Dredd returns to McConville’s time-travel shenanigans, which feels a bit like it’s talking place in an alternate time stream from the main Dredd strip, to some degree.

I found myself thinking much the same thing. I enjoyed the strip, especially the Walk and Talk scene in the Hall of Justice - very West Wing, but it feels like it's floating outside of the current Dredd continuum. A line like "Chief Judge Lewis has guaranteed Texas City is on side, and of course the Guatemalans will support us now El Presidente is gone." would have anchored the story nicely.

Maybe I am reading too much into this but the whole "Profundia?" "But the optics of this..". seemed to hark back to Theresa May's semi-desperate negotiations with the DUP post 2017 election day.

General / Class of '79
« on: 13 January, 2022, 01:35:09 PM »
Inspired by a discussion on another forum thread, I recently took a second look at the Garth Ennis story Raider. It got me thinking how many graduates from the famous Class of '79 we have encountered over the years, and just what percentage turned out to be, by varying degrees, wrong 'uns?

Here is the best I can come up with, in chronological order.

Alvin
First appearance - prog 2
Current status - Dead (killed by Whitey).

Joseph Dredd
First appearance - prog 2
Current status - still going strong after all these years.

Steele
First appearance - 1978 annual
Current status - Hypnotised by criminal Igor Sansky, he murdered four judges before being killed by Dredd.

Rico Dredd
First appearance - prog 30
Current status - Turned criminal; served 20 years on Titan. Killed in a shootout with his brother on his return to MC-1.

Gibson
First appearance - prog 34
Current status - adopted a criminal alter ego as Mutie The Pig. Unmasked then killed by Dredd.

Wagner
First appearance - prog 35 (first shown Prog 811)
Current status - Unknown

Hunt
First appearance - prog 35 (first shown Prog 811)
Current status - Unknown

Karl Raider
First appearance - prog 810
Current status - handed his badge in 20 years after graduation. Turned vigilante. Killed in a showdown with Dredd.

Kray
First appearance - Prog 811
Current status - Unknown

Peters
First appearance - Prog 811
Current status - Unknown

Bart Kimble
First appearance - prog 2006
Current status - Titan? Confessed to misuse of funds (also possibly unjudicial liasions).

West
First appearance - Prog 2006
Current status - Unknown

Dykson?
First appearance - Prog 2006
Current status - Unknown

Nestor
First appearance - prog 1652
Current status - Dead (suicide).

If there are any others I've missed, I'd love to know.

But he also did Raider, which I like very much

yes, me too. I think this might be Ennis' best Dredd effort and the closest he ever came to 'getting' Dredd. The dialogue at the end when the two Class of '79 graduates have a showdown

Raider "Been a long time, Joe. I wondered what I'd say to you when we got to this..."

Dredd "I haven't. Drop the guns, Raider. You're under arrest"

is perfectly unsentimental.

...too many things just didn't make sense.   A judge who quits in disgrace being allowed to keep his lawgiver?  Dredd pistol-whipping a perp who was already in custody?

though I also can't help agreeing with these points from Jaysus

Most of the GNs I bought this year were from years past and the archive but there were plenty of great buys in 2021.

My three favourites:

1 Dredd Guatemala (Colin, looks like you missed this one)
2 Major Eazy: Volume One The Italian Campaign
3 Tales from the Black Museum

Caveat : I have not yet read Now that's what I call Justice and judging by the votes so far, I am seriously missing something.

That said...

A Penitent Man - Great sociological storytelling by KN; I'd love to see more fallout from this 6-parter.

Adios, Rowdy Yates - Sheer volumes in that final line. Perfection.

Brief Encounter - Sassy & thoughtful, yet another superb one and done character portrait from Niemand. Maybe the best looking Dredd of the year, too.

Best of The Meg - How Do You Solve A Problem Like Francisco?

2234 Plummet of the Ape - PJ Holden.

Something very magical in the simplicity of this cover.

2229 Crunch Point - Dermot Power

OK, the lawgiver barrel is a bit wonky but everything else is ace. Great shit-eating grin from Dredd, as he strides over a crushed droid (a crucial turning point for the episode within) with boots that would do McMahon proud.

2251 Escape into the Unknown - Mark Harrison

Very busy without being overwhelming. Lovely colouring and a great central focus.

Most of this has been said by previous posters but here is my two cents:

Dredd – I had my heart in my throat at the end of page one. "Oh God, it's one of Buggo the Brave's mates". Nice story overall with Dredd now totally at ease with the Mark 8s...but what a rug pull at the end. Just plain nasty.

Death Cap – Despite the incredibly unnerving villains (the worst case of Grubb's disease so far?), this looks like it has serious legs. Redemption in spades awaits for Goya.

Diamond Dogs – I really do try and like this, indeed anything that Armitage appears in, but I just tuned out about three months ago.

Lawless – Hit the ground running after the big break and immediately launched four or five plot threads. Superb.

Surfer – Lovely to see Wagner delving back into the treasured past with a story that does not revolve around the Apocalypse War. I can feel this really is going to be a good thrill.

Floppies - Great collection of festive Dredds, the standout for this cit being Death Row: my first time reading....and a absolutely sublime Wagner bait & switch.

A fabulous end to the year.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Black Museum tale, Double Jeopardy.

That's the first time I've seen any Nick Dyer art in B&W.

So different from his colour output; really felt like he was channelling Cam Kennedy

only ever seems talked about because it reminded people of that story, not because of anything it was doing in itself.

Not from my POV.

There is a lot to like about Zancudo:

A sympathetic portrayal of Cuidad Barranquilla judges; well fleshed-out city (empire?) politics; a touching love story; superb Cam Kennedy art.

Any Battle fans in the South West?

I popped into Forbidden Planet Bristol at the weekend and discovered they have four or five hardback copies of Garth Ennis Presents Battle Classics Vol. 2 (Fighting Mann) for the ridiculously low / clearance price of £2.99

'War Buds' springs to mind as a possible fit?

War Buds was the first thing that popped into my mind when i saw those pages. Emaciated ex Judge strapped to a bed and all that. However War Buds has already been collected in the Cold Wars trade.
