Yeah, I wanted the Flinty cover so was waiting for it to turn up in Forbidden Planet, but no show and now sold out in the 2000AD Shop?

I believe the reason for the connection between comics and more adult fare is that stocking comics allowed adult bookshops to avoid certain licencing laws? Sure I sawsomething along those lines amny years back - so the pron came first if you pardon the expression

As for comic book guys,my nemesis was Jason in late 80s Nostalgia and Comics.....

Film & TV / Re: Dr Who: The Star Beast

If the Star Beast is anything to go by, RTD2 is going to be very much like RTD1

It reminded me why RTD Who is so mhuch better than Chibnalls - he understands that character is shown through dialogue and action not "how doess that make you feel?" conversations.  Theres a bounce to it Who hasnt had for years

It also reminded me why I fell out with RTD1. He has absolutely no interest in tidying up any plot points - loosy goosey catchy meepy.  Just a minute or two devoted to the plot nd beefing up some of the connective tissue (the Doctor realising the Meep was a risk, the Meep - or reining in destruction - the giant fiery blasts across London just reverse themselves - any chance of RTD explaining the curent state of the post Flux universe were obviously very optimistic!

He also has the devil in him - the Trans angle was handled really well, until it wasnt.  The Doctor cant understand "letting go" because he is "male presenting"? Really? Way to undo the good work up til then in fitting the theme into the story.  When you have Gallifrey Gals, Council of Geeks and MR TARDIS himself raising their eyebrows in unison with the Nerdrotics of this world, you may have just given in to your button pushing impulse a little too far!

So, it seems RTD will be picking up where he left off, which was to be honest me cheering him out the door.  I'm sure there will be some good individual episodes, but RTDs wilful "plot is for M**g-M**gs" will likely just grate on me, sadly.

Oh, and I do think the best Star Beast material was the stuff cut out - the Wrarth Warriors sitting down for tea and cake was prime RTD you would have thought, but again, the plot is stretched as thin as it can be to fit around the Doctor/Donna stuff

My understanding from memory is that Wagner and Mills had worked up a pitch to the Beeb with those Early WDr Who Weekly stories in the late 70s, which were rejected (as too unfilmable?), but there was enough interest for them to ask Mills for more pitches, hence the Space Whale?

Dez Skinn, upon hearing that Mills and Wagner had some unused Who stuff approached them to do the comic strip for the Weekly

I like Anna;s art in principle, but man, those identical faces really stuck out for me this time - the panel with the clone police was unintentionally hilarious

Yeah, I echo the "get well soon" messages for Conrad - take your time, but really do hope it comes back

Gone from checking every day for a new upload to every week, and would be the saddest thing if we didnt get any more - by far my most enjoyed 2000AD related content of current times and thats with it still in the tail end of the dark days!

got to agree that in principle, a "defund the police" parallel story is a good starting point - one Wagner and Grant would/could have had fun with.

The danger is the Garth Ennis ending - he did it with the Democracy storyline and with Helter Skelter -- the citizens should know their place and strong men are always required to pull your fat out the fire when the next bogey man comes along.

I;d say I'll be interested in what comes of it, but I;ve not been enthused by any of Williams Dredds, so I'll hope for an occasional Wagner or N-AI-Mand getting his algorythms synced up again

IIRC Barney is missing that story in its listing (possibly another story as well - seeed quite a short entry from memory?)

My guess for Gronk Affair is that it has been bumped into Vol 4 to fit in all the missed stories, which is fine really for the purposes of being chronological going forward

Quote from: Max Headroom on 21 September, 2023, 02:54:02 PMThanks, Dash. Are you sure about the 1980 Sci-Fi Special?? Nothing Strontium Dog listed for this on Barney. Maybe another text-only story?

Aha!  Vol 3, now available for pre order seems to have picked up all the missing stories, so credit where credit is due, that at least catches it all up - not sure about not using a contemporary image for the Webship exclusive, but maybe thats a "not the final cover" type situation?

I;d be using the "Never Surrender" cover myself

Only read the two Dredds so far

The "present" one was fine and worked for me though I felt it had an unnecessary wrinkle in making the guy a mutant - just have him be a Wally Squader would work a lot smoother (though ight make it more like an existing story?)

the 2099 one was also decent - the retro art is very well done - mybe setting it in 2079-2089 might make it more credible to have that many cops still wondering about

The Rogue Trooper I;ve read before - the story is ery well done, though I still think a bit bland in comparison to original Rogue - the art is a big OOF for me though - design wise, everything looks ten times worse than the Gibbons original designs for Rogue, Norts and Southers etc. Theres a reason why all of the covers for that series ignored the look of Rogue inside

WEirdly, I havent read Surfer or Spector... nt sure whats going on there, as Wagner is my top tier reason for still reading.. maybe dont want to exhaust his work when he inevitably retires for good.

Havent read the Steve Sampson interview yet, but if it isnt just cut and paste quotes from GQ magazine I wll be sorely disappointed.

Oof!  Barney is 3 years out of date - I know the feeling as the last 3 years all feel like a bit of a gap - if I had the passwords, I wouldnt mind updating it as it would give me an excuse to go over the last 3 years and see if I can make some of it stick

Partying like its 2102 in Dredd.

I wish Tharg had pointed out the prog numbers from the last Asher story as I can't recall the exact details of where it was all left - Dredd is already onto Asher, Asher is mobbing it up, but its a bit hazy - is Barney up to date enough to track em down?  As ever the KenPT Droid is pretty close to that Classic taste, and I appreciate a reference to ShepNerd, being one.  That said, I do feel the calibration of Dredd Softy/Bastard/Wanker scale seems to have been turned a bit too far to Wanker after some complaints about Softy setting coming through in the N-AI_mand bot.  Burning the corpse is fun in the moment, but is a 90s/00s flavour that jars a bit with the 70s/80s stylings elsewhere.

Portals & Black Goo is working better than Tomlinsons shorts, though as Barrington says, the "Racism" angle is a bit weird. We could presume that the story would reveal that the myths are all just that and the monsters arent "comin over here and taking our entrails", but we've kind of established that they are?

Still at least theres a theme and I think thats the Void in Void Runners - whats it all about?  Drugs are cool?  Dunno, the comparisons to Ace Trucking arent putting this into teh best light - I could see a fun Ace Trucking story based rouhghly around the same plot points, but it would be half the length and twice the fun?  It;s OK, but feels a bit stretched thin.

Hershey is dead to me (literally)!

Azimuth - not too disappointed that it ties into Sun Dex as it wasnt that out of the blue, but I must have lost track of Sin Dex - wasnt Sinister still after Dexter and co and part of the Creep fakes?  Again, could do with going back if Barney has up to date enough info....
