THE TRANSFORMERS: REGENERATION ONE #89 - ComiXology had a sale on IDW's other Transformers comics, so I picked up Last Stand of the Wreckers, and More Then Meets The Eye trades and gave them a read. Honestly? Regeneration-One is a lot better.

I tried a few other IDW Transformers comics on the cheap too Adventurer...absolutely NO comparison to Regeneration One (which is the most perfectly toned Transformers comic since, well, Transformers 80).
My inner 12 year old is actually forcing Regeneration One to the top of my read pile tonight...Its a crazy world!

The Adventurer

See. I don't really have an inter 12 year old screaming at me. I mean, I LIKE Transformers, but I don't LOVE Transformers. I'm reading Regeneration-One based soley on the fact that Simon Furman is writing one heck of a sci-fi action book.

Speaking of Simon Furman... why hasn't he ever contributed to 2000 AD in any significant way? Seems criminal really.

True.

Professor Bear

I always gathered from interviews about 2000ad and the Marvel UK office of the time that Furman just didn't need to work at 2000ad as he was busy as an editor and writer at Marvel making Transformers (US), Death's Head, Dragon's Claws - that's 3 US-format books coming out at the same time on top of his 2000ad-format stuff (5-8 page weekly installments) for the licenced books like Transformers (weekly), Zoids, etc, and the odd one-off for Marvel US (What If?) and serials in Marvel Comics Presents.
Given the overlap of talent between Marvel UK and 2000ad at the time, the most likely scenario is he just couldn't fit it in, or he'd just get it published at Marvel (Dragon's Claws is pure 2000ad IMO) rather than cross the floor.

I'm in the same boat.  My appreciation for them extends only to half-ironic viewings of the animated movie, a grudging admittance that Prime is very entertaining when it's on top form, and fond memories of the weekly comic as once you stripped it of the toy line trappings it was a grim, galaxy-spanning yarn about a neverending war with quasi-spiritual undertones and occasionally shocking and/or offhand deaths for main characters - in a weekly comic aimed at kids.  Regeneration is more of the same and is pretty great so far.  My only gripe would be the latter robot DNA mcguffin that turns Transformers evil may be too daft even for TF, and the colouring is too high-quality to really blend in with the original series (I presume because of the six-arc storyline structures we're seeing so far that the series is supposed to chronologically continue from the trade collections of the Marvel reprints seen in the last few years).  Still a great read so far, though, and the old-school variant covers are class.

Link Prime

Some good points about Furman's career Prof.

And I agree...the 'old school' covers are brilliant. I've been trying to get them if available, only missed it one month I think.

Ha! That Manhattan Project panel (fella punching the horse) seems to be everywhere these days. I must have a seen it in 4 or 5 different articles, blogs etc.

Absolutely love the Red Seas one you've chosen. Its a fantastic panel. Also think its hilarious the way that loo has been made to look 'future' in the Star Wars panel. Kinda reminds me of the 'future' dancing they had in Buck Rogers tv show.

Great idea TA! That One Hit Punch Man panel for some reason always gets me giggling!

What's with all the violence against horses in comics lately?

Mabs

Ouch! It must be a night-mare being a horse in comics!  :D

NEW COMICS SHIPPING THE WEEK OF 03-20-13

My Digital Pulls
2000 AD #1824 - A great jumping on point for new readers! Four all new stories! Including the great Victorian crime comic STICKLEBACK! Now is a great time to jump on board, grab your DRM free digital copies in PDF or CBZ format directly from the 2000 AD future shop!
DARK HORSE PRESENTS #22 - Not as hyped about this series as I've used to be, in fact I'm lagging behind a month as I wait for last month's issue to price drop. I mean, its still good. But... Finder is becoming more and more infrequent in appearances.
FABLES #127 - This new arc is a bit of a slow burn, and the new bad guy seems a little obsurdly powered for someone who just came out of no where. But... I'm curious where its going.
INVINCIBLE #101 - Last issue was a bit of a head trip (even though Mark's 'death' was a one heck of a convoluted cop out). Curious where things are going from here.
JSA LIBERTY FILES: THE WHISTLING SKULL #4 - Not super stoked about this series any more, but the last panel from last issue was pretty brutal.
JUDGE DREDD: YEAR ONE #1 - I make no bones about not liking the IDW Judge Dredd on-going title. Its writing is sloppy and slow, characters really seem out out of character. And the art isn't anything really exciting. But THIS. This mini-series might just be what the doctor ordered. It feels like Dredd, it looks like Dredd. It probably helps that its written by a 2000 AD guy (Matt Smith, the head editor of all of 2000 AD actually) and drawn by a 2000 AD guy. In other Judge Dredd news, Judge Dredd Origins GN is getting a domestic US print release. So it'll be a lot easier to find at a good price. JD Origins is a really good place to get into the current goings on of Judge Dredd.
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #18 - Apparently this is Giffen's last issue. What a massive disappointment, he roared onto last issue like a lion. His art style might not be everyone. But if you want bold comic action, he's got few peers.
SAGA #11 - Ending of last issue seriously made me tear up a bit. Poor The Will, nothing ever seems to fall his way.
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #60 - One-Punch Man. One-Punch Man. One-Punch Man. One-Punch Man. Etc... forever.

Wow 'Nowhere Men #1' is on fourth print, nice to have backed a winner for once. A lot of my regulars, IT Girl, Planet of the Apes (I've warned you all about this one) and others seem to be struggling, even The Massive isn't doing as good as it should.

Anyway fantastic hail this week. Earth 2 (#10) is the only question mark. There's always something to like in every issue, but I'm beginning to wonder if its enough to justify. Nicola Scott, whose art I normally like seems to be getting too into DC's house style and I'm not really enjoying her work here, might well be an inking issue?

Elsewhere in DCU, Batwing #18 is a guilty pleasure, there's nothing too great (in fact its damn right average) about it, but I do love it for some reason. The Rotworld storyline finished in Swamp Thing and Animal Man #18 I've enjoyed it, but at the same time I'm glad its over, its time to move on. Swamp Thing I'm leaving, but Animal Man, which seemed to be spoiled all over the shop, was quite heartbreaking and superb and I'm really looking forward to what's to come. Batman #18, not bad at all, aside from Andy Kubert's art, which I've never been a fan of. Surely its too obvious if they're setting up the new Robin here?

Elsewhere all my 'indie' titles are absolute winners. Planet of the Apes Cataclysm #7 deserves a much bigger audience that it'll probably get. Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #2 is just such fun, everyone concerned seems to be having a ball. Really enjoyed Sex #1, except what the hell was up with the use of highlights in the lettering? Did not like that at all, very distracting. The star of the bunch though was Nowhere Men #4 fantastic comic. It does seem to be becoming something quite special and the series is subtly building a right old head of steam.

Good bunch this week.

I think Eric Powell's Goon horse-punch is the best of the lot
