How important is the 2000ad cover?

The inside backpage of the current prog (1335) got me thinking about this. The picture of Dredd and Orlok, by Bolland is great, and the red background for me makes the image really striking. On a magazine shelf in a news agents, I feel that this would really stand out.

In my mind, the cover of each Prog is only really important for attracting new or casual readers. It's the first impression.

Imagine you have never read 2000ad or the meg before, and have no knowledge of any of the characters (where have you been?). Blocking all this information from your mind, look back over all the covers from 2000ad, the meg, and other spin off publications (use the cover story pages on this site-link below).

Which single cover stands out above all others to you? Is this the cover that would make you pick up the prog for the first time, or bring you back if you were a lapsed reader? Why? What is it about this cover that caught your eye?

As I said in another thread - the only great Megazine cover recently has been the one below.

(Wake, there's no cover voting boxes for Volumes 2 & 3 on the Cover Story pages...)

I don't think that the "next week" page is a good use of space - a 1/4 page panel (or smaller) on the Nerve Centre would be better & I'd prefer the artwork to remain a mystery until the prog is published.

Going to have a look at recent 2K covers now to see which stands out the most.http://www.2000adonline.com/covers/megazine/thumbnails/4.14_thumb.jpg">

totally.
its part of the very fabric that makes us specail.

yes we will buy it every week.
but doesnt it make you tingle a little when its totally awsome.a great cover makes the temptation to read it instantly, so great.

its also a very important vehicle by which sales increase.

,they have been so good recently i have not been opening the envelope until i get the club to sit and enjoy every single thrill powered moment in complete silence.
I AM VERY BUSY!
PJ Maybe and I use the same dictionary, live with it.

NO 2000ad no life!

Generally Contrary

I'd be happy with a plain brown paper cover.  It'd make me feel like I was part of some secret comic book elite.

However, another part of me wants the whole world to know how good 2000AD can be (rather than hounding the uncovered acolytes of Tharg from town, with flaming brands, pitchforks and cries of Geek! Geek! Geek!), and you could get close to that is through attracting new squaxx with striking (violent and controversial?) covers.

IndigoPrime

Hmm, apparently, many on this thread can't count (which _single_ cover). Anyway, I'd have to say the one below, because it rocks. One of my faves from my early days of collecting 2000 ADhttp://www.2000adonline.com/covers/2000ad/thumbnails/640thumb.jpg">

Odd,
But if you could ONLY pick ONE, which one would it be, and why?

DD,
Yeah, but that's the cover you pick because of your feelings towards it. In my original post, I asked which cover would you choose if you had never read 2000ad before, and knew nothing about any of the characters, and for that matter, the contents of the comic.
Cheers
