Megazine / Meg 443: Rough Rider!
21 April, 2022, 08:52:10 AM
Guess I should start this one since no-one else has.

Dredd: Praise Zort! comes to an end with a tease for future developments.

Deathcap: Goya's in a bit of a pickle as her condition has lead to a literal loss of identity, not to mention her
arm, although since the same episode sets up that the shroomers can regrow body parts within a short space of time it's not really that much of a loss
Diamond Dogs: A surprise reverse heel turn for one of the baddies, which would be more shocking if we actually knew anything about them or their motivations. It amused me that the other two members of Jones's crew are so unimportant that their fate doesn't even warrant a passing mention, so I guess they just got killed off-page somewhere?

Lawless: This is pretty much Metta hitting rock-bottom, having thrown away her job on a rigged election and with any attempt to investigate electoral fraud stonewalled by the SJS. Remains to be seen where this is heading but there are so many things in play it's anyone's guess at this point.

Surfer:  The chase continues with our hero pulling some tricky moves to evade capture. My only criticism of this story is it probably should've run in the weekly, as it's a bit too fast-paced for a monthly read.

I haven't read Hawk yet as I've still got the last couple of issues to catch up on.

Prog / Prog 2242 - Judging The Judges!
26 July, 2021, 10:17:58 PM
This week's prog in brief:

Dredd: Satisfying dose of Wagnerian gravitas.

Skip Tracer: Disappointing fridging leaves underdeveloped lead holding baby

Department K: Intriguing escalation (or should that be egg-scalation)

Sinister: Exposition as only Abnett can deliver it

Aquila: A refined mix of problem-solving and extreme violence.

In summary, then: Breezes.

Prog / Prog 2223 - The Root Of All Evil
14 March, 2021, 12:21:33 PM
Thrills Of The Future is plugging the return of Lawless later in the year.

Dredd: Things are coming to a head for Chimpsky as he decides to tackle Zonny head on, and Dredd is on his way. Looks like that inevitable confrontation is coming sooner rather than later

3rillers: I've really enjoyed this as a light-hearted change of pace, there's a charming whimsy to the story which has somewhat absent in the prog of late. Whoever predicted last week the
Robo-Vicar
would be the killer was spot on.

Thistlebone: Not a huge amount happens this week but I really love the choice of cartoon style for the flashback page.

Proteus Vex: The story wraps up with Vex discharged & disgraced, with a bit of story hook concerning the fate of Midnight. I'm guessing this will definitely be back.

Durham Red: Also concludes. This has been a real unexpected highlight for me over the last few months. Willsher's handling of the action has been superb and I feel like Worley has has added a degree of character believability to Red which other writers have struggled to do, even Abnett didn't manage to make her more than a generic wise-cracking badass. Hope we get more from this team sooner rather than later.

We also get a Star Scan of Red courtesy of Pris Bampoh which I really like, has a bit of a Full-Tilt Boogie vibe to it.

Prog / Prog 2222 - Reach For The S.T.A.R.S!
08 March, 2021, 01:51:09 PM
Only skimmed through this so far but one thrill is noticeably absent - the conclusion of Slaine has been pushed back due to art issues, instead we have the start of a new Thr3ller, Nakka Of The S.T.A.R.S by Langridge & McCarthy.

I'm not complaining or anything, great to have Langridge back again even if it's only in a writing capacity, but wasn't Dragontamer already delayed by months to give Manco more time to prepare?

I couldn't find a thread about this, apologies if there is one. So, er...has anyone managed to listen to these new audio drama/podcasts yet?

I attempted to do so earlier on the 2000AD app, and was told I couldn't access them as I wasn't a subscriber - I do actually have a paper sub for the Prog and Meg, but as the app seemingly doesn't recognise this I guess I'm out of luck when it comes to these.

Have any digital subscribers had any better luck?

Prog / Prog 2200 - Beyond The Frontiers Of Future Fiction!
19 September, 2020, 11:51:07 AM
I was planning on being productive this morning, then I heard the letterbox go...

Delightfully fucked-up cover by Tim Napper, if this was related to an actual strip it would be even better.

Your Thrill Of The Future this week is Volume 2 of Hershey, can't wait.

Dredd: New story by Rob Williams and Boo Cook dealing with the aftermath of the latest apocalypse.  Dredd is back on the streets but isn't the man he was, and Maitland may've found out where the judge system's been going wrong all these years. This definitely feels refreshingly low key after the excesses of the past few months.

Future Shock: Omnidetectorists by Rory McConville and Joel Carpenter. A fun nod to a certain TV show (the clue's in the title)

Hookjaw by Alec Worley and Leigh Gallagher. He's back, and apparently
he's grown legs??
I guess this is a reboot rather than a continuation, as the Action Hookjaw is re-contextualised as a retelling of the actual events.

Sinister Dexter: "Fuck me!" is all I can I say after that. I won't say more but by gob has rarely been more smacked than when I read the caption on the final page.

Skip Tracer: So this is back yet again, I guess. It's never risen above being a very average strip for me, and Tharg's choice to have it in regular rotation is somewhat hard to fathom. But I've always liked Paul Marshall's art so I guess I'll stick with it. This one starts in media res with Nolan on the run, maybe it'll go somewhere interesting this time?

Stickleback: Crikey, how long has it been? (Six years according to Barney). This is very much a recap episode following the revelation of Stickleback's true identity, which was certainly necessary after all this time. Great to see this back.

No letters, but the back page is trailing Constanta by Edginton & Trevallion.

Prog / Prog 2198 - Lock & Lode!
05 September, 2020, 01:02:14 PM
Hey, I get to do this now. Only took me 17 years.

Cover: Sinister Dexter drawn by Luke Preece. Nice job, although Finny looks like a revolting hipster with that haircut.

Dredd: A couple of major things happen in this episode, one of which could be considered a significant development in Dredd's world if it sticks. I'm concerned that a reset button might be about to be pushed though, as it feels like things have gone "too far". It's a bit like one of those Dr Who finales when it feels like the writer's got themselves into an impossible situation and there's going to have to be some deus ex machina to return everything back to normal. Let's just say
if Anderson is still dead at the end of next week's finale I'll be extremely surprised.
The Out: A reflective episode looking back on Cyd's journey to this point. This is also wrapping up next week, it's been an unusually low-key and (deliberately) uneventful story for 2000AD, I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

Tharg's 3rillers: This has been my highlight of the prog for the last couple of weeks, it's an intriguingly weird little tale that feels like something John Smith might've conjured up, and the art is absolutely gorgeous. This week episode also features possibly the most grotesque creature yet to appear in the pages of this comic -
Jacob Rees-Mogg! I have to admit the reveal of "Nanny" made me cackle with glee.
Sinister Dexter: Another familiar face from Ray & Finny's past shows up. I've been re-reading this from the very start over the last week, and I have to say I really do miss the variety of art styles we used to get on this strip. The quality wasn't always consistent but it felt...alive. It just makes the art on the current strips feel really flat and functional by comparison. It's competent and does the job of telling the story, but the chaotic, vibrant Downlode of the Simon Davis era feels a long way away now.

Diaboliks: I'm not quite feeling this strip yet and I think it's because I don't really find Solomon and Jenny very relatable as protagonists. They worked as part of an ensemble cast but as the lead characters I'm not so sure. Maybe it's because they're a bit too powerful so nothing really feels like a threat? I'm happy for this to continue as long as it keeps Dom Reardon in work, mind.

Classifieds / DC Thomson Best-Of Annuals (2014)
27 October, 2014, 08:25:56 PM
If anyone's having trouble locating these or isn't in the vicinity of a Sainsbury's stocking them, I've bunged a few up on ebay at the moment. So far I've managed to get the Topper, Beezer and Hotspur collections, if there's any interest in these I might make another trip to see if I can get hold of the others.

I'm selling them at the labelled price plus £2.38 postage.

General / Restricted Files 01 Question
07 October, 2012, 10:41:37 PM
Just a little thing, but it's been niggling at me - how come the first story in Restricted Files 01 (The Judges Graveyard) is credited to Kev O'Neil, when it's very clearly Ron Turner's work? O'Neil's signature is on the first page, but everything else about it, from the shape of the judges helmet to the weird angular lettering looks exactly like it does in Turner's other Dredd strips.

I've always liked Turner's art myself, although I can understand why some people thought it was maybe too old-fashioned for 2000AD at the time. He was a retro-futurist before the term had been invented, mainly by virtue of the fact that his style hadn't really changed since the fifties!

General / That Reminds Me Of This
13 March, 2010, 10:18:07 PM
Sorry if this has come up already, I did do a search but it was fairly inconclusive.

http://thatremindsmeofthis.blogspot.com/

I've just been reading this interesting blog analysing 2000AD and the Megazine from the perspective of someone who's come back to both after a 25 year absence. He's only been going since February but there's a hell of a lot to read already!

So far: impressed by Dredd, unimpressed by Zombo, bemused by Dante and disappointed with the ABCs.

Help! / Artist ID Required!
18 November, 2007, 05:14:43 PM
Hello kind sirs. I wonder if there are any among you would be so kind as to identify the artist(s) responsible for these two sketches, as I've been unable to do so. The only clue seems to be the mysterious signature on the Death pic, "EG"(or is it "AG"?). Cheers;

Hello. I done a review of the most recent Megazine, and it's up here:

This is the first "proper" review I've attempted, so any feedback at all would be appreciated - please feel free to be as rude as you like.

Prog / It's... THE HATEMONGER!
08 December, 2004, 08:05:52 PM
This is possibly my favourite SHOCK! endings of a comic ever.

http://www.geocities.com/spleetle/hatemonger.txt">

I love the way Reed Richards immediately deflates the drama by announcing: "Actually, it's probably not the real Hitler after all, but one of his many doubles!" But why would one of Hitler's doubles still be dressed exactly like Hitler years after the war ended?

General / Tooth-related nightmares

Last night I dreamt our house had been burgled, and some bastard had made off with all the progs I've collected since January.

Anyone else ever have ridiculous nightmares about the state of their comics collection, or just me?

Haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, but I just thought you should know.

"Hellboy or Hulk? Listen to the Five Live debate.

Are comics in fashion again? Simon Mayo talks to critics Roger Sabin, James Swallow and Joel Morris, as well as Jason Kingsley, publisher of 2000AD."

Great final-page twist in this month's DWM strip. I love it when they pull a genuine surprise out of the bag(the death of Ace, the Daleks in "Children Of The Revolution" etc). But this time, it's...

...Really creepy-looking anorexic Cybermen! Hooray!

Turned up in my newsagents this morning. Looking good so far. I'll give it a proper review later(I'm at work right now), but I just thought I'd tease you with the fact that I know what the "big surprise" is, and I'm not telling!

Help! / Identify this strip!
24 May, 2004, 05:45:32 PM
Does anyone know the title of this strip, or where it came from? It was from one of those boy's comic annuals like Hotspur or Victor, but I don't remember which one and haven't been able to find out, as my mum made me give away most of my annuals(sob!)

The plot was about a criminal gang who stage a bank raid, during which one of them shoots dead a clerk who tries to press his alarm button. Anyway, as the story goes on, the members of the gang are all hounded to their deaths by the ghost of the clerk(he appears to them in dreams and shows them how they're going to die), until the gang leader is the only one left. He think he's cheated death, but then a mysterious accident causes his car to plummet over a cliff. He miraculously escapes, but as a helicopter is winching him to safety, he sees the clerk's ghost looking up at him - then his safety harness snaps, and the last image is of him plummeting to his doom...

So, anyone recognise that? I really want to read this one again - it made a deep impression on me as a youngster, as it was one of the very first "action"(not Action) strips I ever read. Pretty scary stuff as well.
