So we’re well into the second half of the 1st Round and stats fans this week sees us cover 14.2% - 16.3% of the tourney over all… oh gosh… I wish I hadn’t typed that… I’m sorry...

Tracer has the honour (?) of being amongst a select group of thrill that meets the minimum requirement of appearing in only 2 episodes so just qualifying as series. Mechastopheles was a 3riller notching up 3 episodes before bursting out into its own series - so just like the eponymous protagonists if scale has anything to do with it we know where this one is going.

When I say Night Zero I mean ALL the Zeros - so Night Zero, Beyond Zero and Below Zero - why, oh why didn’t it have a nice easy title like ‘The Adventures of Tanner’ or ‘The Pointy Finger Go Kapow’ or similar. At least From Grace was nice and self contained!

Well Armageddon falls into the great what if. There seemed to be grand plans for the series but it quickly fizzled out into nothing leaving the thrill a curious oddity. But Carlos art, so… Hunted also feels like it had more to say and do and might well come back? Though it's been a wee while.

Two video game thrills here. Urban Strike was bizarrely based on a computer game about a helicopter. Dandridge even more bizarrely had a story with a ghostly Pac Man thing...

HOLD ON, HOLD ON, you’ve had to put through Time Flies and the rebooted Harlem Heroes, amongst other horrible thrills BUT NOW one of these two has to miss out… Well at least the BBC cameras will be there to cover this, one of the red hot draws of the 1st Round.

Fascinating one this - just how do you judge those Tharg the Mighty stories then - this is the actually strips named Tharg the Mighty - such great artists have done them, the idea was such fun and felt ‘important' as a kid as it gave you a twisted peak behind the scenes…. But sometimes they’re so god awful to actually read! Mind Universal Solider (we’re not including Kelly’s Eye story that span off here, that stands on its own) was a little all over the place too! I guess it comes down to...

Week 6 and, brace yourself, we get over the half way marker in Round 1… yes when I said this was the biggest of these things yet I wasn’t messing about! We’re not even half way… in Round 1… and Round 2 is bigger than Round 1 before you get your hopes up… we’re in for the long haul here folks!

Storytelling needs to be reflected on here. For all this magnificent style and eye-popping glory John Hicklenton wasn’t the clearest of storytellers to say the least. Bob Byrne however doesn'tr use dialogue or words and is still able to tell his tales - is that enough though?

Walter the Wobot is much maligned these days. Look back at these daft strips though and you’ll find some stunning art. Mind speaking of stunning art Bendatti Vendetta is by John M Burns - so ya know!

Early comics work, from the small body of work that Paul Cornell produced for Tharg, vs relatively early work from the massive body of work produced by Dan Adnett. Some interesting art to reflect on as well.

Great example of why this tourney is so interesting. These thrills feel at opposite ends of the thrill spectrum to me, in terms of tone at least. One very dour and earnest, the other while dark madcap and chaotic. All that matters of course - aside from your pony - is...

Shall we have a sweepstake on how long it takes before someone makes a joke about Trash being the most aptly named series in the comics rich history?... does that count as making a joke about Trash being the most aptly named strip in the comic’s rich history??? Looooookk we discussed this a couple of times - I know Metalzoic is a fudge. I KNOW it shouldn’t be here based on my own rules of entry BUT just about everyone who discussed it agreed exceptions need to be made for this most 2000ad of none qualifying thrills… oh and Harry Kipling something something...
