I went to FP London Wednesday with a friend for a bit of birthday shopping.
I got:
Issues #11 and #12 of Clint.: (Yes I'm behind.) Not bad overall, but much as I like Kick-Ass 2 it went to an extremely nasty place. Too far Millar, too far. Part of me wants to stop reading for that, but I'll admit I'm still curious to see how it works out, and the pros in the story outweigh the cons. I avoided Rex Royd, but Jake Ellis is still good. The rest, okay.
They also had a bargain box of stuff, and I picked up:
Xtinct. - I wasn't acquained with this series at all, but the black and red cover caught my eye. (Interesting how one's eyes can pick out a 2000 AD/Meg comic just by the colour scheme.) Then I saw the recognisably D'Israeli art, and at under £2 it seemed worth a punt.
On reading it, I'll say- nice dinosaur art. Fairly light hearted stuff considering the subject matter of
mass genocide, and amusing characters particularly the raptor character. The bit where Rex
found enlightenment, apparently growing a second brain in the process and the ending had me going 'say wha...?' I didn't think it was very good, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Star Trek Countdown: I've read bad reviews on this here, but I enjoyed the Star Trek film and again, being on offer for a couple of quid it seemed worth it. I'll admit, I enjoyed it, although I think they should have done more with the story.
War Machine: Iron Heart: I'm not well acquainted with the character. I probably wouldn't gravitate to the character normally but again, £2.00, and this one being a lovely wrapped up hardback, it seemed an excellent deal.
I guess he seemed to basically be Iron Man but with big guns, but on reading, that doesn't really do the character justice. For one thing this is a proper damaged soldier character, with a very different personality to Tony Stark, although he is damaged too in different ways. He certainly doesn't hold back on the ultra-violence like Iron Man, and seems to be a much greyer character from a moral point of view. I haven't finished it yet I'm enjoying it so far. Some lovely art too.
