The first single I owned was a Christmas present from my brother (10 years senior). It was 'Toy Dolls' with the seminal classic 'Nellie the Elephant'. I still own it to this day*

The first single I bought myself was Green Door by Shakin Stevens - my Dad made me go up to the counter and pay for it myself, but I didn't want to, and went all shy when the guy at the till spoke to me. I was 12 years old and it was my first time going into town "on my own" (with mates, no adults). I got it for the song Blood Brothers after hearing it heaps on Tony Hawks Pro Skater. If memory serves it was from Bridge Street Records in Walsall.
Was stolen from me by a ex girlfriend when we broke up. I say stolen, it was at her house along with some other stuff of mine and I was too scared to go and get it back. Have since got myself a new copy for nostalgic reasons.

If the Music Police ever did roll up to my door and demand a socially acceptable answer to that question, I would tell them where to go.
If we're talking about actually spending my own money on, the first single was Blondie's Heart of Glass; and the first album would be War of the Worlds; but I was already the proud owner of the first two Muppets albums, A Rolf Harris album and the 7" Action Man single.
I probably only bought one or two more records after this 'cos my first best mate in secondary school had a vast musical knowledge, a great stereo and a humungous record collection (his mum worked for Branson's original Virgin records so he could get just about anything free). I'd just go round his house with a 10 pack of C90s and choose what I wanted him to tape for me. Still got boxes of (largely unplayable now) tapes, but I've replaced most of the core collection on CD and i-tunes .

It pains me to say the first album I owned was Nightflight to Venus by Boney M. Well, I chose it as an Xmas present from my brother. I was with him and my dad when he bought it for me from Our Price records. At the same time I bought for him his choice which was Tonic for the Troops by The Boomtown Rats. So was that the first album I bought?
I can rescue this for me and declare that the first album I actually bought for myself was Remain in Light by Talking Heads which to this day is one of my favourite albums. (I still rate the album graphics by the late great Tibor Kalman's M&Co – I attended a speech by him once. He was a fascinating and very funny guy).

It did indeed! My friend ended up buying it and would sometimes bring it round to listen to.
Nothing to be ashamed about here. It always fascinated me, back when I was a student in the late nineties, that the people who proclaimed that they had always been into (insert moderately obscure indie band here) after one or two snakebites let slip that they owned records by Jive Bunny or Belinda Carlisle.
I used to get a lift to work with a guy who had 3 tapes to play in his car (and he was always playing one of them). They were the Miami Vice soundtrack, a tape with about 20 versions of Axel F on it and the Jive Bunny album.
My favourite was the Axel F one.

I think I was erring towards believing it was a real album right until I saw the sequel movie had an album with a Vanilla Ice track on it, and since then I'm fucked if I can tell either way.

As far as first albums are concerned, my parents bought me a cassette player for Christmas along with ABBA's Greatest Hits (they'd definitely already split up by that point); Parallel Lines by Blondie, which had so many great songs on it I thought that it was a greatest hits collection as well; and a Status Quo compilation that had lots of their greatest hits missing but had some of their early stuff, which just confused me. I'm guessing we must be roughly the same age because your experience more or less matches my own. I was allowed to choose between The Frog Chorus and Band Aid as a Christmas gift. I went for Macca's finest hour but was more interested in Rupert at the time.
The first single I bought with my own pocket money was M/A/R/R/S's Pump up the Volume, which was ultimately left on the record player by the window and melted in the hot sun.

Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist are my fave tracks on the album by quite a large margin, though I pretty much love everything on side one. Only a couple of likes on side two though...
Early Queen records are sadly overlooked classics - Queen, Queen II the aforementioned Sheer Heart Act all the say to News of the World really all wonderful records. Gets a bit more patchy after that.
Since people have been including records bought with money actually earned by working, as a schoolboy, I did 2 weeks of work experience (free slave labour in other words) at Rocks Off, a local independent record shop.
It was the week that License to Ill by the Beastie Boys came out which was the best thing I had ever heard. At the end of the 2 weeks, the manager gave me a copy of the album as a thank you, starting a life-long love affair with the Beastie Boys and hip hop in general.

Oh, go on then: First single- Why Can't This be love by the mighty Van Halen. Album is trickier- I think it was 5150, which I bought on the same day as Batman and the Outsiders issue something in the later thirties with art by Alan Davis.

I was quite fortunate- my parents got me Motorhead 'Iron Fist' album one year, which is ace- presumably my big sister suggested it.

As a young teenager I went into Woolworths seeking a copy of Bryan Adams' 'Run to You' (don't worry, I have seen the error if my ways since). When I approached the counter the attractive young woman explained they were out of stock.
I asked politely when new stock was expected, and at that moment the screws on both sides of my glasses gave, and the lenses simultaneously fell out, landing on the counter in front of this pleasant young lady.
Keeping a perfectly expressionless face, she explained they would be in next Wednesday. I thanked her, picked up my lenses and walked out of the shop.

First album: I think I made a simultaneous pirchase of Now 23 and a Genesis live album (the not-cool Phil Collins iteration, rather than the slightly less not-cool Peter Gabriel iteration). I'm somewhat surprised to find that I can't remember which was the first album proper that I bought for myself. Normally I'm an obsessive about those sorts of details. I copied Jacko's Dangerous off a friend - does that count? I liked that album a lot more than it deserved.
For anecdote's sake, I went on to buy Now 24 a year later at the same time as I finally completed my 2000AD collection (then up to the giddy heights of Prog 900!); the songs on that tape inevitably remind me of my first Slog, reading through progs 1-300 - especially, for some reason, Is it like Today? by World Party and Exterminate by Snap!.

As for the very first single I ever brought with my own money. I don't think there were any of those. I did own a single by Neil Diamond called Heart-light (How embarrassing I feel now!). Not sure what he's doing now, but I recall he was in some film with Jack Black, some guy called Zack & that fellow from American Pie. He had comeback in the mid 90's I know. I recall finding a night club inside the arcade of shopping mall on the Gold Coast that was more of a pub called The Rose & Crown singing one of his old hits. I was just passing through, but felt overwhelmed by this communal spirit shared by all occupants.
I did buy myself a few records, & a lot cassettes tapes. Used to buy a lot movie sounds tracks, like Ghostbusters, Gremlins, High-Lander Two which I found a few years about the release of the film in this country. Which seems like a really odd thing & the only reason I own it, was out of curiosity for a film I hadn't seen yet.
I do remember buying the original Hitch-Hikers Guide To the Galaxy radio series with the very last twenty dollars of pocket money I had been given by my mother . I think it was holiday money & it felt like huge purchase for me at that time. Being as it was found at the only ABC Shop in the Winter-Garden centre on the Queens street mall.
Since then, one of the two large vinyl disc included went missing while I was sharing that house near the city with some old school friends at the time. Not sure who to blame for that, but I had also managed to replace it with another from Ebay. Just had a look at it now, it's in near mint condition...yet. I have never bothered playing it yet. I may do that pretty soon, when & if I set up the record player. I never got one that was built into the stereo system I brought when I first moved here.
That thing is kind of back ward to operate & the disco-lights only light up in green, blue, or red, & sometimes one of each, but it stays that way and doesn't alternate or even flash the colours I've chosen while I play music on it.

Never owned a single in my life! First album (bought for me) was Britney Spears' debut. You'll understand when I say that I was about 12 at the time, and my interest may not have been entirely musical. Even now the opening chords of 'Hit me Baby one more time' make me feel a bit 'funny.'
Never had a huge interest in music really, so it was another four years or so before I felt the urge to buy some music for myself, walked into my local Woolworths and came out with the two coolest albums I could find on the shelves - Prodigy: Fat of the Land and Lenny Kravitz: Greatest Hits.

The Shaman ("E's are good.) were proper dogshit! A mate of mine was a big fan when we were young and he played the album daily. Proper dogshit!

First cassette album was The Hits Album 7 (a double cassette no less).

As for the other... I honestly have no idea which single I bought first. Complete blank - it really is not some bullshit reason to avoid stating something embarrassing as I have no shame. I'll admit to owning some of the worst songs ever recorded (in multiple formats, and filed alphabetically).
I have a copy of the Over There CD, with the video on it, and there's an immense number of novelty songs in my collection. I'm beyond blackmail. :P
Probably the Ninja Turtles movie soundtrack on cassette, which I got way before I ever got to see the movie, and as I had recently seen the film Grease and was young enough at the time to not really understand the distinction between musicals and regular movies I assumed that all the songs on the tape were musical numbers performed by characters in the movie.
Pretty soon after that it was Cool as Ice by Vanilla Ice, and I also remember buying a copy of 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... by Arrested Development from a friend. I had a slightly odd and embarrassing pre-teen phase of listening to middle aged solo male artists for a while after that; Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel and for some bizarre reason I remember owning a copy of the Mick Jagger solo album Wandering Spirit - I think because at the time one of his songs was getting a lot of airplay on MTV. Most embarrassing of all is probably having a copy of the East 17 album Steam :-\
But that was all when I was a very young kid and didn't really have a developed taste as such. I consider my first actual single and album purchases that I bought with my own money - on CD no less - as Hey Dude and K by Kula Shaker, shortly followed by 1977 by Ash. The latter I still kind of love to this day. The former not so much (though I still have a nostalgic fondness for it).

First cassette album was Meat Loaf's Bad Attitude, which even at the time was not the leader of my collection pack. It contains the rather blunt but memorable rock ballad "Surf's Up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIJQqvN9TWo)", with the subtle, silver-tongued lyric "Surf's up and so am I" (with the female backing singers wailing "I need it so bad" in the background like a pack of sex-starved nymphos). It gets by mostly on the fact he's got a mighty singing voice.

My first album (borrowed, not bought) was an Iron Maiden album too. But soon after I became what was then known as a Cure-head and wasn't allowed to like metal any more. Which is a shame, because Maiden are brilliant. I bet he pilots and fences in a metal way too.

Might have been Belinda Carlisle - A Woman and a Man. I was 9 y/o and and thought she looked nice on the album cover. I also remembered liking her voice. Looked her up on Spotify just now, and apperantly she also made Heaven's a place on earth. Didn't know that. Still a nice voice.
I also remember owning a copy of Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. Pretty sure I got it thanks to Wonderwall. Remember listening to Cast no Shadow over and over for hours thinking about how it was made and slowly figuring out what the words meant (English is my 2nd language). Still love it now as much as then.

I had both of those on CD too.
CtE felt a bit like Metallica's Black album. Like it was them moving away from thrash.
Millennium was exciting. It was good to have KJ back as they'd been away for a few years then.
First album I ever bought was Chorus by Erasure. A far cry to what I'm into nowdays!
My earliest music purchases were cassette and I believe the first album I bought with my own actual money (in a brilliant and sadly long-defunct music shop in Torquay called Soundz) was...'Bridge of Spies' by T'Pau. It remains one of my favourite albums to this day.

I'm still fond of it - absolutely loved it at the time. I overplayed it at a party so someone poured beer all over it and threw it into the bushes. It still played after that.
