As like last year we have decided to combine the early gathering of 2016 with the LSCC, so more people will be there and we can have another good evening at The Fox.

After a hard days sketch or signature collecting, or patrolling in various attire or just chatting to creators at the event, this is a great way to unwind and relax.

There is a facebook page with this event on there but I'll be reminding people on here as the date draws closer.

It's on Saturday 20th Feb at The Fox, which is outside the main entrance to the Excel and the gathering will start around 17:00, with the con goers arriving once they are changed.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Film & TV / Van Helsing series heading to SyFy
04 November, 2015, 07:17:10 PM
It looks like this could be fun, seeing the team behind Fargo and Hell on Wheels are behind it

QuoteA new series based on Dracula's nemesis Abraham Van Helsing is headed to Syfy. The 13-episode season, titled Van Helsing, plans to put a new spin on the beloved vampire hunter's story, by skipping over him and placing his daughter Vanessa Helsing at the centre of the show.

According to THR the story picks up with Vanessa resurrected five years into the future, only to discover the world is overrun by vampires. With her unique power over the bloodthirsty creatures she is "humanity's last hope" to reclaim the planet from their immortal clutches. Dramatic sounding stuff.

Nomadic Pictures, the production outfit behind Fargo and Hell On Wheels, are producing the effort with Neil LaBute attached as writer, showrunner and executive producer. And by the sounds of LaBute's comments, we're in store for some mythology-shattering vamp action.

"I am extremely excited to be working with Syfy and Nomadic Pictures to create a unique, character-driven action series that will move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories" he revealed in a press statement. "This is a wonderful chance for us to forge great stories and unforgettable characters and throw them into a world where the stakes – both dramatic and personal – are tremendously high." Van Helsing kicks off production early 2016 in Vancouver, with a premiere expected sometime in fall 2016.

And here's the quote from the Hollywood Reporter THR

QuoteThe new series will center on Vanessa Helsing, who is resurrected five years in the future and learns vampires have taken over the world.
Syfy is pulling from the book of Dracula for its latest series.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has acquired Van Helsing to series with writer Neil LaBute set as showrunner, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Originally introduced as Professor Abraham van Helsing in the 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula, the character is best known as a vampire hunter, monster hunter and arch nemesis of Count Dracula.

In this new interpretation, the central character is now a female, Vanessa Helsing, the next in a lineage of warriors who must lead mankind against a world controlled by vampires. When Vanessa is resurrected five years in the future, she learns vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is essentially humanity's last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.

LaBute will exec produce with Simon Barry, Evan Tyler, Dave Brown, Daniel March and Chad Oakes and Mike Frisley for Nomadic Pictures (Fargo). Nomadic Pictures will produce the series and distribute it within the U.S. Dynamic Television will handle international distribution.

"I am extremely excited to be working with Syfy and Nomadic Pictures to create a unique, character-driven action series that will move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories" LaBute said in a statement. "This is a wonderful chance for us to forge great stories and unforgettable characters and throw them into a world where the stakes – both dramatic and personal – are tremendously high."

Production on the 13-episode first season will begin in January in Vancouver for a fall 2016 launch

"Van Helsing represents a new mythology in sci-fi by challenging traditional vampire rules," said Oakes, co-chairman of Nomadic Pictures." The series is unique in exploring a world completely dominated by vampires, while the human characters have to learn the importance of working together to ensure their survival. Mike and I are thrilled to team up once again with the talented Neil LaBute to deliver an amazing series."

The pickup comes in the midst of a rebranding for Syfy, which is hoping to turns its focus back to genre fare with upcoming projects like Childhood's End and The Expanse. The network recently canceled Defiance, Dominion and Haven.

"Van Helsing reimagines a classic story in a compelling new way, featuring a bold and complex heroine", said Chris Regina, Syfy's senior vp program strategy. "This high octane acquired original series will be a terrific addition to our lineup next year."

Van Helsing was most recently adapted for the big screen in 2004. The film, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, grossed more than $300 million worldwide. David Warner (Titanic) portrayed Van Helsing on the Showtime series Penny Dreadful for two episodes in 2014.

LaBute, whose credits include Full Circle, Death at a Funeral and Lakeview Terrace, is repped by Gersh and Gendler & Kelly.

And it's a female lead :)

It's coming up to that most special time of the year again, so why not meet up with like minded folk, buy 2000 AD stuff and then go for a few pints and some grub, in that big city of London.

This time it's Saturday 19th December

If you don't know the drills, it's very easy. We all meet up at Forbidden Planet on Shaftesbury Avenue between 12:00 - 13:00 and then wander down Neal Street (opposite the shop) and into The Crown and Anchor, which is on the left and is a corner building.

Last time we did a short pub crawl that took in some pubs with very loose connections to 2000 AD!

There is no obligation to stay to the end, or even make it in time for the shop. If you want to come along then any time will do. All are welcome, so don't be shy, just say hello and join in.

We do have a facebook page, (link below) which you can join, if you like to keep up with things but we do post on here during the day, if we remember ;)

2000 AD Southern Contingent Gathering

As always, new faces are more than welcome, as it's always good to put a face to a name and have a laugh about everything over a pint or two.

News / Mezco Dredd NYCC exclusive figure
16 September, 2015, 03:53:03 PM
The New York Comic Con exclusive Dredd figure by Mezco is available to buy from their site for a very limited time (probably less than a day), which is a brilliant idea as it helps to stop the scalpers.

A word of warning, if you live outside the US, best get someone who lives there to get it for you, as the postal system they use is rather annoying and that's putting it mildly.

Film & TV / Supergirl - TV series
09 May, 2015, 05:18:19 AM
Supergirl is coming to CBS later this year, which adds another series to the ever expanding DC universe on the box.

QuoteVariety reports that CBS has picked up the drama as part of its 2015-2016 season. Starring Whiplash's Melissa Benoist as Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El (known as Kara Danvers to humanity), the show comes from executive producer Greg Berlanti. If you're familiar with many of the DC shows on television right now, Berlanti's name is going to sound pretty familiar; he's also one of the creative forces between Arrow and The Flash.

The pilot for the series reportedly cost $14 million, with the show itself meeting up with Supergirl at the age of 24 when she decides to stop hiding her Kryptonian powers and don the mantle of a superhero. Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) also stars as Kara's boss Cat Grant, with Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olson and David Harewood as the villain Hank Henshaw. According to Variety, there's also going to be some familiar faces from the past in the mix as well, with Lois & Clark's Dean Cain and Helen Slater — who played Supergirl in the 1984 feature film — also cast.

Film & TV / Legends Of Tomorrow - DC TV series
09 May, 2015, 04:30:25 AM
It seems that the DC Universe is pushing ahead rather quickly with it's Arrow/Flash spin off series Legends of Tomorrow, as they've confirmed a full series!

QuoteThe CW's expanding universe of DC characters is only getting bigger. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the network has picked up Legends of Tomorrow, a spinoff of successful series Arrow and The Flash. The show, starring Superman Returns lead Brandon Routh as the Atom, is a superhero team-up series that pulls its cast from both DC efforts. Routh will team up with a motley crew of heroes and villains, including Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave and Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold, to stop a seemingly unstoppable threat.

And here's the series synopsis...

Quote"When heroes alone are not enough... the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat – one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?"
