Classic! Never knew your standard Lawmaster was a bit of a comedian.  More of this kind of thing!

Very grim, but all too accurate.

Ah, fair enough. Thought it was a bit of an odd concept fit Garth Ennis to introduce out of nowhere.

That was my first thought too.  The only story where the Lawmaster gets sarky with Dredd.

Definitely McNeil.  For feck's sake, let someone he kills stay dead.  Hershey's death was pure Dredd perfection, then... Well, never mind.

Some kind of super-regen technology.  Dredd has to stay on the streets and it has to actually be Dredd.

Think I could just about live with that.  The tech does exist in MC1, as shown by Mike Carroll in Carousel.  Not ideal, but none of the solutions are.

Spurred on by Broodblik's vote re. Dredd writers, I've started thinking about Dredd's age and decided to make my own referendum.

Dredd is old.  He began to feel his age over 30 years ago. He can't last forever. It's a problem, and I'm not sure how to solve it.  What should happen?

1.  Permanent Kraken - He should die, and Rico should take his name.

2.  The standard solution  - He should die, and (yawn) have his brain / bio-chip inserted into Rico to make them the same person.

3.  Dark Knight Returns (kind of) - He should become Chief Judge, and leave the rough stuff to Rico.

4.  The Taggart solution - He should die, and an ensemble of supporting characters should take over.

5.  The DC solution - the real-time thing should be quietly shelved, and a floating timeline introduced.

6.  The Stront - he dies, then we just dip into past cases here and there.  (But he isn't resurrected).

7.  The half-Stont - he doesn't die, but we still just go back to past cases (like that recent Apocalypse War one).

8.  The Dan Dare - the whole strip is dropped, and other writers occasionally resurrect him (though Grant Morrison isn't allowed to have Judge Death do what the Mekon did to Dan in Revolver).

9.  The Narcos solution - Dredd's brain is put into a Mechanismo robot, and now HE knows what it is to be discriminated against.

10 - something else.

It's boring, and cliched, but I think with a gun to my head I'd have to go with 2.

EDIT - no, feck it.  I'll go with 3.  Obviously that's just kicking the can down the road but it's the best I can think of.

hmmm ... i'd really like a showrunner to knit everything together and provide us with a little more consequence.

Me this also! I enjoyed the core Wagner years where events had consequences. It's a fun world to play around in, and I'm not saying that's necessarily wrong - but fitting each creator's vision in and trying to call it canon makes no sense. Or, to put it another way: End of Days is fine as alternity. It doesn't make much sense otherwise.

With you all the way here.

I'm struggling with Dredd's age too - Minus the 122 years that separate us, and adding the 5 accelerated years, he's about Joe Biden's age.  It wouldn't stretch credibility quite so much if his back pains and other ageing issues hadn't begun over 30 years ago.

I was a bit late to the party with this podcast, but Grud help me, I love it.   Generally I agree with most of what Conrad says and disagree with most of what Fox says, but that's what keeps things interested, I suppose.  Also find myself practically screaming into my headphones about some of the references you guys have missed but that's part of the fun too!

I'm no expert at reading music but that tune seems fairly straightforward.

Can't really think of anyone I'd like to see with a spin-off series; that is, anyone who hasn't had one already.  Thrax is a great character, but, I think, enhanced by the fact that so little is revealed about him.

Watchmen was an odd one - it showed that you can be fairly faithful to the original comics and still be kind of shite.  I liked V for Vendetta, though, even though it removed the essential message of the comic.

Personally I have a lot of respect for the Beardy Fella for his stance on the films - he could be absolutely coining it in, but genuinely put his integrity first.

Film & TV / The Boys Season 3
« on: 25 June, 2022, 10:16:13 AM »
Well, so far I've had a blast watching it this season.  I've got over the fact that Hughie isn't Scottish, that MM isn't still suckling from his mother, that the Female and Frenchie have names, that the Black Noir twist can't happen, and that Butcher doesn't have the same reason for hating the Homelander.  Butcher's accent seems to be getting a bit better too, or maybe I'm just getting used to it.

This season seems to have upped the Ennis-ness considerably, and no longer seems a toned-down version of the comic.  I was a tiny bit disappointed to see Herogasm reduced in scale - a house, not an island - but the depths of depravity are pretty much unchanged. Not many TV series show people fucking octopuses.  Also, Love Sausage has arrived!

The writers have very skilfully weaved the comic storyline around current events too; the whole thing is oozing with toxic Trumpiness even though the orange clown doesn't exist in this universe.

Looking forward to more.

Nationalist-Christians are taking over America.

It's easier if you shorten it to Nat-Cs

Nicely done.   The majority of the American people support abortion rights.  But never mind that - the Land of the Free doesn't work that way any more.  As the Exploited once said, fuck the USA.

I fecking love it.  Being a man of little culture, I don't recognise most of them, but will be googling for the next hour.   I'm inevitably reminded of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - I seem to remember a world Atlas of this type in one of the books, but my mind could be playing tricks on me.

EDIT - On the downside, I've just googled 'Horny Boy location' and it's now in my search history.  And I still don't know what work of fiction it comes from.

After being denied its intended site - by the fecking parish priest from his pulpit among others - a very nice sculpture (with a touch of Hicklenton and O'Neill) finds a home.  That first lot didn't deserve it.  https://www.thejournal.ie/puca-the-burren-5797347-Jun2022/
