He may have seemed that way, but personally, I always suspected he was like one of those lizard-people from 'V'. (Thanks for the kind words, Colin. Have passed what info / advice I have onto the OP.)

Announcements / Re: Dave Evans, R.I.P.

Dreadful and deeply shocking news. Sadly I never had the opportunity to meet Dave in person, but he always had a kind and constructive word for my small-press writing, providing helpful advice as I was learning the ropes. He was clearly a font of irrepressible enthusiasm for all things comics. Condolences to all who were close to him.

It's not a conversation I was involved in, but I've just seen it and it appears you have misread it. 'Mod B' does not call 'Users A & B' arseholes - he makes reference (in a reply to 'User C') to the well-known aphorism that opinions are like arseholes - everyone's got one. The suggestion is, in fact, that 'User C' accept that others will have different opinions.

He's one of the definitive Dredd and Rogue artists, but Dillon's ventures into co-creation for Tharg were about as auspicious as Cliff Robinson's. All right they were better than that, but his best stuff was on pre-existing strips. Irving, on the other hand, thrived on creation - bar Death, most of his strips were uniquely his. In some ways, that ought to make him the winner, but I'm afraid one thing stands in his way - the greatest werewolves ever drawn by any man who ever lived! (Especially on that Scream! cover, but that doesn't count here.) Awoooooo! Grud, his art's biting me - it's Dillon!

Uncanny X-Men #213 is probably a career high-point too.

One day, future palaeontologists will find a complete fossilised Coleen Rooney skeleton locked in battle with Rebekah Vardy.

What do we reckon is Davis's best work then? I think my vote's for Delano-era Captain Britain. Delano gives Davis more varied subject matter than Moore, plus Davis is clearly still finding his feet during the first half of Moore's CB run. Some of Davis's character work in CB is exemplary - one instance that sticks in mind is the look on Brian's face when Meggan transforms from ugly duckling to elemental goddess. We all know exactly what he's thinking... and it's nothing innocent.

I'm listening to the Cirith Ungol now. Lovely 80s style production on it.
Yeah - The Frost Monstreme is a particularly excellent track. The Kull record is my album of the year though - Bal-Sagoth but with a different singer. I hadn't realised what a Jonny and Chris Maudling-shaped gap there was in my musical life till this came along and reminded me of the glory days of Starfire Burning.

Davis. His recent-ish run on Slaine was the best strip-work of his career. It's the sort of thing he should have been painting all along - get the man away from tech and into greenery.

Well, much as it was with Carlos, someone had to go up against McMahon. But as an unrepentant Howler fan, my vote can only go one way.

Simon Fraser. No-one draws cityscapes and shocked facial expressions like he does.

Alan Davis. Greater fame greeted him outside of 2000AD, but he certainly left his mark.

I'm not sure I'd have predicted how spectacularly one-sided this is so far - I thought everyone loved the man with the great-and-correctly-spelled first name. (I mean, yeah, Jesus is a pretty good name too.)

Starlord counts.
