I think this is a great idea. People tend to forget that Leslie Nielsen was a 'straight' actor for far more years than he was a comedic one, and his ability to deadpan his way through the hailstorm of gags that was Police Squad/Naked Gun/Airplane is a huge part of the appeal.

It's funny, I could have sworn I remembered there being a Naked Gun reboot a few years ago with Steve Carell, but I can find no evidence of it, so I must have imagined it. Perhaps I was getting mixed up with his Get Smart. Liam Neeson is much better casting anyway, for the reasons Jim stated.

It actually pains me he was never bond. I would have taken him over Craig, except I do love Casino.

Also the writing in all the Bond films after that has been a mess so maybe he dodged a bullet

Fair play to him. He has a lot in common with Leslie Nielson if you ask me. Not only can he be a serious actor in serious settings, but he can also be a serious actor in ludicrous settings, which makes them all the more ludicrous, and funny for that matter.

He has a quick turn in Atlanta, starring as himself that is very very darkly funny.

Naked Gun, Airplane, and Police Squad! are all great - but ruined Forbidden Planet for me.

I have a really soft spot for many a parody movie, I, er, even quite enjoyed Scary Movie 2 (hey, it's got Tim Curry, David Cross, Chris Elliot, Anna Farris and Anna Richter in supporting roles!), but I'm not sure that Liam Neeson is the right man for the job here. I hope I'm wrong, and I do like Neeson a lot in many roles, but yeah, I kind of wish it was someone else. I also hope it's more of a reboot than a remake and while they use the original concept the script / plot is very different, comedy tends to be one of those rare genres that if you try and just remake the original it often pails in comparison - take Mean Girls The Musical for instance, which has some nice enough songs, but hearing twenty year old jokes told by new actors didn't really work for me.

I wonder if it will be a parody of the old cops shows like in the original or update to a parody of recent cop shows. Would be strange to make a parody of 60 year old tv shows which most people haven't seen. But updating it to spoof modern day TV doesn't sound too appealing to me.

I think it would become a different thing then. A Touch Of Cloth was in a similar vein, parodying Scandi noir and its UK imitators in a ZAZ style, but it wasn't The Naked Gun, because the source material was different.

Something like Bosch is just a razor's width away from parody. The only thing holding it together seems to be Titus Welliver's self-belief.
