Off Topic / Taking The Long Walk
« on: 27 March, 2002, 09:58:26 PM »
Dear all,

Today is the second sunny day in a row. Without a laptop, being online and being in the garden are two things I can't do simultaneously.

So it's decision time.

I've enjoyed the threads here but life's too short so I'm taking the long walk (down the garden path).
Thanks for all your posts, I hope to see some of you at Comics 2002 or Dreddcon 2002. Have fun!

Prog / Ban this Atavar SMUT!
« on: 05 March, 2002, 04:55:44 PM »
Dear Tharg,

I was APPALLED to see so many dirty pictures in this week's prog. The immodestly dressed female in Judge Dredd was bad enough, but Atavar was simply too much. The protaganist is an onanist!

I never believed the Galaxy's Greatest Comic could stoop so low. From the very first page we are forced to witness a naked man engaged in blatant self-abuse. Is this really what you mean by "New Thrill"?

I can't believe there is enough mileage in this depravity for a whole series, so explain yourself Tharg. And don't try to squirm out of it with trite excuses. I won't be palmed off!

"> Isn't the reference to the League as in 'Human' though?
*cough* *splutter* I certainly hope NOT!!! Why the hell would they refer to a bunch of wankers like that????"

They were high profile fans of 2000AD in the eighties. Like Madness they may even have paid a visit to the Command module. Their 1983 album Dare features the track "I Am The Law".

All you subscribers and people with privileged newsagents, what about this week's prog, eh?

The second gobdropping Storming Heaven cover in three weeks. Tharg, with these psychedelic covers you are spoiling us.

Double helping of SH inside, crikey! There was a time when Green Bonce was more responsible in the thrillpower dosages he administered. For me,
Storming Heaven has been the standout strip of the year so far. Visually, the best thing in the comic for ages, this has perfect 2000AD art; intense, innovative and in your face. Shakara looks great too, but Morrison hasn't given Flint as much to work with as Irving has had from Rennie. And while I'm comparing the two, Storming Heaven wins hands down on the story front too. Shakara has neither the atmosphere or density of ideas with which Rennie has laced Storming Heaven.

Having said that Shakara is still a fine strip and in a Storming-less prog I'd have been raving about it.

I thought  Dredd this week was pretty good too. An OK script from Mr Grant boosted by fab PJ Holden art. Holden's really got to grips with the character, the depiction of Dredd in the opening panel is absolutely spot on!

Right, thats the Good. here comes the Bad and Ugly - Future Shocks. I love FSes when done well, but this shocked for all the wrong reasons. What was Steve Moore thinking? This is a man who's been writing comics professionally for over 20 years! Terrible dialogue, how many kids today say "What the blazes"? As for the ending, not so much a "!" as a "So what?".

Stop slagging off Wagner and Grant!

You don't know what you're talking about and you're in no position to criticise their professionalism.

As a long-standing reader of  2000AD and an aspiring writer you should have more respect for Wagner. His work are open to public discussion and criticism, but his personal and financial ethics are literally none of your business. This prolonged irrational rant simply gives the impression that you're bitter because Rebellion didn't like your screenplay.

Have you seen the posters for Prog 2002 in comic shops? One with Dredd and an absolutely gobsmacking Storming Heaven one!

I hope they get put up on this site.

Just noticed in the updates section a link to Adrian Bamforth's site.

Ade drew the Dredd strip 'Married With Juves' in prog 1262 and you can see the whole thing on his site in original black and white.

There's also a complete preview of  his forthcoming Sinister Dexter strip. I'm not a huge SinDex fan, but this looks like a good one, the unlettered artwork is gorgeous.

Really, scojo? How about this?

"I believe I can write a screenplay as good (or nearly as good!) as John  Wagner.
Hand on heart I do."

Or this?

"My Helter Skelter was far better than Garth's and I only wrote it in about 2 hrs!! ... I bet till my daying day i can write better than every 2000AD
writer.
Any character any time."

This?

"I may be arrogant but I still bet I can write a better Dredd screenplay than you anyday."

"I can write better than Rennie without a pen.
Any day."

"My idea of an alternate Judge invasion headed by Cal and his cronies was far better than Ennis'... I will never accept my H Skelter was inferior to
Garth's."

"Mine was far better. More imagination in my 4 parts than his 12 or how ever
long it was!"

"... My future shocks are as good or bad as any Alan Moore, Peter Milligan,
Steve Moore etc have seen printed in 2k."

"I can show you an inferior fs by alan moore. I read it yesterday. Prog 251.
Two pages in length. Called 'All of them were empty'
It was terrible. Far worse than mine."

Nathan.
