Events / Re: Lawless 2024
Every year for about 5 years now I've been promising I'll make Lawless someday. Think it was about 2 years ago I promised myself I'd make it, if I wasn't able to do so sooner, to the 10th anniversary convention.

Initially I wrote it off, as the weekend in question is when I was supposed to be doing a van run to help my sister move into her temporary summer digs in Manchester before she starts Uni in September.
Turns out that's been delayed until the following weekend, so might sneak in a cheeky Saturday only trip.
See folks there!

I'll champion Martin Edens THE O-MEN until the day I die as the unsung cape capers masterwork.

God I'm long overdue a reread.

Honourable mention goes to Shotaro Ishinomoris original draft manga run of KAMEN RIDER, because its great and I'll never get the chance to bring it up again.

Been doing a bit of a catch up, delighted to see Eric Powell make the list in any capacity once again proving Colin knows what the good stuff is.

Kill or Be Killed has been on my list for so long now, believe it was billed to me at TB years ago as 'Satanic Panic Button Man' and yeah, looks dope.

Keep up the stellar work mate!

I hope the show never drops if it means this thread continues to give me my twice weekly belly laugh.

My condolences to both Barrington Boots and JohnW, it's a conundrum I can all too easily sympathise with at the moment. After my annual dentist check up yesterday and recounting a nasty molar infection I had back in November it's been established all four of my wisdom teeth will need to be removed. 2024 continues to test me, the projected cost at a self fund rate had my eyes watering (£350 per tooth) as did a projected 4 year wait on the NHS.
I'm profoundly fortunate that health insurance through my employer should hopefully see it written off at a much reduced cost before the summer ends.

Teeth, can't say i'm too enameled with them at the moment.

Well I'm having one of those melancholy days. Just one of those cases where something feels...off inside.
I'll keep myself busy and hopefully it'll go away, I could really do without spiralling again.

Besides the fact but I hope folks who've been having a rough patch lately are doing well.

Fair! I actually entirely forgot ZZ was just unavailable in the west until about 10 years ago, I'm absolutely speaking from a position of privilege there being able to go through the original run in true sequential order, good time to be alive. Hope you get as mch out of ZZ as I am, it's rightly deserving of its reappraisal.

Dunbine is 'chefs kiss' one of the very best.

Surprised you bypassed ZZ to get to Chars Counterattack, Goatee. Admittedly it's not mandatory viewing to understand CCA, to the point the (allegedly) absolutely dismal Zeta redux films actively write ZZ out of canon, but the impact the Argama crew would have in setting up the events of the movie (and indeed, the entire First Neo Zeon conflict in general) ZZ I suspect will certainly enhance my enjoyment of CCA when it comes to a rewatch sometime next month.

Following that I think I'll be giving the UC a rest for a bit, I'm likely going to dive straight into a 1st time viewing of Seed coming off of the back of how much I loved the Freedom movie. With Seed being probably the single most divisive work of fiction I've ever encountered (genuinely have never met anyone who falls anywhere in between loving the Cosmic Era and hating it) I'm going in with an open mind.

Been pretty much completely socials free for about 3 years now, save for keeping FB on life support because the messenger app on desktop is damn useful.

Not saying everyone needs to do so but I saw a marked improvement in my mental health and temperament after a while of doing so.

At the a little over the half way point and the 'antagonists' just killed 1/3 of the Earths population by dropping a colony (for the uninitiated (most people reading this) colonies are huge in Gundam and usually home to several million people in their own right) on 'checks notes'...Dublin.
As fucking hilariously specific as that is ZZ is some of the most fun I've had watching a longer form show in years, this shit rocks.

Curious review, especially given the last two paragraphs seem to wholesale misrepresent pretty boilerplate aspects of the narrative.

The ever readable Matt Lynch sums up my own take away (with a few derivations, of course) better than I actually could.

Wan centrist hand wringing. Seen arguments being made Garlands unwillingness to make any sort of socio-political statement is the point but...NOT making a statement is still making a statement. Make some sort of argument one way or another on binary political Pidgeon holing at least, lest all you're left with is what we got. Vague, hollow gesturing in the general direction of demarcations and echoing 'really makes you think, huh?'.

Craven in its cowardice, ugly in its mediocrity. Stank.

Keeping the Universal Century wagon rolling (sorry folks, this shits too good) with a first time viewing of Gundam ZZ.

Can see why this was considered the black sheep of the series for years, the hard swerve from the devastating finale of Zeta to the light shenanigans of ZZ would have been jarring with only a two week buffer between shows.
That being said, ZZ IS very funny and endearing and the high bar of animation direction carries over from show to show. 35 years on and ZZ still LOOKS the bomb, excited to work through this one.
