: New Essential Judge Dredd graphic novel line launches in September
: IndigoPrime 09 January, 2020, 11:23:56 PM
The ultimate introduction to the ultimate lawman – Essential Judge Dredd launches this September!

Rebellion Publishing is pleased to announce a new graphic novel line focusing on the indispensable stories of the greatest lawman of the future, beginning with a blistering tale where the terrorists want only one thing – democracy!

Perfect for new readers and retailers, the Essential Judge Dredd line of graphic novels will focus on the key stories that have established and confirmed Dredd’s place as one of the most complex and nuanced characters in comics.

The first collection in the new line, Essential Judge Dredd: America, includes work by John Wagner (A History of Violence), Garth Ennis (Preacher), Alan Grant (Batman), Colin MacNeil (Judge Dredd), John Higgins (Watchmen), John M Burns (Modesty Blaise), and Jeff Anderson (Transformers).

Out in September 2020 and retailing at £19.99 / $25, this 160-page paperback in larger format (276mm x 210mm) collects the America storyline, which focuses on the lives of ordinary citizens living under Justice Department’s despotic system.

Time drew childhood friends America Jara and Bennett Beeny apart, but when they reunite Beeny discovers America has become involved with the terrorist organisation ‘Total War’. This dark and complex tale is considered to be one of the best stories to ever come out of the Judge Dredd universe.

Now contextualised with contemporarily-thematic stories, the collection will also feature new colour by renowned Watchmen colourist John Higgins.

The series continues in November 2020 with Essential Judge Dredd: Origins, the unprecedented epic that sees Wagner and Ezquerra return to tell the origin story of their greatest creation.

First appearing in 1977, Wagner and Ezquerra’s fascist future cop has become the byword for dystopian law enforcement and has inspired generations of artists, writers, filmmakers, and musicians. Patrolling the streets of Mega-City One on America’s Eastern seaboard 122 years in the future, Dredd is judge, jury, and executioner in a blackly funny, often challenging, and always riotous satire of ‘law and order’ politics, whose underlying message has only become more relevant in the 21st Century.

Ben Smith, head of Rebellion Publishing, said: “Not only is America one of the most amazing Judge Dredd stories ever told, this incredibly prescient look at the demands society must make for democracy and what a state will do to protect itself couldn’t be more contemporary. This is not only the ideal first story for any reader new to Dredd, it’s something everyone should read in this year of all years. Make sure you read it before you vote, citizens!”

Interesting, and feels primarily targeted at the US ?
In these reprint-heavy times, doubtful I’d pick anything up, but keen to see how the (B&W) classics fare when coloured by John Higgins. Should turn the heads of those US readers 😜

Sounds lovely, and interested to see John Higgins colourise classic stories.

Am I wrong in saying that September is the month that the 2000AD Ultimate Collection comes to an end?

Unless someone can tell me what "Now contextualised with contemporarily-thematic stories" means, I guess there's nothing different here?

Lorenzo - without knowing exactly which stories are included, I imagine that the 'America' volume contains more than the core America Beeny tales - take a look at the list of creators:

The first collection in the new line, Essential Judge Dredd: America, includes work by John Wagner (A History of Violence), Garth Ennis (Preacher), Alan Grant (Batman), Colin MacNeil (Judge Dredd), John Higgins (Watchmen), John M Burns (Modesty Blaise), and Jeff Anderson (Transformers).

Now, to me that says we are getting much more than in the earlier collection.

Yep, what you're not getting is The Complete America; sounds like more of a newbie-friendly 'primer' collecting a bunch of Democracy-based Dredds.

Jokes aside, I think it will be a lovely way to hook more readers in, and to let lapsed readers like myself catch up on some of the little stories and pieces I may not have picked up yet, or got to in my collecting of the Complete Judge Dredd volumes.

Really looking forward to the other volumes being announced.

This looks like a serious attempt to crack the US nut, more power to Rebellion's elbow.  Intrigued to see Higgins on the crayons, any chance he'll take a crack at unCraddocking Fading of the Light?  See also: The Pit.

(Acknowledging that Alan was working at the dawn of digital colouring in the UK, and the limitations that implies, and aware of the the dangers of tinkering with works of art, but I'd still like to see II able to stand between I and III with its head held high.  But yes, I'm being mean).

It does feel mean, but it would be an interesting experiment if they did decide to re-colour some of the work.

Mind you, Colin MacNeil in Black and White would be equally lovely.

The 'larger size' is current Prog size, so that'll be a draw for some.

In a 160-page book that includes (presumably, going by the creator line-up) the likes of Twilight's Last Gleaming and Democracy Now, I'd be very surprised if you get anything other than America Book I in there.

Yeah I did see that line-up. When I read it the first time, I took that to be a list of creators for the new series, not just the first book. My bad.

It would be really useful for us nerds if Rebellion included a list of Prog/Meg numbers when they release compilations like this. Everyone would know straight away what they are getting.

One guess would be its timed to Best of 2000ad. So if you liked this then try that type thing?

The 'larger size' is current Prog size, so that'll be a draw for some.

Given that some big books have broken the US market with this type of size this could link to the above as well?

Whilst we're talking about content. Does anyone actually know what the difference is between

(https://d1w7fb2mkkr3kw.cloudfront.net/assets/images/book/mid/9781/7810/9781781083703.jpg) and (https://d1w7fb2mkkr3kw.cloudfront.net/assets/images/book/mid/9781/9054/9781905437580.jpg)

I just noticed the US TPB version (left) has 160 pages but the UK version has 144. Is there a covers gallery or something extra in the US book?

This sounds like a good move to make Dredd accessible to new readers, particularly those outside the UK. On  Reddit, and presumably other social media sites, every second thread seems to ask "Where should I start with reading Dredd?". Saying "just read the Essential Judge Dredd series" is a lot better than referring people to book 5 of a 30+ book series, a book that features Dredd as an antagonist, and a handful of other books (in their many and varying editions).

I wonder if the missing speech bubble in America 2 (see 'The Incomplete Case Files' thread in the 'Other Reviews' section for more details) could possibly make a comeback for this new version? Completeness is everything, after all!

Colin MacNeil on the cover of Origins. Wonder which story or stories they'll add. Perhaps The Spirit of Christmas as the mega collection volume?

I wouldn't mind Blood And Duty. A bit of background to Dredd and the first Rico.

Pretty certain that it'll just be Higgins recolouring/remixing his own work on Revolution.

I don't know what the likelihood would even be that they still have the black and white scans for America II and The Pit in the archives.
: Re: New Essential Judge Dredd graphic novel line launches in September
: Bolt-01 22 February, 2020, 09:08:26 AM
just a thought regarding the colouring - If Rebellion really wanted to recolour the files but did not have access to the linework, would not Alan be the first port of call?

I know that from a lettering perspective I keep a 'build' version of all pages archived to allow for error spotting/revisions.

I'd be surprised if Alan didn't think on for that situation.

That being said - these would likely be a mountain of floppy disks & zip drives...

Brilliant!  Although I think you could have a version of that conversation which acknowledges that Craddock was working in the very infancy of that technology, and things have moved on.

If I was Craddock, they could say what they liked about decades-old work, so long as they slung me a few quid for the scans.

TBF, I’m not saying Rebellion would approach it like that. They’re not idiots. But ultimately, you’d be asking someone if they still had files, on the basis you want to overwrite their efforts because they’re no longer considered acceptable. That’s going to sting however you approach it.

Personally, I do wish B+W scans existed for everything, by magic. I’d love to see Zenith IV without the colour (and amended by Yeowell as necessary). One for the list when I win millions on the lottery, obv.

Hmmm, Apoc as a standalone without Block Mania?  If it is recoloured without those pitiful IDW covers then it has that going for it (I mean seriously, consider the quality of Ezquerra, Bolland, Smith, Gibbons, McMahon or Dillon artwork to choose from then look at the GN cover!).  At least Rebellion have got that bit right.

It must have Block Mania, or McMahon, Dillon, Bolland and Smith wouldn't be credited, surely?

Fair point.  I missed that bit.  It was the Amazon description which mentions it as a 'standalone'.  Suggested to me that it was just the Ezquerra part.

Just goes to show how daft an idea it is trusting Amazon.

When people mention Alan I like to consider what D'Israeli and King Carlos were doing around the same time - as you say, it was the dawn of digital colouring in the UK.  Some went on to improve their craft (Carlos) while others realised colouring wasn't there thing at that time and went down a different path (D'Israeli has a blog post about how he rethought his career trajectory).

John Higgins is great, though I kind of miss the way he used to draw Dredd.  Granite-jawed and gimlet-eyed, he was the perfect man to intimidate Gort Hyman in a quiet and calculated manner.

Flipped through a copy of America at a book today. I must say. Damn fine stuff. Letter from a democrat and Revolution got a really nice paint job.
