Paccar Theatre, Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin 2
Thursday, November 1, 2012, 18:00-19:00. Admission free - registration required!

Does sci-fi influence the direction of scientific research? How do sci-fi writers draw inspiration from real science? What happens when the two professions come together to work on a project?

In a free event at Science Gallery, an expert panel - including a scientist, a science fiction writer, and an expert on the relationship between the two - discuss the relationship between sci-fi and science.

If you're interested in the interplay between science fiction and reality, join writer Michael Carroll (2000AD, Judge Dredd), DCU's Pat Brereton (Hollywood Utopia, Smart Cinema), and Head of Zoology at TCD, Nicola Marples to find out how important scientific accuracy is in science fiction, and how much of an impact science fiction can have on scientific research, public opinion, and even funding decisions.

For more information, see the Science Gallery website!

Books & Comics / Stronger: A Super Human Clash
07 June, 2012, 05:57:02 PM

Once again, it's Shameless Self-Promotion time!

My new book Stronger will be published next week in the USA. It's the sixth novel in the Quantum Prophecy / New Heroes series. It's also the third of the prequels, but it's been written to work as a stand-alone tale so if you haven't read the others yet, don't feel shy about buying this one. In fact, just buy the others at the same time.

While you're waiting, you can pass the time (or at least one minute and thirty-nine seconds of it) watching my new video trailer for the book on YouTube! (Don't forget to click "Like" and add it to your favourites!)

Splundig vur Thrigg,
Mike

Film & TV / Vote for Victory!
13 February, 2012, 12:13:48 PM
Irish filmmaker John Vaughan (big-time 2000AD fan and occasionally of this parish!) has an entry in this year's Storyland competition on Ireland's national TV station RTE.

Check out the first episode of Victory? here and log in to give him your vote! (Voting's a bit wonky right now if you don't have Internet Explorer or Chrome, but please give it a shot anyway!).

And check out the official Victory? website!

Off Topic / 10 years on this site!
26 October, 2011, 11:33:35 PM
Almost missed this... I've now been a proud and only sometimes confused member of this here website for ten whole years!

I feel that I should probably mark the occasion by saying something intelligent or meaningful, but nothing comes to mind. Except, of course, that one piece of ancient wisdom that guides all right-thinking people: "Please buy my books."

Love 'n' cuddles,
Mike

Books & Comics / The Ascension
30 June, 2011, 11:46:18 AM

Yes, it's shameless self-promotion time again!

My new book - The Ascension - is published today in the USA! It's the fifth book in the Quantum Prophecy /  New Heroes series, and second of the prequels.

If you like your adventures utterly brilliant and compelling, then this book is for you! (Please note that there is actually a world-wide shortage of my books, so customers are asked to limit themselves to five copies each to reduce the risk of panic-buying.)

For lots more info on The Ascension and the other equally brilliant books in the series, see my fine website!

Plans are afoot in the Carroll household to attend this year's SDCC! Anyone else here hoping to make it? It looks like it'll be a pretty good one, with some top 2000AD folks already in the Special Guests list: Alan Davis, Dave Gibbons, John Higgins and Grant Morrison.

Film & TV / Sherlock Holmes 2
27 September, 2010, 02:36:49 PM
According to Dark Horizons, the part of Sherlock's brother Mycroft will be played by none other than Stephen Fry. I loved the first movie but this news has just raised the bar by several million levels!

Now, if that doesn't get you excited for the movie (and it should!), the official word is the Moriarty has yet to be cast... But there seems to be a strong undercurrent of rumours that the role of Holmes's greatest nemesis will be offered to Mr. Fry's old chum Hugh Laurie. Fry, Downey Jr. and Laurie all in the one movie - how cool would that be?! Perhaps if we all wish very hard, it will come true!

Events / YA Fiction writing course, Dublin, Sep. 2010
08 September, 2010, 03:48:58 PM
For those interested in such things, I'll be teaching a ten-week course on writing Young Adult fiction in the Irish Writers' Centre, Dublin, starting September 21st 2010.

For more information, see the Irish Writers' Centre's website:

If this floats your boat and / or rings your bell, then please sign up! It'll be a blast! If, however, this news leaves your bell silent and your boat land-locked, please pass it on to everyone anyway - there's bound to be someone you know who's itching to write a YA novel but just doesn't know where to begin...
