Quick question for all you metal heads out there.

I keep getting ads on Facebook about Avenged Sevenfold and now Amazon is emailing me recommendations for them.

They are not a band I know anything about, so the question is are they any good?

As a reference point I like Metallica (which is why I think I am getting these targeted ads) plus also Iron Maiden, Guns n' Roses, Def Leppard and Faith No More.

They're fairly popular, I believe.
I saw them support Iron Maiden several years back and to be honest I found them rather generic, without any particularly memorable songs.

My advice, give them a spin on Youtube and see if they float your boat!  :)

They started out as a kind of metalcore or screamo-ish band, but then evolved or devolved (depending on how you feel about the genres) into a sort of GnR/Maiden/Metallica worship-type band. Musically they're talented, but the vocalist is just an atrocious singer.

Faith No More is my favorite band of all time, btw! Awesome to see other fans.

One of mine too.  :)

I've had the misfortune of seeing Avenged Sevenfold a couple of times as a friend likes them. I wasn't impressed.
Dumb all over, a little ugly on the side.

When you say worship-type - worshipping GnR/Maiden/Metallica, or christian metal?

Also intrigued how a band can, lets say, "pay homage" to Metallica, Maiden and GnR given they all have pretty different sounds and levels of heaviness.(?)

I see a lot of the young folk these days with tattoos and T shirts of them.  But I don't imagine they're for the older folks like me.

Didn't their drummer sadly pass away ? Anyway whilst I can't pretend I know that much about them  I did enjoy this video.

The Justice department has a good re-education programme-it's called five to ten in the cubes.

He did. When I saw them ex Dream Theatre drummer Mike Portnoy was playing with them.
