: Dave Evans, R.I.P.
: Mike Carroll 07 May, 2021, 11:32:09 AM
It's heartbreaking to report that long-time messageboard member Dave Evans -- AKA Bolt-01 -- has died.

Dave was more than just a tremendous friend -- he was exceptionally caring, funny, intelligent, generous, loyal, talented and warm-hearted. As co-editor of some fantastic and influential zines such as FutureQuake, Zarjaz, Something Wicked and Dogbreath, Dave helped nurture many new creators, and he was delighted that so many went on to attain full-time careers in the comics industry.

I first met Dave at a Dreddcon in Oxford back in the early 2000s and we became instant friends. I've never had anything but a fantastic time in his company, and over the years Leonia and I got to know and love his amazing family, too.

I'll write more later, maybe -- this is not easy. Dave was one of those people whose presence just lifted your heart and the thought of not seeing him again is almost unbearable.

So long, Dave. It's been an absolute honour to have been your friend.

-- Mike

Jesus. That's terrible news. Bolt wasn't someone I'd ever met or interacted with much but his enthusiasm for the comics and creators he worked with seemed boundless.

My love and sympathy to his family and friends.

This is gutting. Bolt (as I will always think of him) was just the loveliest bloke, both on- and off-line. I did a lot of small-press work for a time, and he was such a pleasure to deal with - always enthusiastic, encouraging and seemingly genuinely overjoyed to recieve new artwork. His enthusiasm for Tooth, and comics in general, was infectious and heartfelt. It was so lovely to see his chunky inks back in the sketch comps recently, too. Hard to take in.  :'(

So long, Bolt. Thanks for everything, and see you on the Doghouse some time.

Jesus. I've so gutted and don't know what to say.

Firstly my thoughts and love to his family for whom the loss just be unbearable.

I've met Dave a few times at conventions and we've drank, chatted and laughed. He was always kind, smart and honest - just a lovely bloke. He's done so much for fandom, he was an endless delight here and his art was always something that made me smile.

This is a tough one and I know it will impact on some many of you so much more. Just so sad.

This is crushingly sad.

Dave was one of the nicest people I've ever met, as well as a supremely talented artist, letterer and editor. He was always astonishingly generous with his time and never asked for anything in return.

No tribute to Dave could possibly exaggerate what a great guy he was.

Dropping back from long term lurking to drop my Condolences to all of Bolt's family and friends.
Much like Mike I met Dave at Dreddcon and probably drank far too much beer over the next few years with him at various cons, Bristol and others.

I last saw him briefly at the 40th and my big regret is that I was feeling so crappy that i left early and didn't get chance to catch up with people properly.

Rest In Peace feller.

This is awful news.
I've not been on this board long but his knowledge of and passion for comics was obvious to me and he was friendly, helpful and generous. I was very much hoping to meet him in person at Thought Bubble later this year.
Horrible to hear of this and thoughts with his family.

I don't know what to say. Dave has always been a nurturing presence in small press and always lovely to chat to at conventions. No doubt it hasn't sunk in for myself or any of the fellow comic readers/creators who have interacted with him over the years but thanks for letting us know, Mike.

Just this minute heard the news. So shocked! Absolutely gutted! First met him when I hit the Cardiff cons as Judge Pal many years back, and instantly taken by what a nice guy he was. I have not been on the board for a long time. But the phone call from his family is the worst thing I have had in a long time.
Dave was and is by a long measure the best friend I have had in my life (to give some context, the best friend from my teenage years  died on Thursday night) I am utterly bereft. I have lost my soul mate. I have always referred to Dave as my comics life partner, without any irony. I loved him and he loved me.
: Re: Dave Evans, R.I.P.
: pauljholden 07 May, 2021, 12:42:19 PM
Utterly devastating.

Dave was one of the sweetest nicest people I knew in comics, and for me Dave defined the best of what comics can be, and he was the small press as far as I was concerned, he'd email occasionally asking if I was available for a cover and if I was I'd never turn him down. Why would you? he was lovely.

I can't imagine the loss his family feels.

First I just want to echo all that’s been said before. Dave was a good friend and genuinely one of the nicest people in the entire world or comics, and he was loved by myself and many others. I was shocked to discover the news recently and i’ll be typing up some of my memories with the amazing fellow later. Nothing but love and affection to all who knew him and the rest of the Evans clan, he brought up three wonderful kids who I am also blessed to call friends. We’ll miss you Dave. Thanks for everything.

Dreadful and deeply shocking news. Sadly I never had the opportunity to meet Dave in person, but he always had a kind and constructive word for my small-press writing, providing helpful advice as I was learning the ropes. He was clearly a font of irrepressible enthusiasm for all things comics. Condolences to all who were close to him.

Bolt was just so, so lovely and the absolute best of us. Utterly selfless, always very kind, super enthusiastic about 2000 AD. His keen eye and nurturing nature will have helped launch loads of careers.

I loved seeing Dave and would always make a beeline for him at cons. I spent many happy hours drinking and chatting with him. This is a sad day for 2000 AD fandom.

My heart goes out to his equally lovely family (his relationship with his daughter was beautiful) and to Richmond, whose post above has just broken me.

I just want you all to know, although I dont post as much, that lots of you really do mean a lot to me and I appreciate you all. I’ll be having a drink to Dave, and the rest of you, tonight.

Oh man. I saw the news on Twitter and had to reactivate my account to post my condolences.

I remember Bolt-01 back in the days of 2000adreview - he was so generous with his words and time. I remember reading Dogbreath in 2004-5ish and thinking it was such a cool tribute to Strontium Dog.

My thoughts are with his family and all that called him friend.

The internet is a funny old place, not least on boards where you so often hide behind pseudonyms. It’s hard to get the measure of a person. I never felt that about Dave. I never met the man, but he always seemed like the best of us. It’s not fair that he’s no longer with us, bar in memory.

Gut-punched.
Was working on a thing with him at the moment and his contribution has gone far beyond just the lettering, much as it has for all the time I've been dabbling in indie comics and had the good fortune to work with him.  Nurturing and patient to a fault.

Godspeed, Dave.

Really can't take this in. Dave was the guy who gave me a chance. He gave a chance to so many. I can say wholeheartedly that I would not be doing what I do for a living if not for Dave. He was a warm, kind, funny and a genuine good guy. A huge presence if the UK scene, both publications and convention scene. Really hard to take this awful news in. Going to miss his warm character at pretty much every convention I've been to. Its just not going to be the same now is it. I'll raise a glass to you mate at the next convention.
Rest in peace Dave and my deepest sympathies to all his family and friends. X

Always such a delightful presence at conventions and at the bar afterwards.
If anyone can tell his family how loved he was by the whole 2000AD community please do.

Give all your loved ones a hug and be kind to them, and yourselves. None of us know what might happen the next day.

: dossa1uk 07 May, 2021, 01:45:03 PM
Dave was kind enough to take a chance on two of my scripts for Zarjaz and Dogbreath. My first published work.

I can’t overemphasise how encouraging that was, and how much of a thrill it was to even be considered, let alone published. I think of all of those other people, all encouraged and enthused by him, from just the excitement of seeing their work in print for the first time, all the way up to finding a way to make it as a career.

That’s a phenomenal legacy.

My deepest condolences to his friends and family, and all in the comics community who are feeling this loss so keenly.

None of it possible if not for you guys. Sometimes I wish I could have told him to his face, though I probably did every time I saw him. Wish I could again.
Whenever I get asked advice in breaking into comics I always, ALAWAYS, recommend Futurequake Press. I was only messaging him the other week too.
Hope you are bearing up well, though obviously that's a stupid thing to say at this time. Despite how divided the comic community can sometime seem, Dave was always a warm, welcoming presence. Really isn't going to be the same.

I return, land-walking fools, to pay grudging tribute to this departing minion of the mighty king fish!

And that's quite enough of that nonsense.

Dave Evans, Bolt-01, was one of the good guys. He was a creative person, down to his DNA, who was unstoppable in his enthusiasm and acceptance of everyone.

He was driven to create his own work. I'm sitting here with a pile of comics: Zarjaz, Dogbreath, Whistler and more. As I opened the bag they were in, I also found a sketch of Tharg that he did, unasked, when sending me some comics. He just loved drawing and telling stories. It didn't matter how many setbacks he encountered. He just kept creating.

I'll never forget the delight on Dave's face when he first showed me the character "Troutmann", a kilted fish-like Stront who teamed up with Whistler and loved to bellow "Never forget the Trout is evil!" I didn't quite know how to react - I was overwhelmed and thrilled that he'd do such a cool, fun thing. I'll always treasure the experience, and always remember the conversation in that student union building in Oxford, where the Dreddcons happened.

And he encouraged others. In accepting collaborators, Dave only ever asked them to share his love for comics. As this thread shows, he mentored and supported so many people.

My love goes out to everyone in our community today. I also send my best wishes to Dan (who I nicknamed Mini-Bolt, leading Dave to take me aside at a con and thank me for including his son in our online banter) and the rest of Dave's family. I cannot imagine what you're going through now.

What a loss to us all. I'm crying at my desk here.

Not really sure what do say about Dave except he will be hugely missed. I feel like I should have known him better than I should, considering, but never once thought there was a time limit on that. Bit of a hammer blow.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends. A really decent and always helpful guy.
His (And Richmonds) comics were great too, I usually buy a bundle of Zarjaz and Dogbreath every year and they always came with a cool sketch by Dave.

Shocking news.  2000AD fandom has lost a great presence with this.  As with others, when I ordered a bunch of fanzines (just about everything 2000AD-related that was available to send) I got a hand-drawn pic included in the box.  Shall have to locate that and keep it somewhere safe (safer) now.

Should have added, my condolences to you too Rich.
I only met Dave the once IRL, but communicated quite a bit for a time over Dogbreath stuff. Terrible thing to lose a good friend and worse when they were as outstanding a person as Dave. As LS says, it is about you too, as well as his family and others who were close- it's crushing and there is no need to feel bad for expressing that.
Personally, I will forever regret letting him down and not having the chance to make up for that because it's the very least he deserved.

It just feels like a complete gut punch.
I only met Bolt a couple of times, with over 7 years between them, but he did still remember me after all that time. He must have known everyone in the industry,  probably worked with half of them too. The fact that the FutureQuake table was a meeting spot for everyone shows how important he was. A true pillar of the industry and one of the nicest people in comics.
My deepest sympathy to all his family and friends.

That's me, third from left. Increasingly accurate depiction.

I haven't seen Dave in a few years. Life kinda gets in the way. The first Lawgiver con back in... 2014, I think?
Extremely weird and unsettling to think I won't run into him at some as-yet-unnanounced, post-Covid DreddShedFredcon. Bad times.

There's far too many old boarders and treasured droids calling me back to this bloody forum by not being around any more. Enough now. Please stop it.

Thoughts are very much with Dave's family and friends. Rich: be kind to yourself today, mate.

He was driven to create his own work. I'm sitting here with a pile of comics: Zarjaz, Dogbreath, Whistler and more. As I opened the bag they were in, I also found a sketch of Tharg that he did, unasked, when sending me some comics.

He sent me a random sketch of Colossus from the X-Men when I bought some copies of Something Wicked once, along with a note wishing us luck putting together the first issue of Hallowscream.

RIP, Bolt.

Before I say anything, just to echo the sentiment that Richmond, this is about you & we are all thinking about you - if there is any way we can help, just reach out to us.

As for the terrible news, I still can't process it- it's a feeble trope that the good die young, but I can't think of a better example  - as others have said, he was the best of us a true diamond.

My Comics fandom flame was kept ignited by Paul Von Scott and Bolt when I met them back at those early Dreddcons - Dave's enthusiasm was infectious and his love for the comics I loved just magnified that love immeasurably.

I'm a pretty socially awkward/anti-social type and knowing that Bolt was at a Con made them unmissable, because I always knew I'd walk out of there feeling  excited about comics and generally feeding off his energy.  Meeting his wonderful kids was always a pleasure too - I'd occasionally walk past the shop in Brum where Dan works and either give him a wave if I saw him in the window or even if I didnt see him there, it would just give me a tiny buzz that I knew that kid and his dad and how golden they were.  I have the cuddly Gronk that Izzy made sitting in my geek room pride of place. Dave was not just a great comics fan and creator, not just a great person, but an amazing father.  My thoughts go out to his family, because losing anyone is a terrible thing, but losing someone as wonderful as Dave so young, I can't imagine.

Dave had messaged me a week back to chase up a story I'd struggled to get started on the art for (Lockdown creating extra work for me and a bout of what I think might have been a fairly mild but fatiguing Long Covid left me struggling to get my mnd back into drawing mode).  As soon as he asked if I was up to try again, I just knew I had to, for him and for myself, because you didn't want to let Dave down, but you knew that the right thing to do was always "Be more Bolt"  - as I said, the enthusiasm was infectious. I'd got myself a plan to timetable it out and was waiting for his "green for go" email....

Because I'm a pretty socially awkward/anti-social type I always felt guilty about not hanging around for after-con drinks and that guilt was almost entirely due to that meaning I didn't really get to know Dave, who I always idly wished I'd made more time to get to know, living in the same town  Knowing that isn't gong to happen, that I'm not going to see his friendly face at the next con....  Richmond, I can only guess from how I feel about him knowing him only casually, how you feel knowing him so well - please take care and as I say, we are here for you.

Man, this hits me hard.

Dave was a big part of my life in that he encouraged me to write and submit scripts to him. He published my first few scripts - only after rejecting several and giving loads of tips and advice from everything to formatting to short script story structure. He agreed happily to letter one of my projects, and was like a father to all of us involved - always offering advice and encouragement.

But most of all, he was a great friend.

Although we only met three times, we emailed a lot. Dave helped me work through a serious bout of depression. I’m sure he didn’t want to be my counselor, but he emailed me so much encouragement to get through things. I mostly fell out of touch with him when I moved from England to the US, and I really regret that. I love and miss ya, Bolt.

To all of my old friends here - I miss all of you as well. Take care, all.

Won't lie. I've had to take time away from the computer to process. I met Dave in person once, at the ICE convention in Birmingham, and he was the kind of guy you instantly warmed to. An absolute gent. Unfailingly supportive. And really funny, too.

Hi again everyone.

The outpouring of overwhelming nice words about Bolt both here and over the socials is the one positive thing to have happened in the last 24 hours - I don't have many words to add but I wanted to come back here, where we likely first met, and say that without his boundless support, guidance and patience I wouldn't be doing what I love for a job or be half the person I might be and many hundreds of fledgling comic folks wouldn't be either. I wouldn't be surrounded by kind and creative people. I wouldn't have had anyone to talk to when that horrible news came yesterday. But I did and I do and I owe it to him and I was lucky enough to drunkenly (and soberly) tell him how much he meant to me many times so I think he had an inkling.

If you've people in your lives who sound like they've done that for you then please let them know too, sooner rather than later. None of you are islands, reach out if you feel you can and forgive yourselves always, for everything. <3

I remember visiting the Bristol Comic Con several years ago as a total con noobie and wandering round too shy to really talk to anyone but enjoying the atmosphere all the same. I eventually approached the FutureQuake table as I'd had a script recently accepted so considered that an 'in' to talk to Dave. He was welcoming, friendly and super enthusiastic about all things indie comics. He helped to cement my daft ideas that making comics was the way.

Someone on Twitter wrote "he was a Kenobi to many Lukes". I'd consider myself one of them. Thank you, Dave.

: Dandontdare 07 May, 2021, 07:55:10 PM
I'm devastated.

I met Dave and Richmond at the first con I ever attended, Hi-Ex in 2010. Until then I'd never done the cons because I didn't know anyone and was too shy to just introduce myself, but after joining this board I made so many friends who I was glad to discover were even better company over a few beers in the post-con bar, and none more so than Dave, who was just the friendliest and most positive guy.

Over the years the FutureQuake table was always the focal point of any con, the place I'd keep looping back to to see who Dave was chatting to now. I saw him introduce so many shy newbies to other fans (oh so YOU'RE *name* on the forum) and blow their minds when John Wagner or Al Ewing would pop by. I always waited for cons to stock up on my 'zines from Dave, and have quite a collection of his mini-sketches - I always loved his avuncular 'Uncle' Tharg.

We were delighted to discover that decades earlier when we were both in our teens, Dave probably sold me comics when I would get the train into Manchester to visit Odyssey 7. I never worked with him because I'm not much of a creator, but sadly I did start work on my first decentish idea for a Dredd script and was looking forward to discussing it with him at Thought Bubble. Won't be opening that file for a while.

The last time I saw Dave IRL was at the last Thought Bubble in Harrogate. Izzy had dashed off excitedly to dance with (well, in the proximity of) Kieron Gillen, and Dave was doing what he loved best, chatting about comics and more with a beer and a bunch of friends. It was a grand night, and we vowed to do it again at the next one, but we never will.

He was the best of us, I can't imagine what his lovely family must be going through. RIP Bolt.

Yeah, that was a great night.

Here's a tiny touch of his nurturing genius: I'd written a Judge Dredd/Numbskulls mash-up and Dave kindly did the character designs and drew it. I was so chuffed when he showed me that Dredd's eyes were little Mechanismo units. Hadn't even occurred to me and instantly gave me the idea for the first strip.

: Hawkmumbler 07 May, 2021, 08:56:25 PM
One of the crowning memories of Dave I will always cherish is the Thought Bubble Saturday night we all came together to watch the rough draft of SEARCH/DESTROY. Dave had made no secret through a few sly smiles and off hand comments he was involved in some way, we would just have to wait and see how and in what way.

The collective cheers and laughs of delight when a great big paper cut out of Daves mug came hurtling towards the camera by way of Kid Knees...knee, was one of the highlights of that years Thought Bubble. Truly a joy to be there among so much good energy.

I'm glad I met the man even if it was only briefly at the 40th celebration. He was every bit as friendly and genuine as his online persona suggested.

I was always charmed by how he referred to his kids as diminutives of Bolt and it's great to know that came from the estimable Trout. As others have said he was clearly the best of us and touched so many people's lives in nothing but positive ways.

Not on here much anymore, folks, but saw the news this morning and had to come in and pay the respects. Can't lie - I'm gutted with that. Won't pretend I knew Dave very well but we exchanged a lot of email over the years when I was contributing to Zarjaz a few times and wasn't hard to figure out from there what a decent, funny, patient and enthusiastic skin he was, even after I convinced him we should risk Uncle Pat's wrath to do a Nemesis strip, convinced him it should be twelve (!!) pages long and convinced him he should do a bigger size for a one-off summer special. Rather than telling me to eff off - as he should have - he just went for it instead, refusing my offers to help offset the larger printing costs and doing the dirty work I was too scared to do by contacting Pat to ask if it was all okay.

I think what's worth considering from all this - and as someone else has already pointed out in here - is that people can literally change other's lives with their actions and Dave was clearly one of those people. There's a long list of writers and artists who can thank him personally for giving them a place and opportunity to showcase their talents and move into the big leagues and let's not forget that no-one's buying a private island from editing and contributing to small press. Dave did all that stuff without a second thought and for no reward other than his own satisfaction and pure love of the medium. That's no small thing and it's really all I've been thinking about today since I heard the news.

All my sympathy to his family and his many, many friends. I'll be hoisting one skywards for Dave tonight and wishing him well. Take care of yourselves, folks. All we've got is each other.

This is the worst of it. That someone as widely loved and respected as Dave ended up in a place where he felt he had to carry whatever he was carrying alone. Christ, I don't think there's a single one of us that wouldn't have stepped up if we'd known. But we didn't. No one did. I was exchanging emails with him at the back end of April about how much we were both looking forward to conventions restarting and making plans to meet up for drinks.

And then, this.

Thanks for sharing the link to the fundraiser. I've donated and shared, as it felt only right to given his influence on my comics career (I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the prog and beyond without all that time spent working on stuff for FQP).

Don't want to say too much about the nature of his passing but I'm sure many of us have stared over that precipice and know only too well how much suffering it must take to not turn back, which is what's utterly heartbreaking. That's not how I'll remember him, though - that will be where he seemed amongst his happiest, selling comics from behind a table with a beaming smile!

I let out a very real and very audible sob when I put the pieces together, that sentence being the catalyst, and it only hurt the matter even more. Four years ago I was in the deepest pit I have yet found myself in, however in part through the BDT and in no smaller yet part due to Dave actively reaching out and actively helping me with my malaise. I might not be here today if not for that. Which only makes this even more painful, in light of how recently I was talking to him and....oh fuck....I'm so so sorry Dave.

I'll be putting as much as I can towards to JustGiving drive, and I just want everyone to know how important they are here. In a dark and often malicious invention that is the internet, frequently this place stands out as a bastion of good nature and mutual adoration for all shared interests. This latest update has hit me hard and I'm not able to process it at all.

Please reach out, please tell the people in your life how you feel - it hurts, it's awkward, it may not seem like it makes much of a difference at first but it does.

Please don't delay, if you're reading this reach out right now, tell someone you're in pain and they WILL listen. You deserve to be forgiven, you deserve to be loved and you always will be and you always are. I don't want to lose anyone else to this.

Dave also reached out to me after my health scares and it is utterly heartbreaking that I couldn't return that kindness. "Big boys don't cry" my arse. Cry, cry like a broken tap if you have to, and never, ever, be afraid to cry out.

Shocking to hear this news, my thoughts go out to his family and friends.  I didn't know Dave, but had a brief email exchange shortly after I joined the forum which always stuck in my mind.  He was after one of the FCBD progs, so I messaged him to say I'd send him mine, put it in the post and thought nothing further of it.  A few days later the latest Zarjaz popped through the letterbox - he had sent it as a 'thank-you'.   It was an unexpected and kind gesture, and helped make me feel that this was a pleasant and friendly corner of the internet.  RIP.

I had an awful feeling that might have been the case. Not to turn attention away from this, but my brother killed himself coming up to two years ago, like this, out of the blue. There was a huge number of people at his funeral and any one of them would have helped him through, would have listened.

It always sounds trite, but I'll echo what has been said already - if you can talk people will listen and try to understand, and help. If you can't talk to someone just realise it's important you're here, you're better than most others. Look at the shit you've survived already.

This is impossible to process. Bolt lit up any room, and reached out to everyone, regardless of their social difficulties or shyness. I find it incredible that there was any darkness in him. This breaks my heart all over again.

I’d do anything just to sit and chat with him.

I'm so glad to see the kickstarter exceed its target, but the words that came with it were almost beyond my capacity to process. I hope Dave's family can take some small comfort from the outpouring of love that has been expressed, though I would imagine that will not come easily or quickly.

And I will add to what has been said on this thread only to agree. Issues with mental health seems to be something with which many of us here have particular personal experience. Myself included. If anyone, ever, feels close to making any kind of final act, then please *reach out*. I'm only still here because of an accidental sequence of events- but within an hour of those events happening, I realised that they saved me from making a terrible final step. I would hate for anyone else to get to that point and have to rely on an accident to save them, when there are people ready and willing to step in. We can't lose anyone else.

: Dog Deever 10 May, 2021, 01:00:34 AM
I did some stuff for Amanda Kear on old photocopy style Dogbreath- some illustrations and a crap strip. I heard from Dr Bob that she'd handed it over, I can't recall who to but IIRC I contacted them after long deliberation- I think that might have been when I joined the board on Dr Bob's recommendation. I was told it was being taken over by Dave & Rich at FQP and it took me a while again to make contact- I did some digging about Furturequake and saw how good it looked and was more than a little intimidated- I thought they'd politely tell me they were full up, but Dave was really enthusiastic and took a risk on a guy he'd never met, didn't know at all and didn't know anyone who knew him. All he had to go on was a handful of shit pictures and a crummy strip.

By the time I met him and Rich at Hi-Ex 2010 Dave felt like a friend- I'd done some stuff for those early FQP Dogbreath's and we'd communicated quite a bit but my health was starting to fail after Swine Flu- I think I was on heavy-duty antibiotics at the con. When I met him for the first time it was like I had known him for ages and he was so supportive and encouraging. And Rich too- I don't want him to think it was just Dave, not at all.

Health problems spiralled with post-viral infections and bottomed out with serious mental breakdown, off work, head full of pills- sitting staring at a wall and not speaking to any of my family at all- it must have been like living in Shallow Grave. I blew a strip for Something Wicked- it was going okay but I wasn't.
I felt so bad about it and was beating myself up and making things worse but Dave was so understanding, so patient- now I know why and it makes it all the more terrible a thing.

Through my smashed arm, my Mum dying, struggling with rehabbing my arm, painkiller dependency and depression relapses around all of that, Dave & Richmond never kicked me into touch- "soon as you're ready, give us a call". Rich even wrote a 3-page strip for Dogbreath specially to get me a bite-sized start again. It was like a life-line at the time.
Dave had always joked I kind of came with the furniture in Dogbreath and he always made me feel like an integral part of it all. I've always felt so bad for not being able to continue with it for so long- I loved working on Dogbreath and it was my intention to get my arm and my head back in a place where I could start from scratch. He never made me feel like it wouldn't happen, even after blowing a Dogbreath script for him around my Dad's death- that kept me away from the board and away from everything- I felt like a heel and was too ashamed to come back.
When I finally plucked up enough courage to, just a very short while ago, there was Dave again- "don't worry about it, soon as you're ready give me a call".

I don't have any words to express how good that made me feel and how it rekindled old enthusiasm with immediate effect.
Like others- I wish I'd known what he was experiencing himself. He was a great guy and I couldn't imagine him being in that place too, there was always a sense of fun and optimism about him- if only I could have done anything or said anything that made him feel half as good as he always made me feel. Heart-breaking stuff.
I can't really lay any claim to have known him well in the grand scheme of things- I know how gutted I am but I can only imagine how you guys who knew him so much better are feeling. Particularly Richmond.

I talked to Izz yesterday and I tried, inadequately, to explain how I struggled at cons for years, how a crippling sense of 'imposter syndrome' left me feeling alone and isolated, and how Dave was always someone I could guarantee talking to would make me feel accepted and welcome.*

I struggle with similar, Jim- last Glasgow con (whenever that was again!), I had my ticket and my Megabus ticket all booked up. All I had to do was drive 30-odd miles to Inverness and get on a bus. For inexplicable reasons I just couldn't deal with it and turned round at the turn off to Culloden, not far from Inverness.
I ended up sitting among the Clava Cairns having a cig and drinking coffee I had for the bus down, killing time. Then I phoned my wife and told her I was stuck in traffic and had missed the bus- I was coming home.
Then I beat myself up for weeks because I wasted money on tickets, because I hadn't gone down to see the guys from here I know and because I was a stupid, pathetic, irrational shit who couldn't get on a bus and go to see people he likes.

Not sure if this needs it's own new thread but if you could share this wherever you can think it needs to go:

The family of our beloved Bolt have asked me to share a JustGiving page for his funeral.

https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rememberdave (https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rememberdave)

Also - and I cannot emphasise this enough - don't be afraid to reach out if you're in pain and forgive yourself always. You are not alone ❤

That last sentence. I was, just over a week ago. I did reach out to a friend. It helped so much.

Men find it difficult to seek and accept help. Understand that and take the step. It may save your life.

- Trout

Yeah, same here. I've had quite the year (I mean, everyone has, but still...). A friend (who shall remain nameless to spare his blushes / save stoking his massive ego) who I met via this very board was good enough to check in on me and listen to my moaning about stuff I'd brought upon myself. Sometimes all it takes is to have a good old gripe and get things off your chest, particularly during these interesting times, where you don't get to see anybody and taking off down the pub with your mates isn't an option.

As others have said more succinctly and eloquently than me, if you feel like you've got nobody to talk about this stuff with, you're wrong. If we're in contact - however distantly - I'd 100% rather listen to a friend (or even an acquaintance) complaining about whatever's bothering them than have to read another one of these threads.

Profoundly saddened by the news.

From the earliest days of the message board along with Richmond, Arthur, Ed and Paul - Dave made it possible for so many of us to realise an ambition and for our work to see print.

I was always humbled by his abundance of enthusiasm, unwavering support and generosity of spirit; in essence Dave helped me become a fan again and for that I am forever grateful.

Our paths haven’t crossed in an age but Dave’s posts and comments, all of his encouragement - serve as a reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do is make more comics.

A true Squaxx, you will be missed.

A mate's turnaround from major depression came after he rang The Samaritans (https://www.samaritans.org/) a few times, yet he still insists they were of no help whatsoever because "all they did was listen while I did all the talking."  Which is, of course, the point.
If you feel you can't talk to friends or family, there are still people you can talk to in confidentiality, and it might be all you need.

This. Very much.
That's all it took for me to come back from very close to where I can only assume Dave got to- 6 weeks of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy over the phone at 1 hour per week. I did most of the talking with occasional questions from a woman I can only recall as 'Emma' and that might not even be right- I never saw her at all, just an occasional voice at the other end of the phone. I was forced to talk for various reasons and eventually capitulated against my will. Had I not done so, it was not going to go anywhere good- you are under siege, the walls are crumbling, supplies have run dry and you've started to consume yourself.

To reiterate what everyone is saying- talk to someone- your boss (you can be referred to Occy Health and be given leave which will relieve some pressure) or your GP can work too. Talking hurts, but you're already hurting whether you admit it or not and it's really the first step out of a very deep, very dark hole.

I've not been active in comics fandom for over a decade now but I always remember Bolt being a highlight when I went to cons. Not only were his publications of the highest quality, but he was such a friendly guy. I remember one DreddCon he lent me his original Crisis issues, so that I could read 3WW as we had been talking about it here. I don't think he had even met me beforehand, but he made such a generous offer, and trusted me to not take advantage of him. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Just fucking talk to someone. Please.
A lot of people saying this.

Without knowing anything about Bolt's specific situation, I will say this;

As someone who has been in dark places there are two problems ith the 'just talk to someone':

1. Often in this situation you don't have anyone you can talk to.
2. Even if you do, they often don't want to be burdened with your problems. They may well lend a sympathetic ear for ten minutes but you will soon find they don;t want to know and will start avoiding you.

That second point is one I've run into a few times. You can get accused of trying to drag people down with you, and I can't begin to tell you how much that hurts when in a bad place such as that.

your boss (you can be referred to Occy Health and be given leave which will relieve some pressure)

At the risk of causing offence I will suggest extreme caution with this.  Having been on the receiving end of several incredibly nasty / relapse inducing experiences, it is not something to be approached lightly.  On OH practitioner I was referred to clearly had clue-none about MH issues and in the end I had to request termination of the interview as a result of the distress his line of questioning generated.

There are no words though that can fully express the loss this news entails.  The pain and anguish his family will be feeling right now ... The loss of someone so well regarded, supported and capable.

Perhaps this is a reminder that as much as we would all rather the Black Dog Thread was not needed, it is nevertheless one that should be leant on.  So many folks in these parts  that are capable of empathising and finding the right words at the right time (yes, I know we have our spats and strops but still ...) and helping to ease the darkness a little.

RIP Bolt, take care everyone else ...

My wife works as a counselor, and when I told her about what had been happening she wanted to make sure that a key message went out: if you're suffering then reach out and talk to someone about it. I hate to bring up statistics, because it seems heartless in a way, but statistically, it really does help if you talk to someone.

Lots of people already making this point, of course, but I wanted to reiterate it.

Wishing everyone all the best.

Yes you do. Us. Anyone. Don't ever think this, not to diminish your experience Scrotnig but that's never true.

2. Even if you do, they often don't want to be burdened with your problems. They may well lend a sympathetic ear for ten minutes but you will soon find they don;t want to know and will start avoiding you.

Also - superficially yes, it's difficult if anyone just rings you and goes "I'M FEELING TERRIBLE"

but can I tell you guys, Bolt was this for me. He put up with so much of my raging and self-flagellating and anger and sorrow and everything. He listened to it all, it meant the world and it always will and I don't mind who you are or why, do the same. Give Shark a buzz, give me a buzz, give anyone saying "just talk to me" a buzz, give the Samaritans a buzz and I guarantee you:

1 - You'll be heard
2 - I can't guarantee anything else but the first one is valid, it really is.

Frankly I'm glad this thread has taken this turn. It's extremely important to talk about how you feel. I feel terrible. How are you?

Hardly ever on here these days but decided I would pop in.

So many old friends here hurting. I've passed a few comments to some of you on other places such as Twitter or FB.

Filming the Rok Panel for Lawless John Wagner brought Dave up. Dan recounted his recruitment story. Dave was central to a lot if things.

I only know Dan and Iz from his blood-family, lovely peeps. But obviously there is Richmond from his Comic-Family.

I told my non-Comic friends about Dave a few times. And when discussing this I mentioned that I knew he been there for people when they needed him.

I've passed a few words with Shark un the past on here about our black dogs (literally actually). And though not knowing details of who Dave helped it was just obvious that somd of us would turn to him.

Hawk, not surprised Dave reached out to you, mate.

I said on Richmond's FB I am here for any of you. No judgement abd no unasked for advice.

I think my contract deets are in my Sig. But those that don't know me my real name is Steve Hargett and you can find me on FB, easiest way is by looking at Richmond's FB probably.

But I'll be a Friend on someone you know's page I bet.

Or teach me on Twitter @chiropterarex (means Bat King) or on Judge Tutor Semple Blog somehow or other.

Gonna miss Dave, just like most of you who went to Cons I looped round to his table several times per day at TB. I'd cartagena up with some of you there. He would often let me know someone was at the Con if he thought I would want to se them. "Jim Campbell is here!" He delightedly told me at the Pre-Plague TB.

Sucks big time.

Remember. Talk to someone, anyone. If not Friends or Family talk to a person on internet you don't know. Or ring a helpline.

Love to you all. Especially some of you. :)

Have to admit this tallies with my own experience too Scrotnig, so why I added about 'if you can't talk'.

I know talking would help and is more possible for a lot of people but it's definitely important to recognise the reasons for depression mean the person might not be inclined to talk about it, so putting the onus on them to start the conversation isn't how it will go. There has to be recognition from others that the onus should be on them too sometimes.

I only found out through a random facebook post and I didn't believe it at first.

I'd only 'spoken' (well, email, but that tends to be the limit of my social interactions nowadays) to Dave a week before so it just didn't feel real.  His support showed me I wasn't a talentless hack wannabe and I always planned to go to Thoughtbubble or similar and say thanks.

Thanks Dave - for the support, for the enthusiasm and the sheer joy of seeing the comics in our head become real.

It has been such a long time since I posted here but had to say something about our lovely friend Dave. Dave and Richmond were the first people I ever talked to at a comic con. My ex had a story accepted and we wanted to say thank you and hello. From then on they were my friends. Their choice by the way, neither let us walk by without saying hullo. At Inverness when he and I were a bit too shy (yes me!) to introduce ourselves to everyone, Dave just picked our table up added it to the group and I made forever friends with lots of you that weekend. We may not talk much, it may just be on social media or at cons but these friendships are real and important. And the loss of Dave is just huge, massive. I'm struggling with it and know many of you are too. So yes. That's all. Huge love and hugs to all of you xxxx

Thanks to everyone who contacted me - it was a deeply cathartic day, painful but beautiful and a very real convention hotel bar vibe emerged in the evening which I'm sure people will be comforted by.

The "stream" of the ceremony will be available in the week for 28 days or so, so do contact me if you want access to it and I'll pass the details along to you. Or, for anything at all of course, we are none of us an island and help is always there, even if your mind tells you doggedly that it's not.

I thought his family did him proud with the speeches .. including his best advice to his kids "Never draw Dredd's nose and pop WILL eat itself"

Will Zarjaz be continuing without Dave?
Will there be a Zarjaz special to commemorate his life and effort in creating such a wonderful fanzine?
Dave was such a powerhouse and is sorely missed.
If not, I think everyone would totally understand.
