For the mods: as we are undergoing a barrage of spam flack at the moment, what are we supposed to do? Do you need us to report this stuff as it appears so you can delete individual messages and users, or are you combing the forum as a matter of course and it's all in hand?
I notice some is disappearing, so thanks for that! Good luck as you go over the top into spam mans land.

Yeah I was wondering about this. I did start reporting them but then wondered as I started to see things disappearing that they were probably all 'We know already leave us alone so we can sort it' so stopped.
Seemed to be in hand last night be noticed a few more this morning.
Exactly the same here, Colin. I've been reporting all- but then saw them disappearing and thought it all under control- but back this morning. Dont want to overwhelm the lovely mods, but dont knowing they need the reports or not. Clarification would be appreciated.

Aye, 'tis a pain in the robo-derriere.
I think we are currently clear - they do like resurrecting old threads, don't they?

Whoops you spoke to soon. There's some very Original Art in the 2000ad Original Art thread alas!

Excellent stuff - will continue to do so and thanks to you Mods for wombling the forum!
p.s. the reason why spam and phishing emails contain so many 'typos' (https://www.businessinsider.com/why-nigerian-scam-emails-are-obvious-2014-5) - clue: they're not typos, they're put there on purpose.

Ten reasons why you won't believe red-hot mods destroy hard wombles!
Arh I remember the days when being a womble on Wimbledon Common and picking things up was a thing of innocence...
Hey - no fair, you're getting rid of spam faster than I can report it!
(and you're giving me a 20 second limit between spam reports)

Argh, now you've done it. You see, I have a little song I sing to myself everytime I hang up the washing on the rack in our kitchen- and every time i find myself singing it i get the urge to post it to the Board. Much like the "Judge Dredd theme tune" i had as a kid ("Judge Dredd, Judge Dredd, his costume is a brilliant red", etc- which prompted a board member to draw me a picture) this one is firmly fixed in my head as the "washing song". And now, by mentioning wombles, you've brought about its manifestation here.
(To the tune of The Wombles theme song)
Underpants, overpants, pants that are free
Pants left on Wimbledon Common for me.
Making good use of the pants that we find
The pants that the everyday folk leave behind.

Without wishing to sound paranoid, is it coincidence teh latest forum member is Sim.Bot!
More seriously, how do they get by - thought you had to be granted privileges to post to stop that sort of thing?
Not sure how this is happening. In theory, any new member only has the means to post in a very limited number of threads.

I guess a few things to check would be (in order of probability):
- Forum software: is it updated? Is it secure?
- Admin accounts: are they all secure?
- Server: is it secure?
At the bottom of here it says SMF 2.0.15, but a quick check of simplemachines.org says that the newest stable release is 2.0.17.
Some more just in. Reported!
I'm no tech wizz, but I'd say the "firewall" needs repointing or somesuch.
Similar issue being discussed here back in 2015: Admin approval of new members issue (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=541676.0).
TL;DR - it says to change the passwords on all admin. accounts. (And to make sure your forum software is running the latest version.)

Not to cast aspersions but on Sim.Bot's profile it has him/her/they listed as an Administrator. Either this is genuine or it may be how the bots are getting into the forum.
I really don't know and if Sim.Bot is genuine then i apologize!
Cheers
I have a suggestion to make and it is when you create a profile that you must first type in a random generated letters for you to continue. This is done mostly to stop bots and not humans.

Oh, and their account was created the same day this thread was. Chicken or egg?
And now Russian well drilling spam - I guess it makes a change from hot teens (e.t.c.). Seems like a rather niche service to spam though. I'm guessing that stack of links may be unwholesome and nothing to do with Well Drilling, I''m certainly not gonna click em to find out.

Yeah, right? It's Bengal Water Wells this year - they should get with the times!
for the love of Grud, is there nothing that can be done to stop this?
We're clearing it up when it arrives. The web team has been notified, but the forum is not a priority, and there are loads of other things they're dealing with ATM. Please just keep messaging mods/admins if something doesn't get spotted, or mention infringing user accounts here.
As soon as it is seen it is removed, if any of you see something in a thread for more than a couple of hours - report it, please.

Can I just add my thanks to the mods/technical monkeys (in their hats) who are defending the forum from all this. Hope you get to the bottom of it soonest, and we can go back to discussing the wholesome delights of 2000AD, cheese-based IT solutions, bumsex girl, whether we want to look at women's underware and all the other amazing things this brilliant place has provided over the decades.

I would also like to thank the mods.
I think I should point out that when I usually try to log on here with my VPN still on I usually get notified that I have been permabanned. Then I have to turn off the VPN and clear my cookies before I can log in again. This hasn't happened in a while now, and I'm only after realising. Is this useful information?

Just means the bots are closing in on the aggregate tastes of the Forum demographic. Expect Sally James, Nigel Kneale and Fighting Fantasy gamebooks to feature heavily.
I can't imagine how the likes of Quatermass could be adapted for that kind of... (suddenly remembers the existence of the 1985 film, "Lifeforce").
Ah.
Never mind.
Ah well, on the plus side, the pornspam seems to be back to the more salacious Benny Hill kind ...

Very suspicious Russian language post in the Top Dredd Epics Results thread. By a new user with one post. I wouldn't click on any of that, if I were you!

More on "BARGAINS/DEALS THREAD (?)"
Much appreciation for the mods handling this craziness.
Think I got that earlier today... Just checked the last three pages and I didn't see anything inappropriate there.
Obviously, if any of you find any that is there for more than 24hrs let us know.

They're all bots anyway, so: yep. I can't recall having ever deleted a standard account from here. (Even bans are vanishingly rare.)
Yes I know those pesky bots.
one just turned up in last movie watched
And also on the RIP thread.
I don't know, I flounce off in a huff for a while and when I bob back in for a quick lurk there's somebody apparently selling Russian magic beans on the "Altered Carbon cancelled by Netflix" thread and the offer of fake Swiss passports on the "Current TV Boxset Addiction" thread.
I liked it better when I was the board's resident pain in the arse...
It amuses me how all these new profiles offering teen sex pics are all "never nude"
I thought Orlok was dead, but there is definitely infiltration by Sov filth columnists on the board.
With Covid, Block Mania may be making a comeback.
I'M FIGHTING FOR ROWDY YATES BLOCK, WHO YOU SUPPORTING???
I like to alert the mods with the "report" button.
Hopefully I give them a smile with many Monty Python Spam, spam, spam, eggs, coffee and spam quotes in the message field.

Alright, I've had a couple of Zoom sessions with beers, and tried to get to sleep, but your Judge Dredd theme tune is stuck in my head and I had to look it up.
Lyrics, if I remember correctly:
'Judge Dredd, Judge Dredd,
His costume is a brilliant red,
He always knows when danger's about;
He always knows just when to shout:
JUDGE DREDD!'
You might think that everyone's forgotten this, but it's been kind of an earworm, albeit with my own tune, for me since you first said it, and it must be about 15 years ago. Is there any way you can let me know the real tune?
