Thought I'd add my current pull-list to the discussion!

Sex Criminals: This has been a great, fun read with lots of great hidden art (mostly involving funny porn titles). Not sure how long it can keep going but it's definitely worth checking out, even if you do get funny looks reading it on the train..

Outcast: Jumped on the hype bandwagon with this - great atmosphere and intrigue building so far.

Southern Bastards: This finished it's first story arc but I think this is the best thing I have read coming out at the moment. TPB was just released so check it out - it's like nothing I've read before and completely brutal.

Wytches: Picked up the first issue of this last night - another hyped Image book but I love Jock's artwork so it was a no-brainer.

Imperial: Already on issue 3/4 - a light hearted twist on a superhero tale - actually made me laugh out loud at least once which is rare for a comic book. I haven't met anyone else following this but I think it's a good, light read. It reminds me a bit of Rob Williams' Ordinary.

Wild's End: Dan Abnett and INJ Culbard's anthropomorphic tale.. first issue (of 6?) was interesting, with a shocking ending contrasting against the quaint opening scenes. I've not checked out Dark Ages by the same pair but I've heard great things about that mini-series as well. Seems like these two are knocking it out of the park. I've been meaning to pick up Celeste; a full graphic novel by Culbard as well. Anyone read it?

Men of Wrath: Another Jason Aaron mini-series - I picked up the first issue yesterday and am excited to read another gritty story by the writer of Southern Bastards and Scalped.

Nailbiter: Picked up the first TPB of this the other day - pretty pulpy, trashy horror stuff, but for some reason leaves me wanting to know more and follow the story. Worth checking out - some of the 'nailbiting' imagery sends a chill down your spine.

Obviously picking up Saga and Walking Dead as well... and there are so many more I would love to check out (Trees, The Fade Out.. ). Along with my subscription to the prog and meg, this is becoming an expensive habit... damn.

SmallBlueThing

A late addition series yesterday, in a pile of Batmans and Deadpools for the kids: Marvel's  new Thor #1. You know,  the controversial "She Thor" one.

Bloody hell,  what a great comic!  I've not bought or read any Thor in decades- oh, except Garth Ennis/ Glenn Fabry's 'VIkings' mini, which probably doesn't count but which was huge and gory fun.

On the strength of this I will not only be immediately ordering #2, but picking up the entirety  of Jason Aaron's 'God of Thunder' run as well.  Wowsers!

Hearing a lot of good stuff about this- Image digital sale on at them moment, think I'll try it.

Rover Red Charlie was splendid though. Nice art and the idea of Apocalypse viewed from the eyes of the pets left behind is a good one well written.

That premise alone is superb, that's why I can't wait to read it!
Been trade rating this. Sounds great.

Gotta second this. The publisher, Image, have been somewhat of a new discovery for me - alongside many of the creators I found from buying way too much stuff from Top Shelf's recent sale - and although I've enjoyed immensely just about everything that's caught my attention enough for me to buy it, the first four issues of this series in particular have been remarkably good. In fact, my only concern is if Aaron can follow through and deliver a second act as excellent as the first! Definitely a recommendation for me too.

Just succumbed to buying Birthright #1 as well due to a special offer in the local comic store (Travelling Man in Manchester).. another Tomlinson effort (same guy as Nailbiter).

I'm not generally a fantasy genre kinda guy but there was something about it that is gonna make me try issue 2. We will see if this gets added to the pull list..

Worth checking out if you liked Flight of the Navigator and other 80s childhood adventure movies.

War Stories #1: Ah! Garth Ennis presents another run on his homage to Battle Picture Weekly. I very much suspect our Colin will have some words to say on this.

So with thanks to Hawkmonger for the reminder this popped through the post today and while its certainly a solid start hasn't grabbed me the way Ennis' war stuff normally does. Still early days and there's certainly potential.

Ragnarok 2 & Dark Engine 3 never made it to the Emerald Isle's shores this week- anyone know if it was the same in the UK?

Can't speak to Dark Engine but Ragnarok 2 made it to my comic store and damned, damned fine comic it is. Its testament to Walt Simonson that while the issue is little more than an extended scrap, with a little bit of plot development bolted on, it feels like so much more than that. This is what I was hoping this comic would be. Brilliant stuff.

There were a few number 2s this week. Fade Out 2 was quite superb. The book to date offers nothing new but its doing what Brubaker and Phillips seem to do so well frankly who cares. Good as this is its not the best #2 but I'm saving the other for book of the haul... so.... we'll skip to Doctor Who (11th) 3 this continues to be everything the series was but is beginning to do it a little better, quite fantastic fun and given that I'm now, for the first time I think, backing up NuWho episodes and have just finished Crimson Hand, its clear that comic Who is my preferred Who!

Elsewhere more established series rattle on very pleasantly. Hinterkind 12 is a fine comic, which is baffling given one character turned up and I was really struggling to think who the hell they where. I'm really looking forward to an eventual re-read of this so I can piece it all together better, but month on month I really enjoy it regardless. Likewise Vertigo's other low selling triumph FBP 14 is stonkin' great. Oh and on a side note love what Vertigo are doing with there cover this month, starting the story with them, it really works on these two titles. Wonder Woman 34 draws it all together brilliantly for an ending I'm well looking forward to for all the sadness it will bring. Next months WW will mark the last regular ongoing DC title I get biting the dust...

Mind with comics this good on my pull list I really should give a damn. Good as these comics are Copperhead 2 is best of the bunch. Its been described as a fairly typical Sci-Fi western down this thread and it is, but done with such panache its a treat and for me the most 2000ad comic I'm reading outside TGG itself. Superb.

Nice haul you should all read the comics I'd do so you'd all be happier... this thread would be a lot duller but you'd all be happier.

Cheers Colin, good to hear you're enjoying Ragnarok too.
Both will be in this week according to my LCS, not sure what the delay was.

Nothing for me this week apart from the delayed stuff, so my wallet gets a well deserved break.

Regarding the new stuff I read over the weekend- Sabrina was by far the best of the bunch.
A truly engaging horror comic with lush artwork by Robert Hack. Hadn't seen his stuff before, but he is absolutely amazing.
If you're a fan of 70's period horror comics or movies, this is for you my friend.

Dammit - now I'm going to have to check this out too. My wallet is complaining.

Aye, jumped on Copperhead myself and gorged on the first two issues during dinner. It is bloody great too, can't imagine trade waiting for it.

I prefered it in The Megazine.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

I read the latest Miracleman. A rather strange episode in some ways.
Did it have to go get rapey? To be fair it's what such a diabolical character would do but I think it's better to leave some things unsaid.
It's an interesting intelligent comic though.

My comic book guy* also suggested the next Marvel Cross-over event (which I declined. The other thing with Fury, star-guy crossing the line, where others wouldn't wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that great either.

He also suggested this month's Batman's jumping on point. This one I accepted, and an interesting enough read it was too.

He also suggested Sabrina. when they get it in. I wasn't particularly taken by the teen comedy with the magic girl and the talking cat and her dappy aunts, but on learning they were taking the character down an horror route... hmmmmm. I think I'll give that a go when it turns up.

*While he has introduced me to a number of comics and title, (som that I continued with, some that I didn't) it was my turn to introcude him to something. Looks like there'll be another subsriber to the Partworks Judge Dredd volumes...
