Title: Meg 361 and new logo
Post by: Dash Decent on 10 June, 2015, 12:33:29 PM
I can't say I'm taken by the font but let's see if it grows on me.

I like it a lot more than the previous one. (Slightly surprised to not see a 2000 AD badge on there, given thoughts we'd heard in the past, but its omission isn't detrimental in any way.)

Yeah,  I like that too. I'd been expecting a progbadge next to a movie-alike font.  But that's really nice I think.

Yeah, that's really nice. The unfussy design will allow the cover art to breathe too.

Refreshingly uncluttered, which is nice. It also looks very, very similar to the current prog design (which makes sense) while clearly being a different mag.

Looking at this weeks Thrill Mail with the line up, It's looking nice.  El Maldito?  I'm thinking this harks back to Mr Ezquerra's Battle work, perhaps crossed with the original conception of Dredd.  Of course I could be wrong.

Mmm, not sure.  Awful plain isn't it?  Will give it a few weeks to see if perhaps it looks better in the flesh....well....paper!

Not a Meg buyer - though I do have a good run of the early ones in my collection.
But as it's a Carlos Dredd tale, and a kinda jumping on prog Meg, I might give this a whirl...

This is my jumping onboard Meg so very much looking forward to it. I've finally found the place to start my digital sub. Out of interest I wonder is that a parting piece of work by Pye or the work of a new 'bot. I'd assume the former given he's just left but what the heck do I know.

Makes for a nice lean cover.

I look forward to hopefully seeing this Meg cover on the very fine Covers Uncovered blog. I'm curious at to whether the background is part of the original artwork or added by the design droids.

Masthead is a good update IMO. I was expecting the redesign to reflect the look of the Meg and it does just that. Same font as the 2000AD masthead. I'm not sure I would've gone for black but there's more than one way to cook an egg.

It looks like some sort of textured paint on the original painting to me. I like the new look - very clean and 'flat' (in a good way).

I imagine it's a single-colour logo that'll be printed in whichever colour works best for any given cover.

I've seen the usual stupid complaints about covering the logo... if you can't figure out what the name is from the visible letters and, oh I dunno, the huge picture of Judge Dredd on the cover, then you're an idiot.

Now as a big fan of those stupid complaints, as I make them so often myself - no surprise there then - in this case I must admit I didn't even notice until it was pointed out...

Much more importantly, having received and read it .... Niiiiiiice!

Ezquerra on Dredd and a fairly standard start.  Nice little nod to Mestizo (and thanks to Butch to confirming my suspicions for me, sorry but I don't tend to listen to the podcast (and yes I know I'm probably missing out!)).

Demon Nic - like the layout and artwork on this, interesting flow especially with the complete absence of bounding boxes (oh and the writing is pretty good too!).

Storm Warning - now this I do like.  Although there are a number of fairly standard tropes at play it lays out its store nicely.  Quality artwork too.

Lawless - last time round I wasn't too fussed but this is a strong start with a nice little cliff hanger.

Overall - why the hell is this a monthly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't that missing the point of design and peoples own personal tastes, which the last time I checked, as we live in a free country we are all allowed to have without being maligned?

I'm not a professional graphic design bod, nor do I need to be to have an opinion. I'm an advocat of the logo allowing the art to take the space. I also don't really see why one would design a logo that will end up being covered up, compromised by the art or vice versa.

The first megs, way back in 1990 had that HUGE logo, the Judge Dredd font split nearly half the page, I suppose for marketing reasons & the art came off pretty poorly on the covers.

I don't really see why we have to go back to that potential situation/problem. If people don't like the text being covered up or the art being stifiled, I doubt they are idiots, they just have preferences about what they and don't like - as we all do.

I'm probably in the minority here though I have to concede and I suppose I'm quite old School in that I loved the 2000AD Fan logo before the shrank it & added that awful banner text.

I do like the Big Eagle designs inside and of course the stories are on a roll now that godawful Reaper bobbins has departed, so I can live with the logo in serenity rather than fatuousness.

And of course SFX has on occasion taken advantage of the judicious juxtaposition of logo and artwork for a subtle entendre.

I can't see which magazine's covers you've posted there, Butch - some of the letters are covered up by people's heads and thus rendered the title incomprehensible.

I think you misunderstand how a free country works.

Also: since you weren't complaining, why would you think you were being "maligned"? If, on the other hand, you were being offended on behalf some hypothetical other person, may I suggest getting a new hobby?

You don't seem shy of an opinion or two on here so go for it.

The last time you kindly popped up with some pearls of wisdom I recall you were asking me if I was a dick.

So, hopefully moving on......

Cover:  Nice.  Personally not fussed about covering the logo, and still not sure if I like it.  But hey, it's there now, and unlikely to change again for a while.

Dredd:  Nice western feel going on, should play out nice with Carlos' style.

Interrogation: Skimmed rather than skipped for a change, as I do rather like Ronald's work.  As always though, didn't really grab my attention long.

Demon Nic: Mmmm....Not sure.  Feel like I don't like the art....but then I don't hate it.....so maybe I like it a wee bit, no....no, I don't.  wait....maybe I do.  Baws...I dunno.  Scripting, too early to tell.

Anderson: Saving for later.

Storm Warning: Brit Cit stuff!  Nice art from Swan (A newcomer?  Don't recall the name at all) and a potentially interesting tale in the making.

Lawless: Very lovely art, and I did like the last run, so I'm hoping this will be another enjoyable outing for the character.

And I got printed in Dreddlines, hoorah!  Buttonman, watch out, that's me up to TWO times now, I'm catching up.....slowly. ;)

I already did. You'll notice that I struck out part of your text in my previous post. As I have noted at (tedious) length in the past, being entitled to an opinion doesn't preclude other people from pointing out that it's a stupid opinion. I don't actually care either way on this specific point, I was merely baffled as to why you would jump into a thread on which you hadn't previously commented to express your outrage that someone might criticise an opinion you hadn't actually expressed.

That would seem, to me, the very epitome of being offended solely for the sake of taking offense. Life is way too short for that, IMO. You are, of course, at liberty to disagree.

Wow - they don't like women do they?  You don't get to cover the logo if you're female, vulcan or a boy wizard.  Dwarves, hobbits, slightly older wizards, Kryptonians, gods and human males get to do what they want.  Oh well, at least the women are allowed to face the camera (instead of facing away, but looking over their shoulder towards it - like on most film posters these days).

I can't remember a singe panel from Finn book 1 but I really enjoyed book 2. How odd and yet pleasing.

The rest of the Meg was pretty good too including the text pieces (1 interrogation and a prose piece is a lovely balance). Demon Nic was the only story I wavered on but AT LEAST IT ISN'T REAPER!

N.B. Welcome back Lawless, an absolute gem.

Fantastic cover from The Staples. Eye catching and dramatic - lush! And the new logo works for me...

Dredd - This feels like a lost classic from the '80s already, in a good way of course. Shame to hear that Grennie's not going near Dredd again as I've always really enjoyed his yarns on the character. Anyway, good start to this.

Demon Nic - I really liked this! It felt refreshingly different for the Meg though at times I'll admit the lack of borders lost me  - a minor niggle and it only means I have to pay closer attention next month. Art wise it's like the love child of Philip Bond and Shaky Kane I reckon, which is a Good Thing.

Anderson - I generally don't really enjoy short prose stories of comic characters. It's nothing to do with the writers, just the stories never seem to fully engage me. That being said, this was grand.

Storm Warning - this was excellent. A really great introduction to a new character with some really lovely art. Good stuff!

Lawless - Yeah, liked the first outing and expect I'll enjoy this as much when it gets going. Really love the art on it and the opening pages were a feast of detail...but...and I'm not trying to be a twat or anything, it's a touch of OCD on my part, but her pony tail makes me want to point her in the direction of the regs handbook! The length can't be practical surely? Never mind how long it'd take to do in the morning! For the record I'll state that I'm bald so will accept that jealousy may be part of it.
