Help! / Defending Dredd and Comics Milestones
14 April, 2003, 07:57:18 PM
I'm going to a big sf convention this week and as some sort of comics 'expert' (I know I could'nt stop laughing either) I've asked to be on some panels...

One is a balloon debate on who is the nest comic character... So all ammunition why Dredd is much better than Superman, Batman, Spiderman etc greatfully received.

The other is in on 20th Century comic milestones... again any info, links etc please

General / VOICE OF THE FIRE
28 March, 2003, 11:45:11 PM
Just stumbled over this in the Alan Moore newsgroup...

Think it's a def purchase even though the first chapter is in notorious incomprehensible 'ug' language

--

VOICE OF THE FIRE
by Alan Moore & Jos? Villarrubia
with an introduction by Neil Gaiman

Teen Witches, old warriors, mad poets and talking heads. In thirteen
self-contained stories, Voice of the Fire narrates the lives of
extraordinary characters that lived in the same region of England over
the course of 5,000 years. These interconnected stories paint the
landscape of Northampton in a stunning, dark palette. In the tradition
of Kipling, Borges and Schwob, Moore weaves fact and fiction in tales
haunted by lust, ghosts and longing. Top Shelf will offer the first
printing of Moore's masterpiece as a hardcover, illustrated with Jos?
Villarrubia's trademark computer manipulated images.  This first
American edition will also feature new cover art and an introduction
by the award-winning creator of Sandman, Neil Gaiman. Time Out
magazine calls it "Remarkable, savage and, at times unbearably
beautiful," and Locus "A daring, unsettling work of literature."  --
$26.95, 336 pages, Hardcover Novel with 13 Full-Color Plates, ISBN
1-891830-44-9, COMING IN AUGUST 2003

Off Topic / The Tomorrow People / Shed con
18 March, 2003, 05:30:32 PM
Well after weeks of 'I've got to get around to looking at this...' every time I see the triple dvd of The Tomorrow People I won at the Shedcon raffle I've started watching it...

... terrible terrible wooden acting, a boring mogadon plot, vile CSO, the worse plinky plonky music, really crap 'stunts', totally unfunny 'comic relief' ...

I'm having a great time!

2 episodes down, 11 to go (plus extras...)

I'm sure I'm only doing it coz Logan reckoned I'd never watch it all.

First broadcast on the 8th March 1978... Happy Twenty Five years to h2g2... Pity Adams is not here to see though.

Although perhaps it's has grown a bit too familiar of the years lines like "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!" are genius

Well I saw the trailer for The Core yesterday... boy oh boy does this look like some mad shit. The shuttle crash looks worth the addmission price alone.

How did so many decent actors get involved in this madness

"We've got to kick start the planet!" Rock on!

The only thign missing is the dinosaurs that we know MUST be at the centre of the earth.

Help! / Dreddcon Sketches
21 February, 2003, 03:55:27 AM
I've, finally, added some sketches I got at Dreddcon to my web site.

Unfortunately I've no idea who did a couple of them - call it the lateness of the hour, the fact the sketchbook got passed around and more than likely the vast quantity of alcohol consumed.

Thanks again to everyone for their patience when a Orange Shako growled at them to do a sketch, esp the mighty Jock... I'll treasure your minimalist Dredd forever.

The women shot by Phil 'almost as mad as Jacko' Spector has been named as the actress Lana Clarkson who you might have seen in Barbarian Queen and Barbarian Queen II and the spoof schlock Amazon Women on the Moon.

Her website has the message

"Rest in piece beautiful lady, you were a star in heaven and now shine brightly"

Oh dear...

What's the most deranged comic you have ever read...

... for me it's Wild Bill Sankawhasit's Stray Toasters.

I had a burnt toast nightmare today and it all came flooding back...

21 June... Lastest Harry Potter finally published. And it's a third bigger than last time (which was a whopper in itself).

At this rate the series won't finish until 2050 and the final book will be ten volumes in size

When precisely do good things go bad?

Classic example: Scrappy Do
Recent examples: Current series of Buffy and Farscape

And things can jump back... B7 jumped when they brought it back after blowing up the Liberator, but jumped back for the last episode.

Comics:
Preacher... well I'm not sure exactly when but it had to be sometime during the 'spend a year doing so all while he was sheriff in the meat-packing town'
And it never jumped back.

Dredd: Jumps when Ennis writes it then jumps back when Wagner or Rennie return

ABC Warriors: Kaos, nuff said...

Well mine is to write more and draw more and spend less time in this place (ha ha)

Which, like most others, will probably not last past the first week of January.

Anyone else? And how long do you reckon you'll last?
