Is no one else picking any of the Marvel NOW! titles up?

Been toying with getting a few, but something always comes along to put me off, a dodgy review, an interview with a creator that makes the premise seem a bit wonky, or that reminds me how detached I am from Marvel these days.

I think people know what I think about Marvel, post-Disney takeover. That said, I decided I can't continue being a grumpy old fuck, and have really gotten into both FANTASTIC FOUR and FF. It's all one big story, and the three issues published so far are very close to the kind of comics I very much like to read when no one is looking. Great fun, marvellously silly and with brilliant art- especially the FF side of things. I've always liked Marvel's First Family, but have never managed to buy their comic for longer than four months at a time before. We'll see how it goes this time.

Will also be buying Superior Spider-Man, as everything post-BND I've been trade-waiting on. Time to go comics! (or digital, if I buy a tablet in the sales)

Have you tried the Waid run, if not can I suggest buying the Waid run? Its maybe not quite as brilliant as some say, but its not far off. You can pick it up for very little as well (or I did a few years ago I should say).

I personally reckon the Waid run is in the top 3 FF runs ever - particularly those issues in which he's teamed up with the late, great Mike Wieringo (which is most of the run.) Absolutely pitch perfect (with the caveat that I am not entirely sure I agree with his lowest-of-the-low take on Doom.)

BPRD, happy and multiple warheads for me.
I can't understand why both BPRD's come out on the same day but i'll cope somehow.
happy is getting exciting and not long to go.
as for multiple warheads it is even nicer art than King City and just as zany.

The Adventurer

I forgot a very important comic coming out this week...

JSA THE LIBERTY FILES: THE WHISTLING SKULL #1 - Controversy about Tony Harris's facebook sexism aside, I LOVE the previous the JSA Liberty Files series. And a continuation of that will always have attention. Having B. Clay Moore on writing chores is a bit of a new twist, but he's pretty reliable. I'm curious about how this series seems to be trying to introduce a new original character in the framework of the Liberty Files universe. I'm curious about what the plan for the Whistling Skull actually is.

FF is underwhelming and relies heavily upon Allred's artwork to do all the heavy lifting, but you know not to expect Shakespeare when your framing device is characters giving a reality tv interview, so it gets a pass.  Ephemeral and pointless, but okay superhero comics.  I think it's biggest problem is that without the push of being a Marvel flagship title and retailers shoving copies into people's standing orders whether they request them or not, this would be a perfectly good but ultimately forgettable Image book from about ten years ago.

Captain America tries to deliver on its good notion of "superheroes should be fun", but the focus keeps pulling back to juvenile emo like torture and wife-beating - you know, the kind of thing Jack Kirby did all the time.  I think doesn't hold together under its own internal logic but mileage may vary for others.  It reminds me of a decompressed issue of the Heroes Reborn Cap - remember that? - and comes off as very Jeph Loeb-ish but without those overwritten captions that ruin the pacing.  I have gone right off JRjr somewhere along the line, too.  Possibly I just resent that he can turn this stuff out at a rate of knots, the bastard.

A letters page in the very first issue of a comic that didn't send out review copies ought to give you an indication of how pleased with itself it is, but Avengers Arena goes even further in being so fond of its children-being-graphically-murdered-in-each-issue premise that the baddy spends the first issue stating it over and over again and if a kid didn't explode on the last page literally nothing would happen.  Kev Walker does the work the script doesn't and it looks awesome, but it's a scant and disappointingly smug read.

IIRC this was meant to be a mini-series published under Wildstorm like Silent Dragon, Killapalooza et al. and they rewrote it into DCU continuity after Wildstorm was killed off.

No, I got that. I'm just curious if despite that if its going to gel well, and really give me what I expect from a Liberty Files story. Or instead put all the focus on this new character (who could be cool too), when I really just want to see the Bat, the Cat, and the Clock kick all the ass.

Although it left a rancid taste in my mouth, I tried a few issues of Marvel No.
My LCS (Whassup 'Big Bang Comics'?) is selling every issue number 1 for a paltry €2 (approximately 0.37 pence Sterling with current exchange rates).
Apart from some handsome but predictable artwork, nothing has made me want to stick around for number 2 (or number 3 & 4, also an sale less than one month after number 1).

Colin YNWA

Well I was in town anyway so thought that I'd pop into my LCS just in case not expecting much and there was only a couple. A rather nice Wonder Woman 15 intrigued with quite where Azzarello is going to take this New Gods thing. There is a logical conclusion for it but don't think we'll go that far will we??? After all the Greek Gods are the old Gods and well we know what happened there...

Also in was Nowhere Men 2 which I'm loving. While the larger story of the four superstar scientists steadily builds we have a more immediate problems of the mutanted folk on the Space station... or wherever they now turn up hurling along to keep things moving. Nicely balanced and all  very intriguing. Really enjoying this.

I also put in an order from various online stories with my X-Mas monies.

Pogo book 2 - really looking forward to this one which will determine whether I'm in for the whole series I#d guess.

Charley's War 9 - which even though I kept off any X-Mas lists this year I've still conspired to not get until now some how?

Exile on the Planet of the Apes - Loving all of Boom's Apes books

Doctor Who - Child of Time - Much prefer the Panini Doctor Magazine stuff to the IDW stuff so this is my Who of choice

Nexus Omnibus 1 - Always wanted to check out Nexus so what better time to do so?

O-Men Book 2 - Martin Eden's brilliant self published title that I somehow managed to miss at Kapow this year

Fury Vol. 1 - How the hell has this flown under my radar, even with this thread and the Ennis thread I've still managed to avoid any knowledge of how great this series sounds.

#370
Running late because of the shipping schedule this week being a bit goofy.

NEW COMICS SHIPPING THE WEEK OF 01/02/13

My (Print) Pulls
INVINCIBLE #99 - Last issue's final panels were pretty unexpected. Kirkman's giving that 'The Death of Everyone' quite the work out.
PROPHET #32 - This issue is apparently all done by series artist (albeit one we haven't seen in a while) Simon Roy. It'll be interesting to see an issue not written by Graham.
PUNK ROCK JESUS #6 - This mini-series has defined a lot of my expectations. Its been pretty darn good. Sean Murphy is a phenomenal artist.
THE HYPERNATURALS #7 - Still pretty great. I'm starting to get a sense of who the actual baddie is. And if my suspicions are correct... its not going to end well for the Hypernaturals.
THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #8 - New status-quo for the Manhattan Projects. But can they hold on to it? Probably. They're pretty tenacious.

My (Digital) Pulls
2000 AD 1813 - Woke up this morning to the most amazing of experiences. My copy of 2000 AD already downloaded and ready to read on my iPad. This right here is why I bought an eReader. So that my favorite comic will be there to greet me when I wake up in the morning. No more waiting on Diamond to finally getting around to shipping out months late issues that don't correlate to any Earthly shipping list. Just my Prog, in my hot hand, the day it comes out. Zarjaz!

Holy moley this week i feel like my purse is aching like my balls after a good kicking!
Is everything I want out this week? Why o why don't these publishing guys focus on my needs a bit more?
I want loads of them.
I'm going to the shop tomorrow to weigh them each, heaviest wins, i think that's fair. Never judge by the cover, but the heft is a sure fire sign of quality those digital fools can't rely on anymore.
I'm all about old fashioned values, when's my flogging matron?

Davek

best issue yet of Fatale IMO. More of a Lovecraftian feel to it than previously.

Prophet also felt like it got back on track with this week's Simon Roy issue. I think the title had lost its way a bit - I like Brandon Graham but he can be too abstract at times. simon Roy took the title back to its solid sci-fi foundations.

Punk Rock Jesus was quite a good last issue - I felt it could have been much better if it wasn't such a short series.

The Adventurer

Really? I've thought recent Prophet issues have been more straight forward then previous. Now that Old Man Prophet seems to have taken center stage, and his motley crew have some kind of goal to work toward (and regular characters have other regular characters to talk to and develop through)

Id agree with that Adventurer, though I'm still a month behind print to save the shillings, so am really looking forward to the Simon Roy stuff too- his art in the first arc was one of the reasons I fell love with this title.
