Title: The Megazine Rebellion Years Top 10 Series - Tournament
Post by: broodblik on 01 July, 2020, 04:34:26 AM
You can now vote for your favourite thrills in the Meg during the Rebellion era (and hopefully to be continued for many, many more years).

How does it work?

1.   You select your top 10 series during the Rebellion Years. This is from Meg 3.61 publish on 1 January 2000 up until Meg 421 publish on 16 June 2020.

2.   Judge Dredd is not included but the Dredd movie series is included. The movie version I see as an alternative and not part of the Dredd-verse canon.

3.   Any reprints and that includes the floppies are not included. Series like Tank Girl are included for example.

4.   We again work with the same point system that was employed for the "The Rebellion Years Top 10 Series" tournament.

1 = 25 points
2 = 18 points
3 = 15 points
4 = 12 points
5 = 10 points
6 = 8 points
7 = 6 points
8 = 4 points
9 = 2 points
10 = 1 point

5.   You can vote as many times as you want but only the last vote counts.

How long will the tourney last?

You can cast your vote up until Sunday 12th of July

Applying my previous rules is extra hard in the Megazine! But here's me limiting myself to one strip per creator (with one exception), and no strips that started before the Rebellion years (roughly Meg 3.64, I think? At least, this is when Preacher reprints gave way to Strontium Dog reprints!).

1. Lawless (Abnett/Winslade)
2. Storm Warning (Moore+Reppion/Foster + Broxton)
3. Lilly McKenzie (Fraser)
4. Cursed Earth Koburn (Rennie + McConville / Ezquerra)
5. Numbercruncher (Spurrier/Holden)
6. Tales from the Black Museum (basically everyone has had a go at these, almost all excellent!)
7. Strange & Darke (Smith / McNeil)
8. Dredd (Wyatt+ DeCampi / Willsher + Flint + Davidson)
9. Dark Judges (Wagner + Hine / Percival)
10. Black Siddha (Mills + Davis)

so yeah, no room for Insurrection or any Devlin Waugh, and tough choice not to sling Angelic on there. I'm counting the recent Dark Judge stuff as new and different enough, but feel free to call me out on this cheat!

Black Siddha? Wasn't that just reprint?

It was reprinted but the story ran as below:

Black Siddha (by Pat Mills and Simon Davis):
"Bad Karma" (in Judge Dredd Megazine #202-208, 2003)
"Kali Yuga" (in Judge Dredd Megazine #218-223, 2004)
"Return of the Jester" (in Judge Dredd Megazine #245-252, 2006)

I've left things like Armitage out because it'd take me to long to untangle which stories were pre- and post-Reb - same applies to Tank Girl - without digging them all out I wouldn't know where the line between reprinted from elsewhere and originally printed in the Meg is.

This is hard. But in the opposite way that the Prog poll was. In that it was a shame to leave stuff out. Sad to say with this one, beyond a clear top 3, which would probably be my overall Megazine top 3, I'm struggling to justify what to include.

1. Lawless
2. The Simping Detective
3. Insurrection
4. The Bendatti Vendetta
5. Cursed Earth Kobain
6. Demarco
7. HAVN
8. The Dark Judges
9. The Streets of Dan Francisco
10.The Scarlett Apocrypha

It was also altered / redrawn in parts from what I can remember - something to do with copyright of one of the characters (maybe it's a lobo thing?).

This was as difficult as I thought it would be as, despite reading the Meg since #1 (vol 1), most times it's been out of a "sense of duty" rather than pure enjoyment. I dont think they've ever got it right- and while the Rebellion years have been a massive improvement on what went before, it's still the prog's poorer cousin, at least to me.

Anyway, here's my top ten in order.

1) Lawless
2) Insurrection
3) The Streets of Dan Francisco
4) Devlin Waugh
5) The Dark Judges - (Dominion/Torture Garden)
6) Lilly Mackenzie
7) American Reaper
8) Cursed Earth Coburn
9) Storm Warning
10) Demarco

As an aside, where was American Reaper in that original first post on this thread? Am I just being blind?

I too thought it was missing but saw The Reaper Files. One Google search later and this seems to be a recognized title for the (in)complete series.

I really wish this strip had been given another series. It was a new and interesting premise by Pat Mills and an eye-pleasing treat courtesy of Clint Langley.

Cheers

I'm kinda with Kev on this one. Reaper Files isn't really a separate series IMO. It's just an extension to the main series. Similarly when you come to the main Prog vote, how are you going to handle Downlode Tales? To me it's not separate to Sinister Dexter and is an inherent part of the Sinister Dexter story. It was only called Downlode Tales to maintain the pretence that the boys had gone their separate ways.

Do anyone know how the numbering worked on the original Megs ?

Starts off simple: issues 1-20

Then it got renamed as Volume 2, starting from issue 1 again. (Because it moved from monthly to fortnightly)
Barney lists these as 2.01-2.83...

when it got rebooted again as Volume 3, starting at 1 again (Because they were hoping to get new readers with an Issue 1 who'd just seen and fallen in love with the 1995 movie)
on Barney as 3.01-3.79...

when it got rebooted again as Volume 4 (Harder to explain exactly why, but this was about a year into the Rebellion era, and basically this is the point when the Meg got really good again).

On Barney as 4.01-4.18

...and finally starts with the original numbering again with issue 200.

(oh and for the record I only omitted Insurrection because I didn't want to double-up on Dabnett. My own rules just for fun!)

I actually am fine with the Reaper Files as part of American Reaper so if we have a vote for Reaper File it will be credited against American Reaper.

Thanks for this  :thumbsup:

Just one minor correction. Meg 4.18 is the 200th issue. The re-numbering started with issue #201.

Faster than Usain Bolt out of the blocks to another world record we have one thrill that is setting a blistering pace. The fairy tale about the tortoise and the hare will stay a fairy tale nothing is gonna catch this trailblazer.

So, after the first week of voting we have 44 thrills receiving votes. The top two positions I believe is almost done and dusted.  A five-way battle will determine whom takes number 3.

Remember vote as many times as you want but only the last vote counts. Voting close next Sunday the 12th of July.
