Title: Dredd 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray available to pre-order now!
Post by: dweezil2 on 09 April, 2017, 04:49:58 PM
This has been mentioned in a previous thread, but it seems deserving of its own.

For tech savvy squax the rather good film Dredd is making its UHD debut on 06/06/17!

Wow HD currently seems to have the cheapest price, £17.48 including postage!

http://www.wowhd.co.uk/dredd/031398263937

Note Ultra HD discs are apparently region free, while the standard Blu-ray disc will most probably be locked to U.S.A region A.

Nice! I haven't upgraded to a 4K telly yet, but am planning to towards the end of the year (once the Scorpio console is out it'll make a lot more sense for me). Now I know what the first 4K movie I purchase will be.

Bear in mind, I'm pretty sure that isn't a 3D release in 4K - not even sure 4K/3D standard was ever established.

Yeah, with the prospect of going 4K I now find myself faced with a choice when I buy a lot of blu-rays - do I get the one that comes with a 3D copy or the one that comes with a 4K copy?! Obviously 3D is better for the moment because I can actually get the benefit, but it'd be nice if when I get a 4K telly I've already got some stuff to watch on it.

I see Ex-Machina is coming out on the same day on 4k http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ex-Machina-4K-Blu-ray/176583/ (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ex-Machina-4K-Blu-ray/176583/)

It's gonna be a good day for 4K owners. I'm a bit concerned about the special effects. Anyone who has seen Fury Road on 4k will know that the digital fire effects on 4k can look pretty crap. But I will reserve judgement until I get my copy.

A bit miffed that you can't get 4k 3d, not that I'm a fan of 3d but Dredd really does watch best in 3d.

As Steve said, 4K 3D was never a standard and with major manufacturers like LG pulling out of 3D compatible tech market , it's doubtful how long it will last as an option.

All the FX were rendered as 2K for FURY ROAD so it's a 2K digital master upscaled to a 4k image rather than an original 4k master. It will more or less be the same for DREDD as the film wasn't mastered in 4k to begin with.

The benefit of these releases is that it's HDR which means it has better colour dynamics.

The reviews are coming in for the 4K UHD release of Dredd and by all accounts it's a stunner, with particular praise levelled at the newly mixed Dolby Atmos soundtrack!

Finally went 4k and the Amazon price for this was about £40. Just stumbled on this thread again and checked Wow HD, £13! Ace, looking forward to it arriving, I've read the Atmos soundtrack is one of the best.

Fired it on for 15mins just to check the disc worked (I'd heard 4k discs had no region locking but this was my first purchase of an import one). Looks good, not mindblowing (but I'm finding that's par for the course with 4k discs, they very rarely seem to offer a noticeably big leap over 1080p, unless there's something wrong with my eyes) but definitely bloody nice. The Atmos mix on first impression is one of the best I've ever heard. It sounds fantastic.

Looking forward to sitting down and watching the whole thing!

Just picked this up from Wowhd for just over £13.00 including postage, I got a 10% off code... I am upgrading from my normal xbox one to a xbox one x at Christmas, but someone who already has one says it doesn't play all 4k discs!! Anyone got a xbox one x and Dredd?.... Cheers

Damn, if I could retain the 3D and also get the Atmos, then I'd be well up for this.  But if there's no 3D then I'm not bothered - it's a major element of the film, and one of the best examples of live action 3D filmmaking out there.

Maybe I'll change my tune one day, but tbh the transition to HD was the last meaningful upgrade in resolution. I doubt I'd even notice the difference between HD and 4K on my 32" screen, and I don't want a bigger TV than that.

I have, and really - it's not a massive difference on my 50" LG

Worst bit was I had to upgrade my amp too as all my video is routed through that, so it got pricey.

Even the HDR stuff seems a bit, ah it's OK - but it's not an OLED TV just a plain LED one. I'd probably put it at a <10% improvement at the distance I watch it.

I only really upgraded it as my old Toshiba had developed a fault, and the 4K TV itself was fairly cheap.

Think you'd either have to be sitting pretty close or have a 60" up TV to notice it properly, and a lot of the '4K' content is upscaled anyway.

Well, I'll cut against the grain here and say that 4k is absolutely noticeable, especially when there is proper HDR calibration on top of it. When you watch a good video that's purposefully recorded in 4k HDR, the difference between it and 1080p is startling. I've a 40" 4k hdr10 TV, and some of the stuff on Youtube is absolutely beautiful to look at. Not all 4k HDR content is created equal, and therein lies the problem. Some films will look good, some not so good, and Dredd doesn't really benefit too much from the 4k upgrade simply because of the way the film is lit and the way it intentionally has that gritty look to it, which was noticeable even in the theater. If anything, the 4k looks like an upscaled version, not unlike older films like The Matrix and Saving Private Ryan. It'll take a while, but the benefits of 4k HDR will matter a couple of years down the line when the standards for it sorts itself out, because right now it's a bit of a minefield where distributors can slap a 4k HDR sticker on something when in reality it really isn't true 4k HDR.

Hey, I have an Xbox One X and had no problems with any 4K discs, they've all worked fine. I have a US copy of Dredd that plays fine too. 4K discs don't appear to have any region-locking like DVDs, but it does mean that if your 4K import movie comes with the bonus features on a bonus DVD then that might not play depending on your region.

Dredd wasn't mastered in 4k so it can only ever be an upscale.

Just thought I'd chip in here and say

(a) I have a three or four 4K discs from the US (Amazon.com) and they all play fine on my X Box One

(b) the visual benefits really do depend on the treatment of the source material; the detail is sometimes so good that it can throw up poor CGI and props. Done well, the difference is stark over HD. Rushed out, the quality destroys the illusion.

Common knowledge to many - but it's something I learned the hard way...

The thing to keep in mind in relation to 4K/UHD...is the size of your screen - and how far from the screen you are sitting/viewing.  There are sweet spots that will give you the best bang for your buck.  Sitting too far away from the screen - and you simply won't be able to 'see' the 4K resolution.

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/kevinmurnane/2017/10/26/upgrading-to-4k-hdr-tv-how-far-you-sit-from-the-screen-is-critical/amp/

Note - I only own two UHD titles at the moment - Blade Runner and it's sequel, 2049.  Both look great on my 47" Sony 4K panel - but unfortunately my lounge room dictates where I have to sit (just outside the sweet spot).

Interesting to learn above that UHD titles are multi-region!

I'll be honest, I haven't even upgraded to 4K yet, as my 3D blu-ray player and TV do me fine, but I'm a sucker for collecting Dredd on any format, so it requires a purchase!!!

One more for the collection?
