Anyone actually read Uber # 0?
Reviews are starting to garner my interest, but you'd sooner get a your hands on a Dead Sea scroll FFS.
Heard a reprint edition with extra material is out soon. Must get a copy of it.

Read it last night, it's some decent Nazi supersoldier nonsense, there's a lot of set-up for the amount of pages it covers, some OK art within but it is a bit muddy and I found it hard to differentiate some of the characters in some panels. I think I'll continue with it unless I have problems getting my hands on #1.

Art aside I really enjoyed it. The art I have to say just isn't too my taste and at time lacked clear storytelling. Also its 'Avatar'ness, by which I mean its gore for gore sake took away somewhat from the piece. It removed some of the horror by being so explicit.

All that said yeah I'll be back as it was enjoyable and its positives far outweighed its negatives.

And three on the bounce from me with my round up of my latest haul.

It wasn't bad over all. Earth 2 11 hangs on in there and there were moments this month to love. I'm giving this to issue 12 then we'll see. Batman 19 was solid but uninspiring compared to whats gone before. Still intrigued by whats to come. Batwing 19 was a blast despite the reviews and while it hurried to move things along it did so in an entertaining logical manner. My main concern is the very thing that makes this book unique (its setting) seems to be the very thing that will be sacrificed to try to pull the readers back. Its going to have to be good over the next couple of months to survive this one. Animal Man 19 was by far the pick of my DC bunch this month and it was a harrowing delight.

Rocketeer - Plant Hollywood 3 and Planet of the Apes Cataclysm 8, both continue to be a blast for very different reasons. Caligula - Heart of Rome 4 continues to be wonderful nonsense. The thing is the 'Avatar'ness of it all, the over the top violence and sex do grate a bit as this could be a stronger title if it didn't revel in such things quite so much. Sex 2 on the other hand is probably the pick of the bunch this month, really enjoyed it. The sex at times feels a bit needlessly over the top but it does serve a purpose and does serve the story. At times it pushes the edge of being a bit titillating for the sake of it but it did hold it together and it was a very interesting read. Great book. Just a shame Joe Casey comes across as such an ass in the letters page!

My Digital Pulls
2000 AD #1828 - Eisner Award Nominated series baby! why aren't you reading it? (oh wait, on this forum you are!)
CYBER FORCE #4 - Even though this series is free, I'm honestly not sure I can be assed to read any more of it. Just not doing it for me.
FABLES #128 - This arc is... odd. Snow White has been really been getting rung through the ringer by some douche that nobody can touch. But Bigby's on the scene, so we'll see how that's going to shake out. There's been some rumors that Bigby might not make it out alive.
JSA LIBERTY FILES: THE WHISTLING SKULL #5 - Man, I don't know about this series any more. Its just not doing it for me. Not like the first two Liberty Files anyway.
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #19 - Liking this arc a lot, a lot of people seem to generally not care for the Legion right now. But I dig it.
SONIC UNIVERSE #51 - Worlds Collide Part 1 was mostly exposition to get things set up (Dr. Wily and Dr. Eggman might be one of fictions great unexpected Bromances btw) so I'm pretty excited to start getting to the meat of this crossover. And how rad is that cover?
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #20 - Torriko continues to surprise me. It sort of got the Dragon Ball Z problem of each installment being a drawn out fight scene. But the character designs, and the fight choreography are so off the wall I can't help but love it. Narato has gotten back to the present events and taken a nose dive in coherency again, so that's too bad. Haven't got to the rest yet.

CYBER FORCE #4 - Even though this series is free, I'm honestly not sure I can be assed to read any more of it. Just not doing it for me.

The months long gaps between issues are too much for me, I can't even remember what this is about now, I can't even remember if I ordered #4 as I put the order in months ago for the bunch of them.

Hawkmumbler

Anyone picked up X #0? I'm quite intrigued by it and might subscribe if I go ahead and buy and Ipad.

The Adventurer

Well I read the contents of X #0 in Dark Horse Presents. I wasn't really impressed. Basicly X goes around killing a bunch of mob bosses in various brutal ways.

Herm. Might take a peek and give it a try anyway, anything on the essential digital sub list at the moment?

The Adventurer

#502
Weekly Shonen Jump. Though if you're outside the US I'm not sure if that's available to you.

Other then that, I'm often stupidfied with how good Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man actually are. But you have to be jonesing for an All Ages title (note that I did not say 'Kids Title') to really appreciate either. Still, three of the best 'Super-Hero' comics around IMO. But those aren't digital exclusive.

True fact. Buying an iPad was the best thing I ever did as a comic book reader. The convenience, I can not describe.

Protip: Get a 64gb iPad if you can swing it. I got a 32gb pad, but quickly learned that comics, especially HD comics from ComiXology are deceptively large in file size. I've had mine since November and I'm already full up. I've had to learn how to stop trying to have everything downloaded, and pick and choose what I load up in advance. And not be afraid to delete archive something I don't plan to reread any time soon. Not really a deal breaker, but it sure would be nice to have another 32gigs laying around right about now.

Out of interest can I ask how many comics that amounts to? That fill 32gb (or the proportion given over to comics that is)

The Adventurer

I was going to do this long estimation process concerning the 400 ComiXology purchases I have and how much space they took up before I deleted a whole bunch from my device. But then I remembered the average (32 page) HD comic is about 60 megabytes in size. So quick math says of the 28gbs of available space a 32gb device gives you you can fit about 450 standard HD comics. Of course that's only if you have nothing else installed.  Which is unlikely.

At my peak I had the majority of my puchases downloaded at once, filling somewhere between 14 and 16 gigs. I've paired it down to 4.5 gigs at this point. Other comic apps (including 2000 AD with all Progs since Prog 2013) average about 1.5 gigs each at the moment. But most of those use more compression and lower resolutions then ComiXology so the file sizes are smaller.

I still love the feel of physical comics. But at the moment digital is more practical in terms of space and money, so it's that way for now. I fully intend to keep on top of TPB and Tankobon though.

Colin YNWA

Yeah at some point in the future I accept I'll be going digital. I haven't found a platform yet that completely makes me happy (I'm waiting for larger screen tablets to become more cost effective I think). The main reason is cos the amount of space my physical collection takes is just silly, even though I sell stuff off regularly. While I won't be getting rid of it I'd like it not to expand too much more.

Going digital on new purchases and selected back issues would solve that physical storage issue BUT then I'll just have a virtual one. Or have to do that thing where you're just 'renting' the comic which has some inherent problems.

Online storage seems like an option, but will that have the same problems as Comixology in theory i.e. if the company you use goes out of business what happens to your stuff? Is that a real problem or is it just a media exaggerated fear? Is your stuff protected should something happen?

Hawkmumbler

The Adventurer

Yes.

One-Punch Man is greatest thing since ever.

Colin YNWA

Welcome to the world of me me, I I comics.

Last year (almost to the day as it happens) I embarked on a project to try to change my comics reading. My plan was to try a new independent title every month. For every one I enjoyed I'd drop a DC title (big DC fan). Now it was never going to be as clear cut as that (one for one), but over all I aimed across the year (hence this post) I'd half my then 19 a month DC purchases and open up my comic reading, as I was missing out on a lot of interesting titles 'cos I didn't want to spend more than I was a month on comics.

How has it gone I hear you cry... no really I do.

Well a lot 'better' than expected. My DC purchases have gone from 19 a month to 7, Animal Man, Batman, Batman Inc, Batwing, Earth 2, Jonah Hex (ASW, call it what you like its still Jonah Hex!) and Wonder Woman. With Batman Inc finishing in July and two titles very much on the cusp of cancellation or being dropped from my pull list - Batwing can't be long for this world and Earth 2, with no replacements in sight I could, in theory, be down to 4 by the Summer!

Its been weird. Once you start dropping titles from the majors it seems to snowball. I think this time the Rubicon for me was finally dropping The Flash, a comic I'd followed for ages without really loving it 'cos I'm a Flash fan. When that went the rest followed quickly. Some series ended, or creative teams I was following finished their runs and more significantly, none of the new titles DC offered, or new creative teams replacing those I'd followed, tempted me much.

It was similar when I finally got sick of Bendis' Avengers and dropped those title. My Marvel reading fair plunged (also I was getting sick of the perpetual Marvel crossovers). On a side note I will soon be getting two Marvel books regularly (aside from Daredevil which I trade wait) for the first time in a couple of years. FF will be joined by Superior Foes of Spider-man.

On the other end of the scale my ongoing Indie titles has risen from 4 to 11 titles - East of West (still on try out), Fatale, IT Girl and the Atomics (while it lasts), L'il Depressed Boy, Mudman, Planet of the Apes - Cataclysm, Nowhere Men, Sex, The Massive and Uber (still on try out) with The Victories and Lazarus being added for a try when they come out.

Over all this has been a complete success. Far from spending more, as I feared, I'm spending less on comics each month and the comics I do get are far more diverse and interesting. As I said when I started this most importantly I've moved from getting comics I like, to getting comics I love (mostly).

What I fun year its been.
