To save hijacking Mike's 3D models thread, he spurred me on to do more work on a model I'd started after Christmas.

Anyway here it is so far (untextured) - I'm not sure about the back, particularly the neck, on some drawings it bends down into the body, and on others it's more like a boxy vent at the back of the head.

Also looking at ref material again, it looks like the side bits on his body should be a lot shorter - I can't remeber if they're jets or something?

Anyway, suggestions/crits welcome.

Cheers,

Steve

Looks great, though the head seems to jut slightly too far forward. Lovely detail, though!

Steve Green

Yeah, I think you're right - maybe it could be a bit shorter as well.

Looks fantastic, Steve - very, very impressive!
Not sure what you mean by the side bits/jets, though - do you mean the ribbed pipe looking things that wrap around the sides?
Dan Dare will return for a new adventure soon, Earthlets!

That looks fantastic, was it all done in 3DS MAX? I like it the way it is.

Steve Green

Cheers - of course it means, I'll have to do Old Red Eyes at some point as well...

Yep, the thing that wraps around his waist but stops before the door in his torso. (The red bits on this pic)

I haven't really got a clear picture of that from the side, but from what I can make out it should stop around where his arms hang down.

I vaguely remember them being used as jets in one story, but I'm not sure.

Going by this maybe the head should be a little more squat, and the gap around the 'lips' be a bit chunkier.

The arms seem to vary a bit, but I'm sure in one story they telescoped, which makes sense for getting round the pipes etc, so I'll probably stick with something along the lines of what I've done already (rigid upper arm, and then a telescopic/flexible lower arm)

Hi,

yeah it was all done in 3DS Max - I'm just figuring out what might need to change when he's animated.

Like whether to make the area around the mouth a bit chunkier to give the teeth somewhere to go, whether he can look up, or just spin his head horizontally - how the arms work etc.

Cheers,

Steve

Oi! You git - come back with my thunder!

Very nice indeed... It actually doesn't look CGI: it looks like a photo of a real thing.

That'll be HDRI/Skylight type stuff, it's along the lines of what they do on films where they shoot a reflective sphere and grab the real lighting from the scene.

It's a quick way of looking something more real.

It does look like some limited edition statue someone might ask you to pay a disgusting amount of money for.

It's absoletely brilliant though, well done you daft nerk.  I'd like to see a coloured version as a star scan in a christmas prog.

Steve Green

Cheers PVS,

I'm rendering up a colour one tonight with a bit of texture, I'll post it tomorrow.

OK, here's a coloured up version, once I've finalised the model I'll spend a bit more time on that side, with rust/oil stains etc.

I changed the back of the head to match an O'Neill pic from a Ro-Busters story, but it does tend to vary, and I'm not sure if I prefer it if it just curves down at the back.

Cheers,

Steve

Oooh, that's good!

Though I reckon my Ro-Jaws could beat him in a fight... :)

I sense a TV Burp moment coming up... :)

Well, there's only one way to find out...
