller had a sh!t load of Pugh, Bisley and McCrea pages up over the past few days.
I literally couldn't resist a Biz page for 40 quid, so bid on two.
Ended up with this one...
A very nice Frank Teran 'Kazar' page.
Going for peanuts on Ebay yesterday.
I bought it mainly just to annoy Colin_YNWA. ;)
Funnily enough I did consider bidding on that (or buying was it a buy it now?) but decided against it for two reasons. It is a lovely page, but the book isn't a great Ka-Zar book (mind there are many you cna say that about) and doesn't have two of the elements that would make my eventual Ka-Zar purchase which are of course dinosaurs and Zabu.
Still lovely page, well done.
I'll be honest with you- I bought it more for the fact it's a lovely example of Teran's work than it was Kazar.
It wasn't 'buy it now', and I won it with an opening bid placed a week before.
Just works out like that sometimes.
Another recent purchase much closer to my heart; a very early 'Tom Thug' (from Oink 7) by Lew Stringer.
Lew also sent me a very nice note with it, giving out about the fact the editors tip-exed over his 'Foot of the page' gag (a foot at the bottom of the page).
The Philistines!
That Tom Thug is brilliant! And i love the foot of the page gag!
With this discussion of sketches, can anyone explain to me the habit some artists have of taking a photograph of you with the finished article? When I've asked I've never got a response that makes sense to me. Is it something to do with trying to stop you selling them on later? So if sketches end up on Ebay then the artists can compare details and refuse to sell you another one in the future?

HaHa! Nice Watchmen pages Dale, especially that first one which would look great on the wall.
Not so much a fan of the black mounting board though - thats just too oppressive isn't it?
I prefer black mounting board to white.
Shocking pink always works really well too.
Well, a slow day at work has given me the opportunity to knock up this little beauty:
I await Tharg's call for professional Colourist work. ;)
Firstly, I think the mounting is too 'tight' anyway. This might be down to the actual artwork but there is no border at all round the edge of the artwork, which really doesn't help.
For me, the white border allows the art to come forward whereas the black border is more prominent on the right-hand picture and is pushing the art to the background. It's almost like you are looking at it through a letterbox.
Now, to my eye, the white washes out the artwork while the black allows the lighter areas to pop forward! But I'm famous for knowing nothing!
Try it with shocking pink!
All depends what compliments the art really. Black mounting but with a white boarder can look really well.

hippy - I agree that it does look a little washed out with the white. I would probably have included a thin black border if I was framing it myself with the white mount. Also, as o1s1n suggested a white border would have helped with the black mounting board.
There's no wrong answer, just personal preference, but if it were me I would go with the white mount.
The pink is very fetching though, don't you think?

This be truth. The white border makes no real difference to the Rorschach image's grey and black tones, but the Nite Owl part of the triptych just vanishes into the acres of white, and all the contrast and intensity of the Comedian headshot is blanded out completely.
You could say the same (or the opposite) about the choice of such a large area of solid black as a mount, but I'd still go for a darker background, to offer some contrast to the lighter grey tones which dominate the image area of the art. Black and a colour works, as does white and a colour, but grey tones are only really complemented by lighter or darker grey tones - I'd go for matte dark grey and a smaller mount.

He explained to me in London this year at the comic con that all his covers go to one buyer, thus the chances of seeing much of his more recent work on the market is limited - I try to pick it up when I see it

I believe Jim wrote that story too. Anyway, I read it at the time and the hero crash lands by ejecting inside a bubble of some kind that bounces until it comes to rest on the planet surface. It was like a womb crossed with an ejection seat.
Mad, yet brilliant. I never forgot that landing. Many years later I remember thinking of Jim and this story again when I saw how the first NASA rovers (pre-Curiosity) were deployed on the Martian surface. A brilliant man that Jim Baikie.
NASA read the mind of Jim Baikie...

Lovely stuff Chief.
Picked up a few pages of 'Hell's Highway' from Action comic recently, dating back to the year of my birth, 1976. Here's the most action-packed (pun not intended) - art is by the late Mike White, probably best known round these parts for his work on Mean Arena, Disaster 1990 and Abelard Snazz. What's particularly fascinating about this one (to me, anyway) is that it was presumably drawn pre-ban, but published a couple of months afterwards, meaning there's some very clear censorship in the art and dialogue. The chap at the bottom left is clearly intended to be dead, but the spray of blood from his chest has been whited-out, and dialogue changed to show he's only been 'winged'. Likewise, all the people flattened by the bank vault door have clearly been splattered, but no, they're only 'unconscious'. Gritty art nonetheless.
It looks like there's been massive dialogue change. Interesting stuff...
Very cool and interesting. I love all that textural stuff; comics as narratives that are never fully complete. Beautiful artwork too.
Really nice Greg, very interesting to see the censorship on the page. Sid Bicknell and Nick Landau took over as Editors and had to tone it down.
Just curious, is it definitely Mike White?
I think so, David, though I wouldn't say he's an artist I'm very knowledgeable about - I could be wrong. I have three other pages (from the first couple of episodes of the series, pre-ban) and the art all seems pretty similar to me. It was my understanding that White drew it until January 1977 when Jim Eldridge took over - this page is from December '76. If anyone else drew it, it's not documented over on The Sevenpenny Nightmare.
Wow I love that aspect of original art the little, or well in this case considerable, insights you get into the creative process.
Another thing for me about that one if you'd have asked me who'd done it prior to saying I'd have plugged got Jose Ortiz. In certain panels I'd have sworn blind it was by him. I often get stuff like this and people either don't agree, or see comparisons with some one else, but here to my eyes (and a lot of it is around the eyes as it goes) its very Ortiz.
I can totally see what you're saying, Colin - the top left and bottom left panels in particular have an Ortiz vibe for sure. I've some bigger scans on my CAF site of three of the panels (including the 'winged him' one) if anyone wants a closer look. Plus scans of other pages of the same episode are here, down at the bottom: http://www.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk/?p=1120 (http://www.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk/?p=1120)
Its from the 3rd issue post ban, Mike white had left 'Hell's Highway' to draw Kids Rule pre ban, according to Martin Bakers book. It still looks like Mike Whites earlier art on 'Hell's Highway' but those panels that are mentioned look slightly different.
Really great page.
Wow! Cheers for that info, David! This page has turned out to hold a lot more mystery than I realised.
Great page , and without any info , i would have Jose Ortiz was the artist ??
The more I look at scans of the rest of the story, the more convinced I am that you guys are right and I've unexpectedly scored an Ortiz! Is there any way to find out for certain?
I'd have a go at giving David Roach a look on FB he is pretty sharp on IDing artists, and he is a huge Ortiz fan.
At first look I thought Ortiz too :-)

Thanks for the suggestion, David!
...I'm may be wrong but I see a little more similarity to Mike White.
But check this out...lovely bit of drawing...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqMi6X_fpAs
Yeah, David Roach is definitely yer man. FWIW, I'm not bad at this sort of thing and I agree that the big profile in the first panel is has a strong Ortiz-y vibe to it, but I'm not getting Ortiz from the inks. There's some smudgy dry-brush work that was very typical of Mike White's style, but his figures were chunkier.
I'm pretty certain there's more than one pair of hands at work here, and there's a little voice in the back of my head that looks at the b/g in panel 1, a lot of the hands, and particularly panel 7 and wants to say "Jim Baikie".
I know that doesn't help!
Cheers
Jim
In some ways it does help, Jim - and it's a lot of fun to speculate either way! What you say about the smudgy quality of some of the inking is certainly present and correct on the other pages I've got that I know are definitely Mike White. Similarly, Danny Kuziak (the main character with the 70s-style mop of dark hair) seems to be drawn pretty much identically to earlier episodes. Maybe the page began as White's work and was touched up or revised by another artist? It's a conundrum, all right.
A brilliant page that,
Greg - congrats on snagging it!
(Ive been watching these pages for
ages, and now ive seen the better scan of it, i wish id jumped on them!)
And for my money its Mike White - with, possibily, some alterations from somebody else, due to the artwork being altered/censored.
I dont think the publisher would have spent any real time, money or effort into censoring the pages, such as employing another artist to make any changes - thats not beyond the realms of possibility, of course. Though a quick look at some of the pages that were censored, reveal that pretty shoddy butchery was involved.
Quote from: maryanddavid on 06 September, 2013, 07:39:03 PM
Its from the 3rd issue post ban, Mike white had left 'Hell's Highway' to draw Kids Rule pre ban, according to Martin Bakers book.
When the ban took Action from the shelves (without checking, the last pre-ban issue is dated sometime in October? and it didnt return til December?) i think its been stated that the comic had six weeks worth of material already completed for the various strips, or near as damnit.
(And a couple of issues leading up to the ban saw self imposed censoreship applied to the comic in an attempt to deflect some of the oncoming heat, but alas, that proved fruitless).
So with that amount of backlog of material ready for use, its not impossible for these to be drawn by Mike. And the art is pretty consistant with other episodes he drew.
QuoteI don't think the publisher would have spent any real time, money or effort into censoring the pages, such as employing another artist to make any changes
They didn't have to employ artist to touch up, there was already on staff art Eds and assistant art Eds (themselves talented artists) whowould touch up and drastically change artwork as required.
I.P.C. had a policy that every page paid for was used, and with very few exceptions that hapened.
Fair point and one i dont disagree with, but my point was i wouldnt have thought theyd have employed, say, Ortiz to come in and alter Mike's art - and thus cause the confusion we have regarding the artist's identity.
Some of the censored pages in Martin's book are truly shocking in how theyve been altered.
And theres some equally bad examples in the last few pre-ban issues as well.
Which personally gives me the impression that somebody at the very top took a very hard line and said 'Right alter that, alter this, and spend no time on it', and that ultimately proved pointless, as the bulk of these pages never got used when Action returned. And only saw the light of day when Martin's book was released in the 90's.
Sorry, I missed that point, and yes powers that be did authorise some serious alterations on stories. I put a small piece on Facebook this eve coincidently, doing a pit of pimping for the new magg about the censorship on Inferno.

Another name thrown into the ring, and the plot thickens! Thanks for asking David, Dale.
I see those Jim Baikie touches now too that Jim Campbell mentioned. The bodies in panel 6, the legs and bullets in the final panel. It could be in-house reworking...a wonderful page.
Here's my theory...it's a combo job between Mike White and Jim Eldridge.
That might explain the way the panels seem to differ so strikingly...and the similarity to Jim Baikie. Both Jim's B and E worked on loads of publications for girls (Bunty?) at the time. Perhaps pressure to maintain the same sort of look forged similarities in their work early on.

Hello... forgive me if this slightly off-topic, but there is a charity print project featuring Dave Gibbons, Dave McKean and myself among many others and as many of you are collectors I just wanted to draw it to your attention.
My submission has already raised 100 pounds for the charity.

That story is a complete, the last page is a half page, do you have that? It looks very american in style. Smash used a lot of American reprints from Marvel and DC pre the IPC relaunch, I wonder if its possibly something from America?
I've had a quick flick through the Smash and Pow comics, any of the two and a half complete stories I have found in them all have copyright Marvel on them, so It may be from Marvel.

(There is a POW! annual in a charity shop near me at the moment. Also a Holy Terror going for about £2.50. I picked it up and thought: hmm, no thanks.)
Yes, sorry. I did mean Ron Turner. 'i' and 'u' are next to each other and I missed a letter out. I'm very tired you know...
Those Ridgway Doctor Who pages are bloom in' glorious. Is that a Morrison story, or possible Steve Parkhouse? Mind either way bloody lovely pages.

The wonderful Dr. Who pages are from 'Voyager', written by Steve Parkhouse: it's often considered one of the highpoints of the DWM strips.
Bah, no chance to modify - technically some of the pages are from 'Once Upon A Timelord...' which is the end of the story started in 'Voyager' , and Parkhouse's last script for DWM.
Bit of old school here , and just in time for the book release

And ill throw some initials back at you - TTA....?
If so, then im most interested to hear the full story......
You're in the right ballpark, JJ! I don't think this one appeared in a TTA book though, but in one of the associated 'Galactic Encounters' series. Anyway, it was originally commissioned as a Gordon R. Dickson book cover. As I say, I'll attempt to take some proper pics for CAF tomorrow (it's a fair size), but here's a full shot in the meantime:

My bad!!
Well, huge congratulations on snagging this!
That is phenominal!
Thanks, Iain. Growing up on those TTA books, I loved Peter's style and I've such vivid memories of his paintings. He was remarkably skilled in presenting a fully-formed scene that let your imagination run wild; such a great talent. Anyway, when I found out about this it was too good an opportunity to pass up. The detail is mindboggling (bear in mind this was reduced to standard small paperback size).
Wonderful! Is there anyone who didn't think those TTA books were the the dogs b*llocks?
Was that from his families website? I've noodled around there for a while, but all the pieces that really spoke to me have already been snagged.
Oh that IS LOVELY! :o
Ben - yeah, I picked this up from Peter's sister, Pam. There are a lot of great pieces shown on the website (http://www.peterelson.co.uk/ (http://www.peterelson.co.uk/)) but as you say, the pick of the bunch have already been sold. You can be fairly certain that if we both made a list of our top ten, they'd look pretty similar! Pebble in the Sky, The Outposter, The Early Williamson, Welcome to Mars, The Power of Blackness, Reach for the Stars, Prime Number... Those are some of my favourites, anyway. As it was, Mission to Universe was the best of the remaining bunch and I figured if I hung around, it wouldn't!
I'll get it up on CAF, with some detail shots, soon.
Gawd, there's some pictures in his gallery that give me goosebumps due to how much they meant to me when I scoured the TTA books as an impressionable child.
If I could own an original of one of those I'd probably weep openly for a bit when it turned up (keeping it at a safe distance to prevent water damage)
Cheers for the share Ming.
Dunk!

Yeah, I'd go with that list, though id have to add
Pirates Of The Asteroids and
especially Spaceship Graveyard, and
Derelict 2 - as they both featured in the classic
Space Wrecks TTA book.
But a good little site, that. I've had it saved in my favourites for a good few years, but haven't stopped by in a while. So thanks for the excuse/reminder to do so.

Those last two are indeed amazing; Derelict 2 was featured as a fold-out in Spacewreck, unless I'm imagining that... The sheer level of detail in Spaceship Graveyard is unbelievable. Man, these really bring back some memories, don't they?
That's really nice David. I never realised TTA was a thing, I just thought it was some space books I owned as a kid.

I managed to snag all four TTA books about 8 years ago, for about £15/20 a book.
Maybe more expensive now?, but they do pop up on eBay every now and again.
But brilliant books, and ill always heartily recommend them to anyone.
I've just purchased a piece that I'm VERY excited about. If it turns out as good as I suspect it might I'll have a new favourite piece. Anyway it'll probably take a while to get here so in anticipation and to try to quell my excitement I'll do that teaser snippet bit... thing is I don't normally think my pages 'deserve' this treatment and while this may misleadingly make you think this page is more 'important' than it is, its still bloody incredible.
Anyway waffle, waffle, waffle... I'll be impressed if anyone guess this but, you never know here.

Blueberry?
That's what I meant about someone thinking it was more 'important' than it is. While I do (potentially) adore this piece and it has a real Blueberry vibe to it (one of the reasons I like it so much), alas no, neither a Colin Wilson nor Jean Giraud (could you imagine owning one of those - I'm never leave it) Blueberry. Pages on my 'red' list, the stuff of fantasy alongside such things as an Asterix page, a Kirby double page spread and a page featuring Old One Eye from the original Flesh.
It looks ridiculously familiar! I know I should recognise this! Give us a clue...
He's a dream artist... or at least he would be if they got on with it.
(Either a dead give away, or no hope I'm not sure which)

Yeah anyone who has the misfortune of stumbling across my post on any sort of regular basis knows what a massive Jonah Hex fan I am. So you got the comic... doesn't necessarily help too much with the artist.
Its not Steve McNiven I'm afraid.
Well speaking of Asterix art (well I was a wee while ago) anyone got a few thousand Euros going spare.

Fantastic! That's a treasure, all right. Love it.
Cheers Greg, I understand a lot of the original pages ended up in skips :(

I certainly haven't seen a huge number of 'Hook Jaw' pages online - there's not that many on CAF - which makes it particularly exciting to see yours. The idea that a lot of the Action art got trashed definitely rings a bell. I've got a few Hook Jaw pages myself, but they're not Sola stuff - they're from one of the later post-ban annuals (though I never did figure out which one.)
Hook Jaw! :D Lovely! Sola has a great style.
I'm glad there's still some pages knocking about, I guess you folks are familiar with this Action website then, some nice originals on here too :)

That's very cool, but where on earth is it from? What are Iron Man and Madame Masque doing there?
Now this is a Mystery I would like to solve! Citizen Smith and I bought a collection of Marvel work from Mick Austin and he did not know where they were from as he did them in the early 80s. We have identified quite a few but are still searching so if anyone is a UK Marvel buff and can help it would be greatly appreciated. I would like to track down the issues in which they appeared as I like to own the comic with the art that I have :-)
Well a month ago I teased a page I'd bought and its finally here and quite quite beautiful. Probably a new favourite piece even if its not 2000ad. I've not had the chance to take a photo BUT will post the image from J H Williams III's website that I first saw. From Jonah Hex 35.

Superman & Batman in 'Worlds Finest' or 'The Dark Knight Returns'?
Joe Dredd & Johnny Alpha in 'Top Dog'?
No, no, no- there was only ever one true Clash of the Titans, and I just snagged both pages on EBay. :D

80s genius by Lew Stringer, can't believe I wasn't outbid by a tidal wave of dosh.

A spate of random-ish but nice artwork on Ebay at the moment, picked up a few cheap pages.
Nice Jock line-work, shame the page has already been dedicated to someone else. ::)
Worth a tenner though!
A vintage Steve Pugh from Hellblazer 39.
A Bryan Talbot Sandman page, liberated from fellow forumite Redbaz.
Ok, who asked for some art pics shoddily taken on a camera phone??
No?
Well, here you go anyway;
My one and only Starlord page, from 'Planet of the Damned' by Jorge Pena.
Ales Kot & Dean Ormston recently teamed up for a Darkness one-shot.
This was my favorite page; Darkness Resurrection.
Pencils by The Dean.
My love for Lew Stringer's work is unparalleled, particularly his earlier and more unusual stuff.
Here's a curio; the original art for some 'Pop Badges' that were given away with an issue of Oink.
Some grand stuff there Link, especially that Starlord page.
I'd love a Starlord page at some point.
Anyways, managed to snag this beauty recently, and for a decent price to boot. Very happy.

Lovely stuff boys (and an innovative idea for a unique collection, Chief).
I know there are quite a few Transformers fans on the forum, and despite my advancing years I'm still one at heart too.
IDW's recent Regeneration One series was, for me, the quintessential revival of a beloved childhood comic.
Inker (and art finisher) Stephen Baskerville held the look of the series together when penciling duties switched between Andrew Wildman & Guido Guidi.
He's also a pretty good artist in his own right too, as this Megatron / Starscream piece I snapped up off Ebay last night will attest.

Oh, oh oh, that is simply divine.
I saw that on eBay (or Comic Art Fans I forget which) and admired it, while holding off. Great great great buy.
I say well done through gritted teeth clenched tight in bitter jealously.
Just picked up a Becky Cloonan page from a Vertigo series I'm unfamiliar with- American Virgin.
Something quite Lloigor about it...
Oh, the Carrot!

Sometimes really unusual pieces surface on Ebay.
Take this recent purchase for example; a Sandman bookmark hand painted by Colleen Doran.
Pretty cool, eh?
A new purchase for me. Was a massive Dark Horse fan back in the very early 90's, so was glad to be able to snag this. Love Chris Warner's art, and loved those early Predator tales.
Lovely stuff! Those early Dark Horse 'Predator' comics were great fun!
Lovely page that. Never red it but it is very dynamic.
Fantastic Warner page there.
I too was a huge fan of Dark Horse at the time, in particular Preadator & Aliens.
Best of the era IMO was 'Bloody Sands of Time' (also by Warner).

Received this direct from artist Tony Roberts yesterday.
This was painted in 1973, and was originally used for the cover of the Thomas Disch novel '334'.
But I first came across it when it was used in the Spacewreck - Ghostships and Derelicts Of Space (A Terran Trade Authority Handbook) in 1979, which is an absolute fave of mine.

I used to read Krazy. Still have them. Was a cut above the other funnies at the time. It was in Krazy Comic (or actually was it Whizzer & Chips?) that I saw an advert for some new comic called 2000AD. Seems that advert worked.
They stretched the point though with Cheeky Weekly.
Jeez I feel old.
It's not comics, but I figured some of you might like to see this original piece by Dave Carson, best known for his Lovecraft art. I first encountered his stuff in the Fighting Fantasy gamebook 'Beneath Nightmare Castle' in the 80s. I'm sure I've seen that image before. At a guess I'd say it was in one of the older editions of the Call of Cthulhu RPG (or conceivably White Dwarf, before it became a house mag).

Ebay. I got a few more too! Lovely work.

I've got 2nd and 5th editions of CoC, and I don't
think it's in either of those, though I could be wrong. I'm sure it's either been in something RPG-related or a Lovecraft collection though.
Another Ninja Turtles pages - from return to New York. A classic page from anyone who knows the story.

Do you remember MukTuk Wolfsbreath: Hard-boiled Shaman?
No, of course you don't, no one does. Well, it was a series that ran in Terry LaBan's anthology comic CUD in the early 90's, combining Siberian Shamanism with a Sam Spade inner dialogue for the main character.
I loved it, enough in fact to buy a shedload of original art from the series for my birthday.
It's that joy of owning the actual physical originals of art/stories that had an affect on you years before. Can't be beat IMO.

I came late to the party for Alex De Campi's Grindhouse series, but a slew of recommendations (including a few on this forum) pointed me in the right direction.
Was chuffed to pick up this piece from the "controversial" Nebulina story, direct from artist John Lucas on The 'Bay.
Even more so that I received a detailed prelim of the page free of charge too. Really nice chap.
Although I'm temporarily retired from the original artwork collecting game I had a very pleasant surprise on Saturday.
My sister and her husband are living in San Francisco at the moment, and attended the comic-con last weekend.
Whilst there they bought me a gorgeous Excalibur page from Casey Jones.
This is from Warren Ellis' run on the book, a personal favorite from back in the day (Christ, 20 years ago).
To top it off, it's from my favorite single issue of Excalibur; the 'Days of Future Past' tie-in, number 94. Christmas can't come soon enough.

Nice page... but I hope you realise that saying 'I'm temporarily retired...' automatically makes a page appear that you have to have. At least, that's what always happens to me.

Sure no soon had I typed that as I saw an ABC Warriors page by Henry Flint going for £100 on Ebay.

I got made redundant at the end of last year and so had to make cut backs in terms of getting bigger commissions. With that in mind, over the last 6 months I opted for a new policy of getting sketch card sized pieces with a 'mug shot' theme. 9 different characters form 9 different artists. Here's what I've got so far.

See the reason I picked this one up, well it cost next to nowt and as I've said on Comic Art Fans
"Love Arthur Ranson, love Danger Mouse and I'd been looking at a number of pages of the two combined for ages and nothing had quite got me to make the jump. Then I saw this one. Love the fact that unlike so many other examples I'd seen it screamed Arthur Ranson to me, something about the colours, the snowy landscape, the cloudy sky. Not sure what, but it looked like his work. And I fell in love with the mammoth, something so Danger Mouse about it. Large and still, you can almost hear the regional accent it will talk in. Love it. And as ever in real life its breath-taking. Especially when you consider how little I paid for it. Brilliant page."
So yeah no Baron Greenback, no Frogshead Flyer, heck no Danger Car but all that extra Ranson and it had to me mine.So happy with it. Oh and its massive!

This example leads into my WANTS list . . .
I'm currently trying to put-together a KELLY'S EYE serial (from the VALIANT comic-book) that commenced early April 1965.
The story's commonly known as 'The Vampire of Raffino' and ran for 24 episodes (48 pages in total).
Currently I own two-thirds of the story art (32 pages), but am missing 16 originals. I do know the whereabouts of one of the missing pages, but the owner's trying to gouge me - and I'm not playing.
Here's an example page I own (episode 3 page 1). If anyone has any OA pages from this serial they might be prepared to sell or trade, please get in touch . . .

Another story (from the VALIANT) that I'm also trying to piece-together is a STEEL CLAW storyline that also ran from early April 1965. This one ran for 9 episodes (18 pages in total).
Currently, I own 10 of the pages, with another 8 to find.
Here's an example OA page I own (episode 3 page 1). If anyone here has any pages from the storyline they might be prepared to release to me, please get in touch!

Currently, I'm into collecting original movie poster paintings. At the moment I'm at about 21 originals.
Here's one of my favourites . . .
Tom Chantrell's original painting that was used as the basis for the movie poster campaign of the Hammer Horror movie, RASPUTIN, THE MAD MONK (1966). Deemed too risqué as originally painted (rape scene at the bottom of the art), the artwork was revised (censored) for the final poster that would have been displayed in cinemas at the time.
Surviving Hammer originals appear to be thin on the gound, not helped by the fact that Chantrell was known to cannibalize his own art (cutting parts out of single paintings for re-use when the movies got re-issued as double-bill presentations). Luckily, old RASPUTIN managed to escape Chantrell's knife . . .

Mike Zeck did some amazing work on Shang-Chi. A brilliant cover artist.
Yep Mike Zeck is astonishing, one of my all time favourite American artists, alas he's never done much that I've been fussed about. I own his and DeMatteis' Captain America run mainly to have a big chunk of his work. Its good fun and all but lordy its glorious to look at.

Captain Cracking (for a Channel 4 TV series pitch dealing with a history of comics); "Invited by the UKs Channel 4 to submit a pitch for a TV series about comics, we decided to use Captain Cracking as a camp narrative hook. The idea was for Captain Cracking to steer his ship, the Hatter, though pages of classic comics whilst giving us a disjointed history of the medium. Ridgway's pages are all like that as far as I can tell - big and stiff. (Fnar fnar.) Great art - there's a school of thought that calls his Sixth Doctor work the highlight of his career. He certainly loved doing it (whilst Parkhouse was writing, in particular.)

Ridgway's pages are all like that as far as I can tell - big and stiff. (Fnar fnar.) Great art - there's a school of thought that calls his Sixth Doctor work the highlight of his career. He certainly loved doing it (whilst Parkhouse was writing, in particular.)
Yeah setting aside Deadman I can certainly agree with that. The Parkhouse stuff was great but the Morrison stuff doesn't hold up on re-read to me.
I rarely have any new art to show and when I do it's almost always Brendan McCarthy, sorry. Still, here's a couple of recent-ish bits - a pair of unused colour variants of the cover he did for Mr X back in the late 80's*, plus a couple of other pieces (I love that weird crab-train).

* I think these were created by repeatedly using colour Xeroxes; not original art as such but that's the way they were put together back in the day. Brendan just signed and dated them before passing them on.
I do adore those Mr X images. I picked up some collections of Mr X stuff a while and ago and they are steadily working their way to the top of the pile (spreadsheet) I'm really looking forward to reading them as I remember loving the bits I had back in the day. Well loving and being baffled by in equal measure as I recall.

I loved the first series of Mr X as a kid; the follow-up series (not really following on story-wise as far as I remember) was patchy but had its moments - and some great covers. The original run was incredible though - by the sound of it we had a similar experience with it (I had a vague grasp of what was going on but it looked GREAT).
Ohhh man its been too long since we had this thread up and running and boy did it take some tracking down. But here we are and I'm delighted to say I have a couple if new pieces to share.
Firstly from Chris Askham's Kickstarter for his quite brilliant small press title Switchblade Stories a page from issue 3

I adore this page. Its as if its something from The Warriors, which is kinda fitting as my package from Chris also included an Artzine of said cinematic masterpiece which he threw in cos I forgot to order it!
Chris Askham is GREAT!
Second up from Shift Comic's Winter Special Kickstarter (I know, I know it took its time!) a page from Chris Geary's stunningly wonderful Kora.
This page is quite brilliant

So much process stuff you don't see in the final image - its superb, it really is. If you've not read Kora you really should check it out AND he sent me a free head sketch as well! Well I say sketch this is a truly fantastic picture.

Glorious stuff Colin!
Really like the look of Switchblade Stories in B&W
lovely hint of a hernandez bros vibe in that switchblade stories page.
will definitely investigate.
Handily timed with this thread being exhumed I got this back from the framing place this weekend - a John Cooper page from Battle Action Force in 1986.

BAF was my comic of choice back then and it's given me a lifetime love of John Cooper's work - it's all square jawed heroes and bloodless, frenetic violence. There is so much action packed into this single page
It also looks ace in a proper frame: I've just started the process of getting some of the art I own done like this and whilst costly it looks fantastic.
Oh wow Barrington Boots that's brill - LOVE John Cooper and one day i will get a Johnny Red page by him, one day...
Cheers Colin! I'd love a JC Johnny Red page also. I have, however, run out of wall to hang anything else!

Isn't that what house extensions are for?

I have space
Nice one. I'll hang it at your place should I ever get one then!
Great page Barrington.
BAF and Coop - what more could you ever want?
