Title: New Readers Start Here!
Post by: Richmond Clements on 20 September, 2012, 10:48:05 PM
So, as we're getting a rather wonderful influx of new folks, I thought rather than having each of them asking where to start, the good folks of the board could help them out on this thread.
So, apart from Dredd, what to start with?

I would suggest the  Kingdom and the Nemesis volumes to kick this off.

Zombo (it's a laff riot), Shakara and Nikolai Dante.

And I'd like to second everybody else's suggestions.

Hi, I'm new to the forum but not to 2000ad (although I have some catching up to do).
Anyway, my top strips have always been:

Strontium Dog
A.B.C Warriors
Slaine

Anything that stands out in the ten years since was last reading the prog?

Paul.

Try some of those Anderson phonebooks too. She's simply wonderful. And get your teeth into Halo Jones for your first nibble of Alan Moore.

Is Robo-Hunter still around? When was his last visit to the Prog? I seem to remember loving it.

I got the best advice going when I joined at christmas. I am willing to collate it all for a fee. I should add that I have had an absolute ball and I am indebted to everyone who gave me the advice. I am also poor.

IF YOU WANT TO GET A KID HOOKED...
Robusters, Harlem Heroes

What's "Judge Dredd"?
CASEFILE Vol 5 - Future Crime, Judge Death plus the apocalypse war.

IF YOU KNOW DREDD A BIT...
The Pit (sector house procedural),  Brothers of the Blood (all the clone stories), Origins (how the judge system arose), tour of Duty (recent Dredd developments)

IF YOU DON'T CARE FOR DREDD
Brass Sun, stickleback, red seas, Defoe, shakara zombo....  too may thrills to mention.

I would suggest the epic that is Nikolai Dante for new readers as the saga encapsulates everything that makes 2000AD great - an exceptionally well formed cast of characters in a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end and one that has action, comedy, pathos, darkness, light, romance and brilliant writing and art throughout.

I would also recommend Dafoe because it is probably one of the few zombies story in recent years that has done anything particularly new and anything that has Marty Feldman cast is a winner in my book.

If you like exciting takes on zombie stories then Zombo is one of the other stories that does something exciting and interesting.

If you can track it down then Zenith is as good a superhero story as you will ever read.

Hi All, it's great to find a place for Dredd Heads! I first picked up a 2000ad prog back in 1989, i remember it had a cracking cover with Dredd looking more grumpy than usual holding a pair of explosive Y fronts, anyone remember that issue? I was hooked from then on, i loved Necropolis and judgment Day. I have fond memories of Strontium dog, Nemesis, and Durham Red from the early 90's.
I'm sad to say i stopped reading after the Stallone debacle. I got back into comics after reading the Scarlet Traces books and am now a happy 2000ad reader again after buying prog 1798 on a whim. My only regret is missing out on Dredd's day of Chaos stuff. Gutted!

Hey everyone!
Apparently this is the place to say hi.  So I'm doing it.  A few of you are on IMDB, it would seem.
I was led here by Samson_k.

So, yeah.  As for Dredd, I only have a couple issues/progs.  I need to start ordering the Collected Case Files and Restricted Files.  Apparently none of my local comicbook shops carry 2000 AD.
I've been told to get - "Origins", "America", "Democracy"/"Democracy Now", the "Dead Man" stories, all the Judge Death stuff.  Also, all the Anderson/Psi Division stuff.

And as for non-Dredd:
I'm looking to get into -
Rogue Trooper, Strontium Dog and ABC Warriors, Ace Trucking Co, Babe Race 2000, and now, all the stories you mentioned.

Glad to be around so many Dredd-Heads.

AlpineNewt: ten years away means youve missed Clint Langley on both Slaine and ABC Warriors. Thankfully, most of it is now available in gorgeous hardbacks (and yes, you do want them in hardback, as the paperback versions are slow arriving)- immediatlely buy yourself:

SLAINE: BOOKS OF INVASIONS Vols 1-3

SLAINE: THE WANDERER

ABC WARRIORS: THE VOLGAN WAR Vols 1-4

You also need to pick up the new adventures of STRONTIUM DOG- starting with THE KREELER CONSPIRACY.

Just got the latest Megazine here in Canada. Loves the Pack story and the Hondo-City stories. I've picked up some case files and masters books as well. Loved the movie. Long time fan, now as an adult I can find all the Dredd to read I can handle.

Just a question about posts.

How long before a newbie can post on the main forums? Is it a matter of time, or depending on post numbers? Because its a little frustrating not being to share in some of the discussion! Especially to post my reviews of The Meg or Progs.

I'm sorry, I know you've probably answered this before but I cannot find it!

Hi Guys,
I've been a reader on this site for a while,  and have now decided to join in ...

I'm a long time 2000AD fan, which has led me into other Comics, Graphic Novels then Figures and original artwork... It's a slippery slope once you start ( and it just seems to get slippier !!)..

The reason I've decided to put up a post, other than introducing myself,  is just to say thanks to those people who discussed the Mongrol figure from 3A in one of the other forums......It kind of caught my eye, and I was amazed that I had missed this figure when it came out originally.....I know it had a kind of limited release but it completely passed me by.  Then when I saw the photos of it on here...Wow !!....... Long story short, my wallet is now considerably lighter, but I now have a ThreeA 1/6 scale 'original' coloured Mongrol sitting on my desk !!...Awesome.!!...Anyone involved in the production side of this must be commended,  as it's a work of art in itself...Just wonderful.  A truly fabulous creation and I now can't wait for Hammerstein.   Big thanks to you guys on the forum, and of course to Ash and all his Team...

My collecting side started when I visited my brother who stayed outside London in the 80's,  and we went to a Comic shop in Covent Garden which just happened to be selling some artwork.  This included 2 pages of Devlin Waugh by Sean Phillips from the 'Swimming in Blood' storyline that I saw in 2000AD.    Well, the old credit card got hammered that day to the sum of £300 for 2 full colour interior published pages, and I've never looked back...Well, I have I suppose ( driving etc ), but I have never regretted it....
Sean Phillips, in my opinion is just an amazing artist.  I met him at Thoughtbubble in Leeds in 2012 and he was a great guy to meet, chat to and was so friendly...He ended up doing a Devlin Waugh sketch for me ( in about 5 minutes----amazing ), chatted away and was really friendly...Meeting him, John McCrea ( Hitman, The Boys etc ) and Marc Waid really made my weekend there....And don't get me started on the costumes...Some absolutely fabulous costumes, some pretty crap ones as well though, but the majority were great...What a fabulous experience....Highly recommended to everyone..
And I got my photo taken getting arrested by two Judges..There to promote the Judge Minty film.....
I would include some photos but I'm still a newbie,
but thanks anyway..
Cheers,
Bob

I think the best place to start Strontium Dog is Agency File 2 (or Vol 2); there's some classic stories in there, and you also get 'protrait of a mutant' where we learn about Johnny Alpha's childhood and how he came to be a Strontium Dog. It's a really fun read and serves as a great introduction to the character aswell.

As for Judge Dredd, Case Files 1 is fun, but it's Case Files 2 where we slowly start to get to the real Dredd via two of the best Dredd arcs i've had the pleasure of reading; The Cursed Earth and The Day The Law Died. And definitely Case Files 4; with the awesome Judge Child Quest, and our first intro to fan favourite, Chopper. But Case File 5 is when Dredd really kicks into gear via The Block Wars, Judge Death Lives and The Apocolaypse War.

As for the smaller collection or self contained TPB's; there is nothing more greater than America;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1905437587/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1364242255&sr=8-1&pi=SL75

I also loved The Pit, Mandroid and Origins.

So these just some of the must read titles you should check out. Hope that helps.

By the way, welcome to the forum!

No problem!

There was a thread on here somewhere and most agreed that the 2nd volume was a great starting point as any for a new reader. When i first started out on SD, i read File 2 first and learnt everything about the character in one go. And definitely check out America, not only is it considered the best Judge Dredd story, but it's also a stunning piece of work in its own right. Colin MacNeil's artwork is absolutely beautiful to behold, and John Wagner's storytelling grabs you from the opening page and yanks your heart out by the end!

Hi everyone

I feel I know a few of you as I have been lurking for some time, but have only gotten brave enough to join in now.  :D

I am busy catching up on the last ten years progs which I bought recently, Slaine absolutely blew me away, and I am fast becoming a big fan of Nikolai Dante. So far though JD Origins must be the high point of the last few years.

I can't believe Fiends of the Eastern Front didn't get on anyone's list. Probably teaching you all to suck eggs, but would strongly recommend Dave Bishops Fiends of the Eastern Front trilogy, and his follow up Fiends of the Rising Sun.

Missionary Man is another of my top ten, and am still hoping John Wagner rethinks retiring him.

On and off I have been reading from the start. I bought prog 1 at our local newsagent, heavily influenced by the freebie (which our dog subsequently destroyed), and was hooked from then on.

Due to financial constraints placed on me by the ex-wife and the evil Child Support Agency, I lapsed in 1999, but still kept up with a few graphic novels when I could afford.

After I heard rumours of the new film, I went into the loft and brought down all my old progs to get a refresher course, and decided it was about time I caught up with the missing years. After much negociation with the new wife, I justified a fairly substantial spend on the entire run of progs from one of the contributors on here and have been like a pig in poo ever since.

Can't decide between the Cursed Earth, Judge Child Quest, and Necropolis.
Also impressed with Origins.
Have been trying to catch up on 10 years recently, so have skimmed through lots which I will go back over when I get a chance.
Last week I tried Stickleback, after seeing it being plugged by someone on here, and have been fairly impressed, although I have to read a story a few times to really get into it.
One story which should have died gracefully but seems to being dragged out is the latest incarnation of Invasion with Bill Savage, I was never too impressed with the original, Disaster 1990 was a disaster, and the latest offerings just don't do it for me.
Are you just reading Dredd, or are you trying a bit of everything ? One of my all time favorites is the Missionary Man, a character from Dredd world, who is a Marshall in the Cursed Earth near Texas City. Once you have read a few more of the case files, get a copy of Bad Moon Rising, my favorite ever graphic novel. Also 2 novels you can get for 99p on ebay which flesh out the Cursed Earth are Silencer and Cursed Earth Asylum.

Hi smilersaltash,

Like yourself, i'm an older fan who drifted away but was recently inspired by the new movie to return to the house of tharg!

Also, I have big respect for you mentioning Necropolis - that is my favourite Dredd 'epic' and is personally what I would want them to make a film of.

Several people have been telling me that the recent Chaos War was very good so I am planning to pick up the TPBs for that - the first one is out now and the second later this year!! In fact, I was stood in the shop the other day with the Day of Chaos book in one hand and the Batman/Dredd Collection in the other - Batman won that time but Chaos will be next!!

Title: Re: New Readers Start Here!
Post by: smilersaltash on 08 April, 2013, 11:43:15 PM
What I really enjoyed about Necropolis was all the different threads coming together. It's a little different when you can pick up a graphic novel or a load of back issues, rather than picking it up week by week.
I must have been a little slow on the uptake at the time because the whole Dead Man penny didn't drop for me until fairly late on.
If you haven't read it yet, get hold of Origins. Really good old style Dredd feel to the story.
Title: Re: New Readers Start Here!
Post by: Recrewt on 09 April, 2013, 03:00:16 PM
I agree, all the different prologues and epilogues definitely enhanced it.  Dead man was indeed a big shock (I didn't see it coming) - and this was only the starter before the main story.  Reading week by week is the best way as it forces you to wait inbetween - I think all over Necropolis took the best part of a year, which also enhanced the 'epic' feel.   The other thing I liked is that it seemed to have a lasting impact on the MC1 landscape which some of the others didn't.

I've recently read Robusters and I'm starting to read the Complete Bad Company. Both are really good. Robusters isn't as good as Judge Dredd but I think BC might be slightly better...

Hi just joined but been reading since issue 1 ,will 2000ad ever do a compendium version of the complete 2000ad early stories similar to the DC Showcase books and a Starlord one as well? ,as there are so many stories from both comics that seem to have been forgotten while every Dredd story( except theJolly green giant macdonalds epic) seem to have been published several times in every format .great to hear Zenith will be released at last , hopefully (although not 2000ad) Marvelman will out soon too.

Hi all, big Dredd fan, got/read most 80's/90's comics, lost track a bit 2000's, but that's gonna change because this site has renewed my enthusiasm for it, primarily joined to find the petition to make the sequel to Dredd, or anyway I can lend my support to it, because I think Karl Urban needs to portray Dredd more, a lot more IMO, and the actress who played Anderson should get her own film, or atleast be in the sequel, anyway if anyone can point me to that, that would be great, thanks everyone(anyone).

Also, if anyone has the time, could they explain to me any new developments in Dredd's comic book life, I am going to dive in and find all the back issues I can, 2000 onwards, and start reading them again, I have read the eagles and the fleetways to death, I read that he had a disease or something and that his age has really caught up with him quite recently, thanks everyone(anyone).

Let's see...

A second robot war (not sure if that was post 2000 or not)

Serial Killer PJ Maybe has been eluding Dredd off and on for the past decade.

There was an Origins storyline which explored the backstory of the Judges rise to power, and also led to mutants being given more rights, and internal struggles within Justice Department.

You've also got Day of Chaos, with repercussions from the Apocalypse War with devastating consequences for Mega City One.

Dredd is 70ish now, has had treatment for cancer, been near death a few more times.

His age is brought up, but there's also the 70 is the new 50 thing of 'future science'

IIRC it was mentioned in passing during his routine medical, and dealt with in just a couple of panels.

It's a fleeting moment in the Tour of Duty book - intended to emphasise Jura's suicide by cancer, given the medical developments of the day - and Dredd shakes it off like it's nothing. It was a biopsy. Tumour was ... uncooperative.

The Complete Alan Moore Future Shocks is just an absolute master class. Sums up 2000AD for me. Stand outs are "The Last Rumble of the Platinum Horde" and "The English/Phlondrutian Phrasebook".

Some fantastic art in there as well.

Hi

I hope this is the right place to start. I've jsut signed up. I'm mainly interested in original art right now. I've bought a few nice pages over the years and stayed interested though I've been reading fewer and fewer comics as time has gone by. I still re-read all my old progs regularly, though, and pick up the odd collection from time to time.

I re-read all of Zenith recently and was surprised again at how great it was. I'm going back through the original Rogue Trooper next!

Hi there and welcome. Us obsessive types who spend silly money on pieces of paper have quite a thread for you to peruse, though I expect you've already had a look:

http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,28546.0/ (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,28546.0/)

If you've got a CAF site or scans of your original art, feel free to stick 'em up, as the locals like nothing better than leering over / coveting / appreciating other people's collections. (Delete as appropriate.)

HI being Dredd readers I am wondering does anyone know how to value some Ron Smith art I am trying to sell? I have three vintage pages from 1978, one with a certificate and a Steve Sampson Judge Anderson, with a certificate. I really need to raise some money so any reasonable offers would be welcome.

Lapsed in the 90s but still keep a big stack from about 78 to 92, have recently been abusing amazon for a plethora of graphic novels etc, and as a kid I would have loved to see myself in the 21st century as a 41 yr old on an interactive forum on the "information superhighway" I was lucky to see the golden age of bolland mcmahon et al and then fabry, bisley, hicklenton etc, I even still have all 7 revolver comics and a few issues of crisis, out of touch with the modern 2000ad but am finding my way back into it, im glad I lived to see a decent dredd film! I spent many hours in the 80s drawing posters for one!

Hello fellow Earthlets, Have just recently got into 2000AD due to the 40th Birthday celebrations. I was totally stunned by the artwork and writing throughout and so have begun ordering back issues of 2000AD and The Judge Dredd Megazine. Honestly believe now that 2000AD is the greatest comic in the galaxy. Have also got a massive thrill from book 21 of the Judge Dredd case files - very, very impressive. Very interested in Scarlet Traces: Cold War 2 [new story] which I read the first part of today...amazing idea for a story I thought...

I may be wrong but I think the correct protocol is to commit to sacrificing your first born child, donating 90% of your worldly goods and pledging to being Molcher's indentured servant for the next millennium.

Although I hear that if you offer him a nice pack of choccy biccies he may give you a pass on the first born child and settle for the third offspring instead.

Hi all, I am new to 2000ad and the boards, having picked up my first prog, 2121, a few weeks ago. I've never really read much comics but have always been a fan of sci-fi short stories, and as my new work has a newsagents that sells 2000ad it seemed a good time to start reading. Really enjoying it so far, especially Dan Abnett's work (with great art in both 2000ad and Megazine). Like other's have said though I don't seem to be able to post in the spoilers sections.

One waits patiently for a moderator to notice, I suppose.
When I joined, not knowing any of this, I think I went crying to whoever was on the other end of the Help menu that day and I held my breath until he sorted me out.

Anyway, welcome to forum, David. It's the sort of party where you think you'll only stay for one or two drinks, but then you wake up in a skip a few days later without your wallet or your trousers.
