Hm, I fail to link to MOST of these videos, something about Sony and 'your country'. More frustrating because I've - grudgingly - adopted Chrome, in order to get ANY joy with video links. Grrr.
Perhaps using a phone puts me in the minority.

It amazes me that something can sound so cool as this...

can be ruined in such a way as this...

Whatever happened to Rico, Dolman and Cadet Paris? I'm sooo out of the loop.

Actually don't get me started on Coldplay and their magpie ways.

Pixies - Where Is My Mind

when gussied up sounds like this:

and also sounds a bit like this:

Thanks.  Browsing this thread made me recall the horror of All Saints covering 'Under the Bridge'.  Up to now I had locked it away in a part of my brain marked 'NEVER TO BE RECALLED'.

If you don't want to face this horror, don't click this link:

Oh god, even the destruction of the awesome riff at the start makes me want to scream!!!!    >:(

There's seldom been a successful girl-group as resolutely talentless as All Saints*, and this is one of their most embarrassing dirges.  But I have to admit that Melanie Blatt (?) looks very nice in that otherwise ghastly video.

*yes, I'm including Atomic Kitten and B*Witched in this.

The Jenny Frost incarnation of Atomic Kitten weren't too bad - mainly because Jenny Frost was in it and she's awesome.

I think the Spice Girls are worse than Atomic Kitten. I don't think they ever released a decent record.

I had the dubious pleasure of being dragged to the cinema by my girlfriend of the time to see Spiceworld.  Fuck me, that's a dreadful film.  If ever you want an example of a disgustingly obvious cash-in, that's it.  She loved it.

I got my own back by taking her to see all three re-releases of the original Star Wars trilogy.  She hated it.

I HATED that Kid Rock Skynyrd song where he just lazily stripped out the melody of Sweet Home Alabama and sang over it. Ugh.

No, he shat on both sweet home Alabama, AND Warren Zevon's 'Werewolves of London'.
I'd hate for the full extent of his shiteness to be overlooked.

Dylan shat all over that great Hendrix song with similarly strained vocals and odd phrasing.

Erm...it was actually Dylan's song covered by Hendrix....but hey, that undoubtedly won't make any difference to which you prefer. ;)
I don't have a drinking problem.  I drink, I get drunk, I fall over.  No problem!

Definitely Not Mister Pops

When I first heard the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb, I just assumed it was some kind of novelty comedy song from the internet instead of a serious artistic endeavor by an actual band.
You may quote me on that.

Hey, I really liked that cover!  Ok, the original is up there with 'best tracks of all time ever', but I really enjoyed their take on it.

Remember to squeeze your arse cheeks tight during this, otherwise you might prolapse. Dylan shat all over that great Hendrix song with similarly strained vocals and odd phrasing.

It was the other way round, I believe. Bob Dylan wrote and recorded 'All Along the Watchtower' first for his album 'John Wesley Harding'; it appeared on Hendrix's 'Electric Ladyland' nearly a year later...

You're all fact ninjas, chaps, but I was trying (and failing) to be funny. The cover versions I despise most are examples of Jo Wiley Live Lounge Syndrome - where white indie acts take soul, hip hop, rock, or electronic tunes and subject them to the stripped down, just vocals and a guitar treatment. It's meant to highlight the craft of song writing, but always strikes me more as asserting the primacy of a pernicious, homogenising aesthetic, and a smugly ironic laugh up the sleeve at stuff that isn't REAL MUSIC.

That aesthetic's so ubiquitous nowadays that girl singers with breathy vocals covering old songs on acoustic guitars are the new default choice of music on TV adverts, particularly for the type of amorphous and useless companies who don't actually make anything - telecoms, finance, utility companies ... y'know, evil, cynical bottom feeders. It's as if they have to use such whimsical, fey accompaniment to stop you thinking about how they have absolutely no social utility whatsoever.

I thought that it was funny. I'm just repeating myself but Pop Idol/The X Factor have a lot to answer for. Leona Lewis, Matt Cardle, Alexandra Burke etc. All taking a song and bludgeoning it to death.

Sorry, I'm very tired today and it flew right over my head, coupled with the fact that, in the past, I've had to physically point to dates on album covers to prove that the Hendrix version wasn't the original... I shall try to sleep soon, I promise.

It is sad when a song begins like this...

http://youtu.be/wrIP3DpYOV0

then turns into this...

http://youtu.be/ppYgrdJ0pWk

but then is warped into this...

:'(

Of course, the best version of this song can be heard two minutes and 25 seconds in on this clip

An old-school, no-bullshit, boys-own action/adventure comic reminiscent of the 2000ads and Eagles and Warlords and Battles and other glorious black-and-white comics that were so, so cool in the 70's and 80's - Buy the hardback Christmas Annual!
