Books & Comics / Re: Mark Millar's CLINT
28 April, 2011, 07:58:51 PM
Did anything ever come of the myriad CLiNT submissions that Millar solicited via his website?

I have never read a page of the magazine, but I have found myself wondering whether Millar was actually looking for new talent to put in it or whether he was just using that as a way of getting comic people interested in his new venture.

Wow, Alien Hunt and Hungry T Rex are both fantastic

I have read the originals many times and I'd love to see you guys carry on with those ideas...

I would like to see him back on Rogue Trooper, Fiends of the Eastern Front and Invasion!

As for "New Thrills"... sure if he has any new ideas. I think many of us would like to see him do a full series after his successful one-off comeback.

Didn't I put something like; "I am 100% certain that John Wagner is not a racist."? Sounds pretty conclusive to me.

You do come across as trying to have your cake and eat it on this. It's pretty hard to say that someone is definitely not a racist if you also say they are writing racist things.

As I said in my first post I accept that, due to personal proximity, I may have reacted over-sensitively to Our Man in Hondo.

I totally understand that, I am leaping to Wagner's defence because I admire his writing hugely and don't want to see him tarred with the bigotry brush, even in a qualified way.

At least it's kicked off an interesting debate.

Best thread in months!

Nobody has claimed that John Wagner is a racist.

Reading through this thread, you alternate between trying not to and basically doing just that.

The most recent example being "it's about on the same level as Jim Davidson."

Hell, you might be right though, I haven't read the story you're talking about for years, if indeed I ever read it.

QuoteNot sure about Shakespear though...

He may well have been a racist by today's standards, as would almost anyone from his era. Yet I find no evidence in his work that this was the case.

I just read Tour of Duty: The Backlash which is, via a not particularly subtle allegory, all about racism. I love how Wagner depicts pretty much everyone in Mega City One as a massive racist tw*t. He uses that to expose bigotry as retarded, baseless, mis-directed and anger-driven folly.

This story in particular informs my conclusion that John Wagner is not a racist but he does write about racism.

Now I have no doubt that this Hondo City story contains broad stereo-types that have not aged well. However, I think we need to be very careful about bandying around allegations of racism, especially if we're going to aim them at 2000AD creators and/or William Shakespeare.

1 - David Frankum
2 - Steven Denton
3 - JT Pegg

HM - Pete Wells

By an astonishing co-incidence I share a surname with Steven. By an even more astonishing co-incidence I also share a mother and father with him.

News / Re: Pat Mills interview at Forbidden Planet

I thought it was a great interview, I really like it when creators are brutally honest like this.

The character ownership angle is fascinating to me. I am not sure I agree that Slaine, ABC Warriors, Savage/Invasion! etc. should never be written by anyone else, and I think there's a degree of financial self-interest in that position. These aren't creator-owned characters, as far as I am aware, and  some of the greatest comics ever published have been re-invigorations of other people's ideas (Fairly ironically, Swamp Thing leaps to mind here).

However, it's basically up to Rebellion and you have to admire the honourable way they've handled such issues whilst they've been in charge.

Faced with the choice between the old HB for £5.25 and the new PB for £6.49 I went for the former.

I have read the Bishop/MacNeil sequel and, whilst the art is lovely, it's not worth a quid to read it again.

My only other Rebellion hardback is Leviathan. Shame Fiends is a totally different size to that edition - now they look weird together on the shelf - but I do like the idea of hardbacks and I'd be sorry if there weren't any more of them.

Suggestions / Re: Re-reprint this!

My vote is for Agency Files 1. Madness that this is so hard to get already.

Mean Team was initially great, shame there was a writer switch because the second run was appalling (except for the art).

I'd probably still buy a collection though, especially if it included Survivor.

Creative Common / Re: An indie comic mini rant

I have done a bit of small press comic publishing and indeed the aim is to collect the strips into a trade or two. However I won't be asking for your money in advance, not now or ever.

I do obviously want your money, but I'll do the decent thing and wait to have something to exchange it for.

Oh and I won't spam you even then, which may possibly be the real source of the aggravation here.

I got this book in my Christmas stocking.

Am not totally convinced the art style works for the source material but aside from that it's a very clever adaption. I have to admire how excitingly done the ending is and it probably makes a bit more sense than the way Lovecraft wrote it too.

Would love to see Mr Culbard take on Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath.
