New Comic Book Day Megathread

Just finished reading the last part of the New Deadwardians.  The story had a good ending, although the series has been slightly underwhelming - lacked a little oomph.  I wouldn't be surprised if there is another Deadwardians series in the future.

Also read Fatale # 9.  Enjoyed this more than Deadwardians.  I think this second arc has been better than the first for Fatale, although some of the art looked slightly rushed IMO (some features looked out of proportion).

Haven't read the Maggie Simpsons one shot yet.

Last thing i did for halloween, before crashing out listening to another terrible episode of 'nebulous', was read the final issue of 'american vampire: lord of nightmares', whichrrived yesterday.

Aside from the shoddy art, whicht times has been appalling- dont get an artist who plainly cant draw animals of any kind to do a series about shapeshifters!- this was a damn good read, and the first mini ive seen through to the end in years.

Not sure how it'll impact on the parent series, or whether we'll see Dracula in that (ive only read the first trade) but this spin-off has inspired me to find out. So DC has another regular sale.

Added the origins of Skeletor, He-man is great bad guys are always better so i have high hopes.

I heard about that Skeletor origins book. I saw some preview pages and the art looked pretty nifty. I haven't seen an He-Man since the old cartoon reruns as a kid so I might check this out.

Dial H #6 hitting the shelves finally this wednesday, a one shot story before China goes into his 2nd story arc. Can't wait.

To salve my disappointment at the cancellation of Frankenstein, as well as the natural ends of both the latest Night Force mini and American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares, I've had to look around for some new comics to try. So- i've ordered Phantom Stranger #0 and Justice League Dark #0 & #13. If, as ive heard, Frankenstein is to be shoehorned into JLD, then i may as well see what it's all about.  i've also decided to restart Hellblazer after a decade or so away, so a bit of extra-curricular John Constantine might be fun.

On the subject of JC, i guess he's not ageing in a realistic manner anymore then? I remember being impressed they made such a deal of his fortieth back in the day and having it in my head he sort of agein real time. I suppose that's not so anymore- how old is he supposed to be now?

Funnily enough, I've just been having a massive reread of the Delano Hellblazer books this afternoon, and I can answer that quite precisely - he was born on May 10 1952.

That much spookiness in one sitting can have it's effects though - when a huge spider came crawling into my line of sight, I nearly jumped out of my skin!

The Nu52 version was de-aged, I think fans put him at in his late twenties or thereabouts.
The regular Vertigo incarnation still ages in real-time, think he's somewhere in his sixties now. Looks a bit younger though, the miracle of demon blood I'd imagine!

I'm a massive fan of Joe Kubert and am very excited about this series, though I've decided to wait and get it in hardcover. Seems particularly fitting now as it will contain what I assume is his last work with the DC characters. Glad to hear positive feedback.

GUARDING THE GLOBE #3 - Return of the Astounding Wolf-Man!
JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #329 - Current comic line up isn't great. But I love the separate 'floppy trades' reprints that are bagged with every issue. So its still worth it.
NIKOLAI DANTE VOL.10: SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL GN - The final conclusion to one of the greatest comic epics of ALL TIME. It might not have had the perfect ending, but it was the right ending.
STORM DOGS #1 - Think I took a stab at this, liked the look of the art. Can't remember the premises. But its a sci-fi book from Image. So I've got a good feeling.
THE HYPERNATURALS #5 - Last issue's ending was sort of predictable, really hope there's more too it. Still a great comic. Clone 45 is the MAN.
THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #7 - The best part about this comic is that I never know what's going to happen next.
THE TRANSFORMERS: REGENERATION ONE #85 - Optimus Prime Vs. Megatron. SMACKDOWN in the ruins of a dead Earth!

Remember when I only had one comic last week? Making up for it now! Pound for pound this might be the single best comic week I've encountered all year. Also the most expensive at like $80. FARTZ

Did anyone pick up the first ish of Joe Kubert Presents? I'm halfway through it so far, worth it for Kubert's Hawkman story alone. There's a spread in particular on pg. 2 with Hawkman and Hawkgirl flying towards one of the sky cities in Thanagar that will absolutely stun you, I've flipped back to it countless times at this stage! Just amazes me that this guy was putting out work at this consistency even at his age...

I'm a massive fan of Joe Kubert and am very excited about this series, though I've decided to wait and get it in hardcover. Seems particularly fitting now as it will contain what I assume is his last work with the DC characters. Glad to hear positive feedback.

Well, i shan't be buying any further issues of The Phantom Stranger. Having read #0 last night, i can say with some certainty it's the biggest crock of dogshit i've seen all year, with a bland story in which nothing of any interest happens (stranger is judas iscariot is he? Thought he always was) and that nothing interesting doesnt really hang together into a proper story- and art which is so dated and stilted as to reduce the entire package to an absolute chore to read. Cross that one off the list.
