He wrote the novel The Beach but the adaptation was done by John Hodge.

Didn't Hodge also write The Sweeney, which (humiliatingly) knocked Dredd off the top of the UK box office? ISTR someone saying The Sweeney was originally being produced by DNA too...?

DNA were going to make The Sweeney with FOX Searchlight but FOX pulled out a few weeks before shooting was to start. They moved on to Dredd when it fell through.
