Now my microwave combi oven has stopped working (Yes I've changed the fuse AND tried using different sockets)

Ah, but have you tried turning it off and then back on again?

<ducks ....>

The Doctor Alt 8

Done that. also 1/ changed the fuse.

2/ changed the socket.   It's dead Jim!

Silly question, but are the sockets working? If not, it might be a breaker.

Okay, have you tried kicking the living daylights out of it, hammering it with a sledgehammer, running it over with a steamroller and then dropping a low yield tactical nuclear device on it?  Then turning it back on again?

And now I have a letter from HM Revenue & Customs asking me to prove that mother had paid the right amount of tax. How the F**k do I prove that?

It might be an idea to gather any relevant documents, such as tax returns, payment receipts, or correspondence with HM Revenue & Customs. Make sure to reach out to the bloodsuckers, explain the situation, and ask for guidance on what specific information they require to resolve this matter. They should be able to provide you with a clear outline of the required documentation and the appropriate channels through which to submit them. Also, what does another person's private financial doings have to do with you?

Or, you can tell them you've asked Derek Acorah and he says everything's fine and that HMR&C actually owe your mother £17,364.58p - but, as this has nothing to do with you, you'll magnanimously allow them to keep it.

Get a solicitor. Seriously. I was the executor of my mother's will, and I tried to sort out her estate myself for about three months before giving up and getting a solicitor to do it. Even if there isn't a will, if there's any money in the estate at all, it will be worth it.

Whatever assets/money are in the estate will be used to settle any outstanding debts. You shouldn't be liable for any debts that the estate can't cover. If there's enough money, the estate also bears the cost of the funeral. A solicitor will also handle any HMRC queries, calculate any inheritance tax liabilities (which the estate also pays if there are any... but almost no normal person's estate gets hit for inheritance tax).

You can also stipulate that any money in the estate can also be put towards the solicitor's costs. It'll all eat away at whatever there is, but the alternative is blundering through a legally complex and specialist process with some potentially very expensive pitfalls... as I fairly quickly realised.

All I did was bundle up as much of my mother's paperwork as I could find, arranged it all into chronological order by year, and handed it over. They did the rest.

Mother HAD no assets How do you prove a negative? And they know she is dead. That's why they contacted me.  >:(

Then I'd get on to Citizen's Advice to see if you can get some free legal advice. As I said, this stuff can be complex and specialist — trying to navigate it without proper advice is monstrously stressful and borderline incomprehensible, as I discovered.

So my passport arrived today.   Any recommendations for a bank? I need a bank account.

If you want big reliable High St bank with slightly more ethics than the rest of the bastards, try Cooperative.

Someone once pointed out that UK bank logos used to forewarn you just how nasty they could be:
  • Barclays: vulture
  • NatWest: quasi-swastika
  • Midland Bank: a griffin with very scary talons
  • Lloyds: Dick Turpin's horse

3 out of the 4 catalogues mother had has cancelled her account and have dropped the payment of the balance she owed. Except Very. They sent a solicitors letter wanting payment!

Can't get a bank account because I don't have any documents supporting the fact that I live at this address... Unless I get a polling card anytime soon... can't really wait until April.

Well now... Finally managed to be accepted for a bank account...

But only because I got a council tax letter in my name saying that I now owe £448.72

And another latter saying that as my mothers executor I owe £598.30 in council tax for her.

And another letter DWP demanding repayment of £407.00

And another letter from mothers private insurance demanding repayment of £1800

THERE IS NO MONEY.

mothers life insurance can't be found and even if it was it wouldn't cover all this.

The landlord wants me to leave ASAP as he claims he is selling up & retiring.

I don't even have the money to see to my mothers remains...

Happy birthday to me eh?
