Title: First single or album bought
Post by: 8-Ball on 27 April, 2014, 03:29:27 PM
When it comes to music everybody has to start somewhere and we don't always have the most sophisticated tastes when we are younger, so I would like to know -

What was the first single or album you bought versus the first single or album you admit to buying?

For example the first 7" single I actually bought with my own pocket money at the age of 12 was:
Arnee and the Terminators - I'll Be Back (a parody song from Radio 1 DJ Steve Wright)
http://youtu.be/WsSRE5wl6ew (http://youtu.be/WsSRE5wl6ew)

Whereas the first single (on cassette) I tell everybody I bought at the age of 14 is:
Guns N' Roses - Ain't It Fun (from their punk covers album The Spaghetti Incident)
http://youtu.be/zjbyzO9RK5w (http://youtu.be/zjbyzO9RK5w)

Anybody else?

First album bought I believe was Mansun - Attack of the Gray Lantern on cassette. Still like that album but not as much as their second album Six which I freaking love to bits!

The first album I can remember purchasing myself is 'Bad' by Michael Jackson.

The first single I owned was a Christmas present from my brother (10 years senior). It was 'Toy Dolls' with the seminal classic 'Nellie the Elephant'. I still own it to this day*

Cheers

*the first single I had was really 'Bachelor Boy' by the Perma-tanned God botherer Cliff Richard. It was on Floppy vinyl, and yes I still own it.

The first single I had bought for me was Summer Nights from the Grease soundtrack. The first single I bought myself was Green Door by Shakin Stevens - my Dad made me go up to the counter and pay for it myself, but I didn't want to, and went all shy when the guy at the till spoke to me. I think the next single I actually bought myself was Renegade Master (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu6IUWWOAf4) by Wildchild, so the Shaky incident proved to be a moment of primal childhood trauma.

Papa Roach - Infest

I was 12 years old and it was my first time going into town "on my own" (with mates, no adults). I got it for the song Blood Brothers after hearing it heaps on Tony Hawks Pro Skater. If memory serves it was from Bridge Street Records in Walsall.

Was stolen from me by a ex girlfriend when we broke up. I say stolen, it was at her house along with some other stuff of mine and I was too scared to go and get it back. Have since got myself a new copy for nostalgic reasons.

As far as 'admit' to buying...?
If the Music Police ever did roll up to my door and demand a socially acceptable answer to that question, I would tell them where to go.

If we're talking about actually spending my own money on, the first single was Blondie's Heart of Glass; and the first album would be War of the Worlds; but I was already the proud owner of the first two Muppets albums, A Rolf Harris album and the 7" Action Man single.

I probably only bought one or two more records after this 'cos my first best mate in secondary school had a vast musical knowledge, a great stereo and a humungous record collection (his mum worked for Branson's original Virgin records so he could get just about anything free). I'd just go round his house with a 10 pack of C90s and choose what I wanted him to tape for me. Still got boxes of (largely unplayable now) tapes, but I've replaced most of the core collection on CD and i-tunes .

First single I bought was either Ghostbusters, The Frog Chorus (Paul McCartney and Rupert) or Band Aid.

The first album was Southpaw Grammar by Morrissey. I almost bought either the Billy Joel album that has 'We Didn't Start The Fire' on it or the Turtles movie soundtrack but they were both too expensive so I didn't buy either.

First album I owned was Now 8 that I was given as a birthday present.

The first single I bought was with a Woolworths music token: The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia by Laurel & Hardy. Not sure if it was a double A-side. I found it hilarious. It came without a picture sleeve. In those days you were lucky to get a picture sleeve with a single.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgRJVlPJKQs

It pains me to say the first album I owned was Nightflight to Venus by Boney M. Well, I chose it as an Xmas present from my brother. I was with him and my dad when he bought it for me from Our Price records. At the same time I bought for him his choice which was Tonic for the Troops by The Boomtown Rats. So was that the first album I bought?

I can rescue this for me and declare that the first album I actually bought for myself was Remain in Light by Talking Heads which to this day is one of my favourite albums. (I still rate the album graphics by the late great Tibor Kalman's M&Co – I attended a speech by him once. He was a fascinating and very funny guy).

But... just to uncool that, alongside the above album I bought my first 12" single which was Ossie's Dream by the Tottenham Hotspur FA Cup Final squad with Chas n Dave (limited edition blue vinyl).

Nothing to be ashamed about here. It always fascinated me, back when I was a student in the late nineties, that the people who proclaimed that they had always been into (insert moderately obscure indie band here) after one or two snakebites let slip that they owned records by Jive Bunny or Belinda Carlisle.

I used to get a lift to work with a guy who had 3 tapes to play in his car (and he was always playing one of them). They were the Miami Vice soundtrack, a tape with about 20 versions of Axel F on it and the Jive Bunny album.
My favourite was the Axel F one.

My party trick used to be doing Paul McCartney's Frog Chorus in burps. Unfortunately time has not been kind to my oesophageal sphincter, and every time I try to do it these days I just end up with a mouthful of sick.

I had thought this was mine too, as my mate from primary school often mentions it being the first song he remembers dancing  to. At my house. However, I've just been looking at some chart lists and I think it may have been second after Eye of the Tiger.

First album, bought with Christmas money, was ABBA: The Singles: the first ten years.

I still have all three records.

To my ever lovin', baggy-panted shame, the answer to both is 'You Cant Touch This' & 'Please Hammer, Don't hurt 'em' (on good old cassette tape).

As a fan of 2000AD you know I must have some good taste!

First single bought for me was The Animals' House of the Rising Sun on its 1982 re-release. First single I bought myself was (slightly bafflingly) Men Without Hats' Safety Dance, although I immediately discovered that the B-side was much better. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrSHvIMQ404)

The following year, I bought my first album — The Works by Queen.

Cheers!

First single I can remember owning was 'Mississippi' by Pussycat- but I can't remember if I bought with pocket money, or it was bought for me. I definately remember buying 'I'm Still Standing', by Elton John, in 1983 and being acutely embarrassed in having to go up to the counter to pay for it.

First album was 'Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds' (abridged version).

First single I bought for myself was the bleeding cool 'Hi Fidelity' by The Kids From Fame. The first album, which I saved up pocket to buy, was 'Prince Charming' by Adam and the Ants.

I wouldn't ever make up a 'cooler' first purchase because, you know, not a tit.

If memory serves me right it was pink and floppy (oooerr!!)

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack, as I couldn't believe it was real and I'll be honest here - I'm still not sure.  I've seen the film and these songs are on it, and I had a physical copy of the album, but it all might still be some elaborate Borat-style lark: exhibit A - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81-CtojeMrA
I think I was erring towards believing it was a real album right until I saw the sequel movie had an album with a Vanilla Ice track on it, and since then I'm fucked if I can tell either way.

First single I bought wirh pocket money was The Show by Doug E Fresh and The Get fresh crew on 7". The first LP with my own money was Salt N Pepper's 'A Salt With A Deadly Pepper' on tape. Strangely remember the first 'casingle' I ever bought being Mantronix and Ruthjoy 'Don't Push It'.

As far as first albums are concerned, my parents bought me a cassette player for Christmas along with ABBA's Greatest Hits (they'd definitely already split up by that point); Parallel Lines by Blondie, which had so many great songs on it I thought that it was a greatest hits collection as well; and a Status Quo compilation that had lots of their greatest hits missing but had some of their early stuff, which just confused me. I couldn't get my head round the same band being the Paisley-shirted mods who made Pictures Of Matchstick Men (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8THWF09D9w) and the hairy nonsense of Down, Down (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=IKe2OfXLxuc#t=14). Then I saw This Is Spinal Tap.

First album I bought for myself once I was working and could afford comics and music was PJ Harvey's Dry (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QySwGXrpHzw), but that was after years of cheekily taping stuff my mosher and B-boy pals loaned me.

First single was either the Smurf Song by Father Abraham and The Smurfs (B-side was The Magic Flute Smurf), or Captain Beaky And His Band (B-side was two tracks, Wilfred the Weasel and Blanch), when I was 7.

First album was Dr. Heckle and Mr Jive by Pigbag when I was 12. Even then I liked weird music!

First album I paid for with my own shiny coins was "Pump" by Aerosmith - up until then, from about 83 to 89, my mum (bless her) had helped feed my rock/metal needs....she didn't even baulk at getting my Appetite for Destruction in 87.

First single - that was Bomb the Bass "Don't make me wait" in 1988. TUNE!!!

I'm guessing we must be roughly the same age because your experience more or less matches my own. I was allowed to choose between The Frog Chorus and Band Aid as a Christmas gift. I went for Macca's finest hour but was more interested in Rupert at the time.

The first single I bought with my own pocket money was M/A/R/R/S's Pump up the Volume, which was ultimately left on the record player by the window and melted in the hot sun.

I actually bought the TMNT soundtrack. It was shite. Even in the context of the above.

Early Queen records are sadly overlooked classics - Queen, Queen II the aforementioned Sheer Heart Act all the say to News of the World really all wonderful records. Gets a bit more patchy after that.

Since people have been including records bought with money actually earned by working, as a schoolboy, I did 2 weeks of work experience (free slave labour in other words) at Rocks Off, a local independent record shop.

It was the week that License to Ill by the Beastie Boys came out which was the best thing I had ever heard. At the end of the 2 weeks, the manager gave me a copy of the album as a thank you, starting a life-long love affair with the Beastie Boys and hip hop in general.

Ha , I remember a mate at school bought every version of that (there were about a dozen) on the same day - this was the first time I'd come across multiple-version 12" releases and we all thought he was insane for buying the same record 12 times.

My first album I bought was the extremely cool and still awesome...
Black Sabbath : Black Sabbath.....which I absolutely loved and still do 30 odd years later !

Unfortunately the 1st single I bought was the really crap : In the Year 2525 by Zaeger and Evans...
How can you possibly reconcile one with the other....Jeeezz !!

Oh, go on then: First single- Why Can't This be love by the mighty Van Halen. Album is trickier- I think it was 5150, which I bought on the same day as Batman and the Outsiders issue something in the later thirties with art by Alan Davis.

First album I had bought for me was A Fistful of Dollars/ For a Few Dollars More soundtrack. It was brilliant- I still have it (and as mp3's too  :-[)
I was quite fortunate- my parents got me Motorhead 'Iron Fist' album one year, which is ace- presumably my big sister suggested it.

First album I bought myself was (embarrassingly) The Exploited - 'Troops of Tomorrow'. I later, shamefully, bought more of their albums. There, I have confessed- I feel clean now.

First single I bought was 'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor, which was lucky as my second single was Peter Howell's Doctor Who Theme with Peter Davison cover and that just doesn't have as much street cred in anyone's book (except the saddest anorak's).

First album was probably something by Bowie or Ultravox but I forget which now. I'm going to go with Diamond Dogs because that's a little bit cooler than Monument. ;)

Not the first single I bought, but more a memorable incident.

As a young teenager I went into Woolworths seeking a copy of Bryan Adams' 'Run to You' (don't worry, I have seen the error if my ways since). When I approached the counter the attractive young woman explained they were out of stock.

I asked politely when new stock was expected, and at that moment the screws on both sides of my glasses gave, and the lenses simultaneously fell out, landing on the counter in front of this pleasant young lady.

Keeping a perfectly expressionless face, she explained they would be in next Wednesday. I thanked her, picked up my lenses and walked out of the shop.

This kind of shit happens to me ALL THE TIME.

The first single I bought was a kind of highly condensed audiobook of Star Wars that filled both sides of a seven inch vinyl. The first music single I bought was walking on the moon by the Police, I got it with a 50p record token that I got from mailing in tango ring pulls (most of which I found in the street).

There was a pretty big gap then until my first album, I think it may well have been by Frankie goes to Hollywood.

We had, what in my mind was an LP of Star Wars, which in my head (and possibly therefore not reality) was the edited soundtrack. Anyway it had a scratch on it toward the end and I find it hard, even to this days, when watching the film not to have

"...guess that's what your best at isn't it SCRRCH ...guess that's what your best at isn't it SCRRCH... guess that's what your best at isn't it SCRRCH... guess that's what your best at isn't it SCRRCH... guess that's what your best at isn't it SCRRCH..."

First single: Do the Bartman, on cassette.
First album: I think I made a simultaneous pirchase of Now 23 and a Genesis live album (the not-cool Phil Collins iteration, rather than the slightly less not-cool Peter Gabriel iteration). I'm somewhat surprised to find that I can't remember which was the first album proper that I bought for myself. Normally I'm an obsessive about those sorts of details. I copied Jacko's Dangerous off a friend - does that count? I liked that album a lot more than it deserved.

For anecdote's sake, I went on to buy Now 24 a year later at the same time as I finally completed my 2000AD collection (then up to the giddy heights of Prog 900!); the songs on that tape inevitably remind me of my first Slog, reading through progs 1-300 - especially, for some reason, Is it like Today? by World Party and Exterminate by Snap!.

First single would be Limp Bizkit - Take A Look Around, also known as the Mission Impossible theme. On cassette no less.

The second was Original Prankster by The Offspring. Also on cassette.

Of course those were the days when I could get away with wearing an over-sized Green Day hoodie and jeans that would sweep the floor, along with the obligatory wallet on a chain.... Oh what it was like to be cool...

First Single: Black Sabbath "Die Young", on vinyl.

First Album: Motorhead "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" also on vinyl.

Both have been replaced over the years digitally, but I think I probably still have those vinyl records in the roof somewhere, but alas no means to play them.

It seems like I travelled back in time to nearly every one of your personal past experiences & removed your licence to be cool & added to my own before I returned back to the present.

BTW, I loved listening to Bryan Adams music back in the late 80's when he sang that Run to You song & what was the name of the whole album that came with it?

I think brought eh cassette taper for my older brother or he did, but I brought the stuff from the nineties. Forget the name of the album & song, but recall how they referred to themselves, what ever band he had with him as ......Dudes of Leisure.....

As for the very first single I ever brought with my own money. I don't think there were any of those. I did own  a single by Neil Diamond called Heart-light (How embarrassing I feel now!). Not sure what he's doing now, but I recall he was in some film with Jack Black, some guy called Zack & that fellow from American Pie. He had comeback in the mid 90's I know. I recall finding a night club inside the arcade of shopping mall on the Gold Coast that was more of a pub called The Rose & Crown singing one of his old hits. I was just passing through, but felt overwhelmed by this communal spirit shared by all occupants.

I did buy myself a few records, & a lot cassettes tapes. Used to buy a lot movie sounds tracks, like Ghostbusters, Gremlins, High-Lander Two which I found a few years about the release of the film in this country. Which seems like a really odd thing & the only reason I own it, was out of curiosity for a film I hadn't seen yet.

I do remember buying the original Hitch-Hikers Guide To the Galaxy radio series with the very last twenty dollars of pocket money I had been given by my mother . I think it was holiday money & it felt like huge purchase for me at that time. Being as it was found at the only ABC Shop in the Winter-Garden centre on the Queens street mall.

Since then, one of the two large vinyl disc included went missing while I was sharing that house near the city with some old school friends at the time. Not sure who to blame for that, but I had also managed to replace it with another from Ebay. Just had a look at it now, it's in near mint condition...yet. I have never bothered playing it yet. I may do that pretty soon, when & if I set up the record player. I never got one that was built into the stereo system I brought when I first moved here.

That thing is kind of back ward to operate & the disco-lights only light up in green, blue, or red, & sometimes one of each, but it stays that way and doesn't alternate or even flash the colours I've chosen while I play music on it.

Never owned a single in my life! First album (bought for me) was Britney Spears' debut. You'll understand when I say that I was about 12 at the time, and my interest may not have been entirely musical. Even now the opening chords of 'Hit me Baby one more time' make me feel a bit 'funny.'

Never had a huge interest in music really, so it was another four years or so before I felt the urge to buy some music for myself, walked into my local Woolworths and came out with the two coolest albums I could find on the shelves - Prodigy: Fat of the Land and Lenny Kravitz: Greatest Hits.

I know it may read like he was actually in there singing, but it was on what ever medium disc-jockeys prefer. I think did all use singles as well. it would have been easier then to find their most optimum song.

"Smack my Bitch up" is a euphemism for injecting hard drugs, which I believe is what they really meant! See also: "E's are good. He's Ebenezer Good".

Fat of the Land is the first Prodigy album I bought. Good album, still listen to it occasionally. The Shaman ("E's are good.) were proper dogshit! A mate of mine was a big fan when we were young and he played the album daily. Proper dogshit!

Cheers

Uh... which format?

First vinyl album was likely Children's TV Themes by Cy Payne & His Orchestra.
First cassette album was The Hits Album 7 (a double cassette no less).
First CD album was Rock Anthems (https://www.discogs.com/Various-Rock-Anthems/master/623601) (and yes, seeing the year of release clearly stated isn't helping me any).

As for the other... I honestly have no idea which single I bought first. Complete blank - it really is not some bullshit reason to avoid stating something embarrassing as I have no shame. I'll admit to owning some of the worst songs ever recorded (in multiple formats, and filed alphabetically).

I have a copy of the Over There CD, with the video on it, and there's an immense number of novelty songs in my collection. I'm beyond blackmail.  :P

Probably the Ninja Turtles movie soundtrack on cassette, which I got way before I ever got to see the movie, and as I had recently seen the film Grease and was young enough at the time to not really understand the distinction between musicals and regular movies I assumed that all the songs on the tape were musical numbers performed by characters in the movie.

Pretty soon after that it was Cool as Ice by Vanilla Ice, and I also remember buying a copy of 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... by Arrested Development from a friend. I had a slightly odd and embarrassing pre-teen phase of listening to middle aged solo male artists for a while after that; Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel and for some bizarre reason I remember owning a copy of the Mick Jagger solo album Wandering Spirit - I think because at the time one of his songs was getting a lot of airplay on MTV. Most embarrassing of all is probably having a copy of the East 17 album Steam  :-\

But that was all when I was a very young kid and didn't really have a developed taste as such. I consider my first actual single and album purchases that I bought with my own money - on CD no less - as Hey Dude and K by Kula Shaker, shortly followed by 1977 by Ash. The latter I still kind of love to this day. The former not so much (though I still have a nostalgic fondness for it).

My first single was a red vinyl Number of the Beast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-iRf9AWoyE) by Iron Maiden. No shame in starting on Maiden.

Around the World in a Day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PCKYe4g4X8) by Prince was my first vinyl album.  Still holds up as utter genius: but when I first listened, it was ahead of my time.

First cassette album was Meat Loaf's Bad Attitude, which even at the time was not the leader of my collection pack. It contains the rather blunt but memorable rock ballad "Surf's Up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIJQqvN9TWo)", with the subtle, silver-tongued lyric "Surf's up and so am I" (with the female backing singers wailing "I need it so bad" in the background like a pack of sex-starved nymphos). It gets by mostly on the fact he's got a mighty singing voice.

My first album (borrowed, not bought) was an Iron Maiden album too. But soon after I became what was then known as a Cure-head and wasn't allowed to like metal any more. Which is a shame, because Maiden are brilliant.  I bet he pilots and fences in a metal way too.

Might have been Belinda Carlisle - A Woman and a Man. I was 9 y/o and and thought she looked nice on the album cover. I also remembered liking her voice. Looked her up on Spotify just now, and apperantly she also made Heaven's a place on earth. Didn't know that. Still a nice voice.

I also remember owning a copy of Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. Pretty sure I got it thanks to Wonderwall. Remember listening to Cast no Shadow over and over for hours thinking about how it was made and slowly figuring out what the words meant (English is my 2nd language). Still love it now as much as then.

I'm still fond of it - absolutely loved it at the time. I overplayed it at a party so someone poured beer all over it and threw it into the bushes. It still played after that.
