General / Slough Feg
« on: 11 April, 2014, 07:05:08 PM »
Ok I been doing a bit of a Slaine re-read.

One thing that I have never been quite sure of is...how do you pronounce "Slough" as in "Slough Feg" or "Slough Trott"?

Is as per the town Slough between London and Reading or is it "sloff" as in rhymes with cough?

Or something else. Any views? Has Pat Mills said anything about it?

I just love this period of Slaine that you are hitting now. You have some great stuff ahead of you in the 100 Progs or so...Tomb of Terror, Spoils of Annwn and Slaine the King. Enjoy.

(I love the stuff you have just gone through as well).

In my opinion Slaine up to the of the King is just some of the best stuff ever in the Prog and the art...Belardnelli, McMahon, Fabry..its just a succession of greats. (And lets not forget the stuff by David Pugh, Mike Collins, Mark Farmer either and Angie Kincaid either).

A really strong line up at present. I am enjoying all the strips.

Jaegir seems more to have  a far more interesting premise than previous Rogue spin offs like the 86ers.

Outlier - I'm not sure what it is but I really like this even though it seems fairly straight forward so far. I am waiting for a big twist.

Sinister Dexter: Sorry but the low point of the strip, it should have been Tarantino does SAMCRO but it feels like a filler story from ACTION in the 70s.

I am interested to know why you have picked this out as the low point of the strip. It seems like a fairly standard Sinister Dexter to me, although the conversation about how many  times they have been captured  is verging on self parody.

General / Downlode Tales - Question
« on: 08 April, 2014, 10:36:57 PM »
I have just been reading the Downlode Tales floppies. They are great, but can anyone remember why these stories were billed as Downlode Tales and not Sinister Dexter? Sure there are a few that don't feature the duo but once it gets into the swing of things with the plot to track down Demi's killer they are central to it.

Also the last one in the 3rd floppy, The Off-Lode Experience isn't even set in Downlode.

I have been biting my lip trying to stay out of this, but I can no longer.

I actually like Finn.  There I said it.

As to comparisons between Finn and Slaine...hmmm

So one is written by Pat Mills, has a talk dark protagonist who has a thing for his goddess, who goes around getting into fights and is battling ancient aliens / gods who want to enslave mankind. And the other one is Slaine.

Yes really like Simon Davis take on this and the layouts are amazing. I especially liked the way the background of page 1 flows into page 2 and the way Sinead and Quaslime frame page 5.

BTW his name is "Kark" not "Karn"

Personally I would start at the beginning. Those early tails of Slaine and Ukko making their way back to his tribe set everything up. The art is great too - Belardinelli and McMahon. The early stories are collected in Warriors Dawn.

I would not miss out Time Killer or Slaine the King either. For me Glenn Fabry is the definitive Slaine artist.

The was a recent thread on this called "Getting into Strontium Dog and Slaine" - you should check out the opinions on there.

I am, BTW re-reading The Horned God right now. I have the original 3 book Fleetway edition - I bought them because the printing was a bit dark in the Prog - so defo seek out a good quality TPB for the Horned God.

Well, Hell Trekkers is getting good, Dredd is doing just fine, Rogue Trooper ended with a bit of an anti climax (although I've just seen that he's due to return soon), and Stainless Steel Rat is chugging along.

Have to say though, ACE Trucking Company is not my cup of tea at all. Found I'm skipping almost all of it. Can't put my finger on it, but I'm finding it very dull and difficult to get into.

I always loved the Stainless Steel Rat and Ace Trucking. Both were good fun and had great art by Carlos and Massimo respectively.

On the back of the 2000AD serialisation I went and bought all the SSR books, which were great and well worth a read, although I never could get on with the fact that the slippery Jim on the covers of those looked nothing like Carlos' version (black hair I ask you!!!)

The last series of Ace Trucking was one too far though in my opinion. The format had totally changed at that point and it just didn't have the same feel. I seem to remember reading that Wagner & Grant had wanted to end it earlier and hadn't really wanted to do the last series.

As for Hell Trekkers...sorry never liked it.

I am very excited to be posting my first ever Prog review and what a great Prog it was.

Dredd - really liking this. It seems odd that Max Blixen would say what he did to Erika knowing the Judges were listening, so may be he is working for them.

Outlier - a new thrill that has hit the ground running. I like Karl Richardson's art and think he seems to be quite under rated. I though he did a good job on Grey Area and is continuing that here. As to the story, I think it is good, but actually there does not seem to be as much mystery about this as you would have though from the first couple of pages of the opening episode.

Also I am assuming this is a one shot story given it is called Outlier and not something like Carcer: Outlier (and given Outlier is the name of the ship not the protagonist).

Slaine - this just so good - it is like it used to be back when it started. I agree with Pictsy in that I am not sure if that is just down to the change in artist or whether it is the writing but either way I am loving it in a way I have n't loved Slaine for a while.

One question on it though - didn't Slaine defeat the Formorians as some point? Just a bit surprised to see Quagslime again. I have lost sight of the continuity a bit, so would be grateful for any one to fill me in on this.

Sinister Dexter - as good as always.

Jaegir - interesting to see things from the Norts' point of view. Especially loved the bit where Grigoru is giving covering fire on Nu Earth. Just imagine how that would normally have been portrayed in Rogue Trooper.

Take it they rescued Coulson. Was there a reveal about how he came back to life?

Sort of, more of a tease, but an intriguing one.

I rather liked this episode, first time I've said that about this series.

Ok so any chance of telling me what it was? I managed to see the bit in the next episode's "previously" bit that SHIELD planted a false memory in his head about his recovery but was that it?

I'm with you there Jim but I miss Ron even more.

And even more than that I miss Bolland :'(

(But he wasn't really the guy for these kind of stories..so a bit off topic...but even so he is the one I miss the most).
