Help! / Gibbons' Dredd.
28 April, 2004, 09:15:01 PM
Starring at the latest prog on my desk a thought occurred to me about the cover artist.

Has Dave Gibbons every actually drawn Dredd as a strip in 2000ad?

I've been getting 2000ad since very early on, and also slavishly went through all the old Quality reprints, yet no episode springs to mind.

On the same note is there any artist of worth that 2000ad has nurtured who has managed to move on to pastures new without giving old Stoney-face a go?

My memory says not, but I?d love to know.

General / 10th Planet or not?
15 March, 2004, 03:01:49 PM
One moment it's a planet, the next it's not big enough to be a planet and now it is a planet and it's called Sedna - after an Inuit goddess IIRC.

So does this mess up horoscopes or what?

General / Great Movie Trailers
17 February, 2004, 06:58:26 PM
Don't know if this will get a response 'cos it's probably harder to think of any, but a few have stuck in my mind.

The first Kill Bill trailer (...Proudly presents the 4th film from Quentin...etc) really sold that movie to me - though i was very underwhelmed by the actual film but the trailer had got me to part with my cash.

Another is the original Spiderman trailer; the Twin Towers one. Now i wanted to see Spiderman but after that trailer i REALLY wanted to see Spiderman.

Anyone got any others? Especially if the film they promoted wasn't much cop 'cos that shows a good trailer.

A little bird has told me that there's a Rogue Trooper computer game in the works.

Anyone got any more info?

What do folks think? I haven't played the Dredd one 'cos I thought it looked awful (note: not played awful)

And if they are doing one; Which Rogue? 'cos a blue guy just in shorts might seem a little odd in this age of mech suits and body armour.

General / Ultimate Dredd
23 January, 2004, 04:49:47 PM
Wandering home, laden with shopping, last night I started thinking about Marvel?s Ultimate line and then what if the same principle was applied to Dredd. Update the character?s world to include all the things that weren?t a consideration or didn?t exist when he was first conceived.

Identity and security issues - wouldn?t all the citizens be tagged to make sure they could be identified? Remember it?s not a democracy by a long shot.

Internet - would any of the citizens even be on the streets ? cyberspace can only get more all involving over the next hundred years.

Globalisation or big business - would the rich upper class truly live in a separate world high up in the clouds with the workers toiling below?

Global warming - would the Cursed Earth be formed by climate change rather than a nuclear war now that the Cold war is (officially) over? (Was that in The Movie?)

The human body - what performance enhancing drugs would a judge routinely take? Or what enhancements would they have built into their bodies? Would they all be clones in the mould of Rogue or the synthetics from BladeRunner - superb at their jobs, but ultimately very replaceable.

Or is Dredd?s world something people think could be the future?

I?m not asking for Dredd to change ? I love the stony-faced old git and this isn?t in anyway a dig at the current Dredd continuity  ? I just got thinking and wondered what other long-term fans would think or come up with for an imaginary project.

Ps If this kind of thread has gone on before I apologise and expect no ideas or opinions.

General / Prog 1371 The cover!
07 January, 2004, 03:15:21 PM
Got it on my desk, fresh from WHSmith, but won't be reading it until i clock-off.

It's the cover that strikes me! What a weird, made-up-o fight position, is Dredd being jumped from behind?; reminds me of some of the more extreme fantasy art I've endured over the years.

Either way the Stig-of-the-dump guy has won 'cos Dredd's neck is snapped like a good un.

Help! / Give a man hope...
05 January, 2004, 06:16:08 PM
Having spent the Xmas holiday reducing down my Comic collection to a more manageable/movable size for the third year in a row; I have to beg the question who on this board still collects comics? I know you all read them, but who still lovingly collects all that they purchase?

I?m not looking to stand in judgement of those who do; I?ve just become so disillusioned with anything published of late that I had an epiphany and stopped. In fact without my rose-tinted glasses on a lot of what I?ve collected over the years has come up wanting and been binned/burned/given to a gleeful uninformed nephew (trying to sell them was a joke in itself).

Is this a stage that all collectors go through? Is it a sign of a sudden late maturing? (Far too late) Just fall out from the awful recent Tooth offensive? Me being a grumpy old git who harkens back to the glory days before multiple covers and stretched out storylines or am I just not seeing the gems that are out there?

Enlighten a man, please.

Other Reviews / LOTR: Return of the King
18 December, 2003, 03:48:48 PM
Went and saw it yesterday.

Staggering. A visual feast that does do what the hype says and surpasses the other two.

But I'm a biased LOTR fan viewing it with rose-tinted glasses, what do other boarders think?

General / Oh my individuality is in peril!
08 December, 2003, 11:40:24 PM
Having just tried to change my name from tulkas to Tulkas I discovered that i already existed. Damn lower-case!

Well to preserve my limited individuality I've changed my name to Thermos. Why? Surprisingly it was the least idiotic of my options.

Not that it matters really 'cos I'm new to the board but i thought I'd clarify that i am nothing to do with this earlier Tulkas just in case he was a bit of a Keane.

Any news on when this is actually coming out?

Sorry if it's mentioned elsewhere on this site - please just point me in the right direction.

I think I'll use this opportunity to ask why the classic hardback collections are published in such grime packaging?

I planned on grabbing the new Halo hardback at Winterfest, but was put off by its depressing black look. Halo Jones wasn't a story in need of such a cover. The earlier editions definitely summed up the contents better. (Also Glossy black dustcovers - that's just a magnet for greasy finger marks)
