... and here I am asking for help because I'm at work and an artist on a strip has asked about ref.
Can anyone conform for me that TEK judges have two std pads (no eagle) and that the badge says 'TEK'?
Please and Thankyou.
There's no standard uniform for any of the departments, other than street judges. Even the SJS are always fannying around with skulls and asymmetrical eagles. Here's Tek Judge Brufen getting his in Oz:
https://i.imgur.com/klZIgNp.png (https://i.imgur.com/klZIgNp.png)
On the other hand, when introduced, Brufen has a hexagonal badge that says Tek in a black circle, worn centrally. Both shoulder pads are non-eagle.
Cheers chaps- I'd thought it was like this.

Arguably there are two Brufens. Since he looked entirely different and died twice. And more pertinently, he's a Dept head rather than a rank-and-file Tek, so not the best guide. But then Stitch, of Mechanismo fame, rocked something similar.
I'd go with the full Carlos meself - rounded pads and soft helmet with goggles, as seen in The Starborn Thing. Dillon's Tek Judge Cassidy in Cry of teh Werewolf just had a green smock with his name on it. McCarthy's teks on Atlantis (and in Oz) had mad helmets with any number of lenses, aerials and servo arms
Or to put it another way, as long as its distinct from street uniforms, you just can't go wrong.

I'm surprised that Cassidy wasn't a med-judge rather than tek-judge - guess there's some overlap in some areas...

I exaggerate - he died during Oz, but was still alive and on the Council when Dredd resigns in Tale of the Dead Man. I'm only assuming he died in the Big Nec cos he doesn't appear again... It is also quite hard to reconcile the older spindly Robinson Brufen with the bulky McCarthy version, who looks more like one of his successors, McTighe.
A quick googolplex threw up some interesting results:

Never seen that one before - commission, perhaps, or spot illo for Arkensword?
I wouldn't use Brufen as a reference because (1) he was a head of division and (2) heads of divisions haven't worn breastplates since Necropolis (1990).
Every artist has his own interpretation. As long as you can tell it's not a street judge it doesn't really matter.

Hey there, Squaxx!
Got a question for the wise hive.
Sugar is illegal in the big Meg, so what 'is' used? I'd hate to have to use 'Aspartame' when there must be a much more MC-1 term out there. But I can't remember it for the life of me.
Help?

Good question (and one I don't have an answer to). If you don't get an answer, I'd invent something - probably playing on the words 'synthi', 'sweet' and/or 'sugar'. Or 'psuedo' - would 'psuegar' be too difficult to decipher without explanation?
Synth-a-spartame - the artificial artificial sweetener...

Ersatzpartame?
Synthisweet? Zugar? Synthicane? Novasweet?
Sweetener?
I recall a Dredd story where an illegal sugar buy went sideways when the buyers tested the merchandise and found it had been "cut with Sweetex".
Er, don't think there are any actual named brands mentioned, but synthisweet and sweetex ring a bell.
I suggest Syntharin (synthetic saccharin).

Actually a thing. (https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/259247766)
Is sugar still illegal? I remember that tea has been decriminalised (from that delightful Vienna & Rcio story)
Was that real tea? Or synthetic?

It's the 1993 Megazine Readers' Survey (they were giving away pages of original artwork by the likes of Ian Gibson, Frank Quitely and Peter Doherty, so that one's actually quite difficult to find intact.)

I had it in my head that all of the chapter titles in Zenith were songs and I thought it would be cool to make a playlist of them.
But looking through my collected Phase I hardback, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Or was it the "Next Prog:..." which aren't printed in this version?

And you're right: it's from the Next Prog boxes.
It was the "Next Prog..." boxes. Which aren't included in this version. I remember noticing that some were songs at the time and then bugging my dad to find out of the others were. In the end we phoned up the library at Radio Forth (this was a thing you could do to try and answer music trivia questions in the days before the internet) to ask then about the last couple.

As some of you know, I live in a shed for reasons too convoluted to go into here. Anyway, during this recent spate of torrential rain, it's sprung a leak and damaged my Judge Dredd Mega Collection, which is a huge testicular twinge but not really a disaster.
What is worrying me now is the future of the Strontium Dog page that Carlos gave me as a thank you for pulling together the Supersquirrel Undefeated Get Well Comic which is, thank Grud, undamaged. My shed is no place for this priceless piece of original artwork. I feel I should donate it to a museum or something, somewhere it can be looked after properly. (I don't want to sell it because it was a gift and to do so feels all kinds of wrong.)
Anybody got any suggestions (apart from "I'll have it," that
is!)?
Help! I'm being assailed by midges ( or something that's got wings and is equally annoying ). They've just started to swarm about the flat in the last day or two. I thought that maybe it was down to something rotting in the flat - I've been struck down with a flu / chest infection for the last four weeks, so my normally, relatively okay standards of hygeine have admittedly slipped a little. So I've given the gaff a good clean-up but so far it's made no no difference. The little bastards are flying around and annoying me even as I'm typing this.
I'm beginning to feel like that kid in the Charlie Brown cartoon with a permanent swarm of flies around him.
Thankfully I'm escaping now for a few hours to a friends flat, so I'll have some respite at least.
Any useful suggestions most appreciated.
Cheers! -

Having lived in a few typical British rental properties in the past I certainly know the fear that damp, flooding or mould will get to some items I have. If I was you I'd keep it in as safe a place as I could but also put in place a will so that the page goes to a comic museum (the only one I know of is the Cartoon Museum (https://www.cartoonmuseum.org/)). Was there talk about a museum to Carlos in his hometown, or was I imagining that?
Fortunately, the page has gone to a person of impeccable character for safe keeping - and we've both written some very gloomy "if anything happens to me..." letters. Nothing else I own is really irreplaceable so I'm content for now.
I think I had the same dream about a Carlos museum - I hope it comes to pass.

How do you pronounce Sláine?
Dredd's uniform is black (they just sometimes use blue as artistic licence, like with Superman's hair). The follow-up questions are just because this is one of the perennial questions that always comes up from time to time. There's a whole thread somewhere about Dredd's uniform, but if you can't be arsed to search for it, the evidence is: (1) Ezquerra always did it entirely in black and never used blue, and (2) John Wagner wrote a line of dialogue in The Judge Child where Dredd is about to kill a suicidal psychopath, and the psycho says something like "Death in black! Excellent! Black is my favourite colour!"

Yes, plenty of options like that (though that one looks like from the rebooted films) but I was wondering if any of the cosplayers on board had recommendations. The 1987 Sci-Fi Special has a Strontium Dog story in it - it's a 15-pager with art by Ezquerra. It doesn't have a title but it features a megalomaniacal computer named McIntyre.
It's got to be a reprint because the Ezquerra art is definitely pre-'87, and the credit card says "blueprinters" and doesn't look like 2000 AD.
It's not from the weekly Starlord, because it's 15 pages straight (not episodic), which means it must come from either the Starlord Summer Special or one of the three Starlord annuals. Does anyone know which it was originally published in?

They must have taken out the logo from episodes two and three when they reprinted it in the Sci-Fi special. Barney lists it for the special as McIntyre and for the Starlord issues as Planet of the Dead.
There's a Strontium Dog tale in the 1980 Sci-Fi Special (#3), which is mostly text story but has some comic panels interspersed. It's six pages long and has no sub-title. I named it (or someone else did but I forgot my source) "Kurtiz on Krillion-6", and it's clearly inspired by Apocalypse Now.
Can anyone identify the writer or artist? I think it's early Ezquerra, because the final panel has that bumpy edge thing he did, around Alpha's helmet cam.
(Barney has nothing on it, and neither does Touched By The Hand of Tharg (http://www.2000ad.org/thrillpower/).)
1980 Sci-Fi Special (#3) has a story "The Steel Claw", with no subtitle and no credit card. Perhaps a reprint?
It's 8pp, and has a weird alien machine that looks like a giant hairy eyeball on four spindly metal legs landing in Orkney and taking out some hapless crofters. Nuking it does no good - so, in many respects this is heavily inspired by the US movie version of War of the Worlds (1953).
Anyone know who the creators are on this one?
From memory that is Steve Kyte, who also did the full Stront strip in the 1982 annual and one of those Durham REd apocryphal tales many years later in the Megazine

Not only have they taken out the logo, but they have bowdlerised the art somehow in taking out the original colour from the colour spread - at the time I assumed someone had traced the art, but thinking about it now, possibly they just used the black separation sheet thingammee - where's Jim Campbell when you need him!

Hi guys, my question is this: does anybody have any info about which issues the page count of 2000 AD changed?
The reason I ask is I came across, in my stash of old 2000 ADs, prog 889, a relaunch issue with a new logo, and it felt surprisingly weighty (for a prog) in my hands. So I counted the pages and lo and behold, it's a whopping 44 pages, and I believe this page count was kept up for a few months. When I started my rum and uncanny 2000 AD journey back in the halcyon days of '83 the count was, and is now, 32 pages. I think around prog 650 ish it went up to 36 pages and stayed at that count for a number of years. I know I could spend some time with Barney to work this all out, but does anyone already have a list of page count changes? Oh you absolute star, Mr Solo - that's exactly what I was after!
So, if I understand you correctly, it went back to 36 pages for prog 890, and the 44 page count was just a one-off?
Yeah, that's it exactly.
Prog 889 was a jump-on with HMV vouchers, a reservation insert, a new logo and was the biggest prog published at that time. 888 and 890 were both the (of the time) normal 36pp.

Beautiful work - I loves me a good nerdgraph.
The thing that struck me most was the surprisingly low page count in the early glory days - so much thrillpower in so few pages.
It's interesting that whilst most forms of entertainment have become more compressed and speedy over recent decades (watching old Dr Who can seem painfully slow now), comics have gone the other way and become more bloated and extended. The British comic tradition, exemplified by Mills and Wagner in those early days, was a masterclass of compressed storytelling and delivering stories that could be enjoyed as standalone episodes without needing endless backstory; whilst nowadays (particularly in mainstream American comics) splash panels, extended page count and more indulgent (is that the right word?) storytelling, all fuelled by the trade market, mean that skill has been lost to some extent.
Hi all, hoping someone out there might have an answer for this.
The attached image is a Bolland piece - but from where? I initially thought it was a Wonder Woman cover - but my web-fu let me down.

Well what an interesting puzzle. Looking at both Lenin and the Moscow buildings they are from Batman covers. Lenin from Batman 446 and the buildings seem to be from 445. Can't be 100% but they look pretty much a match. So this seems to be some sort of composit image... but from what. The search continues...
Got it - well that search passed the time as we watched The Revenge of the Sith... more of which later in a different thread.
Anyway tracked the image down to

Now you say it, its obvious. But was it Teri Hatcher to Pierce or the other way round, that I can't remember?
It's Hatcher to Pierce. "If you're asking me to choose between you and Elliot... I made my bed. You're not in it anymore" ( ish)
So, The Valiant. After being a bit over/underwhelmed by the first issue, I really enjoyed the wrap-up in the current Meg, and I'm going to pick up the Legacy issue shortly. I'm leaning toward the Dr Mesmer and Von Hoffman collections too - those two lads are hilarious.
However, I have the nagging feeling that there's been more of these versions of some of the other characters somewhere, but Barney isn't helping. Was there a Death-Man strip, or a 'modern' Dr Sin? I know about the John Smith Dr Sin from a lifetime ago, and the Thunderbolt origin in the Smash special, but what else is out there?
Death-Man was in the Free Comic Book Day issue in 2016.
Ah, the one I don't have (I think)! Cheers Greg, I'll go for a dig in the boxes of shame just in case..

or a 'modern' Dr Sin?
There's a Dr Sin story by Rob Williams & Luca Pizzari in the 2015 FCBD issue.
Summarizing what's already been said:
Tharg's Terror Tales: The Death of Death-Man, FCBD 2016 - this has the writer as "Barry Island", which I presume is a pseudonym of Al Ewing. Art by Henry Flint.
Doctor Sin, 2000 AD Annual 1979. Barney says maybe it was written by Pat Mills, art by Horacio Lalia.
Doctor Sin: The Strange Case Of The Wyndham Demon, 2000 AD Action Special 1992. John Smith & John Burns.
Doctor Sin: Don't Call It A Comeback, FCBD 2015. Rob Williams & Luca Pizzari.
Excellent, cheers Joe, and you're a star, Funt. That 1979 Dr Sin is available in full on Barney, and also this month's Meg floppy. It's ace.
Was Doctor Sin the character originally called Judge Dredd, before Mills leant that name to some other character?

Both Al and Rob Williams have denied this to my face!
There's also
Death Man:The Gathering in the 2017 Scream/Misty special. That's credited to Henry Flint and "The Feek" which I thought at the time was that guy Martin Feekins but from what I hear now it looks like it's a direct prologue to The Vigilant.

I don't have any insider information or anything - but try turning the name 'Feek' around and comparing against known 'Robo-'s...
QuoteWas Doctor Sin the character originally called Judge Dredd, before Mills leant that name to some other character?
No. "Judge Dread" was going to be about an undead English hanging judge. Never written, AFAIK.
Definteily written and for my money, Dr Sin is 100% Judge DreAd, (or would be if Pat Mills himself had confirmed it rather than sitting on the fence!)
Witness!
Judge Dread is a story confirmed to be drawn by Lalia. The first 4 pages of the Dr Sin strip are by Lalia, then another artist comes in to finish off the story abruptly and to art bodge certain features on the earlier pages, talking of which:
The original Judge Dread tale opened with a chap being shown his brother's body in a mortuary, only to question "Where is my brother's head??" Dr Sin opens similarly, but it is the brothers hand that is missing - note though, that the art is bodged and the later artist has drawn the head on the corpse - there is no sign of a missing hand as they are still covered by the shroud and the guy is looking at where teh head is/should be.
The original JD story sees the guy meet up with Judge Dread, and they go off and disrupt a satanic ritual at Stonehenge/a Stone Circle. This plays out exactly other than it not being Stonehenge - it's this point that Pat got hung up on when he was asked about the strip, as he is adamant that he scripted it to be Stonehenge (though whether that translated to a foreign artist? Maybe didnnt get the reference or did not ahve the reference so fudged it? Maybe art bodged to make it somewhere more generic)
The original JD story then has them visit a local lord and cliffhangers the end of part 1 when Judge Dread recognises the lord as a man who he had seen hang years previously. Here same story plays out, but rather than JD saying he recognises the guy as a dead man, he gets all shook up about seeing him, but then in the final panel says something bland like "I sense he is a bit of a rum one" - this makes no sense of the dramatic way it is drawn as it if it a massive cliffhangery revelation.
The rest of the story is then by a different artist, calls the characters by different names and gerally just wraps it all up very abruptly.
If this ISNT Judge Dread, then I await a better explanation for Lalia drawing just 4 pages of a story that follows the story beats of the original Judge Dread to the letter, and why the other artist had to draw a head on that corpse!
"That's not Stonehenge" doesnt really cut it for me as enough weight against the rest of the evidence

I mean the penultimate panel of page 4 has the guy say to JD "You look like you've seen a ghost" to which JD replies "perhaps I have, perhaps I have..."
a complete set up line for him then to say "For I saw that man hang not 10 years ago!" instead of "that man looks evil, dont trust him"
He is Mr Morden on page 4...
https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?Piece=1147930
On page 5, he then says the guy IS undead, so go figure! (He is also immediiately changed his name to Arnot La Gross!)
https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?Piece=1147928
Page 5 itself appears to have some major bodging going on to - the giant pic of Dr Sin vs the shrunken image of the guy meeting the Lord and some weird lines and a missing speech bubble inexpertly removed that suggest there may have been a logo and such excised?
More evidence - this from the Judge Dredd Mega History book:
The basic plot concerned an eerie guy - Britains last hanginng Judge - who, along witha young companion, comes across illegal black magic practices being carried out at a place like Stonehenge. The Judge recognises the man at the centre or the ritual as someone he had previously sentenced to death.
"As for the original hanging judge sttory, the only trace is a brief entry in the 2000AD Make-Up book Prog 1-44 which relates to a four page Mills script (for which he was paid £30) calle "Black Magic: Judge Dread Original Installment One", and was drawn by Argentine artist Horacio Lalia. A Pencilled entry reads Unsuitable - maybe except in Annual.
From Thrill Power Overload
(again Pat quoted)
It featured a vampiric hanging judge called Dread who leads occult investigations. The first story had something nasty going on a t Stonehenge. Judge Dread recognises the leader of teh Satanists. "The last time I saw him was at teh Old Bailey, when I sentenced him to hang by his neck until dead".
Gah - lost half of that quote
continuing:
That was the cliffhanger of the first episode. I suspect Lalia screwed up the art
As in screwed up by not drawing Stonehenge?

So Twitter has 'temporarily limited some of [my] account features', which is actually all of them, and is requesting I supply them with my phone number. It's doing this through my browser, not the App itself. Is this on the level, or a phishing scam?
It's of interest to me that this happened the same evening I've been actively arguing with - and reporting -fucking Irish racists.
Buy a burner sim (the cheapest Giffgaff is about six quid for a month) and use that number.
You reckon it's legit Twitter practice? If it is, I'm not sure I could be bothered. I hate to let racist shitheads go unchallenged, but it's not like I'm actually helping anyone.
Problem solved. Ah well, back to the fray.
I only lurk on twitter -- his lordship does the actual posting for FQP that isn't just cross posting from the blog, so I've no idea if this is legit or not.
Did you log-in to twitter on your desktop and see the message or was it in a mail? If it was you looged in then I'd expect it to be legit.
It was legit - it just seemed odd that I was accessing Twitter through the App on a tablet, but the message popped up in a Chrome window and asked for a phone number. I would have been more reassured if the message had been in-App and explained itself rather than demanding confirmation from another device entirely.
I'm interested in why I was suspended when I was, but not very. Despite feeling a strong desire to counter fuckwits that claim to speak for me, I think I'm going to have to trim my Twitter feed right down: ethno-nationalism, science-denialism and what I can only call eugenics (the weak must die to strengthen the volk) is just so unbelievably pervasive - and I mainly follow science, heritage, comics, cooks, TTRPG and comedians.
Abandoning the field to scum seems wrong, but they feed on responses, and I'm not doing any actual good and only making myself angrier and even more depressed.
I had a similar online experience recently so also retreated for my own mental health. Tugging on the sleeve of a bully and asking them to stop hitting that other person can make one a target.
If a owners of a bar let someone loudly profess the tenets of national socialism, then it's a nazi bar. Same goes for social media sites.

Jorg Albertz ?
The Ribenaberry? No, neither of those two.
I seem to remember an interview with John Wagner in which he was asked what he thought of the Stallone Dredd movie and responded with something along the lines of "well, we borrowed from Hollywood [perhaps referencing Dirty Harry and/or Death Race 2000] so we can hardly complain".
Does anyone recall this or where I would find the actual interview?
That sounds more like something he'd say about Robocop.

Makes sense. Whatever they might think of the 1995 film itself, I think John, Pat and Carlos would have been happy with the credit (and royalties) that they received from the producers...
One Wagner anecdote I recall from '95 was him and Carlos eagerly watching the credits roll on and on at the premiere, eventually finding their names in small type towards the bottom... and just looking at each other in disappointment. (caveat - anecdote possibly embellished for dramatic effect, but essentially accurate)
Dredd 2012 put their names front and centre
Now that you mention Robocop - maybe it was that I was recalling.

My favorite part of that news story was that someone had told them right up front that a spreadsheet was a shit way to solve the problem and that they should use a database. Not only did Seneschal Cummings and Supreme Leader Boris ignore that advice, but somehow whichever medieval-hatted programmer they set on the task used the older, shitter version of Excel file (which had them lose even more information than they needed to, even with their already cheapo non-solution).

A question about a different type of comic here - does anyone remember a strip from one of the 80s British kids' comics (not the Beano or the Dandy) about a kid whose mother refused to accept the fact that he wasn't a baby any more? In an unintentionally sinister portrayal of delusional psychosis, she would dress him up as a baby and wheel him round in a pram, even though he was probably about 10.
It just sprang to mind as I thought of an old schoolmate who was known as 'Lambkins', after what that kid's mother called him. (The guy in my class had a sheeplike head of hair at the time - bald now but still goes by that name, or occasionally 'the Lamb of God'.)
Rings a distant bell - I'm remembering, I think, Krazy comic, which always had a cunning disguise on the back cover.
Don't know if that was it, though, I may just have the nostalgiavirus.
"Mummy's Boy" in Buster, although I believe it started in Monster Fun, (in which every other story related to some kind of actual 'monster'), so maybe the sinisterness was intentional.

I count 609 entries in my spreadsheet for letterers that are currently set to "? - Barney", which means that I looked in Barney but there was no info.
There are more than that missing from Barney because I've been in the process of populating the missing data items by checking the publications themselves.
I haven't published my data anywhere (because it's incomplete), but in theory it could be used to more fully populate Barney if someone wanted to tackle that project.

I'm thinking (too late in the day) of arranging some alcoholic treats that could be shared online instead, a crate of mixed craft beers perhaps, does anyone know of a reliable way to pull this off In The Current Climate?
Leaving aside your casual cultural stereotyping, I'd recommend Beerhawk.
Nothing casual about it, I assure you, it's the product of long-term study and analysis.
Thanks Dr X, I have Beerhawk (and Honestbrew?) on my radar - seem like a good option, if they are reasonably reliable wet deliveries. Is there a local outfit that anyone can recommend (that does more than just Heavy and/or Bucky, I mean)?
I believe Tesco delivers booze - and all kinds of party stuff.
Cheers Sharky, that would indeed have been the sensible solution, but I'm notoriously shitty friend and I've left it too late to get Tesco set up in time.
Instead I have arranged for express delivery of a spread of pretentious booze, and the same for myself, so that we can hopefully do a shared tasting if the digital stars align. Such times we live in.
What's the modern equivalent of a city pub crawl? An internet hub crawl? A sys-up? Hashtag party? A straightforward WINE session? Toast routing? Beer to peer torrenting?
Whatever - hope it's a good 'un!

Honestly, no. I use Beerhawk myself and heartily recommned them.
I'm trying to index Raptaur appearances, and I've got the obvious ones, I think:
From Judge Dredd:
Raptaur
Raptaur Returns
From The Simping Detective:
Crystal Blue
Innocence: A Broad
Playing Futsie
Petty Crimes
No Body, No How
Jokers to the Right
And in Trifecta.
Question: does the raptaur show up as a guest star in any DeMarco stories? [Or anywhere else I've not thought of?]
Trying to figure out the artist on this Durham Red poster from the back of the 1989 Sci-Fi Special:

Yes. That's definitely Will, and how he signs his art.
It is Will Simpson, and those symbols are a sentence written in Thai scrip (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_script) because (as we got told in a Nerve Centre some time later) Will's significant other is/was from Thailand (no idea if this is still the case, and it's none of my business).
Thanks!
Now that you've all told me who it is, it seems obvious. :D
I'm hankering to re-read the Sky Chariots from the early days of Slaine, drawn by Mike McMahon.
Which of the Hachette partwork books is it in?
Or is it available in another form? Book from this website's shop? In print, though, as I really don't like reading digital comics.

Zenith playlist
I had it in my head that all of the chapter titles in Zenith were songs and I thought it would be cool to make a playlist of them.
But looking through my collected Phase I hardback, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Or was it the "Next Prog:..." which aren't printed in this version?
It was the next prog tags, and I think somebody already made a playlist.
Yep - here goes - Zenith Phase One (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0eotKRZcNPnuzQfUsJEzZk).
I have tried Googling this honest...
I've become interested recently in trying to chart the development of the Judge Dredd origin story - i.e. all the shenanigans with Judge Fargo, President Booth etc. Of course, the last word on all this is the Origins story starting in prog 1505, but I'm pretty sure the gist of the story was already known at this point? So my question is which progs were Fargo, Booth et al first mentioned and what other stories were there that talked about the origins of MC-1, the Judge System, the nuclear war that caused the Cursed Earth etc. Thanks for any help!

Pretty much half of the established canon was put in place in the first epic-length mega-epic* The Cursed Earth. A bit more was added during Oz, but the rest was in Origins. Other than small bits and pieces (like the 'Judgement' trilogy of one-offs) that's the bulk of it.
* technically Robot Wars was the first epic, but that was when epics were less than ten episodes
That's great, Sheridan, exactly what I was after - many thanks!
There's this oddity from prog 169, which seems to be a shooting war between MC-1 and TC, that we've never* seen depicted elswhere:

I *know* my Fargo listing (https://2kstages.github.io/AtoZ/Judge/Fargo.html#baseMenu) is incomplete.
Booth is probably first featured in The Sleeper Awakes (from The Cursed Earth) - prog 68. And again in Fog on the Eerie (part of The Hunting Party arc) - progs 1037-1040.
Then there's Sons of Booth (2030-2032) & The Booth Conspiracy (2095-2099) - I feel sure there were more than two parts to that, though.

Icon (2050-2052)
Flaws (2076-2078)
The Booth Conspiracy (2095-2099)
Fargo is first mentioned in the Judge Cal story when we see his tomb which describes him as the first chief judge of MC1. There's more about him in Oz, which also introduces Judd.
Between that and The Cursed Earth, there isn't much else to go on, and most of what we saw in Origins was original.
Thanks Funt and Richard - both answers very helpful 👍🏻
Can anyone think of any good, online, examples of pencils to inks?
In Fog on the Eerie (progs 1037-1040, part of The Hunting Party set of linked tales) - what city is it that's getting nuked?
Erie, Pennsylvania.

Re-reading the last few posts from this thread - as has been said, Fargo 'the father of justice' was first mentioned in Day the Law Died (Judge Cal) but it was only revealed that Dredd was a clone of Fargo in the Question of Judgement story (or possibly Dredd Angel, if that came before).

What about the other cloned Judges, can't remember seeing badges on the street with their names either ( except maybe Goodman)

The clones wouldn't necessarily have the same names as the people they're cloned from. See for instance Judge Rico.

I just bought a new ipad but I can't transfer any files from my laptop - got comics and movies that I want to be able to access on the ipad. When I connect them (USB to charging port) I just get "cannot copy files. The device has stopped responding"
Any ideas?
(took me 2 days to find the partciular setting buried away that let me access my emails on it!)
DDD, are you copying one file or lots at once? If the latter, try a single file and see if you get the same error.
Tried to copy a whole folder full, then tried individual files - but when I first plug in the cable, the little charging symbol on the ipad lights up but then immediately goes out, sugggesting it's not accepting the connection at all.
That sounds like a fault with either the cable or the port. Are you able to switch either / both?
Quote from: Barrington Boots on 11 July, 2023, 01:03:17 PMThat sounds like a fault with either the cable or the port. Are you able to switch either / both?
Also, some USB cables are rated for charging-only, and won't carry data. Definitely try it with a different cable. Also, is the laptop port regularly used and functional? If it's seldom-used then there might just be dust/fluff in there which is interfering with the connection...
Can you send them via a wireless or Bluetooth connection?
If the power symbol is disappearing after it appears you definitely have a faulty cable. This is the singularly most annoying thing about Apple when it comes to their phones and tablets, the cables are chuffing useless. They are forever crapping out. I would say that even if you can get a wireless connection get a replacement cable as soon as you can.
As for Bluetooth, that is another area Apple does really badly (and I'm talking as someone who has used Apple for over 2 decades now). Unless it is a really small file I wouldn't bother, you will be there until hell freezes over.
tried several cables, including an official Apple one, no go. The USB port is regularly used. I've been suggested to download iTunes on the laptop but I dunno...
Could it be something as simple as changing one of the million and one settings? (when I tried to access my emails it just kept asking for my password but then did nothing, no explanation or error message - after two days fiddling, I found the appropriate setting was set to OFF)
tried bluetooth "the operation was not performed because the device has not been authenticated" - WTF does that mean?
Sounds like it's almost time to put some cheese in it.
the annoying thing is, I've got icloud drive on the laptop and it gets the photos off my phone no problem - I don't think there's a fault, I just can't work out how to do it.
It's tough, but ask a schoolchild (they'll do anything for a vape).

success .. of a sort. Moved the file (an episode of Babylon 5) to idrive, found it on the ipad - took ages to download though with my shitty broadband speed. I'll have to take my laptop somewhere with better wifi and copy the rest.

Pairing has not been completed properly. It needs the pins to match between the laptop and the iPad. Try re-pairing the laptop and the iPad.
iTunes on the laptop is certainly an option, especially if it an older iPad.

Should be scheduled for next year to allow for costuming.
Must be multi Media.
Cannot be Redemption because he had an argument with the committee and although all those committee members no longer are involved he won't have anything to do with them. (Don't ask... just... don't!)
Cannot be too far from where he lives (On the coast of Essex)
Hotel must have disabled access.

Downthetubes has a rolling list of British and Irish comic conventions that your friend might want to consult.
The obvious one would be MCM in May as it covers everything from comics, cosplay, books, table top games etc. Hotels are very expensive around the excel but if you go out a bit further i.e. Stratford you can get straight on the tube/DLR to the venue. Only downfall is that it normally falls on the same weekend as Lawless
Thanks I'll let him know....
I won't go into details but... well I recently found out that my mother was incorrectly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when actually she was type 1. This has been the main cause of her legs never healing from ulcerations. Now she has been properly treated they have almost returned to normal for the first time in 10 years. I want (If I can get mother to give permission) that I should seek to take legal action against our GP practice who's laziness and incompetence is the main cause. Has anyone ever had to sue the NHS? How dose one go about doing so? Is it worth it? I'm not after money I want my GP surgery investigated. My mother could have lost her sight or her limbs. It's disgusting and I don't think they should get away with this.

Excel is on the Lizzy line (though it's the south branch, so from the Essex branch they'd have to go down to Whitechapel, then head back to Custom House from there). There's no direct DLR from Stratford, but they could change at Canning Town.

When you say "they", you mean the GP? That's reasonable. Surely the answer is to report the GP to the British Medical Council, who will take appropriate action against the individual concerned.
You say you don't want money ... so why are you suing "the NHS"? That action will will eat up public money that could be better spent on others who need it, and probably have little or no impact whatsoever on the individual who made the misdiagnosis.
Please don't let your anger cloud your judgement. Target the cause not the symptom.
Sorry... Sueing is probably the wrong word. Lots of people have said I should persue a no win no fee option because they are as much in the dark as I am about how to proceed. I have voiced my concerns to people in our council and their reaction is to tut, agree and offer no help at all. I also have the issue that as my mother is fully in charge of her faculties it would be HER who will have to start any complaint. And I know my mother She is somewhat... paranoid. Not mental health need action paranoid but certainly of the "Don't complain or they will put you on a list and you'll get worse treatment!" Paranoid. I was just asking to see if anyone has complained about their Doctors surgery and if they thought it was worth it.
Well now it would seem that everything is suspended. I got a call from the hospital about a couple of hours ago. Mother is not responding to oxygen treatment because her lungs are failing. This is because she has lung cancer that had spread so treatment would only be palliative. We were told she would have had more time than this. I will keep you folks informed.
Sorry to hear that, Doc. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Thank you so much Shark (If a may be so informal) I estimate from what happened to Henry when his mother died that I probably have a month to clear everything after she dies. Perhaps a little more as it's Christmas.
Aye, thoughts and prayers with you all at this time. If there is anything we can do then please just shout. (or make Tardis noises ...)
font=Times New Roman]OK "makes TARDIS noise"
Mother died early hours of yesterday morning. Not that the Hospital has told me. I heard 2nd hand from my cousin. (And isn't that wrong?)
Mother told me that all the required paperwork to deal with her death would be found in her chair pocket. There is nothing. She said that she wanted no service. We really really can't afford it. Said she wanted the Pure Cremations option. Mother was an organized woman. I thought she would have taken out a policy with them. I can find nothing. That means I have got to find the money for the service. That is if they will accept a payment up front.
Mother owes money. We were confidently told that Mother would probably live for another 2 years. The Doctor I spoke to (And should of recorded) Clearly indicated that her death was caused indirectly from her prolonged hospital stay... which means I will now have to pay back the carers allowance I was finally granted.
I estimate the dept is around £2500. I can't find evidence of any life insurance policy.
I paid this moths rent so I have a roof over my head until the second week of January. After that I will probably be homeless So dose anyone have a large shed me and Dorian can live in? We were made homeless once and the place we were housed in was so awful at least 2 people have committed suicide.
I can cook, clean and do light gardening. All my qualifications
I have no ID. I was going to apply for a Passport next year as I now have the money to do so. And I had the time to do so. Or so I thought. So no money... even if I qualified for any form of benefits.
So I am f**ked.
Oh and Adrian is currently in hospital. He has had blackouts and has been severely trembling. He is not a drinker and the probable cause even though there is no family history is that he has contracted Parkinson's.
Merry bloody Christmas to us.
My heart goes out to you, Doc. I ran out of parents myself not too many years back.
My condolences, Doc.
I hope things level out for you soon.
xx
Thanks for your kind words. But I really am worried about my cat. Dorian is 6 years old. I can't give him up. I just can't.
[Adrian has officially been diagnosed with Parkinson's... even though there is no family history (as far as he knows.) He has started treatment and it seems to be working. However now the Doctors have to figure out his blackouts... In a way they are more worrying. He seems to operate on auto pilot which so far hasn't lead him into trouble but how long can that last.
Adrian was allowed to go home yesterday. He didn't arrive back until half past Ten. Adrian's tremors have improved. No further blackouts yet. No Idea why he has them unless it's an exceptionally rare symptom of Parkinson's. He has been given a working key safe and one of those emergency button alarms.
As for me unless I can get some help I will be homeless come the middle of next month. I will be collecting Mothers Death certificate on the 28th. Then there will be closing accounts and finding out just how much dept I have to pay.
So a friend upset me yesterday. Told me that I would be better off taking what goods I could and just... walking away from the flat and not even going ahead with the plans to cremate my mother.
His reasoning is that I need every penny I process and shouldn't waste what I will receive from my mothers life insurance policy on disposing of her remains.
That will not be happening even if I have to crowd fund to do the right thing ... That's what I will do.
Need a bank account first though. I have been told by the passport office that my application is going ahead normally so... there is that.
Still worried that I will have nothing for next months rent and I could use the time. I am 100% certain that I will be homeless come the 12th of next month and without funds of any kind.
And poor Adrian has become allergic to nuts... especially peanuts. He loved peanuts.
I could walk away and live with Henry but... well I wouldn't see my friends ever again and his dogs might tear Dorian to pieces.
Please do not make any hasty decisions Doc. I would completely agree with you regarding the advice you have received. However well intentioned it might have been, it misses so much about how much your mother meant to you. Let us know when the crowdfunded is set up.
Have you spoken to Citizen's Advice and Shelter? It sounds a little like your caring responsibilities have limited your employment options in recent years, would that be fair to say? Also, has your mother left a will of any kind? Is there an official executor of her estate? Have you spoken with the landlord? These would all be relevant to how best to proceed.
Make sure you are taking care of yourself too. We're here for you if you need anything, even if it is to sound off about things.
Well tomorrow I will be contacting the MacMillan tomorrow. I can't be the only person they have had to deal with in my situation. I hope they can help.
I am sorting out things into three piles and am planning to go again to a local charity shop to dispose of things which I know are of use... but I doubt will sell. A slow and awkward process as I have no transport and have to load up a trolley and travel by bus.
Things that are mine and need to keep.
Things that are fit for resale. I need every penny.
Thinks to be disposed of. Either going to charity shops or into the rubbish bin.
There is one thing I would ask someone urgently to do for me.
I donated £2.500 per month to this charity.
https://www.mrlumpyandfriends.com/donate
I can't do that anymore. Can some kind soul subscribe?
I will sort that for you Doc.
This forum is sublime.
Thank you so much Barrington Boots.
Just found a phone message from the registry office, they now cannot process my mothers death certificate because they now don't have her medical certificate. When they called my first they said they had everything needed and all I had to do is turn up.
I had one appointment and they were apparently ready then to process the certificate the so WTF?
Will have to wait for their call tomorrow to see what happens next.
AND I got a letter from the housing benefit office saying "we don't accept applications for an increase in your benefit until October 2024"
The Landlord should know this because this is what happened last time.
Well finally got mother's death certificate. Monday is going to be hectic with phone calls as I try to explain to 4 catalogue companies and a credit card company that not only is my mother dead but the "estate" is totally in flux and no, there will be no more money to clear her accounts.
Not sure if you're aware of this but you are not liable for anything unless you signed a joint agreement with your Mother.

Thank you NapalmKev for this information.
Things may be worse than I thought. I contacted what I assumed was a company that had a life insurance policy and they can't find it. Now I was told it might be lost in the system and that I need to send a copy of the bank statement with the direct debit showing but if they can't find it well... There is nothing to bury my mother with. I am still awaiting my passport without which I cannot open a bank account... Ahgh!

And now I have a letter from HM Revenue & Customs asking me to prove that mother had paid the right amount of tax. How the F**k do I prove that?
It might be an idea to gather any relevant documents, such as tax returns, payment receipts, or correspondence with HM Revenue & Customs. Make sure to reach out to the bloodsuckers, explain the situation, and ask for guidance on what specific information they require to resolve this matter. They should be able to provide you with a clear outline of the required documentation and the appropriate channels through which to submit them. Also, what does another person's private financial doings have to do with you?
Or, you can tell them you've asked Derek Acorah and he says everything's fine and that HMR&C actually owe your mother £17,364.58p - but, as this has nothing to do with you, you'll magnanimously allow them to keep it.

Get a solicitor. Seriously. I was the executor of my mother's will, and I tried to sort out her estate myself for about three months before giving up and getting a solicitor to do it. Even if there isn't a will, if there's any money in the estate at all, it will be worth it.
Whatever assets/money are in the estate will be used to settle any outstanding debts. You shouldn't be liable for any debts that the estate can't cover. If there's enough money, the estate also bears the cost of the funeral. A solicitor will also handle any HMRC queries, calculate any inheritance tax liabilities (which the estate also pays if there are any... but almost no normal person's estate gets hit for inheritance tax).
You can also stipulate that any money in the estate can also be put towards the solicitor's costs. It'll all eat away at whatever there is, but the alternative is blundering through a legally complex and specialist process with some potentially very expensive pitfalls... as I fairly quickly realised.
All I did was bundle up as much of my mother's paperwork as I could find, arranged it all into chronological order by year, and handed it over. They did the rest.
Mother HAD no assets How do you prove a negative? And they know she is dead. That's why they contacted me. >:(

Then I'd get on to Citizen's Advice to see if you can get some free legal advice. As I said, this stuff can be complex and specialist — trying to navigate it without proper advice is monstrously stressful and borderline incomprehensible, as I discovered.
So my passport arrived today. Any recommendations for a bank? I need a bank account.
If you want big reliable High St bank with slightly more ethics than the rest of the bastards, try Cooperative.

Someone once pointed out that UK bank logos used to forewarn you just how nasty they could be:
- Barclays: vulture
- NatWest: quasi-swastika
- Midland Bank: a griffin with very scary talons
- Lloyds: Dick Turpin's horse
3 out of the 4 catalogues mother had has cancelled her account and have dropped the payment of the balance she owed. Except Very. They sent a solicitors letter wanting payment!
Can't get a bank account because I don't have any documents supporting the fact that I live at this address... Unless I get a polling card anytime soon... can't really wait until April.
Well now... Finally managed to be accepted for a bank account...
But only because I got a council tax letter in my name saying that I now owe £448.72
And another latter saying that as my mothers executor I owe £598.30 in council tax for her.
And another letter DWP demanding repayment of £407.00
And another letter from mothers private insurance demanding repayment of £1800
THERE IS NO MONEY.
mothers life insurance can't be found and even if it was it wouldn't cover all this.
The landlord wants me to leave ASAP as he claims he is selling up & retiring.
I don't even have the money to see to my mothers remains...
Happy birthday to me eh?
Jeez, Doc, that's rough. Sounds like you've got some challenges ahead but I reckon you'll rise to meet them.
Hey Doc - I know someone up-thread suggested a visit to the Citizen's Advice Bureau, and I just wanted to reinforce that suggestion. I was once struggling to figure some finances out and the CAB helped me untangle it all. It made a huge difference to my situation.
I'm going to an advice place Monday. But thanks for the help. (You can't see anyone from CAB for at least 6 months around here. Luckily Adrian knows people.
Unluckily Adrian doesn't actually have Parkinson's.. he has Parkinson's+ (yes that IS it's name ) Yes it is real. Yes he will be lucky to live longer that 10 more years. He is my best friend, I don't have many IRL friends. (No offence to you fine folks but I only know you from the forum) and I am going to lose him. Its not right. He doesn't deserve this.
