Green Lantern advice..

Since getting In Brightest Day - tales of the Green Lantern Corps recently, I've been really getting into GL and trying to buy a few books that cover most of the major events. My first question I guess, is which book(s) cover the Parallax story? I got Emerald Twilight which leads up to it but I'm unsure which is the next volume. I bought Emerald Dawn assuming it preceded it, and whilst good (the extended Hal Jordan 'origin' story), it wasn't what I thought - so which book covers the destruction of Coast City? I can find a hundred and one listings for all the books to buy, but can't be arsed wading through that bloated DC site to identify them all to the continuity.

I have also just bought Revenge of the Green Lanterns, and I've pre-ordered The Sinetsro Corps War TPB - any other must-haves out there you guys recommend? Are the ones from around when he became the Spectre any good? Any weird one-offs, such as 'elseworlds' type stuff?

New Dawn collected the issues that followed on from Emerald Twilight and after that the collections are sparsely dotted around the next hundred or so issues. Baptism of fire collects his early adventures alongside other lanterns.

Emerald Allies sees Kyle join up with Green Arrow Junior. Emerald Knights is a time travel story featuring a young Hal Jordan.

Kyle also appears in Traitor and Fear Itself, both multi Lantern story set in discrete time periods. Each has three Lanterns dealing with the same recurring problem, both fun but not essential. Final Night carries on Hal's story and shows the first steps towards redemption. Circle of Fire is a big event series and pretty good fun too.

More effort was made to collect the issues written by Judd Winnick. You could look for books like New Journey/Old Path, Brothers Keeper, Passing the Torch, Power of Ion and possibly another that I forget. Despite the hype I prefer the Ron Marz version.

Speaking of which the Ion miniseries he wrote recently has been collected into two volumes. That pretty much links into the Sinestro Corps war, and plenty of other shared universe gubbins.

It's also worth remembering that Kyle was used to great effect in the Justice League between the Morrison Relaunch and the mega-epic Obsidian Age.

You'll want Green Lantern: Rebirth too as it was one of the big turning points and set the stage for The Sinestro War and now Blackest Night (looking at the prices on Amazon it might be time for DC to reprint that trade). You might then want to read Green Lantern Corps: Recharge.

The destruction of Coast City was collected in one of the Death of Superman trades - the one dealing with his return - and included the follow-up issue of Green Lantern, which in turn led into Emerald Twilight.

The specific volume is, surprise, surprise Return of Superman - which collects Green Lantern (vol. 3) #46. It'd probably be worth reading the three Death of Superman volumes as they are pretty much a trilogy and you'll get more out of the story, it also introduces/sets up a number of characters including Cyborg Superman who would go on to be a Green Lantern foe.

The rest of (vol. 3) is pretty poorly collected but they are doing all of (vol. 4) as they go along and (vol. 2) is being collected in a number of formats (although they haven't reached his exile in space period and some reviews suggest the early stories feel a little dated):

DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore is also a must buy and includes some great GLC short stories and "Tygers" - the prophecy given in the story is coming true in the current big stories:

Doesn't this cover the first days of Kyle Rayner as GL, rather than continuing the story of Hal Jordan's descent into Parallax? I think I've read this one from the library, but I've never found the Kyle version of GL very interesting. Guy Gardner was a much more interesting character as he was so obnoxious - what were his highlight stories?

Following Emperor's wiki-links,. I think its the Zero Hour book(s) rather than any Green Lantern volumes that I need for the Parallax saga, possibly followed by The Final Night.

I don't think I'll be buying all those Death of Superman books just to get the destruction of Coast City. I hated that whole cynical he's-dead-ooh-no-he-isn't reboot with black superman and robot superman and teenage superman all fighting it out pop-idol style to be the One True Supe.

This is a tricky one - the "New Dawn" listed on Amazon.co.uk is in fact the Emerald Twilight/New Dawn collection. That said New Dawn is a settling in period for Rayner, Parallax returns in the sixties but they aren't collected. Other than the events you mention (Zero Hour and Final Night) and Emerald Knights there is nothing much collected from this period. You can check out the issues here:

Can't blame you, it is one of DC's biggest sellers but it is stunts like that which put me (and a lot of people) of comic books for quite a while.

This is a better place to get stuck in. The Rebirth limited series brought back Hal Jordan and was the springboard to relaunch the GL series and Recharge did the same for GLC. Both set-up the current popular run in the GL-universe and you probably won't regret picking up any of the run (although check the reviews first), apart from the expense of course. The shortcut is Rebirth and Sinestro Corps War (which along with Blackest Night are considered a trilogy).

I enjoyed Legacy but i'd leave that till after Hals gone evil and died etc..... Zero Hour/final night

You can skip the SPectre/JLA stuff its not essential but it is there, also theres some more HAL in identity Crisis.
