Belated (as usual) film catch-up: Star Trek

Yeah, the winter nights are drawing in, so I'm catching up on all that stuff I didn't get round to seeing at the pictures earlier in the year.

So ... Star Trek. I'm not intrinsically well-disposed towards the franchise for starters -- when it's good, it's excellent, as in much of DS9 or First Contact, but vast swathes of stuff that fans rave about leaves me cold.

But -- fuck me! -- how good was this? Any film that has me feeling that I've had my value for money by the time the titles roll is doing something right. I'm not going to get into any detailed breakdown -- it's great. It's fast, furious, and fun. It looks great and it kicks arse.

And it resets the franchise without rebooting it, in a way that's both clever and respectful.

If you're one of the handful of other people in the country who hasn't already seen this: do. You won't be sorry.

Cheers

And I'm guessing you'll have seen it on the small screen so the Enterprise porn won't have looked as absolutely fucking gorgeous as it did in the IMAX.

Not only is Jim right but I'm also glas somebody else likes First Contact.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

I missed this in the cinema (TWAT!) and I can't wait to see it on DVD. I'll just have to sit really close to the telly and have the headphones on super fucking loud to try and replicate the effect of the big screen I guess. And get someone to occasionally walk in front of me of course...and cough.

To be honest, I had every intention of seeing this in the cinema, but I had so many people tell me how good it was, I kind of went off the idea for fear of it falling short of raised expectations. After this much time, I was back to just being hopeful of an entertaining two hours.

That said, however, I can imagine this rocking on a big screen.

Seriously? There are people who don't rate this in the Holy Trinity* of Top Star Trek movies?

Takes all sorts, I suppose!

* These being II, IV and VIII, although not necessarily in that order other than chronologically.

First Contact's fantastic, but the new Trek film is even better.

I agree. Top of the pile, for me. Fantastic stuff!

I've NEVER been a trekkie, but I felt strangely drawn to the cinema to see this - and it was truly a slab of awesome. Abrams has made Star Trek cool - wha?? And it's now officially more relevant, dynamic, exciting AND sexier than Star Wars. A sad, sad day, and yet, also a wonderful one.

Even Winona couldn't spoil this.

I was lucky enough to see it on an IMAX screen and thought it was absolutley amazing. Not a fan of the series or other films, so needed convincing. Or so I thought....

I didn't even notice it was Winona and I was a big fan of hers in my younger years!

Absolutely loved this movie. And yeah, some of the Enterprise shots on the big screen were virtually nerd porn
The two disker is pre-ordered and should arrive on the release day   :P

Buddy

Also loved this and will get the DVD on release.

The first ten mins alone is some of the best Star Trek put to film.

Just hope they can keep it up in the following films, which, depending on what you read, will have Harry Mudd.

I'm guessing Khan is going to make an appearance by the time of the third film.

I hope not. I'm happy to leave that with Montalban in Star Trek 2. Besides, I'm assuming a new film will still deal with the earlier adventures of the crew, probably before they even encounter Kahn in the original series. I.e it's still the future... or from the perspective of the film, a possible future.

I've still yet to see this film, by the way. I hoped to see it at the cinema with a mate, but we just never got round to it.

I don't know if it would be a good idea to go over all the previous major Trek characters like Khan and Mudd (I never liked Mudd anyway, and I reckon he'd be too comic-y to be any more than a cameo, certainly not a villain, but anyhoo...)

They've set up their own storyline now, and if they bring in more characters from the original than it will just feel like more of a remake than a new film. I admit, I'd kinda like to see how they'd do a new version of Khan vs. Kirk, but it would just be compared to the old one, and that's hard to beat.
You're at the precipice Tony, of an enormous crossroads.

Star Trek

Pros:
The Cast. An excellent choice and the main reason to see this film
The costumes. Very well done. true to the TOS while actually still giving the feeling of "from the future".

Cons
Nokia product placement. Noooooooooo!
Bridge. If you are a Macnophile it's a wet dream. But I always felt that ST showed the future not copied the present and so was let down.
Rest of inside Enterprise. Lazy design. Just pipes and silos. Likely filmed in a chemical plant or large scale brewery.
Enterprise external.  It's how big??!http://gizmodo.com/5253324/how-big-is-the-new-enterprise-compared-to-the-old-one Again the lack of attention to detail on all this kind of thing was a letdown.
Plot.
Looking through all the bells and whistles and Mac emulation,  it's pretty much Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis rehashed. Data = planet Vulcan
As Mrs Tweak enjoyed it I have to say it is a pretty good Sci Fi, action film that does indeed appeal to a broader audience. But it is not a Trek film.
