I'm not sure what he's trying to say - though in my experience, Rik Mayall is actually quite insufferable when he tries too hard to be funny.  Still great in stuff like Mr Jolly Lives Next Door and The Young Ones, it's just his later tendancy towards mugging like a loon on camera that turned me off.

I had breakfast with Dom Jolly when Sarah and I went to Dublin last year, I never realised who he was until half way through, he was very quiet and quite a nice chap, not at all like his personas. Def. has the Pagliacci (sp) complex...

I remember Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson both admitting that one of the reasons for playing such outrageously obnoxious characters was so that they could get it out of their systems and therefore their family and friends wouldn't have to put up with it.
