I kind of bailed on tat when I ended up with a ton of Pop Vinyl things and other various gaming/movie figures. I had an ultimate purge on all of it. Sold everything apart from a Judge Death pop, a couple of Golden Girls ones and some Big Trouble in Little China ones. I do still have an alien facehugger plushie.
Sold a bunch of Nintendo game and watch units and all my old consoles too.
But, I'm in the process of moving house and so for the next house my list of needful things is;
a decent soundbar for my TV (should have done this years ago)
an ultrawidescreen monitor for my PC
and once I get everything done, I'm really quite keen on getting an arcade cabinet. I quite like the smaller ones that Arcade1UP do. But I hate the art on them. So unless they make a Donkey Kong or Bomb Jack one, I'll likely not bother.
And I'd really like to commission some Judge Death art by either Nick P or Dave R. I expect that'll involve some serious payola if it can be done at all.
However, I'll likely not buy much or any of that stuff. I just like mental window shopping!

Yep, that's the one. To be fair the collection was all Alien, Robocop type stuff for the longest time. But yeah Golden Girls. Now if they made a New Statesman Alan B'Stard one, I'd have to get that. Or a Judge Death one. But I'm super tat averse now.

I sold a tonne of Star Wars lego for more than I paid for it. Including a Star Destroyed bought under the influence on Boxing Day one year and stuck in my loft when I realised it was so big I would have nowhere to put the model.
I had a motorized At At, a Tantive IV and discontinuted stuff.
Got enough for a sofa bed, which is of more use now that plastic tat. I have since avoided all such stuff. It's cool, really cool, stuff but I just can't justify it any more.

I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need a first edition, first print, of H.G. Wells' 'The War of the Worlds'.
I haven't seen one in that good condition going so cheaply, only £2500, and I haven't used my credit card in a long time, and it is my holy grail of books, but what would I do with it, because it would just sit there next to my other books doing nothing, probably in a plastic case to protect it, and I'd have to buy those cotton gloves to be able to handle it, but then it would look so great next to my first edition of his collected sci-fi works, although it would only be me that would get to appreciate it, and what's the point in all this stuff if you can't share it, so I probably won't get it, but it's so cheeeaaappp, and a chance like this might never come up again, and want it so bad and and and and aaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!

- Can I afford to spend the money?
- Will the value of the object increase over time* if I wish to sell it?
- Can I keep the object in reasonable condition so that it doesn't devalue over time (no risk of damp, mould, fading, etc)?
*obviously investments can go down as well as up.

Oh the Jurassic Park T-Rex has been haunting me for a while. Luckily I only want it for the dionsaur and so have managed to resist.

So what is the general feeling from the forum based on the answers above?
Will it bring you joy? I know that sounds pat, but it really does sit at the centre of a lot of this stuff. If a collection feels like a burden, it's time to offload it (assuming financial considerations aren't forcing your hand anyway, of course).
Everyone has their own triggers for things they love, and also relevant items they love the idea of owning. I recently bought all the Dark Horse Usagi HCs. They cost a fucking fortune. I now have various duplicates to offload AND the entire SC set. But this is one of my favourite comic series ever, and I felt like I had to have it. Fortunately, right now, I could also afford it. Also, I can sell these books for at least what I paid for them.
So I'm not all GO AND SPEND ALL THE MONEY, but if something is going to make you happy AND you can readily afford it, that seems like it could be a good option. If it's also an investment, that helps too. (HC comics seem pretty good for that. Lots of Image stuff, e.g, goes OOS and so people selling those make a tidy sum if they no longer want a book. Hence me thinking "fuck it" and going full HC these days. Much sturdier; nicer to read; hold their value rather than losing it in a bloody instant.)

I have bits of original art that will stay tooked away and for long periods of time but when I get them out my heart sings. There's folks with a lot more than me. Has no practical value, I can look easily enough at other 'versions' of that art in context but I still love to have it.
I have lots of bits of comparitively cheap stuff and sometime think I'd be better off cashing all that in and going for a big, 'grail' piece. Won't do it anytime soon but this book sounds like that and if you're asking this many questions I get the sense (only the sense) that you'll regret it if the chance passes?

Thanks folks. It's only a few days since it arrived and I still look at it in disbelief. Is this thing mine? This book that has been such a part of my life? That won me my English Lit. degree? Do I really own the first print? Constant wonder. I never dreamt the day would come. Still very happy indeed!
I got an acid-free archival box, which I'm going to decorate with martian war machines and line with bubble wrap, which is going to be a saw place for this rather delicate item. I do have a lesser known first print book of his sci-fi short stories too, so that'll also go in there.
Oh man, that is so cool, I'm really jealous. Even though it's a serious wodge, it'll never go down in value if you take care of it, and may even become a valuable heirloom.
I too am an absolute fan of this book. My first experience was the 50s movie, which blew me away. I then realised we had the book in the house, a rare sci-fi gem amongst all the boring crap - it was a 1966 hardback ex-school library edition which I still have. It's worth nowt, I doubt even a charity shop would take it, but I adore this battered old book, especially the single illustration at the front:

Jeff Wayne's version was the first LP I ever bought with my own money (I was spending Christmas money and also bought Pink Floyd's The Wall at the same time, which I sometimes cite as my first album, depending on the audience :lol:). That's a piece of music that still thrills me today. And I went to see the live version a few years ago. I even like that movie with Malcolm McDowell.

Just been back to drool over the photos - I love how the cover is worn at the bottom where generations of fingers have held and read it over the years - far better than any untouched pristine copy of anything.
