DOMINIQUE LAVEAU VOODOO CHILD #1 - If Saucer Country was indicitive of the quality of the new Vertigo, I don't have much hope for this.
Really? Because I found Saucer Country to be quite enjoyable. I liked the set up, the characters, and the presentation. There is a lot of places the series can go. Between Spaceman, Fairest, and Saucer Country I'm not doing too bad with Vertigo right now. I didn't care for the Voodoo Child preview in the The Unexpected anthology one-shot though, so I gave it a pass.
Yeah..sorry. I liked the premise, but thought the way it was laid out was very clunky, and not really well-written. It was the poor execution that lost me. And to be honest, I would say that about pretty much all the Cornell I've read. I'm just not on his bandwagon, though I've tried...repeatedly. I will still try another issue, as I want nothing more than to start enjoying Vertigo books again.
But for me, they're fading fast. My two favourite current Vertigo series (Scalped and Northlanders) are ending soon. Spaceman is half-done. Fairest and Saucer Country were really weak (In my humble opinion only, of course), and I have no hopes for Dominique based on the previews released so far. I will give the New Deadwardians the benefit of the doubt though those previews haven't bowled me over either. Then there's I, Zombie, which I've always felt was just mediocre, and Fables, which somehow changed from one of the very best comics on the stands to an incomprehensible mess in the space of two years. That leaves Sweet Tooth, which still kicks me in the pants with every issue, as the only monthly Vertigo book that I'm still enjoying. I never thought in a million years that I would only like one Vertigo comic.
