Mmm....pretty much anything by John Williams.  But for a soundtrack that is made up of existing music, then 'The Business' has a very apt and pretty awesome soundtrack.  Games wise, I always turn off the music.  Well, except in GTA series, where I usually have the rock channel on.....

Ennio Morricone - Once upon a Time in America always sends shivers down my spine.
For a collection of music I have always liked the Kill Bill soundtrack.

Another Williams fan here, as well as Jerry Goldsmith.

You can't beat a bit of Morricone, similarly Vangelis.

I'll listen to any of John Carpenters's scores.

Recent favourites include Daft Punk's Tron:Legacy and of course Paul Leonard-Morgan's fantastic Dredd score.

My favourite film soundtracks in no particular order;

Maurice Jarre - Lawrence of Arabia; moving, majestic, enthralling. Stirring stuff indeed.
Ennio Morricone - The Mission, Once Upon a time in the West; his music makes you feel like your soul is ascending to heaven!
Peter Gabriel - The Last Temptation of Christ; brilliant. A really middle eastern flavour, thanks also to a Morrocan group who contributed
Vangelis - Blade Runner; magnificent. Mesmerising. It transports you to Los Angeles circa 2019!
Jerry Goldsmith - Alien; a superb score which makes the experience so enriching
John Williams - The Empire Strikes Back; one of Williams best, the moment when Yoda lifts the X- Wing, the music still sends shivers down my spine!
Pietro Mascagni - Raging Bull; beautiful. Absolutely beautiful, and in stark contrast to the brutal character of La Motta. Scorsese sure knows his music.

Conan the Barbarian (1982) - Basil Poledouris.
The score, probably more than anything else, sets the tone of this film. Simply fantastic.

Cannibal Holocaust – Riz Ortolani
Cannibal Ferox – Budy-Maglione
The Wicker Man – Paul Giovanni / Magnet

Day of the Dead  / Creepshow – John Harrison
Cat's Eye – Alan Silvestri
Re-Animator – Richard Band
Robocop – Basil Poledouris
The Long Good Friday – Francis Monkman

The UNtouchables 1987 has some lovely tunes. Still like alot of gerry anderson stuff inspired stuff even the incidental music is just um Fab. Star  wars and a bit of music as harroison ford goes into a tunnel in the fugitive.

I never notice soundtracks unless they are overbearing and intrusive (eg Murray Gold's in dr Who) or have become classics like Star Wars or Superman.

I used to live with a bloke who collected soundtrack albums however - he had hundreds, even from films he'd never seen or didn't like. Always thought this was a weird obsession as he never seemed to play them.

Agreed!  I listen to the Ecstacy of Gold and The Trio from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly almost monthly!!

It goes without saying the Dredd soundtrack is awesome.

I still have my double gatefold LP of the Star Wars soundtrack, but I also have it on CD.  the kids love it when we're in the car and I tell the story over the music, complete with special effects.

As far as compilations go, I like Trainspotting.  It's a fairly eclectic mix of stuff.  Also, the soundtrack from Spaced is just bizarre.  Both well worth a listen.

Lalo Schifrin - Magnum Force for me, (along with the recent Dredd, Drokk and others already mentioned).

I'm quite partial to library records from labels such as KPM, Boosey And Hawkes and De Wolfe, and artists such as Basil Kirchin whose reissues are available on Trunk Record. Trunk is a great label collecting radio and tv ads and jungles, cult film and tv OST's, flexi disc compilations and the like.

Mr Tarantino certainly appears to know his music and seems to select slightly more obscure music tracks which actually 'enhance' his movies..

Can't say I listen to it outside the context of the films, but I think the Lord of the Rings soundtracks are an astonishingly good collection of rousing, evocative themes. Almost Star Wars-level good imo.

In particular the 'Gondor' theme - that sequence in Return of the King when they light the beacons still sends a shiver down my spine and brings a tear to the eye.

You damn right man.  Although I'd say reservoir dogs has the edge on pulp fiction, the whole k-billy 'pop bubble gum classic' of stuck in the middle with you during the torture is an inspired, and somewhat disturbing choice!  And Jackie Brown too.....some absolute belters in that one.

Oh and Ghost Dog has a fantastic soundtrack
Ghost Dog has a great score but imagine my disappointment on buying the soundtrack album to find it full of extended versions of assorted hip-hop tracks which barely featured in the film without any of The Rza's incidental music.

I suppose it depends if you're talking about something which goes well with the film or something which you can listen to in isolation. I generally find the latter a bit hard to understand. Think the last one I bought was Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' effort for The Proposition which seems to fit the general pattern of a bunch of repetitive variations on the same theme which worked perfectly in the film but don't stand up without the visuals. Similarly, I loved the soundtrack to Valhalla Rising when I saw the film but found it deathly dull when I listened to it on Spotify recently. Although, coincidentally, one recent one which does stand up for itself is Drive.

I've never listened to Morricone without a film so maybe he'd work. I know some of the stuff Popul Vuh did for various Herzog films is pretty decent, in that it doesn't sound much different from their other albums.

I haven't listened to Judgement Night for years but I remember it being pretty funny at the time. Rza went down a similar road with his Black Keys collaboration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ8Gtx45Fmc) from The Man with the Iron Fists, which was ace.

When it comes to soundtrack as a collection of random songs, however, I don't think you can get better than Until the End of the World. The film itself is a mess, but the soundtrack is full of cracking tunes, many of them written specifically for the film, from the time when Wim Wenders was mates with a bunch of musicians but he hadn't quite gotten mental enough to let them make the films.

My favourite Howard Shore moment is when the Fellowship are fleeing over the Bridge of Khazadum, that scene perfectly encapsulates the The Lord if the Rings for me. Howard shore did a perfect job on the Trilogy, perfect.

As well as the ones I mentioned earlier, I also have to say another favourite soundtrack belongs to the French masterpiece La Haine, I remember watching it over 10 years ago and it blew my socks off! The music during the (toy) helicopter assisted shot over the estate especially, is superb.

Nino Rota & Carmine Coppola's score on The Godfather films are also a personal favourite. As is Bernard Hermann's score for Taxi Driver.

QuoteMy favourite Howard Shore moment is when the Fellowship are fleeing over the Bridge of Khazadum, that scene perfectly encapsulates the The Lord if the Rings for me. Howard shore did a perfect job on the Trilogy, perfect.

Yep, so many wonderful, memorable themes. It's an example of the music actually helping to tell the story - each race or people have their theme, and the music tells you so much about them, even if you don't consciously notice it.

I also love the way the themes often appear very subdued or subtle at first, and then later are heard in full-on, majestic orchestral version. In the Extended version of Fellowship, Boromir gives a speech about Minas Tirith during the Council of Elrond, and we hear a quiet, subdued Gondor theme for the first time, than in Return we get the full-on version. So brilliant.

I also really like Pippin's haunting song in Return of the King - so brilliantly performed and contrasted with the brutal imagery, and also the Rohan theme - the full, triumphant version of which we hear during The Ride of the Rohirrim - up until then it has a real maudlin, sad quality to it.

By contrast, I was very disappointed with the score for The Hobbit part one. The 'Misty Mountains' theme was great, but seemed to be the only memorable new piece of music and was repeated ad nauseum throughout the film, along with lots of copy and pasting of music from LotR. It's also basically a reworking of the Fellowship theme - all part of the wider problem of that film being too referential to the previous trilogy imo.

I don't think there has been much if any in the way of TV Soundtracks so I am going to throw in a couple:

Star Trek TNG Theme
Star Trek DS9 Theme

Whenever I watch these programs I find myself humming along with the themes (when I don't skip past the opening credits).

Battlestar Galactica (recent version)

This has an amazingly evocative opening theme that truly adds to the atmosphere of the program in general.

JERRY MAGUIRE has an awesome soundtrack album - if only for the brilliant "Wise Up". (which I don't actually recall hearing in JERRY MAGUIRE but is front and centre of Paul Anderson's MAGNOLIA).

It's those sort of soundtracks I tend to buy rather than genre stuff.

But I do have Star Trek: First Contact in the house just because the First Contact theme is so beautiful and Star Trekky.

Oh and Last of the Mohicans.

You've lost that loving feeling that normally epitomises this forum.

Quote from: The Cosh on 14 November, 2013, 11:08:36 PMIs it Voyager or Deep Space Nine which has that dreadful earnest wet rock song? Reckon that's the onnly thing keeping Firefly off all time worst tune spot.
It's ENTERPRISE that has the song. It actually grew on me to the point that a quite like it now. Especially because of the inspirational images that accompany it.

The Enterprise song sucks big ones, but after watching the whole of Firefly over a single weekend, I had that fabulous song stuck in my head for weeks.

Amelie.

And also absolutely anything by Preisner. He scored most of Kieslowski's films - highlights for me being The Double Life of Veronique and the Three Colours trilogy. Preisner's soundtrack for Louis Malle's Damage is also masterful.

And Drokk, of course (natch).

Absolutely love that 'Duelling Banjos' excerpt from Deliverance....Thanks Mr MacRoth.....

Not only is it a fabulous piece of music,  it is a fabulous lead into what happens next,  when they set off in the canoes...An amazing movie with all round great performances, especially Ned Beatty as 'the little piggie'...
Cheers

Well the correct answer to best TV soundtrack is from the Batman: Animated Series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A71i0a5x-qA). The opening is brilliant but the music throughout the series is excellent too, from the Jokers theme  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUWcNZHtMDo) to all of the incidental music and the little sad moments from characters like Freeze. Of course it owes alot to Elfman's original score, which was probably the best thing to come out of the Burton movies.

I always liked the Buffy theme. Probably my favourite from live TV. Always liked the grungy pop-rock that featured in most episodes too, not my personal cup of tea most of the time but went well with the series.

Strong contenders that I feel may be neglected are The Men in Black animated series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXHeuRMc6ak) or Samurai Jack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e51hgWIsY4M), though the latter benefits from Aku's prologue as much as anything.

Other highlights include:

The Shield sets up the gritty nastyness that's about to hit your screen.

Angel had a good one too if a lot less fun and much more angsty than Buffy.

Firefly - well it's a little lame if I'm honest, but endearing nonetheless.

The Wire - probably the first season with Mr Tom Waits but each version gives something different to it.

Despite initially enjoying the first 3/4 of the 1st Series of True Blood..........before it became a 'parody' of itself......Throw any idea at a series and hope it sticks,  type thing..
Got to say that the theme tune Bad Things by Jace Everett is an amazing piece of music...
Cheers
