Dear Fifty,

OK, no bad feeling, may be I was just in a bad mood after the match!

I think Arsenal made a good season, maybe Arsene Wenger will replace Roger Lemerre in future France matches.

Anyway, I don't normally follow football much except international. I prefer the comics!

To all the people who have teams still in the world cup, good luck! (Except Senegal and Denmark of course)

Gracious of you Chtistophe, at least you won the 6 nations this year.

Unfortunately the french people I meet always seem to be pleasant, friendly and charming, which makes being a francophobe difficult in practice :)

There is quite a tradition of knocking France in England, I'm not entirely sure if that really has anything to do with the actual French people, or France as a nation today.  More the murky and nebulous tentacles of history, which with Europe being the historically violent place it is, usually means that everyone has had a go at everyone else with stabbing distance at some point in the last thousand years.

I always assumed that there was a similar sentiment in France about England and well, between an awful lot of countries.  More based on imaginery rivalry than any real emnity. I mean, most of our ancestors were wretched peasants (well mine were) who did whatever the current ruling elite of the land demanded (not like today of course).

It's a bit like Scotland and Ireland.  Most Englanders usually want them to do well (unless they've ever been stuck in an Irish bar during the Olympics), but it doesn't seem to work the other way round :)  For example the sudden love of Argentina that briefly overtook Scotland.  Ah well, all those replica shirts bought and where did it get you?  Still, let's just hope it somehow helped Argentinas economy a little.

To me it's always hard to see where the amusing rivalry starts and the bitter seething hatred that history and Mel Gibson movies provoke.
