But what about those that don't make the grade, that don't have the talent or the family name to make it to this prestigious establishment? For them, there's LOWBORN HIGH, a rundown inner-city comprehensive that is often struggling with funding, but its pupils can still be capable of some truly amazing feats. Androgeus Frost has recently joined the school, becoming friends with Maisy, Ali and Drill.

In 2150 a catastrophic war led to 70% of Britain's population being wiped out. Strontium 90 fallout led to an increase of children being born with strange mutations. Hated by average humans, the mutants faced terrible oppression when politician, Nelson Kreelman, introduced a series of anti-mutant laws enforced by a brutal police force.

In 2167 the mutants decided to fight back. Amongst their ranks was a young boy with named Johnny Alpha with white blank eyes and a mutant power that grants him a series of powers, including the ability to see through many surfaces. Driven by personal tragedy, Johnny has a very personal reason wanting to topple the regime and bring Kreeler down.

Co-written by Alan Grant (Batman)and John Wagner (A History of Violence) and featuring the artwork of Carlos Ezquerra (Judge Dredd), this collection features the explosive origin of Johnny Alpha in 'Portrait of a Mutant', a tale widely considered to be the greatest Strontium Dog story of all.

That's a very strong line-up for best-of 5. A recent Dredd with gorgeous Weston art. Zombo. Swimming in Blood. Missionary Man. I've no idea if these books are moving the needle in the US, but I bloody hope so.

3 titles that are pretty much essential (well, to me anyway).  That Scream! volume has a tidy price tag on Amazon (£75!) but then again the page count justifies it.  Can forgive the fact that I've already got the 13th Floor volumes.

Stront in hardback with possible some of the strongest stories of the run.  Aye, that's another for sure.

... and Hellman.  Again the Battle volumes really do stand up well, especially the hardbacks. With some gorgeous Dorey artwork that one is one to look forward to.

As I've said elsewhere, I'd like Rebellion to give Rogue Trooper the hardback treatment too.  Gibbons, Wilson, Ewins and Kennedy all produced absolutely amazing artwork.  Then again this was at the height of Tooth's early 80's run so it's hardly surprising.  Guess I'll have to add this to the 'never going to be realised dream' list alongside Ian Kennedy's incredible Dan Dare run.   :(

At that size and price, it just has to be a reprint of the complete run (or as near as), doesn't it?  I can't see what else it could be.

If it is the entire run, it'll be interesting to see how it's done. I'm not sure Rebellion would have the right to reprint eg ads, but it should be able to do all the covers and strip pages. And 75 quid is a big COUGH COUGH, but then I've bought Marvel books at a similar price point. (I mean, they have more pages, but they also have a larger audience than Scream will ever have.)

Essential Judge Dredd (Volume 7): Tour of Duty Book 1 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Essential-Judge-Dredd-Tour-Duty/dp/1837860955) - Paperback, 224 pages, 4th January 2024

After Dredd's discovery of a mutant branch of his bloodline during Origins, the lawman has started to take a closer look at Justice Department's treatment of those unfortunates warped by the legacy of the Atomic Wars. Mutants are currently forbidden entry into Mega-City One, and exiled to facilities and townships in the irradiated wasteland, but Dredd believes it's time the law was changed – but is even he prepared for the turmoil he's about to unleash?

The stories collected in this volume affect the Dredd strip for years to come, and features work by writer John Wagner (Button Man) and artists Colin MacNeil (Essential Judge Dredd: America), Kev Walker (Star Wars), Patrick Goddard (Battle Action), and Rufus Dayglo (Tank Girl).

Oh nice to see the choice for Essentials 7 (and I assume 8?) as Tour of Duty. An epic I feel rather gets overlooked between Origins and Day of Chaos and one I think is better than both (indeed its tussling for my fav Dredd epic) so nice to see it getting a place in the spotlight ahead of lots of potential alternatives.

I also think its a great way to showcase numerous different elements of Dredd's world and his story. Nice choice.

No way!

<Checks price> No way!

A must purchase for those of us who's arteries are hardening quicker than the ink is drying at the printers, but honestly, I am not a huge fan of the gargantuan tome format.
I'd have loved this to be a series of 3 - 4 hardbacks.

Now the game is afoot in trying to secure a copy lower than the RRP...

I must say that I disagree with Link Prime and do prefer the big, bulky volumes which contain everything in one edition. I would personally call for more of them and I don't mind paying a higher price for these complete books. What do others think?

Case Files approaching Origins means either:
1. We're getting seriously caught up with the modern stuff now!
2. Origins was actually ages ago and it just only feels recent to an old duffer like me.

It was 06-07.

In '06: Twitter was founded, the Wii launched, Pluto got re-classified (to a dwarf planet), Google bought YouTube and Steve Irwin died.

To a 17-year old, it was a lifetime ago.

Celebrating 40 years since IPC launched the UK's most iconic 'horror' anthology, this single volume collects all of the strips included in the 15-issue run of Scream!

Produced 'from the depths' of King's Reach Tower by the mysterious 'undead' editor Ghastly McNasty, the first issue of Scream! was unleashed on 24th March 1984. More tongue-in-cheek than horrific, the comic was an immediate hit with younger fans as it included a pair of fake vampire fangs attached to the cover and a number of fantastic new strips from such talents as Alan Moore, John Wagner, Jose Ortiz, Cam Kennedy, Tom Tully, Alan Grant and Eric Bradbury.

I was curious to see how that would stack up. What surprised me is how compact Nemesis is, coming in at about 800 pages (which splits neatly across five books). Sláine is sprawling: close to 2500 pages. So that'd be a dozen volumes of this size (and I do wonder if there would be a drop of in sales after Horned God).

Dante surprised me, though – I knew it was hefty, but I didn't realise its page count rivalled Sláine's – from what I can tell, it's around 1800. So that'd make for nine deluxe volumes.

I'd love to see it, but to be honest I'm happy enough with the Hachette volumes for HC 2000 AD. And I'd be concerned about the series just stopping, given that we'd get, what, maybe a book a year? Nine years seems a punt, to say the least, even for one of my favourites.

(Mona Plankhurst diving through a block war - Prog 2263 - is a strong contender for personal favourite, though.)

Quote from: rs_jr on 07 August, 2023, 04:01:00 AMI really hope Dante and Slaine get the same treatment nemesis definitive edition is getting

I'm still hopeful that they continue/expand the "Search & Destroy" Volumes (especially the web shop exclusives - nice)

I think they will continue with the Strontium Dog volumes although I wish that there could be more than just one a year. I would also really like to see Slaine given the deluxe Nemesis treatment with improved repro for the earlier stories (although I take on board Indigo Prime's concern about the length of time it could take to finish). In my humble opinion, deluxe hardcover books for the most iconic stories is the way to go.

I'd just like to see Slaine released in a uniform edition, with numbered volumes and a slightly more logical split between them. IIRC, Warrior's Dawn doesn't include the last couple of Belardinelli stories. Whereas to my mind, Kincaid/McMahon/Belardinelli is one era of the strip, and Fabry/Pugh/Pugh/Barney McGrew/Cuthbert/Dibble/Grubb is another.

THE CROSSOVER 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING!

What if the old Battle Action comic was merged with 2000 AD in the early '80s? That's the question posed by this all-new collection that reveals the answer is - action-packed thrills by the bucket-load. It takes old Battle Action strips and reworks them as 2000 AD-appropriate adventures, while remaining true to their original concept and continuity.

This kick-ass crossover sees Judge Dredd feature in a brand-new reimagining of Action's most controversial strip - Kids Rule O.K., and also includes Darkie's Mob, Death Game 2049 and Major Eazy amongst others.

NOT from the House of Tharg, but four years after volume 1 appeared, DCT's second bigged-up reprint of two Starblazer digests has materialised.  Check back in 2027 for news of volume 3...

Starblazer: Space Fiction Adventures in Pictures vol. 2 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Starblazer-Space-Fiction-Adventures-Pictures/dp/1845359690) - Paperback, 144 pages, 25th October 2023

STARBLAZER Volume 2 Interstellar Space Fiction Adventure in Pictures! Beaming down from outer space and into your hands is Starblazer Volume 2! This astronomical anthology collects two classic Starblazer issues from DC Thomson's extra-terrestrial archives: The Web of Arcon by Mike Knowles, illustrated by Carlos Pino and John Martin, and The Death Reaper by Grant Morrison, illustrated by Enrique Alcatena and Keith Robson. These two vintage issues from 1979 and 1984 have been blown up to full-graphic novel.

Also included in this volume are an exclusive interview with legendary artist Carlos Pino (Commando, 2000 AD's Judge Dredd), cover gallery, and foreword by Doctor Who screenwriter and comic author Paul Cornell.

The Web of Arcon - Reconnaissance ships patrolled the dark recesses of the Galaxy. As these ships were largely automatic, the crew spent long periods doing nothing. But on his first deep space trip, the newly commissioned Lieutenant Janus was about to encounter The Star Queen, a spaceship long thought lost and destroyed. Well, the truth about its fate was stranger – and more dangerous – than fiction! First published Starblazer #12, 1979.

The Death Reaper - Mikal R. Kayn was a policeman. He was forcibly retired by the Republic of the United Worlds' Department of Justice, Star Cops, for methods to be found in no book... and a slight medical problem – he was all but blind. However, being medically blind didn't stop Kayn from becoming a Private Investigator, in fact, the Justice Department were delighted, because it got him off their backs. Well, almost... on March 23, 2284, Kayn's old partner, Affa, still a Galactic Policeman, was in the middle of an investigation and he needed Kayn's help! First published Starblazer #141, 1984.

The volume is once again capped off with an interstellar cover by Neil Roberts (2000 AD, Warhammer, Commando).

"Foster snuck out one last piece of news: He's drawing the Dredd strip in this year's 2000 AD Holiday edition, out December 13! And with that, we're done!"

Yay! He sounds like a very humble droid. Crediting Chris Blythe with holding together art that "dips in places". To my mind, Foster is already well on the road to becoming one of the greats, and channels bits of Bolland and Robinson. He's perfectly suited to the strip.

I hope something comes of this other than Maitland being crushed, Dredd shrugging with "at least you tried" and everything returning to the status quo. It could be a good source of tension to have a sector that is different and yet the rest of the city not shifting accordingly. Or it could even become an enclave.

Completely agree. Regicide is up there with one of the worst Dredd trades I've ever read. Wasn't a fan of End of Days either, and I still find myself caught cold with the entire Hershey storyline. Sad really, used to be one of my favourite writers, but the continuous 'Extended Williams Universe' seems to keep dropping clanger after clanger for me.

Maitland - I like the character as an Acc-Div Judge - so Carry the Nine worked very well, I thought. What I don't understand is why Maitland then has to also be used as a gun-toting action hero Judge.

I never liked La Reine Rouge, as a villain. Far too Bond-esque for my liking. Endless vat-grown Orlok clones just devalues the currency of Orlok.

The Hard Way was one of the worst stories because it committed too many crimes against storytelling. You can argue about whether a "roster of specialty villains" montage is a good or a bad idea, but then it just breaks the rules of staging too often. On the one hand, we're in a cramped submersible locale, where Dredd and co. can't see what's coming, but then on the other we've got villains who can magically see the entirety of Atlantis from wherever they're standing. Often, the backdrop is just left out of the frames entirely, which adds to the sense that we're not really anywhere - but we certainly shouldn't be in Atlantis.

(Dredd then coincidentally gets magically transported to The Web in "Regicide", and when Maitland rocks up she's like "oh - there you are! Ho hum." It seems careless.)

End of Days I did enjoy - especially on a second read-through. It's bonkers, but it's good bonkers.

got to agree that in principle, a "defund the police" parallel story is a good starting point - one Wagner and Grant would/could have had fun with.

The danger is the Garth Ennis ending - he did it with the Democracy storyline and with Helter Skelter -- the citizens should know their place and strong men are always required to pull your fat out the fire when the next bogey man comes along.

I;d say I'll be interested in what comes of it, but I;ve not been enthused by any of Williams Dredds, so I'll hope for an occasional Wagner or N-AI-Mand getting his algorythms synced up again

Complete Button Man Apex

Of Arthur Ranson Apex

I'm really torn as I LOVE his Anderson... but come on complate Button Man original reprint... wow...
Button Man is a great story but it's on Anderson where he really gets to go wild with the art. A Ransom art book without any of those big splash pages from Satan would be a shame.

I get the feeling Wagner would have kept this kind of storyline bubbling away in the background and then revealed it to be a front for something else entirely.

On the one hand the reader's interest in this kind of story is always "how are they going to wrap it up without trashing the very basis of the strip?"; on the other, once you build up to a certain point you really do have to wrap it up, and it's very difficult to satisfactorily end a storyline that promises to change everything without actually changing everything (which is why Day of Chaos ended the way it did)

Reprinting the immediately sold-out Judge Dredd by Brian Bolland Apex Edition this Masterpiece Edition is expanded and reformated for a wider audience.

Judge Dredd by Brian Bolland: Masterpiece Edition – Acclaimed as one of the greatest artists of his generation for his work on such titles as Camelot 3000 and Batman: The Killing Joke, Brian Bolland's work on Judge Dredd helped catapult both the series and Bolland himself to international acclaim.

This book will include pages from the Judge Dredd epics; The Cursed Earth, The Day the Law Died, The Judge Child Quest, and Bolland's masterpiece Judge Death Lives. Also included is a gallery of covers ranging from 2000 AD to the Judge Dredd reprints published by Eagle Comics which brought Brian to the attention of American readers and show off Bolland's inventiveness and sardonic humour.

Sorry - late to this thread.

I am wondering what "expanded and reformatted" means?

Does that mean there will be additional content over and above what is in the "normal" Apex edition?

Having forked out, what was it, £80?, £100? already, I not keen to buy a slightly different version.

Now, having resigned her position as Marshal, Metta faces a new kind of fight, a political battle for the mayorship of Badrock.

But without Metta enforcing the law, things aren't looking good for Badrock. The mysterious Mr Roke continues to establish a hold over the citizens of the town through his protection racket, the town's major employer, Getz, is conducting shady experiments with potentially disastrous consequences, and the SJS continues to work to undermine the fragile balance that Lawson managed to establish before her resignation.

I think Thaw-as-Morse was cited as a specific influence on the strip, and Morse was huge on TV at that time.  Thaw was about fifty at this point.

In Flashback, Armitage is in his 20s in or around the year 2080, which in 2146 would make him in his 80s or possibly 90s.

I remember that... but Armitage always seemed a bit more likely to give someone a smack in the gob than a direct Morse-analogue would, hence leaning more towards Regan in my head! :)

Mixed feelings if so. I'm no fan of the Regened progs, but thinking long-term, it's probably not a good thing if an experiment to bring in new, younger readers is deemed a failure.

I don't enjoy the regen progs much either. But I'm not the target readership.  I don't know how the all-ages thing has worked out financially but I'm guessing not that well.

It would be lovely to have a version of 2000ad that appeals to kids but maybe that ship sailed in the 80s?

My understanding of the performance of the regen prog is that they were the best selling progs during the year. Maybe this might be indication that Rebellion is prepared to go solo on them

The intention is laudable.
I was just never on board with the publication stratagem, nor impressed by even a casual skim of the majority of the material.
Title: Re: Forthcoming Thrills - 2024

It's all just speculation, bar what we've been told (the Progs outsold standard Progs, at least for a time) and what we can see (four reprint volumes, and a bunch of strips compiled from spin-offs into the standard Prog).

It's interesting that Monster Fun's frequency has gone up. I'd assume – certainly hope – that's down to sales. And the monthly (IIRC) cadence gives it more scope for strips that continue across multiple issues (although I was slightly surprised by how much of the page count was given over to those).

More broadly, I've disliked Regened for a while now, but only because of the material rather than the concept. I really liked it at the start. And it's not like it's down to what's for kids and what isn't. I'll still happily read The Phoenix when I actually get the chance.

So hard to know what to think, really. My ideal would be for Regened to continue four times a year or so, but for the line-up to be very different from recent editions. (More Pandora would be great, because Roger Langridge, although that strip not returning after the longer run may or may not say anything about viability, I suppose...)

Always a question with Regened regards stories which could easily be incorporated into the Prog proper. Early 2000AD was geared younger than today and was a product of its time, but seems the majority of stories could be made appropriate for younger audiences by simply toning down gore or being tactful in alluding to such details (the old reaction panel to something offscreen, e.g.)

It's the difference between being mature (themed for older audience) and adult-oriented, the latter usually shorthand for something inappropriate for kids per se.

Rather than a semi-separate Regened revamp every few months, the Prog could easily run an 'all-ages month' each year which largely continues business as usual except for toning down oh-so-slightly.

The four issues of the month would feature contained stories/arcs, one-shots up to 4-parters, marking a jumping on point and recent enough to be accessible for grabbing any missed issues.

That said, expecting a kid to wait patiently 11 months for further content might be a stretch...

Comics are a hard enough sell as it is. They need some kind of momentum to have any chance. Regened gets away with its weird schedule because it's part of the standard Prog. So subscribers get it anyway, as do collectors, and the logo probably tempts people who enjoyed 2000 AD in the 1970s and/or who want to try it on their kids.

Really, Regened would be better as its own thing. But as various folks have noted here, getting to that stage is hugely difficult these days. (Hell, I'm surprised Monster Fun is doing as well as it is. Not because of the quality of the material, but because it is relentlessly faced weirdly – at least as I perceive it – in stores. Every WHSmith I've seen it in has racked it with 2000 AD, rather than next to The Beano or The Phoenix. Although maybe that's at Rebellion's request, to have it nearer eg Panini Marvel reprints.)

Thoughts:

- Hoping Nemesis goes OOP in HC, so I'm not tempted to buy that story yet again
- Fiends: lovely to see this getting a collection; I wish it didn't have 'volume 2' so prominently on the front. Will buy this anyway, but may hang on in case it's in the UC.
- Dreadnoughts: Yay. And I really hope there's a webshop HC to match my volume 1.

Also:

And an overseas audience. Quite a few folks from the US say they find it hard to engage with classic 2000 AD because it's in black and white. Although that didn't stop many of them from buying Walking Dead, but there you go. (Density appears to be the other blocker. Because the stories are packed so tightly, some folks not used to British comics can find them a little overwhelming, apparently.)

I bought the original SSR collection, and the special hardback, and I can see myself buying this new colour omnibus.  I can also see a full colour Strontium Dog coming a little while down the track after the hardback Strontium Dog has been completed. That's a reasonably finite set of stories to tackle.  Perhaps the Rogue Trooper movie will prompt full colour releases of classic RT too, at least in part.  IDW already made a start on that.

Dredd is an interesting one to consider.  There is a heap of B&W stories to tackle if you want to do anything, but equally a plethora of full colour material to entice the reader, and perhaps little value trying to make the quirky early stories more attractive.  Rebellion could pick a random point, e.g. Apoc War, and start colouring from there; even jumping around and publishing volumes out of order to get the good stuff out first.  Again, IDW already released a full colour Apoc War volume so there's a little bit of a start in place already.

Now I think about it, I'd be all over a full colour Meltdown Man book.

It's strange. So much of this comes down to your own personal background. I was really happy with the current Tharg (I _think_ Matt?) being a lot more relaxed than their predecessors  regarding black and white, giving creators more flexibility regarding the visual appearance of strips. Some just work better without colour.

But, yeah, that certainly isn't close to being universal. I've seen quite a few Reddit threads with people asking where they can eg get the "full colour" versions of Dredd, and being quite surprised when told there aren't any.

I must say that I prefer classic black and white stories to stay faithful to their original form and not be revisited unnecessarily. However, I did buy the fairly recent coloured Halo Jones book and thought it was great. Probably will upgrade my Stainless Steel Rat to this new colour edition if it comes out in hardcover.

I'm fairly certain that all of the 2000AD episodes were included in the Eagle reprints. However, I doubt that the colouring from the Eagle editions will be used because the panels were reformatted to fit the different-proportioned pages (some panels were even "extended" with extra bits added), so the colouring wouldn't line up.

I think Carlos's black and white work takes colour well. The Essential Dredd Apocalypse War volume was pretty good, with a fairly flat colour scheme which I think is a good fit.

I'd like to see Carlos's Strontium Dog coloured. I recently bought the first two of the new hardbacks mainly for the colour spreads in the early stories. The reprint could be better I guess? But they are still pretty lush. And currently less than half price, I think.

Reflecting on the imminent Nemesis Book 2 though... you could possibly get away with colouring Kev O'Neil's chapters but not Talbot's IMO - too much texture. I think I'd stick with B&W throughout. Actually I kind of want to see Kev's episodes coloured! Oh no!

I wouldn't say it's superior to the new hardback. I just have a preference for the original art in B&W. I have the original Rebellion omnibus from 2007 - all 3 books for only £11.99! Paper quality is good and the blacks are black but there are no colour covers, everything is B&W, and the page size is tiny.
I just have a soft spot for the original art as it was one of my favourites when I first started reading 2000AD.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Stainless Steel Rat, since the prequel novel A Stainless Steel Rat is Born was one of my top fav books as a kid.

It does sound cool coloring this, usually I stick with b&w but 2000AD has such a good track record, colorized stuff looks great so far. And for example I don't like the coloring on The Walking Dead's new versions, it can miss pretty easily.

Ah, rats! (Stainless Steel ones.)  I was hoping for a brand new colouring job.  The Eagle editions will be 'bodged' to fit the dimensions of a US comic book, won't they?  (I suppose that works better for the modern reprint size.)  As Le Fink says, the flat colouring in the Apoc War volume is rather good.  Fantagraphics are doing a great job going the same way with their Carl Barks library issues.

Rebellion presents three action-packed stories from the legendary Lion comic, all featuring the work master of chiaroscuro-style black-and-white art - José Antonio Muñoz.

In 1973, Muñoz worked on three short-lived strips in Lion. A Stitch in Time follows the adventures of a young boy named Stitch Cotton and his alien friend, Varl, after they steal a time machine from the sinister space-master, Mr. Universe. Lost in Limbo Land (written by 2000 AD regular, Chris Lowder), follows Barry Smith - a studious bookworm who is struck by lightning and flung into a world of Norse myth and legend. The final strip, Sark the Sleeper, sees a starship commander accidently woken from hypersleep by two boys who are completely unaware that they passengers flying through deep space in search of a new home.

Frank Pepper had a lengthy career writing for British comics. From the 1930s onwards he wrote for a wide variety of story papers including The Champion, Knockout, and The Comet. He is best known as the creator of Roy of the Rovers for Tiger and Captain Condor for Lion. Other well-known strips he worked on include The Spellbinder and Dan Dare. He died in 1988.

So this Hawk thing is Hawk the Slayer, yeah? I know Garth Ennis wrote a limited edition series but it seems like a strange thing to go into the prog.

I hope it's great and I also kind of hope it's a test run. Half of me wishes Tharg would cross the streams a little more. I mean, I don't want the Prog to become infested with everything Battle, Action, Misty, Smash, etc. But it's not like UK comics don't have a tradition of mergers. And—

OK, I just want more Black Beth. Maybe that would have been a simpler thing to say.

Maybe they see Hawk as the replacement for Slaine and it's easier to get people interested in an established title rather than start a new one from scratch with the chance we won't like it

It ain't no A Life Less Ordinary. That's for sure.

It might have come down to Alec Worley going, "Ooo gives us a go! Gives us a go!" & Tharg thought, "Let's run it in the prog & see what happens."

Feral & Foe & Kingmaker have proven that there is room in the line up for a fantasy strip that isn't Slaine.

Any chance of a Black Beth crossover?

BATTLE ACTION FORCE TREASURY EDITIONS:

Battle Action Force, was published weekly from October 1983 to November 1986 by IPC Magazines limited, and brought together some of the greatest talents in the British comics industry of that time, both on the editorial and illustrative fronts including names like Gerry Finley-Day, Geoff Campion and Cam Kennedy. Included within its pages were the adventures of "Action Force", created by British toy manufacturer, Palitoy.

Four heroic Action Force teams: infantry specialists Z Force, ocean based Q Force, infiltration specialists the SAS and orbital guardians Space Force protected the world against the evil machinations of Baron Ironblood, The Black Major and their army of brainwashed Red Shadows.

Now, for the first time in over forty years, Total Toy Books, with kind permission from Hasbro and in collaboration with Rebellion Publishing and Skeletron, are proud to announce an officially licensed reprint of the Action Force tales from Battle Action Force collected in a series of deluxe sized 'treasury editions.'

With original issues difficult to find and expensive to purchase in full, this is a collection not to be missed by fans of the original series or for those who only discovered the existence of the comic in more recent times.

More details about this exciting series will be revealed in the coming weeks. Sign up to our mailing list below to be the first to find out more about this forthcoming series.

I think you might be very wrong there. Action Force is a dead franchise, while Sonic is very much alive, and IDW currently have the licence to make Sonic comics.

(Further complicating things. Archie Comics published their own Sonic comics in the 90s for the US market, and their version lasted well into the 2010s, long long after the UK Sonic was history.)

It reprints "The Long Way Home" by Jesús Blasco and "Children of the Stars" by John M. Burns.  92 pages.

Further, stolen from Hibernia's Facebook page (and slightly edited by me):

Lost Treasures collects two complete stories from "Treasure" by masters of comic art, John M Burns and Jesús Blasco.

The first story 'Children of the Stars' tells the tale of the adventures of the Zexton family, as they set out for a new life on the planet Alpha Nine. The story is wonderfully drawn in its entirety by the late John M Burns, as Colin Brown of the John M Burns Facebook art group says "Children of the Stars is one of the best examples, (of his B&W work), being an artistic bridge between his first SF strip Space Family Robinson in 1966 and one of his most fondly remembered, Countdown in 1971."

The second strip featured is 'The Long Way Home', drawn in its entirety by Spanish comic master Jesús Blasco. It is one of his finest works. It charts the long odyssey of two children searching to find their parents across the crumbling Roman empire in fourth century Britain. Blasco's art on this story is simply amazing, some of the finest B&W artwork to be published in British comics. David Roach, in his preface says of the art, "Each page, each panel, is a masterclass in black and white composition, something that was always there is his work of course, but reached its peak here. But of course, I don't have to wax lyrical about how wonderful the strip is because, at last, you can read the whole thing here, collected at last. You're in for a treat."

This is a little different to our usual collections, but fitting well within our goal of shining a light on lesser known or forgotten masterpieces in British comics.  It has been an ambition of mine to reprint these two stories since stumbling across them in old copies of Treasure.

Lost Treasures is 92 pages, perfect bound, B&W, with an intro by me, David McDonald, and including a preface to The Long Way Home by comic artist and historian David Roach, detailing Blasco's work in British comics in the sixties and seventies.

This book is limited to 200 copies. Get the best-looking comic collection of 2024 while you can!

Maybe Hibernia could do editions of the remaining stories from Wildcat. I thought Rebellion would do volumes for Kitten Magee, Joe Alien, and the Wildcat Complete after they'd done Turbo Jones and Loner, but it's been a while now so I'm assuming it's not cost effective for them.

It'd be nice to see some of that fabulous Jose Ortiz & Ron Smith art collected properly.

Action Force - I imagine the art is great. Can anyone vouch for the stories themselves? I have a soft spot for the toys/designs, not sure I read more than a couple of episodes of the strip though.
Title: Re: Forthcoming Thrills - 2024

The Action Force stories are a mixed bag - they're based off a toyline, so they can be a bit basic at times. They're very violent (if bloodlessly so) for a kids comic though - they never miss a chance for someone to die nastily, often accompanied by dialogue like 'Aiieee! The pirahnas - eating me alive!'. Definitely not as good / gritty as a lot of the classic Battle strips but if you like old comics (and are nostalgic) I'm sure you'll dig them.

The Red Shadow stuff, which I assume this all is, is a bit dafter than the Cobra stuff as it includes Space Force and aquatic monsters.

I'm confused by this.  Surely 95% of the market for Turbo Jones and Loner would be people who already know what Wildcat was?  And, given that Wildcat's stories were inter-linked at points, why package them stand-alone?

Wouldn't there be more sales potential in publishing all the Wildcat stories together, as a full set, split across a couple of volumes?

I had the same thought too, but since two already are out, and the remaining three are stalled (or abandoned), my assumption was that they'd decided not to bother with anything more.

Plus once the teams split up in issue 1, there's barely any crossover. Doesn't mean it's a bad idea though. I'd buy them.

If they can't put the work hours into faffing about with scans they can use my scans for nothing!

Kind of. It's taking separate 2000AD strips and mashing them together. The Red Seas and Stickleback, Zombo and Harlem Heroes etc.

I'm a bit dubious about this year's Sci-Fi Special, as I was never a great fan of these Elseworlds-type crossovers. I will buy it (to show solidarity and all that) but don't have very high expectations as, for me, these 'alternative' stories never seem to work.

Honestly, I am both excited by the Sci-Fi special mash-up idea, exactly the sort of thing Sci-Fi specials should be for,
and also tickled by those instant AI efforts, Funt! But I'm aware it's going to be a rather steep slope from me pointing and laughing at the AI crudeness today, to me licking the (rust-proof) boots of a robot master tomorrow.

I'm gently predicitng that AI art and writing will be fashionable for a couple of years, and then human creativity will come back to the fore, and then we'll settle down into a sort of hybrid thing where we all accept that a human prompting and tweaking an AI generator is still art.
